6 Ways to review a book and 4 ways not to #BookReview #Read

I'm not the only author who adores reviews.

Honestly, they can be worth more than a sale.

Think of it this way: I make about thirty-five cents on every dollar of a book. True story. Obviously, that amount isn't going to make or break me financially. But if someone leaves a great review on a book, it might entice more readers to pick it up. Which means over time, those little bits add up.

Readers count on reviews to tell them whether a book is worth buying. I know I do. What about you?

As an indie author, every review I get helps my visibility, which means I can spend more time writing and less time marketing. If you want me to put out more books and sequels faster, giving me reviews is one way to make that happen.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of reviewers who don't do reviews correctly, or truly don't know how to write one.

I've given you some basic dos and don'ts below. Glance through them to make sure you are including some of the dos, and are not guilty of the don'ts.

The Do List

Do leave a line or two (or more, if you wish) about your experience with the book.

Do talk about how it made you feel. The emotional experience is the most important one you have while reading a book, and the same is true of other readers who might be looking for that type of experience.

Do let people know why you liked or didn't like the book, and why you will or won't read subsequent books in the series or by the same author.

Do share how it starts and what drew you into the story.

Do talk about the positive aspects of the story, the world, and the characters you met inside the story.

Do be direct and to the point.

The Don't List

Don't leave novella-length reviews. It's okay to gush about how much you loved a book, or use whatever words are necessary to warn readers about books they shouldn't waste their money on, but again, direct and to-the-point is best.

Don't give a strong opinion without a reason. "I hate this book" or "I love this book" but without saying why doesn't help other readers form an opinion. For example, if a book was too spicy for your taste, say so, because readers who prefer spicy books will be more likely to buy it.

Don't share spoilers that reveal secrets, or talk about how the book ends. Not cool!

Don't give super-intricate plot details Readers want quick and to-the-point reviews.

Now what?

You don't have to do all the dos, but this is a good starting point. Leaving a review helps support both authors and fellow readers.

Thank you in advance for taking time to share your opinion.

What members are asked to do:

* Sign up on StoryOrigin (it's free). This is where you will pick up all books available for review.

* A review can be placed on any site.

* It doesn't have to be a five star review. I prefer honest responses.

* Once you've posted the review, enter the link on the book's StoryOrigin page (hint: save the email you get with the link to the book). That's it!

Once you create an account on StoryOrigin, you'll be able to choose from many other authors, but you are under no obligation to do so.

Please, if you hate a book -- email me instead of reviewing. I love talking to readers. And if you LOVE it -- definitely feel free to email me! I listen and want to know what you think. Your input makes a difference.

The banner above was one of the first homepage images on my site. I love it! It was created for me by Laura Givens. She was the cover artist for many of my books, pre-indie. In this image, she put all the guys in tuxedos and grouped them as if they were at a party.

Everyone is either looking at Senth (on the right), or glancing at Luc on the left. Luc is giving Senth a serious look because Senth has lost his tie. In case you’re not familiar with the stories, Luc is Senth’s adoptive father, having reared him from age three.

The Kin who is just to the right of Luc is Jawk Brighton. He had a fling with Luc while Luc was still in a relationship with Wulf Gabriel (center, with a bow tie).

I really love how Laura captured Wulf's smile and personality -- he is a supermodel and always looks amazing. In one book, Luc muses that Wulf's smile is in half the dentist offices in the Empire.

In the background to the right of Jawk is Alitus Vivaldi. Alitus is the Minister of Imperial Intelligence for the Imperial Armada, and up until the book Jawk, Tales of the Chosen, had been in an exclusive relationship with Empress Rheyn Destoiya.

When Luc and Wulf had a falling out, Alitus comforted Wulf, who was also a Chosen. They became partners in spying for the empress, and much closer than friends, much to Luc’s dismay.

Between Wulf and Senth is the blond-haired and blue-eyed Khyff Antonello, Senth’s half brother. He is checking out Luc's reaction.

With the exception of Jawk, these guys are in almost every book I've written set in the Tarthian Empire.

I thought it would be fun to see this art, especially as it reveals so much about their personalities.

Tales of the Chosen#MMRomance #SciFi #WriteLGBTQ

The Chosen serve the immortals known as Sempervians. Like any group, it has its hidden alignments, mistrust, and mistakes.

It also harbors enemies and spies within its ranks -- some known and tolerated, others hidden behind layers so convoluted even those who live forever can't figure them out.

Chosen is an acrostic for:
Called to serve
Honored to protect
Obedient to the vow
Safeguards of the truth
Enablers of life
Neutralizers of threats

Here's a quick peek at each book.

Wulf

Lust. Power. Forgiveness. Can a romance live forever?

To survive, superstar Wulf Gabriel must depend on the one man he swore he would never trust again - the most powerful and feared man in the empire - the Harbinger. Saving Wulf is simple; gaining his trust will take reaching into the Harbinger's own dark past and facing a truth he's avoided since the night Wulf's father died. Because of him.

Alitus

Passion. Addiction. Loyalty. Can true love bare its heart forever?

Alitus Vivaldi is a Better, an enhanced human bred for intelligence, discipline, and responsiveness. His combined talents in bed and politics take him from the Conqueror's favorite pleasure slave to her personal assistant. To help the Conqueror accomplish her secret agenda, he willingly forsakes his identity and pride, but when he must prove he's overcome his greatest fear, what will the noble Alitus do to survive?

Jawk

Pleasure. Trust. Possession. Is a betrayal of the heart forever?

Jawk Brighton works at Batchelors, a gay restaurant/club in the Top Tier district of Tarth City, where he meets the immortal Luc Saint-Cyr. Luc offers Jawk a deal too good to pass up, one night showing him and his Chosen, Wulf Gabriel, a good time in exchange for far more than his usual pay. But one night with the sensual Jawk will change the relationship between the immortal and his Chosen -- forever.

An Immortal's Guide to Tarth

A must have for fans of the Tarthian Empire series. This handy guide will inform, entertain, and provide peeks behind the curtain. Includes a who's who among the immortals.

The Chosen

In the secret society of the Chosen, being gay or straight is no different from being brown-eyed or blue-eyed. No one notices. But disloyalty? That's an offense punishable by death. No trial needed. In this trilogy, everyone's loyalty is questioned. How can you tell which follower is loyal to which leader? When you factor in leaders who have dual allegiances, knowing who to trust takes on a whole new level of danger -- especially for those who live forever...

Why is the symbol for Lucsondis 2 black I's? #Excerpt from Jawk #WriteLGBTQ #SciFi #Romance

In this scene from Jawk, the young hero and Luc have arrived at the starport.

While Luc handles a moment of business with his assistant, Jawk checks out the area.

And makes a startling observation...

Tarth City, Starport District
Empire Central Starport, Crossfire Docking Berth

After Jawk and Luc exited the car at the starport, Luc led the way. Jawk followed at a respectful distance while the man conferred with a female assistant who met them at the private Lucsondis Entertainment gate.

Luc Saint-Cyr was "the Man" here, and he was in his element. His tuxedo had a conservative cut in the classic Ainmar style he seemed to favor. His white shirt held an almost imperceptible touch of blue, enough to fool the eye into seeing it as more white than it was. Kin spotted a faint color difference as easily as humans spotted misaligned buttons.

While Luc signed a few handhelds for her, Jawk shifted his backpack to his other shoulder and took in the surroundings.

He'd been to the starport numerous times meeting clients, and had flown twice. None of the echo found in the public concourses existed here. Every wall was padded with a dark-hued cloth, the floor a glossy black tile that shone like clear glass. Spotlights highlighted paintings, sculpture, and walkways.

Through the glass wall on the left came the view of a small fleet of ships in their moorings. Two of the usual business skyhoppers sat there, planetside transport. Next to them sat another three with big interstellar engines near the ends of their sleek bodies, the unmistakable blue-chrome and black "II" symbol of Lucsondis and the designations C-1, C-2, and C-3.

Jawk laughed and covered his mouth, but he'd drawn Luc's attention.

The man did not speak, still engaged with his assistant. When he and the woman finished, she bowed to him and moved away. Luc motioned to Jawk to walk beside him up the ship's ramp.

"Something funny?"

"The symbol of Lucsondis," Jawk responded. "I always wondered what the two I's stood for. Never connected the fact that they were black. Now that I've seen you up close, I get it."

Luc cast him a sidelong look, those solid black eyes of his piercing.

This will get much worse #Excerpt #SciFi #MFRWhooks

In this scene from Alitus - Tales of the Chosen, the hero gets news he feared would come.

Betters are enhanced humans whose pheromones can addict and whose voices put a human in thrall.

Now regulated by the imperial government, they must wear an electronic veil that alters their voices and removes their pheromones. Protests have broken out around the Empire. As the Minister of Imperial Intelligence, Alitus must be kept apprised of the situation.

Excerpt

"Alitus." Byrin beckoned to him. "Her Majesty sent word. She needs you immediately."

He joined Byrin, who walked with him toward the elevator. "What's wrong?"

Byrin used the call button. "Three Betters protested outside Parliament by burning their veils. When police moved in, things got out of hand. Seven of them were killed."

Alitus stepped into the elevator, holding the doors open. "I thought you said there were three Betters."

"The Betters were working together to prevent the police from moving them. When their pheromones combined, it killed seven of the cops."

The impact of that event would have far-reaching consequences. "One Better alone can kill. We've seen that. Ganged up? Byrin, this is going to get much worse." He stepped back from the door.

"There's a full-fledged riot going on down there." Byrin put out his hand to stop the doors from closing. "Hey."

Alitus met the man's grim gaze.

"Watch your back."
