Benefits of Coloring

In their Health division, the news giant CNN suggests you take a mental health day and enjoy coloring. Art therapy (making and creating artwork) can help “explore feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness” and more. Art helps adults de-stress and self-express. The activity can help achieve mindfulness.

Some books call themselves “art therapy.” Are they? It’s more likely you’ll achieve less stress if you’re creating the art yourself, rather than filling in someone else’s design in a coloring book. Painting on a blank canvas, laying out the design for a dress and then sewing it, building a sculpture with clay, and other art activities use a skillset different from coloring simple designs created by another person.

Does that mean you shouldn’t do it? Absolutely not. Adult coloring books are relaxing, fun, and takes your mind away from your troubles. That can be a good thing!

How to Use Adult Coloring Books

The first thing to remember is — Relax! This is supposed to be fun. Now, with that out of the way, let’s talk about technique.

Don’t try to color the entire picture at one time. Your hand might cramp. You might lose patience. You could run out of ink. The point of adult coloring is to relax and take your time. Don’t do this on a schedule where you’re snapping your mental fingers saying “Hurry up!” Again, this is fun.

If you haven’t spent time coloring in a coloring book since you were a kid, it might surprise you that A) you still know how, and B) you need practice. If you’ve never colored before, congratulations! Coloring pictures will be relaxing and produce something beautiful you can enjoy seeing.

I print coupons on my computer, and there are always long strips of white paper left over. I use these to do color swatches when I’m working on a project.

Some basic “rules”
* Work from the outside in. It will help you keep from going outside the lines (if you’re trying to avoid that).
* Press gently. You can build up color by repeating strokes.
* Have a sharpener nearby for pencils. Use it often.
* Put the caps back on your pens. They might not dry out, but cleanup will be easier if you don’t have to find missing caps.
* Test your ink on a scrap paper first.
* You can never have too many pencils or pens!
* Color outside the lines. It’s okay. No one is going to slap your hand. Scribble in the margins and make your own doodles.
* Rules are made to be broken. The main thing is to have fun and relax.

Do I need special pens or pencils?

Not really. Feel free to sit down with your kids while they’re coloring and use their box of crayons. Not only is it a fun family time, it takes you back to your childhood. Remember opening that new box of crayons in school? The smell of the fresh crayons? Ahh… nice.

If you prefer fine-tipped pencils or gel pens, or you like vibrant colors, I can recommend these coloring pens and pencils for adult coloring books on Amazon.  Any will do. They are all good. These are popular items and are often on sale. You might find a real steal!

Kelthia, home of the Thieves' Guild

The planet Kelthia is one of the original worlds of the Tarthian Empire. Planetary shielding used in the empire has the effect of making some planets appear green. This is caused by HFO [harmonic frequency overlay], a simplistic way of saying the shields bend light. Inside the atomosphere, color variations are invisible to the human eye but Tyrans perceive it as shifting sky-colors or aurora borealis.

Kelthia, home of the Thieves' Guild

Kelthia, home of the Thieves' Guild

Kelthia holds the distinction of being the wealthiest world in the Empire, Tarth only slightly behind. This is due in part to Kelthia's natural resources, but a large portion is earned through a most unusual source.

The Thieves' Guild has existed for centuries, and is a union-operated business. There are forty-six levels, each attainable only by rigorous testing. Kelthian law protects members of the union by granting immunity from prosecution for thieves operating under valid contracts. Thieves from this union are in demand on all worlds in the empire, and are especially useful in corporate environments. Pilfered trade secrets, gained under the auspices of a valid thief-contract, account for nearly twenty percent of the gross income for the planet.

Kelthian Thieves' Guild, Arcane Entrance

Members of the union pay taxes on only the first ten percent of their earnings, hence the common slang term for getting away with something, "He pays a thief's taxes".

Prostitution is legal throughout the empire, but it is lauded here, and Kelthian sex workers are often the epitome of beauty. Kelthia is also known for the manufacture of fine liquor, jewelry, and high fashion.

Kelthian natives are almost all dark-skinned, with jet-black, tightly curled hair and brown eyes. Only a small percentage have fair coloring.

One of the best-known Kelthians in the empire is Luc Saint-Cyr, aka "the Man," or the Harbinger, so-called for his ability to spot trends and influence. At one time he served as the Grand Master of the Thieves' Guild, but retired and turned his hand to business on Tarth. He is the wealthiest man in the empire, and is considered second in influence only to Empress Rheyn Destoiya, the Conqueror. The phrase "a harbinger of wealth" refers to earning power, and is a direct reference to him.

The impressive front of the Kelthia Thieves' Guild is shown. Note the size of the people compared to the building. Level Sixteen members and above earn an exclusive entrance. There is a separate entrance for the public.

The Thieves' Guild Council is considering opening for the first time to non-humans such as the Kin, Tyran, and Chiasmii, this will undoubtedly be the subject of much debate.

A skeleton key has always been the symbol of the guild. When wearing their cloaks (earned at Level Fifteen) thieves are able to enter through the wall bearing the giant key symbol. The cloak enables disruption of a special field which then allows its wearer to bypass what seems like solid marble. The cloak is activated by the wearer's DNA, thereby preventing its use by anyone other than the true owner. It has many other features.

Thanks, but no thanks. Are you doing this one simple thing to end #PlasticPollution #NoPlasticStraws

There’s one simple thing each person can take to reduce plastic pollution in our oceans. Ask for no plastic straws in your drinks. Americans use 500 million straws daily. Once. That happens day after day, filling our landfills and contributing to ocean plastic.

What if every person reading this post shared it with a friend and pledged to reduce the amount of drinking straws they used each day?

Do that one simple thing: Here’s how

1. Personal commitment
Make a personal commitment to reduce your use of plastic straws when you dine out. When you order a drink, simply say, “No plastic straws, please.”

2. Ask your friends and family to commit
Share your commitment to no plastic straws with friends and family.

3. Ask your favorite restaurants to serve straws only on request
This will reduce plastic straw purchases, saving them money. If  restaurants served paper straws (or bambo, glass or stainless steel), it would make an impact on our communities and our world. You can even share how they can become part of the “No Plastic Straws” business movement. Want a printable card you can leave when you pay your bill? Click here and look at “Level 2” under Take Action.

4. Carry a reusable straw of your own
Amazon has a selection of reusable straws in bright colors and in steel and other forms. Try this one. These colorful straws fit the Yeti tumbler and other reusable drink bottles and come with a cleaning brush. You also get a cleaning brush with these sleek stainless steel straws  or with a cool bamboo set from The Other Straw.

My goal isn’t to sell you straws. It’s to make you aware of the problem and give you a step to take. Every step we take toward a solution makes a difference.
5. Find companies that pledge to use less plastic and give them your support.

Here’s one you might not have considered. Flooring. You will walk on your floor for many years, but eventually, it will end up in a landfill. Is it  made of material that will biodegrade? Check out what The New & Reclaimed Flooring Company is doing. What other companies are you discovering?

Please share this post on your social media and pledge to use fewer plastic straws each day. Remember, this is just one simple thing to do. What else can you try? Share it in the comments below.

Creating Armor

Last year, Nik Nitsvetov performed as Pietas from the Bringer of Chaos series for the Ritual of Strength. Last year was a live stream also. But before Pietas was king, he was a rookie a plebe in the Discord. Even the mightiest river has a beginning. Playing the immortal king as a rookie teenager in training ought to be fun to watch.

I've enjoyed seeing Nik create the armor Nano-Core designed for this cosplay. The final style is somewhat different because taking a brand-new design and transforming it into wearable armor is a lot of work. Nik had free reign to alter as needed to suit the cosplay. Join us and see the difference during the live stream of his newest cosplay on Saturday, November 23rd at 8:00 am Eastern.
