Origin of Pietas: Bringer of Chaos - #SciFi #SpaceOpera

You know that feeling when you think you know the whole story? You know the truth? So you make a decision and you run with it. When you careen into a wall you didn't see, you pick yourself up and take a second look at where you're headed. Or, if you're stubborn like me, you back up and run at it again. POW! Down you go one more time.

When I began writing my Tarthian Empire series books I knew who the villain was. His name was Pietas and his story was obvious. He was irredeemable, bad through and through. End of story.

About five books in, I hit a wall.

I couldn't make sense of this villain of mine. Pietas was clearly the bad guy, yet while his people feared him--with good reason--they were loyal to the death. He hated humans with such great passion that he wanted to destroy them all, yet he was taking his sweet time going about it. He could have wiped out humanity a thousand years ago.

He hadn't. Why not?

Secrets Behind the Story

I sensed a conspiracy. My characters were keeping a truth from me. How could I write a proper story if I didn't know what was going on?

After flipping through copious notes and rereading my own books, I realized I had a ton of material on Pietas. I began writing down impressions, verifying them against the canon of the books and making sure I had the real story.

The Story Iceberg

Pietas had revealed only ten percent of the story. Like an iceberg, only a small part of a story is visible. The rest comprises its true reality.

I needed to learn more.

It took me months of digging, talking with readers, talking with my beta readers and editors, inundating my critique group with multiple versions of the story's first chapters, but finally I figured out the true story.

My villain wasn't a villain.

I literally sat back in my chair and slapped my forehead. How could I have been so blind? I had allowed his actions to become my interpretation of the truth. In the story world, Pietas was playing a part. Making himself out to be the bad guy, while in reality, he was far from it.

Oh, I can hear you thinking. "You wrote the guy, Kayelle. How can he be any kind of mystery?" Well, that's because you just don't know him yet. Read one of the books about him and you'll see. He is not easy to know, but he's fascinating once you do.

After I wrote the first book about his real story, Origin of Pietas: Bringer of Chaos, a reviewer said: "He's painted as a complete psycho in other books. It's really great to get some insight into who he truly is." I had a jump-up-and-down happy-shouting fit when I read that.

I had succeeded in revealing the truth. That was what I had wanted more than anything.

As soon as I finished the first book, I jumped in on the second.

Origin of Pietas: Bringer of Chaos - #SciFi #SpaceOpera

In this scene from Bringer of Chaos, Pietas recalls a poignant interaction with his father. As young children, Pietas and Dessy suffered extreme isolation.

30 Days of Chaos: Day 23

To celebrate the launch of Bringer of Chaos: the Origin of Pietas I'm sharing 30 Days of Chaos. Each day during April, I'll post one excerpt from the book, along with a poster of a quote by Pietas. On the final day, members of my Romance Lives Forever Reader Group will receive a full color book containing all the quotes and posters. Unlike my website, the book posters will have only a quote and a beautiful image. Look for another giveaway at the end of this post.

Pietas and Dessy

Origin of Pietas: Bringer of Chaos - #SciFi #SpaceOperaLying there, sheltered, clean, warm, not thirsty, not hungry, Pietas let himself drift toward sleep.

The sudden thought that he had done nothing to find and reconnect with his family or his people jerked him awake. Guilt crashed over him in a tidal wave.

He had given his mother not one thought. He had sacrificed everything for her, and now that he was free, he hadn't considered her safety. What kind of son was he? What kind of brother? His family was on the planet, and he had ignored them.

As soon as Six came back, he'd ask him to explore. Surely, his family and the others were close. No hint of emotions had reached him, but in his depleted state, he couldn't even sense the emotions of Six, right next to him.

Perhaps all he needed was rest. Yes, that was it. Rest. With rest, he'd be fine. Back to one hundred percent. His old self. Perfect.

Pietas tried to push himself up, but his arms and body refused to cooperate. That failed, so he tried turning onto his side, but could not force any part of himself off the blanket. Helplessness made him flail mentally. He panted from exertion, as ineffective as a slug.

The shame of being incapacitated stung worse than any punishment his father had ever meted out. No battle wound had ever been so mortifying. His body had been ruined, and his abilities as well. The most powerful and gifted of all the Ultras rendered helpless. Impotent. Useless as a--

Pietas stopped himself from even thinking the word.

His father's voice came to him as if in a dream. Mahikos had been talking to Helia, referring to Pietas and Dessy. Had he thought they could not hear? Or had he not cared?

"If anyone finds them, they'll be destroyed, Helia. We'll be destroyed. They have to be hidden. Kept out of sight. You can't take them outside!"

Huddling in another room, Pietas and Dessy clung to one another. They were no more than three years old. "Don't listen, Dess. I won't let anyone hurt you." He covered his sister's ears with his hands.

In another room, their mother argued for their freedom. "Mahikos, our children need sunlight. The books say children won't grow without fresh air and sunshine. We have to risk it."

"We don't know anything about children except for those books you keep reading. They were written for human children, not Ultras."

"There are no Ultra children! Mahikos, please. They need this."

"It will endanger everything we've worked for."

"But they need it. I need it. Please, Mahikos. Let us see the sun."

"These children will be killed, and all we've fought for will be gone. They'll destroy us! We'll both be killed. These children are useless! Worthless as mortals."

How many times had Pietas spouted that same rhetoric? Useless as a child. Worthless as a mortal.

He hated and despised his father. How had he become him?

In this scene from Origin of Pietas, Six has been introduced to eight-foot tall identical twins known as Armand and Philippe, and he's curious about them.

Six Meets "The Twins"

"So what's the deal?" Six jutted his chin toward them. "Are these guys clones? Do they always finish each other's sentences?"

"Ultras are created in pairs, so technically, everyone is a twin. Few exceptions. But... Armand and Philippe were created during one of the first experiments. Back before we were called Ultras. They're the only survivors. We don't talk about it around them. When our people say 'the twins' they are usually talking about them, or about my sister and me. Remember I said two trusted guards watched our family? That was them." He started to move away, stopped himself. "And no. They don't finish each other's sentences. In fact, who speaks first is the best way to tell one from the other. Philippe finishes Armand's sentences. He never speaks first. Armand never speaks last. Each says the same amount of words. If a sentence has an uneven amount of words, Armand says the most. It's uncanny. I've never figured out how they manage it."

"What does Armand do if Philippe isn't around?"

"You will never see Armand without Philippe, or Philippe without Armand."

"Must make it hard to meet women. Or are they just interested in guys?"

"Like I said, Ultras are open about sex. In fact, I think my parents are one of the few monogamous pairings. The guys meet plenty of men and women. They might not be scientist material, but their bodies are perfect. And like everything else in their lives, they share. Fights break out over who has a chance to be with them."

"Get out." Six gave the twins a long, appraising look. "Weird."

"Among my people, Six, the twins don't even crack the door on weird."

In this scene from Bringer of Chaos, Pietas discovers a critical truth. He is plunged into an empathic rage that unleashes his emotions on the world. Everything changes. The scene below picks up after the reveal so as not to include spoilers. Pietas ventures into the night alone on Sempervia.

30 Days of Chaos: Day 30

To celebrate the launch of Bringer of Chaos: the Origin of Pietas I’m sharing 30 Days of Chaos. Each day during April, I’ll post one excerpt from the book, along with a poster of a quote by Pietas. Empathic Rage

Empathic Rage: a tragic reveal #ChaosIsComing #scifi @kayelleallen#chaos #quoteLost in thought, Pietas walked for hours. He became aware of his surroundings in the center of a clearing. Sempervian moonlight bathed the night in silver. He’d learned the secret. Now, how could he face the truth about ghosts? He’d begun to have second thoughts about humanity. Since getting to know Six, he’d considered the wholesale slaughter of humans might be wrong. That his father might have a point, and humans might be worth saving.

He’d considered resigning himself to life on Sempervia. Leaving humanity to its own devices.

How pathetic.

He would go back if it cost him every vestige of strength, and make humanity pay for what they’d done.

He would kill every last one.

Every ghost.

Every human.

All of them. Every. Single. One.

Fury activated pheromones he’d long suppressed.

He loosed them.

The moon darkened behind a cloud of insects.

A torrent of nesting birds roused and with terrified wings, beat the sky.

Pietas threw back his head, flung out his arms, and poured forth a silent howl of empathic rage.

What Luc wanted, Luc got, and what he wanted was Izzorah #SciFi #WriteLGBTQ

Out of print for nearly ten years, when Surrender Love re-released, it was with two sequels and three short stories in a series. Surrender Love is 99 cents and serves as an intro to the rest of the books.

In this scene, Luc and Izzorah have finished dinner, and retired to a living area nearby.

Luc had lived thousands of years. He was a master in the art of Sempervian Compulsion. He could seduce Izzorah and make him think it was all his idea. Izzorah already had a few drinks in him. He wouldn't even resist.

But what was the point of that? Luc wanted a relationship, not a romp. He wanted Izzorah to yield because he wanted to. No... he wanted Izzorah to be more than a partner. A true equal.

What Luc wanted, Luc got. In business, in war, in life, no one stood in the way. Not once Luc decided to pursue a thing.

But this was his precious Izzorah.

So now, Luc must wait, when what he wanted was to reach out... and take what so rightfully should belong to him.

Izzorah folded his hands before him, head down. Waiting, perhaps, for Luc to make the next move.

Luc took a step toward him, but placed himself beside Izzorah, facing the opposite direction. "You're a wonderful dinner companion."

"Thank you. I hope I didn't bore you with all that talk about home."

"Not at all. I find it...alien, but fascinating."

Izzorah said nothing.

Luc waited. A full minute passed with neither speaking.

Oh, screw this indecision! He should take the Kin to bed and be done with it. Luc knew he was going to. Why should he wait for the inevitable? No point in fighting the obvious. Izzorah wanted him. Luc wanted Izzorah. He should take him. Now.

But Luc's sensible side barred the way. He had promised. The Kin needed to know Luc respected him. Yes, Izzorah had committed himself, but it was still his move.

Luc must do the honorable thing. He shifted his weight, spreading his legs. It did nothing to ease the discomfort his arousal caused. Inner heat rivaled his craven desire for the wet friction of Kin fangs and rough tongue. Luc craved Izzorah's guileless eyes and smile, his artless desire to please. The innocence that personified him.

This young Kin could smell emotion. He had to know Luc burned. Why was he waiting? Or perhaps that was why. Had Luc frightened him with the intensity of his need? Perhaps Izzorah guessed what Luc wanted to do to him, take from him, and would run screaming in the other direction.

Instead, Izzorah took a step back and then set one foot between Luc's, looked up. "You told me when I was ready, to come to you." The emerald cat's eyes had gone wide. His smile faltered. "I'm ready. I know what I want. You."

Ring of the Dragon: Heart of the Immortal King #SciFi #MMRomance

In the book Forever Love, a situation occurs that moves Pietas and Izzorah from enemies to friends. I've been writing a new story -- nothing fully plotted yet -- and this scene presented itself.

If you've read anything with Pietas in it you know he has a wry sense of humor and irony.

Here, the two men just happen to be in the same room, and the unendingly curious Izzorah asks a question. I set this up like a play, but if I use it, I'll be adding action and dialog tags.

Izzorah: Pietas, if you were a worm, what kind of soil would you be in?

Pietas: I'm sorry. If I was a what?

Izzorah: A worm.

Pietas: A worm?

Izzorah: That's what I said.

Pietas: You think of me as a worm?

Izzorah: No, of course not.

Pietas: ...

Izzorah: But what if you were though?

Pietas: ...

Izzorah: ...
