For Her Only by Kayelle Allen #SciFi #Romance

For Her Only by Kayelle Allen #SciFi #RomanceIn this excerpt from For Her Only, Ambassador Mehfawni Ruh has just discovered that her brother, Dallon, has been murdered. She must return to her home planet. But she's also Khyff's only hope of saving his brother.

She was his only hope

The chill in the room had nothing to do with air temperature. Now that Mehfawni knew about her brother's death, the collective gaze of her all-female staff stabbed into Khyff. He didn't need telepathy to read their thoughts. Their body language shouted at him.

Be gone, alien. Get out. You don't belong here.

Fawni's eyes filled with tears as she looked up at him.

Khyff melted. No matter how much the others hated him and wanted him gone, he couldn't leave her alone with this kind of news. What if it had been Senth who'd died? That possibility was all too real.

Khyff wrapped both arms around her and held her tightly against him, his cheek against her hair. "Oh, Fawni, I'm so sorry."

She clutched his leather jacket and clung to him as if all the strength had seeped out of her. He stroked her hair and kissed her brow.

"This can't be true." Her voice was muffled against his jacket. She turned and faced Kata. "There's been a mistake. It has to be wrong."

Kata didn't lift her gaze. "I'm sorry, Eetzesar. The news came directly from Tzesar Ehldani."

Khyff expected Mehfawni to crumble. She shook, but she drew herself up to her full height and took two steps away from him. With one hand on Kata's arm, she looked around the room at her staff. Ten Kin gazed back at her, their expressions full of pride and sorrow.

She cleared her throat. "Thank you. All of you. Kata, when do we return home?"

The young assistant looked up, revealing the tracks of tears on her face. "At dawn, Eetzesar."

He wanted to hold Mehfawni, bring her back into his arms, but she kept her back rigid, her head high.

"Good, Kata. I'll need you to help me with a few things." She told the others, "Get some rest. We'll all need our strength when we get home. Kata, stay, please."

Her staff dispersed quietly, and Mehfawni reached back and held Khyff's hand while she talked softly to Kata in her breathy native language.

What was he going to do now? Images rose in Khyff's mind. Senth swathed in bandages, lying in the hospital. NarrAy trapped in a glass cage. Both depending on him for their freedom. For their lives. And all he could do was stand here and hold Mehfawni's hand while the hope he had for saving them made arrangements to leave.

"Senth Antonello."

Khyff's attention riveted to Mehfawni's words. "What?"

She looked up at him. "You're such a male, Khyffy. Here I am making arrangements for your brother and his fiancée, and you're not even paying attention."

"Arrangements? What kind of arrangements?"

"You didn't hear a word I said, did you?"

"Well, you were speaking Felis, so I couldn't understand you."

"Oh." She touched her chin. "That was rude of me. I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize. You're upset. It's natural. What arrangements?"

"I can't leave you, Khyffy. I want you to come home with me."

His stomach went all hollow and his head light. His chest ached. He couldn't catch his breath, couldn't speak.

Felidae? Kin. Enemies. And...Mehfawni. He breathed. "I... Mehfawni, my brother... I—"

"Khyff, I know you can't leave when you're worried about your family. I couldn't do that either. So Kata's going to make sure my diplomatic immunity is extended to Senth and his fiancée. NarrAy's a Better, isn't she?"

"Yes, but—"

"Then your brother is addicted to her. He'll need her pheromones if he's going to heal properly. We need to get her out of prison so they can be together."

"Mehfawni, I don't understand." His heart pounded so hard, he was afraid he wouldn't hear her answer. Was this what hope felt like? Was there some way to keep Sen and NarrAy safe and escape the Conqueror's choke hold?

Mehfawni gave him a look that said he should try to pay attention, and then she grasped both his hands. "I read their story in the news, remember? It wasn't fair of the police to imprison her for defending her mate. At the time, I thought there wasn't anything I could do, but now that I know it's your brother, I can do something. If you come home with me as part of my entourage, you'll have diplomatic immunity, which extends to your family as well, if I wish it." She squeezed his hands. "And I do wish it."

Not if Mehfawni found out what he'd been sent to do, she wouldn't.

Khyff floundered, awash in a sea of emotion. His hope dashed on the rocky shore of reality, but he drew her hands to his mouth and kissed the back of each one. Maybe her diplomatic immunity could buy him time to find a permanent solution. Maybe she was still his best hope.

“Yes, yes. Don’t be tedious” #SciFi #Romance #MFRWhooks

For Her Only by Kayelle Allen #SciFi #Romance

Complete Set Antonello Brothers Series #SciFi #RomanceMeet the bad guys from For Her Only. In this scene, Empress Rheyn Destoiya had been planning a pleasant evening but her twin brother, Pietas, instigated a riot among her Praetorian Guard and took her assistant hostage. She disarmed Pietas, sent everyone else away and is now alone with him. The scene takes place in her palace office.

Meet the Bad Guys

"Why the drama, Pietas?"

"Your assistant wouldn't let me see you without an appointment."

"You insufferable..." She palmed the weapon fastened beneath her desk, then withdrew it and aimed at his head.

Pietas laughed, but he raised his hands. "I should've known you'd be armed."

With her other hand, she picked up his weapon and aimed it at him. "Ambidextrous, remember?"

He started to put his hands down and she thumbed his weapon to full. He lifted his hands back up. "Fine, Dessy. But I had to see you, and he wouldn't let me in. You know how I hate waiting."

"For that, you made my favorite your hostage and instigated a riot among my Praetorian?"

He lifted one eyebrow.

She sighed and clicked the safeties into place on both weapons. "What do you want?"

"I haven't seen you in twenty years, and that's all you have to say to me?"

"It's been eleven, and I shouldn't have seen you for at least ten more. And you had no right to interfere with anyone I claim as mine. Don't you ever touch Alitus again. If you do, I'll kill you in every way you hate." She tapped the desk. "And I know them all, my dear brother. Is that clear?"

He twisted his mouth. "Fine. I won't touch your pet."

"Or allow anyone within your control or influence to do so. So help me, Pietas, promise me or I'll—"

"Yes, yes. I promise. Don't be tedious." He dropped his lean frame into a wingback chair. "Besides, you're impossibly nasty when anyone touches your pets."

She scoffed. "Fine. Tell me what you want."

It had taken seconds to read the all too short bio #SciFi #Romance #MFRWhooks

For Her Only by Kayelle Allen #SciFi #Romance

For Her Only is a quick-reading Sci Fi romance with an edge. He's a broken hero who hungers for revenge. She's a warrior who thirsts for justice. The love neither expected holds them captive in the middle. Khyff has received a notereader (a tablet-type device) filled with information about his mother, who died when he was three. More info is available to him, but at what price? In this scene from For Her Only, Khyff, Senth and NarrAy are sitting at a table while Senth peruses the notereader. It's told from Khyff's point of view.

For Her Only by Kayelle Allen #SciFi #RomanceKhyff flung himself back in his chair. Every time he and his brother talked, they ended up arguing. He rubbed his eyes. The pleasant meal they'd started lay almost untouched and any appetite he'd had was gone.

It had taken seconds to read the all too short bio of their mother that his brother was perusing now.

Sileenya Antonello had run away from home on Trien at age ten and been arrested for theft at eleven. While still on probation, she'd disappeared at thirteen and been arrested at age fourteen for unlicensed prostitution. When her pregnancy test had come back positive, they'd placed her back on probation. She'd run away again and been fifteen when she'd given birth to Khyff.

Two years later she began living with an armada-enlisted man who transferred to Felidae, taking Sileenya and Khyff with him, but then he abandoned them. Her next boyfriend addicted her to drugs and prostituted her to newly recruited male Kin soldiers eager to spend their first pay to experience sex with a human female. When she became pregnant, he transferred off-planet, leaving them to fend for themselves.

An Elder of the Ruh clan found Sileenya huddled in an alley during a thunderstorm, holding the nearly lifeless Khyff in her arms. A scant month later, the Tzesar of the Kin ordered the halfbreed newborn destroyed, but the elder intervened and sold Senth to slavers to save his life.

Sileenya and Khyff had been cast back into the streets.

Days later, she was dead by her own hand and Khyff was a slave. Senth ended up at an orphanage where he was later adopted by Luc Saint-Cyr.

Senth poked at the notereader's buttons. "This thing is encrypted. What if the Empress knows who my father is? Don't I have a right to know that? You have to talk to her. Find out what she wants. Maybe she'll give you the key."

"Destoiya's not going to give me information without demanding a favor. I have nothing left to give that woman. She's already taken way too much."

"Khyff, that's unfair. I need this. You can't ice up and go all mental."

"What is that supposed to mean?"

His brother growled, a predatory cat sound that made the hair on Khyff's neck stand up. He scrambled out of his chair and stepped back from the table.

"That"— Senth pointed a finger at him —"is what I mean. I do anything Kin-like and you freak. Get hold of yourself, Khyff. You're falling apart. The brother I knew two years ago would've done whatever it took to find out who his father was. He would've helped me find mine."

Khyff shoved his chair under the table and leaned over it. "Don't lecture me about doing whatever it takes. If it wasn't for me interceding with Destoiya, you'd be dead."

"I'd be dead? I rescued you, in case you don't remember."

"NarrAy rescued me. You were unconscious. I carried you in my arms when we transported back aboard the ship. You had nothing to do with it."

Senth stood. "If it hadn't been for me, we wouldn't have gotten in the palace and found you."

"If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have been a captive in the first place!" He stepped around the chair and set a hand on the corner of the table. "I got my freedom and the next day the Empress held me hostage to control you."

A view out the window on Tarth #SciFi #Romance #MFRWhooks

Writing Character Emotions

One of the fun things about writing a series is that you get to use the same settings in different books. The Royal Arms Hotel has played host to characters in three books. In each of the scenes below, a character is looking out a window toward Tarth City Park, a wide stretch of park that splits the entire city. Each excerpt reveals how they feel about the city and/or about being there. The "trick" to writing emotion into scenes is describing the setting. If a character views a place with awe—or revulsion—we don't have to then tell the reader how they felt. See if you can determine how each character feels in the mini excerpts below. I'd love for you to leave a comment about what you think.

At the Mercy of Her Pleasure - NarrAy

Once they reached the Royal District, the car pulled up to the front of the luxurious Royal Arms Hotel. Shaped like a giant arrow being driven into the ground, it displayed Tyran engineering at its finest. Like their suite on the ship, the empire-class suite at the top sported a common living area and four bedrooms with private baths.

NarrAy's corner room had a breathtaking view of vast Tarth City, showcase of the empire. Impossibly tall spires drove through the clouds. Steady shuttle traffic climbed into the sky to the west, near the starport. The wide swath of Tarth City Park divided the metropolis in half all the way to the horizon, and the Cyr de Typhin River meandered through the center, its bright blue water glinting in the sun.

For Women Only - Mehfawni

Mehfawni's hotel room overlooked Tarth City Park, a green strip of manicured garden that cut the city in half as far as the eye could see. The family servants unpacked her belongings while she stood at the window and gawked like a child. Seventy stories below, ground traffic crawled, and trains snaked out of holes and zipped halfway up the sides of buildings into more holes. In the distance, shuttle traffic cluttered the sky. Slender structures speared the clouds. Closer in, right on the edge of the park, a massive black building towered over all the others, dominating the view.

Why didn't it fall over? It looked too big, too flat. Mehfawni went to another window, straining to get a better view. The tallest building on Felidae rose six stories. Her family still used horse-drawn carriages, even though all of them owned modern hovers too. She'd marveled at the starport in Ruh Township, a provincial outpost compared to vast Empire Central on Tarth. She'd slept through the jump to Sanity IV and missed the wonders of seeing the vast array of habdrills taking the planet apart.

Crystal Clear Truth - Joe

By the time Joe reached his room, darkness blanketed the world outside. Out on the balcony, he braced his hands on the railing and drew the moist evening air deep into his lungs. It had been ages since he'd experienced Tarth City's cool evenings. Every bit as good as he remembered. If he had to live anywhere other than Kyrenie, he'd pick here. A whisper of wind shivered across his skin, and he rubbed his arms.

His room lay on the one hundred and tenth floor of a building shaped like the letter V. Tyran engineering ensured it stayed upright, even during the worst storms and earthquakes. Nothing ramshackle. Pure genius, especially considering they designed for people with legs, while they, themselves possessed haunches and hooves.

Lights along the outside raced from the topmost floor downward, giving it the appearance of some gigantic arrow, burying itself. Up here, with fog starting, the light created an ambient glow.

Considering the size and population of Tarth City, the fact that he smelled fresh air and not filtered blankness spoke to an outstanding municipal plan. Creating a city that harmonized with nature began with masterful terraforming.

The major drawback of a megalopolis—lights stretched from horizon to horizon, blotting out the stars, with the single moon no more than a thin crescent of silver.

A vibrating rumble tickled his chest. Off to the west, a sleepliner descended toward the starport. That it made only this much sound meant powerful buffers held vibrations at bay. No matter how many times he visited this city or where he went within it, the sight of a massive ship landing almost soundlessly never ceased to amaze.

He'd have stayed out here all night, but he had a workshop to teach the next day, so he dragged himself back inside.

Go on a fun worldbuilding tour and visit the Nizamrak Building #SciFi #MFRWhooks #SciFiArt

Tarth City and the Nizamrak Building - found in multiple books
The icons on the right (partly covering the Nizamrak Building) show all the series in which this building plays a part.

I named the Nizamrak Building after my friend and mentor, the late author Barbara Karmazin. Nizamrak is Karmazin backward. BK, as she was affectionately known, loved the idea of having a site named after her. When my son Jamin created a print of the building, she was delighted.

It was always in my mind that the letters in Nizamrak were an acrostic, but I didn't know what they represented. When I wrote A Stolen Heart, I learned the meaning. A group of toddlers in a day care had been killed in "friendly fire" and Luc ( or "Cyr" as he was known in that life) was responsible. He never got over finding their tiny bodies, nor did he forgive himself. How could such a thing happen? You'll have to read A Stolen Heart to find out, but this incident had far reaching consequences and changed the course of many lives. The children's names were Nazeeya, Ida, Zahir, Addison, Makenna, Rayner, Amris, and Keagan. This is not the only thing to bear some aspect of their names, and because their deaths occurred over twelve thousand years ago, there is no telling how many ways the names have been used. But no matter what Luc does to honor them, he cannot free himself of the guilt he feels.

Locations inside the Nizamrak

    • Parking, Transportation, Tube Train - Underground (fifteen floors)
    • Bank of Tarth - Suite 100 (ground) - 800
    • Non-Lucsondis-owned businesses, medical facilities, storage, employee housing, daycare, etc. - Suite 900-4000
    • For Women Only - Suite 4100 - 5000
    • Lucsondis Entertainment - Suite 5100 - 6000
    • idBot - Suite 6100 - 7000
    • CyberEgo - Suite 7100 - 8000
    • Lucsondis Enterprises - Suite 19100 - 19900
    • Unoccupied (on purpose) - Suite 20000
    • Penthouse "The Loft" - Suite 20100 - 20300

Tradestandard labor laws require employers to provide living quarters to employees near the place where they work. Exceptions are available (for example, in Her Crystal Clear Truth, Shohn Lexius lives elsewhere yet has her office in the Nizamrak Building. Luc Saint-Cyr's penthouse is the Building's top three floors.

The two-hundredth floor (Suite 20000) is vacant by design to provide privacy and security for the Loft. The Loft (Luc Saint-Cyr's penthouse) supports a full parking deck for his fleet of cars, and an entertainment facility. The penthouse occupies the top three floors. Private living and sleeping quarters take up most of the top floor, and provide space for the rooftop pool. The rooftop also has weather and privacy shielding.

Because of its design and height, the Nizamrak Building is equipped with anti-terrorism devices and the highest security idBot can provide. Repulsor technology prevents aircraft from approaching, eliminating the need for traditional blinking lights required on tall buildings. Failsafes turn on the lights in case of power failures or emergencies.

Discrete express elevators run to the penthouse, including one solely for vehicles and delivery. A separate, stacked elevator system transports passengers rapidly to various sections of the building. An industrial elevator system handles delivery. Private parking for those qualified is housed underground. The Tube (the Tarth City tube train) makes scheduled stops. The Nizamrak Building is one of the few tall buildings into which the tube is not permitted to run. All transportation (except Luc Saint-Cyr's private fleet) is underground. This gives the black-glass fronted building a sleek appearance. It is wider at the base than at the top.

More information is available in the Tarthian Empire Companion.

If what this client says is true, Khyff will be the one paying #SciFi #FoundFamily #MFRWhooks

A Broken Heart - Thieves' Guild Academy #SciFi #SpaceOpera

Client or Friend?

As usual, Khyff's master hadn't allowed him to eat until he'd met his quota. First up: shower, clean clothes, food. Not necessarily in that order. He kept a few stale crackers hidden in his room for emergencies. He'd satisfied his last client, and was unscheduled the rest of the day. Or at least the next six hours.

Khyff bolted toward freedom.

"So you're an Antonello."

The way the client said it drew Khyff's attention. This particular client was one of the less odious. He didn't grab or cling, he was--thankfully--clean, and he tipped well. Still, the guy was paying for sex and Khyff had no choice. Being a pleasure slave meant you serviced the clients sent to you, or you suffered for it. In Khyff's case, refusing meant risking prison.

He would never go back there, no matter what they made him do here.

Khyff clenched his teeth and pasted on a smile. "Pardon?"

"Your last name." The guy continued getting dressed, seemingly in no hurry. "It's Antonello, right?"

"Why?"

"I never noticed before. It's right here on my receipt." He picked up his mobile and turned the screen toward Khyff. "I mean I've been here what... five times now?" He poked at the screen. "Whoa! Seven. Huh. I should have a free visit after three more."

Khyff choked back a retort. His master was giving away free visits with him? It would take hundreds of client visits to earn enough in his Freedom Savings Account so Khyff could buy himself. If his master was giving him away, it would take forever.

Khyff jerked open the door.

"You don't look like the other one."

Half a step into the hall, Khyff's heart stuttered. He made a slow pivot. "Other one?"

"The other Antonello. You look different."

The world went silent. Khyff came inside, shut the door and leaned against it. "So I'm sure I heard right. You know another Antonello."

"Yeah. I saw the name, and figured you had to be related. Antonello's not common. Not on Kelthia. I'm guessing you don't have much family here."

Good guess. More than three quarters of the world's population was black-skinned. Khyff had blond hair, blue eyes, fair skin.

Could this be a link to his missing mother? Did the client know her? Khyff fought the hope that rose within him. It had been how many years? No, he would not allow himself to hope. When you hoped, people could hurt you more.

Surrender Love: Antonello Brothers: Immortal #SciFi #MMromance

Breakfast with Luc

In this scene from Surrender Love, Izzorah is having breakfast with his human lover, Luc Saint-Cyr. This is Luc and Izzorah's first morning together as lovers.

Aware Luc will be gone most of the day, Izzorah asks if he can help.

Excerpt Surrender Love

He must forget about love, even when his heart begs for surrender... #MMRomance #SciFiA slow smile crossed Luc's face. "I may need a long, hot, sudsy shower and then help getting dry afterward."

A tender ache had Izzorah squirming in his seat. He offered a not-so-innocent smile. "We had that kind of shower before breakfast."

"Yes, we did." The man trailed a fingertip up Izzorah's arm, causing him to flush with heat. "But between now and then, I intend to work up a sweat. I'm going to need another one."

Izzorah squirmed again, spreading his legs farther apart.

"And then I'll need help to dress. Tuxedo affair. I'll teach you how to fasten everything. It's complicated. We may have to take everything off and put it back on a few times so you can practice."

He rose as Luc did and leaned across the table. He gripped Luc's robe to pull him close, deepening their kiss. The table dug into his thighs.

McDoth's return with milk and coffee broke them apart.

Izzorah's cheeks flamed.

Luc reseated himself, a self-satisfied smile on his gorgeous face.

Biting into his lower lip, Izzorah resisted the urge to cast breakfast aside and feast on Luc instead.

The android poured more coffee and left.

The size of Luc's dark hands as they wrapped the white mug brought back memories of the night before. Those hands had held him, turned him, lifted him. Loved him. Izzorah had given himself over in complete trust. He'd rested in Luc's strong arms. Those loving hands had bathed him, soaped his chest and shampooed his hair. Those same hands had dried him, lifting strands of his hair with patient fingers as he blew it dry.

His throat tightened as heat rose within.

This book has been out of print since 2014, and returns in an expanded edition with new scenes (almost 15k words) but the same tender love story and noble young hero.  Surrender Love will be available in print and KU.

He knew zip about kids, but how could he deny that little face? #GayDad #MMRomance #MFRWhooks

Honor above profit. Skill above chance. Family above all. Thieves' Guild Academy Bundle 1

Luc Saint-Cyr is waiting for the headmistress of the Thieves' Guild Academy when a toddler runs through the open door. The boy is clearly terrified, and Luc quickly realizes what the boy fears is the teacher who comes after him. Luc directs the boy to hide behind the door and sends the teacher on a wild goose chase. But now Luc is stuck dealing with a child, and what he knows about kids could be written on his palm, with plenty of room to spare. The boy, however, has immediately claimed Luc, though his rescuer doesn't know that yet.

Excerpt A Stolen Heart

Senthys blinked up at Luc. "I wanna go with you. I'll be good. I don't bite. I don't have claws." He held up his fingers. "See?"

Those words wrenched his heart. What had this child been taught about himself? About his people? Kin bit and clawed the enemy, not random strangers. Besides, the more dangerous person in this room wasn't the boy. This little innocent would be trading one monster for another.

"Senthys." Careful not to pull the boy's curls, Luc brushed them back from the lad's face. "Saving you from a monster doesn't mean I'm not one."

"Yes, it does." The child blinked away tears. "You're a good person. You smell good. Kin know."

"You mean you have kahlah?" A Kin's ability to smell emotion made it nearly impossible to lie to one of them. Quite unhandy for those with less scruples. "Do HalfKin have that ability?" The boy's grey pullover hung partway off his shoulder, revealing a striped shirt beneath. Luc adjusted it.

"Uh huh. I smell better than humans. I smell good people." Senthys touched Luc's chest. "You smell good."

"I think you're too young to know what 'good people' smell like yet."

"Yes, I do. My teacher stinks."

A window on a new world. Sneak peek at Crystal Clear Truth #SciFi #Romance

One of the fun things about writing a series is that you get to use some of the same settings in different books.

The Royal Arms Hotel has played host to characters in two books and the one I'm writing now features it as well.

In each of these scenes, a character is looking out a window toward Tarth City Park, a wide stretch of park that splits the entire city.

Slender towering structures speared the clouds.

The major drawback of a megalopolis -- lights stretched from horizon to horizon, blotting out the stars, with the single moon making no more than a thin crescent of silver.

Here's the blurb so far for the new book. I plan for this to be the last book in the Antonello Brothers series. We'll see! Sometimes characters have other plans.

Crystal Clear Truth - Antonello Brothers series #5

His entire life, Joe worked for this moment: Terraforming Specialist First Class, assigned to the firestorm planet. Yet tragedy mars the day with the accidental death of both parents. Grief-stricken, he plods through family decisions and moves forward, surviving day by day. While reading his mother's handwritten diary, he discovers a folded flatpic of a teenaged girl and the cryptic words, "our son's mother." He searches for details, determined to know more.

When a friend asks Shohn to help a locate someone, she jumps at the chance. She's researching the firestorm planet for her employer, who seeks access to eyes-only information. Helping Joe might be her opportunity to uncover long-hidden secrets.

A window on a new world. Sneak peek at Crystal Clear Truth #SciFi #Romance

As their unexpected friendship deepens into more, each mystery they solve reveals yet another hidden layer. The truth they seek could immobilize interstellar commerce in the empire. To protect the Empire they both love, they must solve the riddle behind the elusive young woman in the picture, and trust one another.

But how can they trust when the "truth" they've been fed is a lie?

A slow-burn, forced proximity romance set in the far, far future in an empire full of treachery, mystery, and long-hidden secrets...
