Senth likes who? No way. A fun excerpt from At the Mercy of Her Pleasure #SciFi #Romance #MFRWhooks

At the Mercy of Her Pleasure #SciFi #Romance

In this scene from At the Mercy of Her Pleasure, NarrAy and Encie, one of her aides, have just observed a quick interchange between Senth and NarrAy's other aide, Broxus, and mistakes what and who Senth likes.

The reality is, Broxus had thought Senth was attracted to Encie when Senth had actually meant he likes NarrAy. Because the women had showed up while they were talking, Senth and Broxus had resorted to a kind of code.

The result? NarrAy has completely misread the situation.

He likes who?

NarrAy bit out a curse and folded her arms.

"What?" Encie sidled closer.

"He likes Brox."

"Senth? No."

"Why else would he look so embarrassed? And come on, helping Brox with his tie? Since when did Brox ever care about that? It's obvious Senth likes him and they wanted to be alone."

"No way." Encie shook her head. "Brox is not interested in his own gender."

"How would you know?"

Encie wiggled her eyebrows.

"You and... No." Brox's door remained shut. NarrAy squinted. "When?"

"Before we came to work for you. We're long since over each other."

"So..." NarrAy turned back to her. "You don't think..."

"I know for a fact that Brox isn't."

NarrAy tapped a finger against her lips. "Good."

Encie leaned closer. "There's one way to find out. Touch him."

"No. Besides, Senth is on Shackle."

"Think of it as a challenge. Can your pheromones beat the drug?"

"No." Folding her arms, NarrAy turned away. "That wouldn't be right."

"You've been flirting with Senth since he got in the car back in town. Don't even try to tell me you don't like him." A hand on her hip, Encie gave her an arch look. "He and his brother are the hottest things I've seen in weeks. Did you see the abs on him? I almost swallowed my tongue."

NarrAy paced the room, her pulse heightening.

Senth's door opened, and he came out dressed in immaculate black-and-white evening attire. Black tie against his throat, loose curls brushing his shoulders. The suit accented his wide shoulders and narrow waist. He looked every bit as rich as he was supposed to look. Those diamond studs were no doubt real, and probably stolen. What thief would buy those things?

His big, pale blue cat-eyed gaze focused on her, causing NarrAy to tingle all over. He looked away and adjusted a diamond cufflink.

Senth's untutored vulnerability and restrained sensuality lashed at her senses. Sweet, charming, intelligent. All the man needed now was the right woman to awaken his passion.

NarrAy strolled toward him.

“Feast your eyes, vultures.” Pietas levels a challenge #SciFi #PietasFans #MFRWhooks

bnr

Origin of Pietas: Bringer of Chaos - #SciFi #SpaceOpera

His people permit Pietas no choice. He must attend insipid peace talks on Enderium Six and what's worse, be polite. To humans.

In this scene, Pietas has been betrayed and trapped, and now they're coercing him to enter a lifepod.

Feast your eyes, vultures

The leaders of his people gathered in sleep around Pietas, sealed inside their curved, steel stasis tubes.

He folded his arms. "Feast your eyes, vultures." He lifted his chin. "You think to imprison me? You think to bring me down like a hunted animal?" He indicated the other life-pods. "I will not cower before you. I will not bow. I will not kneel. I will not serve. I will never submit. Humans were made to be ruled, not by my people, but by me."

The silhouettes above him contrasted with the bright light behind them. One by one, they slipped away, until one remained.

"Fighting us accomplishes nothing." The disembodied voice echoed in the chamber. "Enter the pod, Pietas, or we'll siphon the air. You'll die."

"I'll revive. I've died countless times. I do not fear death. Death fears me."

"So be it. Since you're so set on dying, have it your way. I told you if you didn't cooperate, I would detonate the bombs within the hostages you took aboard your ship. See for yourself."

On the opposite wall, an image of his ship sparkled into life, and a bloom of light filled the screen. A mass of debris shot in all directions.

"Your crew has ceased to exist."

"That image is a farce. You would not dare to destroy the council's flagship, and you will not destroy the council. You are cowards. You lock us away in a barren room and threaten our people. This is why humans do not deserve freedom. You are worthless, miserable liars."

"Believe me, your crew is quite dead. The universe is a safer place for it."

"Untrue. It will never be safe for humans. Especially for you."

Call Pietas lord, but not “your majesty” #PietasFans #SciFi #MFRWhooks

Origin of Pietas: Bringer of Chaos - #SciFi #SpaceOpera

Nik Nitsvetov (Pietas performer)

Cosplayer and model Nik Nitsvetov performs as Pietas in cosplays. His photographer is Belyaeva Yuliya.

Pietas was introduced in the book For Her Only. Since then he's shown up in nearly every book I've written.

The immortal king is a physically beautiful male Ultra* who appears young, despite being over twelve thousand years old. He ages the way a mortal would. Ultras die, but return in youthful form.

He and his twin sister are the only naturally conceived and born Ultras.

Name and Reputation

The name Pietas comes from the word "pieta," meaning "representation." A famous statue by Michelangelo called "The Pieta" represents a dramatic event in Christendom. Another word for "pieta" is "creation." Pietas was considered (at his birth to two supposedly infertile immortals) to be the highest creation, the epitome of success. His mother, Helia hid her pregnancy from all but a close circle of others, fearful of what might happen if humans discovered she was fertile.

A female child delivered only minutes after Pietas was considered a delight, and a good omen. They named her Dessy from the root word decet (dess-say) meaning good or proper. We know her today as Empress Rheyn Destoiya, or the Conqueror. She detests being called Dessy, so Pietas sometimes calls her that to annoy her.

Other names for Pietas in human history are Marauder, Impaler, Hammer of God, Soul Ripper, Destroyer of Worlds, Slayer of Innocents, and Hound of Hell.

The name "Impaler" comes from him having thrown a javelin at a cowardly king who fled the battlefield, leaving his troops without a leader. After the man's followers cheered his death, a quick huddle of officers promised fealty to Pietas on condition he accept the army's full surrender without further violence.

Command

Upon taking command, Pietas oversaw provision of adequate food and shelter for the starving troops. He then privately interviewed random soldiers, asking which enlisted should be promoted, and which officers warranted demotion and why. Once he had a consensus, he followed through on their suggestions. He had his aide research any officer considered unfit and determine if their actions were from ignorance, or arrogance. All were assigned a mentor. Those who "shaped up" were retained. A small handful of ne're-do-wells were given a choice to mend their ways or prepare for death. This method of dealing with conquered populations won him loyalty, even among humans.

Yet there was a never-ending list of those who refused to surrender. For them, he showed no pity, earning himself a fearsome reputation. That notoriety resulted in mostly peaceful surrenders throughout the Colonies of Man.

Throne

Pietas decided long ago to not let anyone call him Your Majesty. In his words, "There's nothing majestic about me or what I do as leader. Everything I accomplish or plan comes from the people following me and for their benefit. It's all right to call me "lord" but not with a capital L. I prefer simply being called by my name, no matter who is speaking to me."

For royal court, he wears a simple silver circlet on his brow as a symbol of rank. He refused using a throne until a group of his soldiers carved one out of a tree and padded it with turquoise-colored leather. It bears no adornment or carving.

Dessy's Throne

Dessy possesses an ornate chair of state in the Tarthian Empire, where she is Empress. Carved from wood, it resembles a giant ruby dragon with sheltering wings, encrusted with rubies and garnets by the immortal artist Taral.

Unlike her brother, she prefers Your Majesty, but allows those close to her abbreviate it to "Majesty" when in her presence.

*Ultra - genetically-enhanced human whose metabolism heals so rapidly they are essentially immortal. Originally created as super-soldiers, they revolted and took command over human populations.

Story: When the truth isn’t reality #SciFi #PietasFans #MFRWhooks

Origin of Pietas: Bringer of Chaos - #SciFi #SpaceOpera

You know that feeling when you think you know the whole story? You know the truth? So you make a decision and you run with it. When you careen into a wall you didn't see, you pick yourself up and take a second look at where you're headed. Or, if you're stubborn like me, you back up and run at it again. POW! Down you go one more time.

When I began writing my Tarthian Empire series books I knew who the villain was. His name was Pietas and his story was obvious. He was irredeemable, bad through and through. End of story.

About five books in, I hit a wall.

I couldn't make sense of this villain of mine. Pietas was clearly the bad guy, yet while his people feared him--with good reason--they were loyal to the death. He hated humans with such great passion that he wanted to destroy them all, yet he was taking his sweet time going about it. He could have wiped out humanity a thousand years ago.

He hadn't. Why not?

Secrets Behind the Story

I sensed a conspiracy. My characters were keeping a truth from me. How could I write a proper story if I didn't know what was going on?

After flipping through copious notes and rereading my own books, I realized I had a ton of material on Pietas. I began writing down impressions, verifying them against the canon of the books and making sure I had the real story.

The Story Iceberg

Pietas had revealed only ten percent of the story. Like an iceberg, only a small part of a story is visible. The rest comprises its true reality.

I needed to learn more.

It took me months of digging, talking with readers, talking with my beta readers and editors, inundating my critique group with multiple versions of the story's first chapters, but finally I figured out the true story.

My villain wasn't a villain.

I literally sat back in my chair and slapped my forehead. How could I have been so blind? I had allowed his actions to become my interpretation of the truth. In the story world, Pietas was playing a part. Making himself out to be the bad guy, while in reality, he was far from it.

Oh, I can hear you thinking. "You wrote the guy, Kayelle. How can he be any kind of mystery?" Well, that's because you just don't know him yet. Read one of the books about him and you'll see. He is not easy to know, but he's fascinating once you do.

After I wrote the first book about his real story, Origin of Pietas: Bringer of Chaos, a reviewer said: "He's painted as a complete psycho in other books. It's really great to get some insight into who he truly is." I had a jump-up-and-down happy-shouting fit when I read that.

I had succeeded in revealing the truth. That was what I had wanted more than anything.

As soon as I finished the first book, I jumped in on the second.

Pietas gains unwelcome attention from a telepath #SciFi #PietasFans

Forged in Fire: Bringer of Chaos #SciFi #SpaceOpera

In this scene from Forged in Fire, Pietas and the search party sent to find him have stopped their upward mountain trek for a short break. Prior to their reunion the previous day, Pietas had spent a year in confinement, hands bound behind him. He'd been starved to the point of death, but because he's immortal, he could not die. Although he's healed since, the brutality left a lasting toll on his once robust physical body. As they prepare to get underway, he unwittingly reveals the impairment and becomes the focus of unwanted attention from a telepath.

Unwanted Attention

Wincing, Pietas stretched to ease cramps in his back.

"Tas!" His sister had started using her childhood name for him since they'd reconnected the day before. "Are you hurt?"

Before he could answer Dessy, a quick telepathic scan from Joss swept over him. Pietas had still been a teenager when she'd trained him to shield his mind from those with her gift. Not that he'd ever been able to block her. She was far too powerful, but today, she'd read him with no more difficulty than a hunter spying trail signs. He'd been near no Ultra telepaths for over a year.

His affinity with Six had made him careless and he'd neglected the basic lessons Joss had taught him.

It wasn't a lack of trust. Trust had never been an issue with Joss.

He treasured her, but he ought not to have been so unguarded and open. Vulnerable.

"Pietas." Joss stood. The waves of emotion he picked up from her held love and concern in equal measure. And a bit of disappointment. "You're injured."

He ducked his head like a schoolboy who'd forgotten his lessons. Admit mortals had damaged him? Never. Neither would he lie about it. He'd take better care to hide the pain.

"Don't worry about me." Whistling, he circled a finger in the air. "Let's go! Long climb ahead. Joss, you lead." Last thing he wanted was her behind him, using him as an object of focus. He loved her, but this was unwanted attention.

What telepaths focused upon, they controlled.

#Excerpt A Broken Heart - He refused to allow himself hope #SciFi #MFRWhooks

This is the opening scene from A Broken Heart, showing how Khyff, the elder of two Antonello brothers, found out his brother had not—as Khyff had been told—been killed at birth. If his brother was alive, that had to mean their mother had saved him... but she'd never come back for Khyff.

Excerpt A Broken Heart

Kelthia, Miraj City, Central City District
House of Leather & Lace
Sofftem 13, 4662 Tradestandard

With his last client satisfied, nothing stood between Khyff Antonello and eight full hours of free time. As usual, Khyff's master hadn't allowed him to eat until he'd met his quota. First up: shower, clean clothes, food. Not necessarily in that order. He kept a few stale crackers hidden in his room for emergencies.

"Hey, wait up."

An arm's length from the door, Khyff halted, but didn't turn around. "Yes?"

"So you're an Antonello, huh?" This client was one of the less odious. He didn't grab or cling, he was clean, and he gave generous tips. Still, the guy was paying for sex and Khyff had no choice. Being a pleasure slave meant you serviced the clients assigned, or you suffered the consequences. In Khyff's case, refusing meant returning to prison.

He would never go back there, no matter what they made him do here.

"Yeah. It's Antonello." Khyff turned back and crossed his arms. "So?"

"I never noticed before. It's right here on my receipt." The guy picked up his mobile and poked at the screen. "I mean, I've been here what... five times now? Whoa! Says here it's seven. Huh. I should have a free visit after three more."

Khyff choked back a retort. His master was giving away free visits with him? It would take hundreds of client visits to earn enough in his Freedom Savings Account so Khyff could buy himself. If his master was giving him away, it would take forever.

He jerked open the door.

"You don't look like the other one."

One step into the hall, Khyff's heart stuttered. He made a slow pivot. "What?"

"The other Antonello I know."

The world went silent. Khyff went back inside, shut the door, and leaned against it. "So I'm sure I heard right... You know another Antonello."

"Yeah. I saw the name and figured you had to be related. Antonello's not common. Not on Kelthia."

Like the client, over three quarters of the world's population was black-skinned, dark-haired, and dark-eyed. Khyff had fair skin, blond hair, and blue eyes.

Could this be a link to his mother? Did this guy know her? Khyff crushed the hope that rose within him. It had been how many years? No, he would not allow himself to hope. When you hoped, people could hurt you more. But he had to know.

"Is it a woman?" Khyff gestured toward the client. "This other Antonello."

"Guy. Fifteen, sixteen, maybe? Has a baby face. Hard to tell." The guy pulled at his own graying hair. "His is curly. Dark. But now that I think about it, he's a HalfKin. He wouldn't be related to you."

HalfKin. Half-human, half-feline humanoid Kin.

All the air left the room. Khyff fought to drag in a breath. "What's his first name?"

"Seth, I think. No, Senth. Yeah, that's it. Senth Antonello."

Light grayed around the edges.

The guy took a step forward, concern on his face. "Hey, Khyff, you okay? You look pale."

Hearing the name Senth Antonello catapulted Khyff into the past. To the point in his life when his world had unraveled, torn itself apart, and dumped him into hell. He hit the floor with a smack that stung his hands and knees and crumpled into a ball. His stomach roiled, and he clamped his jaws, forcing back nausea with sheer force of will.

"Man, Khyff! I'll get you some water." The client crossed the room to the sink. A sound of splashing followed, and he returned with a glass. "Sit up and lean on me. Here you go. Sip this."

Khyff shook so badly he could not fight off the man's touch. He let no one touch him. Not if he could prevent it. He could not bring the glass to his lips.

"Easy. Let me help you." The client took the glass and held it for him. "There. Take a sip. Okay. One more. There. That's better." He twisted around and squinted into Khyff's eyes. "Geez, I'm sorry. I had no idea. Who is this guy? Are you related?"

How many HalfKin could there be with a name like Senth Antonello? Khyff pushed himself away from the man. Never show weakness, the other brothel slaves had warned him. None of these guys are your friends. It's not personal, just business. Give what you gotta give and get out.

Still... Seven times this guy had been here, and Khyff had no idea what his name was. Never asked. Never wanted to know. It wasn't like they were dating. The guy paid for his time. Amazing he came back. But he had been kind. Had to give him that.

Khyff pasted on a smile. "Look, do you know this other Antonello?"

"Oh, sure. He's a thief." The guy grinned. "I work at the Thieves' Guild, and he's a member. Kinda famous, actually. Everybody knows him. Belongs to the Man."

"What man?"

"The Man. You know. The Harbinger."

"Never heard of him."

"You must be new on Kelthia. Don't worry about it. You'll learn. Everybody knows the Man."

Khyff gave the guy another smile. "Think you could set up a meet? I'd like to make sure it's who I think it is." He controlled his stomach by swallowing, hard. Made himself say the words. "I'd make it worth your while."

"Consider it done."

Supposedly, Senth had been killed at birth. He was the reason Khyff's mother had been missing for over a decade, and why Khyff was a slave.

So why wasn't his brother dead? And where, exactly, was their mother?

If this was an imposter, Khyff wanted answers. If Senth was alive, Khyff would make sure, once and for all, that his little brother released what the Kin had tried to steal from him at birth.

His final, gasping breath.

6 Ways to review a book and 4 ways not to #BookReview #Read #FreeBook

6 Ways to review a book and 4 ways not to #BookReview #Read

I'm not the only author who adores reviews.

Honestly, they can be worth more than a sale.

Think of it this way: I make about thirty-five cents on every dollar of a book. True story. Obviously, that amount isn't going to make or break me financially. But if someone leaves a great review on a book, it might entice more readers to pick it up. Which means over time, those little bits add up.

Readers count on reviews to tell them whether a book is worth buying. I know I do. What about you?

As an indie author, every review I get helps my visibility, which means I can spend more time writing and less time marketing. If you want me to put out more books and sequels faster, giving me reviews is one way to make that happen.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of reviewers who don't do reviews correctly, or truly don't know how to write one.

I've given you some basic dos and don'ts below. Glance through them to make sure you are including some of the dos, and are not guilty of the don'ts.

The Do List

Do leave a line or two (or more, if you wish) about your experience with the book.

Do talk about how it made you feel. The emotional experience is the most important one you have while reading a book, and the same is true of other readers who might be looking for that type of experience.

Do let people know why you liked or didn't like the book, and why you will or won't read subsequent books in the series or by the same author.

Do share how it starts and what drew you into the story.

Do talk about the positive aspects of the story, the world, and the characters you met inside the story.

Do be direct and to the point.

The Don't List

Don't leave novella-length reviews. It's okay to gush about how much you loved a book, or use whatever words are necessary to warn readers about books they shouldn't waste their money on, but again, direct and to-the-point is best.

Don't give a strong opinion without a reason. "I hate this book" or "I love this book" but without saying why doesn't help other readers form an opinion. For example, if a book was too spicy for your taste, say so, because readers who prefer spicy books will be more likely to buy it.

Don't share spoilers that reveal secrets, or talk about how the book ends. Not cool!

Don't give super-intricate plot details Readers want quick and to-the-point reviews.

Now what?

You don't have to do all the dos, but this is a good starting point. Leaving a review helps support both authors and fellow readers.

Thank you in advance for taking time to share your opinion.

6 Ways to review a book and 4 ways not to #BookReview #Read

What members are asked to do:

* Sign up on StoryOrigin (it's free). This is where you will pick up all books available for review.

* A review can be placed on any site.

* It doesn't have to be a five star review. I prefer honest responses.

* Once you've posted the review, enter the link on the book's StoryOrigin page (hint: save the email you get with the link to the book). That's it!

Once you create an account on StoryOrigin, you'll be able to choose from many other authors, but you are under no obligation to do so.

Please, if you hate a book -- email me instead of reviewing. I love talking to readers. And if you LOVE it -- definitely feel free to email me! I listen and want to know what you think. Your input makes a difference.

You may invite a friend to join.

Meet a single dad who finds love in an unexpected place #Excerpt from Package Deal an anthology by BBB Publishings #BBBpublishings #Anthology

In this excerpt from the Package Deal anthology, the single-dad hero of Hacking Planet Fun makes a plea for saving a little girl.

"I object in the strongest terms." Brinn Halin came to his feet. "Abandoning a four-year-old to the imperial foster system is wrong."

"No one's abandoning her." Kam Zavala, Master of the Academy, leaned back in his chair near the end of the oval table. "She'll be returned to the imperial facility where we got her. She's unsuitable. There's no malice in the board's decision. It's simply a good decision for the Academy."

Could the man not hear how cold-blooded those words were? "And how will that good decision affect a little girl?"

Kam, like the seven others seated around the table, had eyes as lifeless as the flat black tabletop.

Brinn straightened. "Yes, the imperial services will house and educate her, but that's it. She'll be a number, not a person. We rescued Dresden Fasra because she's a HalfKin. She may be four, but her vocabulary is akin to a twelve-year-old." With the flick of a hand, Brinn cast a holographic chart into the center of the table. "Her dexterity, speed, and comprehension are off the charts compared to human students."

"We're familiar with HalfKin stats." With a curt wave, Kam dismissed the chart. "Intelligence and ability don't change the fact that she's not a good fit. She needs to go."

"What she needs is training only the Academy can give her."

"Training with whom?" Kam folded his hands on the table. "This child has been through three foster families in the Academy in as many weeks. Each one marked her as ungovernable."

"All that means is they couldn't manage her. She's spirited."

"Spirited?" Kam picked up his notereader. "According to the first family, Dresden Fasra is, and I quote, 'difficult, obstinate, impudent, and impertinent.'" He stroked upward on the reader. "The second found her 'insulting, insolent, and flippant.' The third family simply stated, 'tantrums.'" He tossed the device onto the table. "With those qualities in her record, no Sen'dai in their right minds would foster her. The Guild wants children who can be trained as thieves. This girl is unsuitable. Thieves require patience and discipline. She has neither."

"Of course not. She's four!" Resisting the urge to raise his voice, Brinn braced both hands on the table. This was a board meeting, not a shouting match. "The lack of patience and discipline is why we foster young children. We mold them and teach them those skills. Dresden's parents were killed when she was two, and for half her life she's been housed with the imperial agency. Do any of you have a clue what life in that system is like?"

No one spoke.

"Well, I do."
