In this scene, Pietas had waited all day for Cyken to arrive, and now that the man has come aboard the ship, Pietas is eager to reconnect. They're in Pietas's quarters, and they've seated themselves on a couch.
But Cyken wasn't here to reconnect, was he? No. He'd come to negotiate on behalf of his new love. The young immortal Pietas himself had created.
How utterly vexing.
With a hesitant motion, as if reaching out to a wild animal, Cyken pressed the back of his fingers against Pietas's cheek in a hand-kiss.
He leaned into the touch, and returned it. "I've missed you, Cyken."
"You haven't cut your hair."
No 'I've missed you too?' No 'I can't live without you?' No 'I need you more than air?' Or 'You are my soul's fire. Stay with me forever.' No, he got, "You haven't cut your hair." Cyken might as well have stabbed him.
The man picked up a strand of Pietas's hair and rubbed it between fingers and thumb. "I'm glad you kept your hair long. Such pure platinum. I like it down. Always have." Luc released him and sat back.
Pietas only cut it in preparation for battle; he'd worn it long far less than he'd like. "I'll cut it for the ritual when I judge your Changeling."
Cyken's visage remained impassive and unreadable. Those solid black eyes hid much, but Pietas had angered Cyken before. A long-familiar blaze of fury flickered across the man's face and disappeared.
Which told Pietas he'd scored a hit. Why didn't that feel like a victory? One leg tucked under himself, he faced Cyken.
"You talk first." Cyken gestured. "Since you claim to know what I'll say."
"You want me to exempt Izzorah from the fealty test." Pietas required the test of all immortals who followed him. The only proof of immortality was coming back from the dead.
Anyone with the courage to die to prove loyalty deserved a place at Pietas's side.
"You never let anyone skip. Everyone knows that."
"You're right, and I won't start now." Good, then. That was settled.
Cyken broke into a slow smile, the corners of his eyes crinkling, making him look far less deadly than Pietas knew him to be. Cyken had aged during this lifetime, giving his face character, and... What was the word... Gravitas. Nobility. Revealing the majestic warrior Pietas had fallen so deeply in love with.
The one he loved still.
"Pietas." Cyken reached over and clasped Pietas's left hand. A touch strong but gentle, commanding yet yielding. As it had been with them from the beginning. But this time, Cyken had clamped his entire hand over Pietas's, immobilizing him. Holding him in place. Shifting the power.
If Pietas pulled back his hand, he acknowledged the shift. If he did not, he acknowledged the shift. For him, lose/lose either way.
Shrewd of Cyken. And downright cold-blooded.

In this scene, when Luc is asked to find a missing child, he's sure he's missing something. After all, this is the master of misdirection he's talking to: Pietas, who wants him to find a kid. Sure he does. Meanwhile, the king has brought out his panther and is petting the animal. It's far from tame, but Luc is quite familiar with it.
"I want you to locate the girl." Pietas stroked the panther. "Once you tell me where she is, you'll be free. I don't need you to rescue her. Just inform me."
"I see." Luc did not. "Find this ten year-old girl. Tell you where she is. That's it."
"Yes. Then after your Deshai graduates, you can move to Tarth and start that building you've been planning."
This was far too easy. Obviously, Luc had missed something. Mentally, he walked back through the last bits of conversation. "To clarify, you don't want me to bring her to you. You want me to find her and tell you where she is."
"Asked and answered." Pietas studied him. "Why is this so hard? Find her. Tell me. Not difficult. But it is urgent."
"What's so important about her?"
Pietas kissed the panther on the nose. "It's not her so much as her parents. If we find her and then take her to them, we'll have more influence."
Now they were getting somewhere. "And who are they?"
"My sister told you about the FTA, didn't she?"
"FTA." Acronyms filled his world, but this one? New to him. Why did that earlier dread raise its ugly head again? He'd probably be better off not knowing, but Pietas seemed to be waiting for an answer. "Not a word. What is it?"
"She didn't?" Pietas frowned. "Oh, I thought... Never mind." He tugged the panther's ears. "The FTA is the Forgotten Technologies Arena."
"Forgotten by whom?"
"The ancients. It's secret tech. Forbidden."
"Forbidden." The headache he'd faced over the last hour spiked through his brain. He rubbed his temples. Why him? Why now? "Pietas..."
"Oh, will you stop worrying?" The man looked over at him. "No one's going to get sucked into a wormhole this time."
Luc forced himself to take a deep breath and let it all the way out. "That's what you said the last time."

He can't touch her. But what if he kissed her just once...
To free his enslaved brother from a cruel master, Senth, an all-party-fun-and-games thief, must take on the hardest assignment of his life: stealing from the Empress. If he doesn't, his brother's life is forfeit.
To make matters worse, Senth has no choice but to work with NarrAy, a by-the-book rebel captain whose addictive pheromones could jeopardize the mission and destroy his will. When the unthinkable happens and NarrAy professes her love for him, Senth must decide if what he feels is real.
Can he trust this woman? If he loves her back, can he still save his brother? Or will he end up at the mercy of her pleasure forever...
βIf you like your heroines smart and your heroes smart-alecky, this book is for you. π
In this scene, Senth Antonello and NarrAy Jorlan have just met. She's considering whether to hire the professional thief to steal back the designs for a prototype her murdered parents designed. Because NarrAy is a Better, an enhanced human with addictive pheromones, she's not permitted to touch anyone skin-to-skin. Senth puts on gloves and prepares to shake her hand. All her life, she's been isolated from touch, so to risk touching is dangerous for them both.
NarrAy offered her hand. She'd practiced this with her father as a girl. "A gentleman doesn't try to overpower a lady's hand, NarrAy. But he isn't afraid to be firm either."
She held his gloved hand between both of hers. "I can see you're a gentleman, Mr. Antonello."
His cheeks reddened. "Just Senth, ma'am."
She squeezed Senth's hand. "And I'm NarrAy. Never Ms. Jorlan, nor ma'am. Not on this job. Understood?"
He met her gaze. "Does that mean you want me?" He blushed again and glanced down at their still-joined hands. "For the job, I mean."
She bit back a laugh. What an innocent. "So long as we're clear on who's in charge."
"When it comes to theft, I am. For everything else, you are, in every way."
He had no idea. But he had never once looked at her body. Maybe this red dress would be okay after all.
"Come sit." She gestured toward an adjacent room. "Let's talk business."

In this scene, Senth and Khyff are about to meet with Senth's father, Luc Saint-Cyr, at an infamous club in a bad part of town, when they run into a little snag. Seems Senth's "baby face" means no one takes him seriously.
Good thing his father -- known as the Man -- has a reputation that opens doors. And Senth has a real talent for liberating items...
As Senth approached The Ghost, the club's beefy Kin bouncer put out a hand. "Hold up, kid. You--" She motioned toward Khyff -- "Wait over there. Now..." She motioned Senth aside. "You got ID?"
Senth opened his cloak, revealing the lining with its unmistakable Thieves' Guild insignia, a skeleton key inside a slashed circle. He gave his Sen'dai's hand sign, two fingers held at the level of his waist.
"Ffffftt!" The bouncer made an apologetic shrug. "Sorry. Why didn't you say you were the Man's right up front?"
"His shouldn't have to." Senth brushed a hand down the front of the cloak. "And I'm no kid."
"Sorry, sir." She opened the door for both of them and bowed.
Once inside, Khyff held out one palm, and Senth slid his down it, hooked his fingers as Khyff did, and with hands clasped, gave one downward shake.
"C'mon, Bro." Khyff led the way past the darkened foyer.
Inside, music pulsed like a living entity. Throbbing bass tickled Senth's chest, and he coughed. Drums pounded. Colored lights swept the cavernous room. Strobes flashed across the congested dance floor, highlighting bobbing heads and upflung arms. Light glinted off human bodies slick with sweat, while bared and damp Kin furskin stuck out in points, laden with glitter.
"Stay close," Khyff shouted over the pounding music, standing next to Senth. He headed for the rear and left no chance to argue.
Senth skirted around the crammed dance area, liberating loose credit stubs clipped to belts. In this place, it wouldn't take long for the pockets of his cloak to bulge.
He tried not to stare at the half-naked slakes along the wall, but their clothing and attitude declared their availability. A pair of male and female slakes bent over a low railing, their pants around their ankles. Androgs handled their bodies like merchandise.
Khyff nudged him. "Comparison shoppers."
Senth frowned. "Not funny."
"Try being the one hanging over the railing." Khyff jerked his head to the side.

When you picked up the first book, it held such promise. There would be more to learn,Β more to see, more worlds for you to explore. When you finished it, you had a kind of “book hangover.” You were still so tied up in that book’s world that you weren’t sure you could handle another one. But the promise of seeing what happened to your new favorite characters was too strong. You succumbed and started reading the next book. And just like that — you were lost in the characters’ world again.
You can recapture the world you read about in Surrender Love, and Wulf. The Empire you explored in Alitus, Jawk, At the Mercy of Her Pleasure, and For Women Only is waiting to be found in the new Tarthian Empire Companion, an illustrated World-Building Bible and Guide to Writing a Science Fiction Series.
If you loved the universe in which those original stories were set, then you’ll be glad to know the Tarthian Empire is alive and well. This new book features all the characters, places, and things that made the other stories unique.
Before writing the first book in my Tarthian Empire science fiction romance series, I wrote 10,000 years of future history. The Tarthian Empire Companion features that history, plus Earth and its colonization of the galaxy. The companion focuses on the big picture. What events drove the wars? Who won them? What made the peace so short, and the centuries of fighting so dire? Did the immortal Sempervians evolve or were they created? What do they want from mankind? What characters, places, and incidents shape the Tarthian Empire today?
The Tarthian Empire Companion contains a full list of every character in every book, and peeks at books to come. This is the book I use to keep all the details straight. It’s written for readers as well as writers. If you write Scifi Romance and want to know how to keep a huge story world organized, this book is for you. I share all my details in this illustrated volume. If you love reading SF and loved my books, you’ll be able to look up details, go through the character lists, and learn inside secrets about the people and places. Always wondered what Peril, the game of the immortals, was all about? It’s in there.
The companion book is illustrated with original art and a few stock photos. My son, Jamin Allen, helped me create many of the images in this book. He’s a digital artist and began assisting me when he was in college at the Art Institute of Atlanta. In fact, he taught me how to use Photoshop. The work I’m able to do today is because of him.
I’m not a fan of changing basic terms for the sake of making them sound alien. For example, we “inch” along, not “millimeter” along, so I apply the same principle in my books. Diamonds are diamonds. Water is water.
Language, however, is malleable. Considering how far in the future my own stories are, there would be few (if any) words in English that we’d recognize. Being the practical sort, I kept many current terms.
What better way to describe rock music than to call it rock? Why call a flashlight a “mobile light source” or some other phrase for the sake of sounding different? It comes across silly and pretentious instead.
People shorthand words and phrases to things like OMG, LOL, BFF, deets, and probably one of the most famous shortcuts of all — the abbreviation for “more of the same” — “etc.” I prefer to use natural, understandable language whenever possible.
If you create a language, write down the words you use and keep a definition handy. This will keep you from later misspelling or contradicting yourself. You should also create a phonogram chart (list of sounds). This will help you create a richer language.
What terms do your characters use for slang? Define these and list them so you have a ready reference for future books. List how and why the words became slang. This not only helps you maintain consistency in creation, it also helps you with creating future slang you might need.
Here is a list of Kelthian Street Slang. It’s used in limited places, and there is far more listed here than I used in my actual books. However, I wanted a big list from which to choose a term.
Cobber is Kelthian street cant (characteristic language) used on Kelthia by slaves and gangs. The slang was used by Senth and Khyff in the books At the Mercy of Her Pleasure, and For Women Only. The characters Trink and Yvan (who own Batchelors) sometimes use it too.

All my books are being re-released in new formats. Surrender Love and its long-awaited sequel, Surrender Trust will come out at the same time. At the Mercy of Her Pleasure and For Women Only will be re-released with their sequel, Crystal Clear Truth, and will introduce a third Antonello brother, Darq. In the meantime, I’m sharing all the details of my world with fans.
If you not only read but also write science fiction romance, this book will guide you to build believable worlds, track details of your story, organize your writing, and lay out your story bible. My website has over 90 pages of material for my world.
Writer or reader, you’ll get a glimpse of the world building and complexity that is the Tarthian Empire.
