In this scene from Bringer of Chaos, Pietas performs a vital ceremony.

30 Days of Chaos: Day 7

To celebrate the launch of Bringer of Chaos: the Origin of Pietas I’m sharing 30 Days of Chaos. Each day during April, I’ll post one excerpt from the book, along with a poster of a quote by Pietas. On the final day, members of my Romance Lives Forever Reader Group will receive a full color book containing all the quotes and posters. Unlike my website, the book posters will have only a quote and a beautiful image. Look for a giveaway at the end of this post.

Ritual

Ritual: Pietas affirms his prowess #ChaosIsComing #scifi @kayelleallen #chaos #quoteEarly on the first morning of the peace talks, Pietas entered his round bathing room. Starlight filtered through the portal overhead. Sleek silver walls reflected the cool light.

He remained at the door, content to savor its calming glow. Its beauty did not dispel the worry niggling at his mind. Not given to trusting premonitions and omens, he grounded himself with meditation. Once he centered himself and calmed his spirit, Pietas took a deep, purifying breath, and with slow deliberation, exhaled.

“Time to begin. Lights.”

The room brightened.

He shed his silk robe and let it fall at his feet. Nude, his platinum hair streaming down his back and chest, he lifted his hands, palms up as if praying.

On the planet Kaffir, warriors used this ritual to summon spirits. He used it to affirm his own superior strength and prowess.

Before a copper fire pit, he plucked one blond hair, and fed it to the fire. It singed and melted.

“As fire has victory over life, so I have victory over my enemies.”

He passed a hand through the flame, and hissed at the searing heat, relishing the pain. He cupped his hand over the flame’s source, and held it until the fire went out. The burns on his palm cooled, and as he watched, the skin healed. Of all the elements, fire alone had power to linger on an Ultra’s skin. He welcomed it as a symbol of victory.

“I am powerful, as fire is powerful.”

Pietas thrust both hands forward, clutched his fists, and yanked them back.

“I own the wind. I prevail over the breath of my enemies.”

In the bathing area, he took six steps down into a waist-deep pool.

“Water submits to my presence the way enemies submit to my will.”

He cupped water in his hands, lifted it, and let it pour down his arms.

“The blood of my enemies trickles into the pool of time, is absorbed, and forgotten.”

He pushed wet fingers through his hair, and released it.

“My mind is clear. I do not waver.”

He submersed, and rose, head thrown back, face lifted to the sparkle of stars above.

Ritual: Pietas affirms his prowess #ChaosIsComing #scifi #SFRTG @kayelleallen“My body submits to my will. No pain defeats me. No fear touches me.”

He swept his hands down his chest to his loins, and the tops of his thighs.

“My will is absolute.”

A scratching sound alerted him to the presence of his silver-skinned android servant. The creature entered, and Pietas fixed him with a hard glare. “Why did you interrupt me?”

“Your guest is here, my lord, in the living area.” He offered Pietas a towel.

“Leave it.” He waved the android away.

After exiting the pool, Pietas brushed off the water and wrung out his hair. He pulled out a tray holding half a dozen clasps. He chose a silver dragon studded with six turquoise stones, twisted his wet hair, and fastened it up, out of the way.

He dried his face, gathered a brush, and picked up a pot of black face paint. Leaning in close to a freestanding mirror, he outlined a bandit’s mask from beneath his eyes to over his dark eyebrows, and filled it with black.

He’d worn the mask in battle ever since defeating the First Division, a human special-ops group formed to fight Ultras. It came about because Pietas had slain an enemy, and blood splashed across his eyes. Thinking the blood belonged to Pietas, the Ultra troops had rallied to him and slaughtered the humans. The blood dried almost black.

Stories of how their “bandit king” had conquered the First Division filled the night. The name stuck. To his troops, he was First Conqueror, War Leader of the Ultras.

Pietas turned his head side to side, surveying the effect.

His body would reject foreign matter on his skin. The Ultra metabolism protected from every perceived attack, even harmless face paint. He closed his eyes and sprayed sealant over the mask to delay its disappearance by a few hours.

Satisfied with his looks, Pietas pulled on a pair of loose white lounging pants. With a deep, cleansing breath, he opened the door. Damp, shirtless, barefoot, he padded into the adjacent room.

What does the name Pietas mean? Those who know him will never believe it.

30 Days of Chaos: Day 2

What’s in a name?

The name is Pietas. Get it right #ChaosIsComing #scifi @kayelleallen #chaos #quoteThe name Pietas comes from Latin and has a two-part meaning. The first is conscientious, duty, dutiful conduct, and scrupulous. The second is kind, gentle, and compassionate. Those who know lord Pietas ap Lorectic believe the first definition without hesitation. But the second? Well…

Pietas is king of the Sempervians, a race of immortal beings once called Ultras. He rules with absolute authority and power. Feared everywhere, the name Pietas inspires terror among humans, and even his own people exiled him. Twice. When called an inflexible, intractable narcissist, he says “Why, thank you,” yet Pietas insists on a simple title (lord – written lower case). His uniform is immaculate, but his face is often hidden behind stray locks of platinum hair, which he cuts with a dagger. However, one thing he will not tolerate. You had better get his name right.

From chapter one, Bringer of Chaos:

Aboard the Uurahkal, a holovid screen in the council chamber replayed news from the Siege of San Xavier. In one report, a half dozen Ultra warriors crept over concrete battlements. In a voiceover, a human reporter called the subsequent slaughter of a hundred human soldiers an atrocity.

“Atrocity?” Chancellor Pietas ap Lorectic smacked his hand on the podium. Beneath the blow, the wood compressed. “Why do none of these channels show the truth?” He rubbed at the ache forming behind his eyes. “Humans killed over two hundred unarmed Ultras first. We defended ourselves. But we come back from the dead, so our suffering doesn’t matter!”

The announcer mentioned the upcoming peace talks on Enderium Six. “We hope Chancellor Pietas can be reasoned with at the talks this week.”

At her mispronunciation of his name, he gritted his teeth.

“Human families,” she continued, “have been evacuated from the station to protect them from possible violence.”

“I’ll show you violence.” Pietas cut off the video. “And my name is pronounced Pee-ah-toss, thank you. Not Pie-ah-toss. Pee-ah-toss. It’s six letters. How hard is that to get right?” He stormed away from the podium.

He cast off the heavy silk brocade of his robe of state. Silver threads flashed among teal and white as the supple garment billowed to the floor. He tore off the unadorned silver circlet denoting his rank, and tossed it onto a table. It clattered across the wood and knocked over a small ceramic statue of a six-headed dragon.

Pietas righted it. “These peace talks will end in disaster. Why can’t anyone else see it?” He massaged his temples. “This headache is proof. An Ultra doesn’t suffer pain, unless it’s due to humans.”

Immortal. Warrior. Outcasts. Traitors took everything. Except their honor.

What's a Story Molecule? Trailing Kaiwulf by Kayelle Allen #MFRWauthor #Scifi @MelissaSnarkLike me, my friend Melissa Snark likes the TV Tropes website. What are tropes? They’re devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members’ minds and expectations. On the whole, tropes are not cliches. The word cliched means “stereotyped and trite.” In other words, dull and uninteresting. The TV Tropes site isn’t about that. It’s about the creative use of these mega-themes.

The Periodic Table of Storytelling is a site that makes good use of these themes. By putting together all the basic tropes and assigning them a range of colors and letters, it’s possible to create a “story molecule” using the themes of the story.

What's a Story Molecule? Trailing Kaiwulf by Kayelle Allen #MFRWauthor #ScifiMelissa had an idea. Why not take the TV Tropes website and figure out how to apply its amazing concepts to her own story? She hit upon an even better idea. Why not invite other authors to do the same thing? Adding icing to the cake, she contacted the TV Tropes site and asked if they’d like to take a look. They did, she did, and a group of us got together to share the idea of creating a story molecule.

Mine is the last one in the series, so I’m doing my best to make it awesome. I hope you’ll check it out. The book I’m featuring is Trailing Kaiwulf. Why not head over there and take a look? It’s amazing what she put together. Click here: http://is.gd/kaiwulf_molecule

"Does that mean you want me?" #Excerpt At the Mercy of Her Pleasure #MFRWhooks #Romance

In this scene, Senth and NarrAy have just met. She's considering whether to hire him to help her steal back the designs for a prototype her murdered parents designed. Because she's a Better, an enhanced human with addictive pheromones, she's not permitted to touch anyone skin-to-skin. Senth puts on gloves and prepares to shake her hand. All her life, she has been isolated from touch, so this moment is important to her.

Excerpt At the Mercy of Her Pleasure

NarrAy offered her hand. She'd practiced this with her father as a girl. "A gentleman doesn't try to overpower a lady's hand, NarrAy. But he isn't afraid to be firm either."

She held his gloved hand between both of hers. "I can see you're a gentleman, Mr. Antonello."

His cheeks reddened. "Just Senth, ma'am."

She squeezed Senth's hand. "And I'm NarrAy. Never Ms. Jorlan, nor ma'am. Not on this job. Understood?"

He met her gaze. "Does that mean you want me?" He blushed again and glanced down at their still-joined hands. "For the job, I mean."

She bit back a laugh. What an innocent. "So long as we're clear on who's in charge."

"When it comes to theft, I am. For everything else, you are, in every way."

He had no idea. But, he had never once looked at her body. Maybe this red dress would be okay after all.

"Come sit." She gestured toward an adjacent room. "Let's talk business."

Ever have one of those chats starts out confrontational but ends up in a good place? Share a sweet but awkward father and son moment with Luc and Senth. Bro comes chonologically after A Stolen Heart, but Bro is the book that inspired A Stolen Heart. I wanted to know why Luc decided to adopt a three-year-old. Heart is free. A link to the book is below.

#Excerpt from Bro: a sweet yet awkward father and son moment #MFRWhooks #MFRWauthor #SciFi

"Is that the info?" Senthys nudged his chin toward the reader. "What else does it say?"

"In good time," Luc responded. "I adopted you but didn't change your last name to Saint-Cyr so if your family looked for you, they'd find you, and that's how it happened. A worker at the Guild mentioned to this person that he knew another Antonello. One thing led to another."

"That's why you kept my name?"

"Of course." Luc frowned. "Why else?"

"I thought--" Senthys eased back into his chair. "Never mind."

"Say what you're thinking."

His son didn't react at first, but finally lifted his head. "I figured... you were--you know." He gave a small shrug. "Ashamed of me."

"What? No! I am inordinately proud of you." Why did his son not see that? "Why would you think I wasn't?"

The youth traced a pattern in the wood. "I figured if you were proud, you'd have wanted to tell people about me." He peeked up under his lashes. "Instead of making me hide."

His son could not have cut out Luc's heart any better with a knife.

"No! That was never why. Son." He reached for Senthys but placed his hand flat on the table. "I promise you." He held his son's gaze, willing him to understand. "I am indeed proud of you. I hide you to protect you."

"You're my father. It's public record. You own the house where I live. You sponsored me into the Guild. I don't see how that's hiding."

Luc sagged in his chair. "Do you have any idea how much it costs to buy off the media? There are almost two dozen planets in this empire. The media exacts a heavy toll on silence when--" He stopped himself. Lowered his voice. "You don't need to know the deals I make and you don't need to make it more difficult--or expensive--for me to protect you from the fame that dogs my every step. A thief can't work in a spotlight." He drew back. "Most of the time, neither can I."

"What you're saying is--you've been protecting me?"

How many times had he said that exact thing? Did this child never listen? With yet another reminder to pick his battles, Luc tamped down his frustration. "Yes."

The adorable blue eyes and shy smile that had charmed Luc when Senthys was a toddler flashed across his son's face and then was gone.

No sweet little kitten remained a kitten forever. No matter how much you wished they could.

Crystal Clear Truth - a slow-burn, forced proximity SciFi alien romance set in the far future, in an empire full of treachery and secrets #Romance #SciFi

In this scene, Shohn and Joe have just met, and she's brought him to her home for protection. She has programmed her synther to make dinner. A synther makes food - think microwave crossed with a personal android chef.

Joe took a long sniff. "That is starting to smell good."

"It's a dish with those skinny Tyran noodles, little chunks of beef, and a thick brown sauce. I forget what they call it. I just press twenty-seven on my list of menus. I eat it a couple times a week. It's quick and it fills you up." The synther dinged and shut off. "And it's hot. Let's eat."

Shohn set out ready-made salads and offered Joe a fork, and they sat on the couch. Sitting with bare feet tucked under herself, she dug into the noodles.

Joe groaned. "Oh my stars. I have to tell Nim about this. It's delicious."

"He's the one who got me started on this stuff."

Joe squinted. "Oh yeah, I forgot you knew him. He's been my rock ever since my parents died." He poked through the noodles, piercing vegetables. "He'd be so disappointed in me tonight, though."

"Why?"

He finished chewing before he spoke. "There's a party at the hotel. He insisted I had to make an appearance. I would so much rather be here." He took another bite.

"I hate when I have to be at some party or function for a new client and I don't know anybody."

"Or you know just one person, so you end up being their shadow the whole night."

She stabbed the salad. "I think the only reason I have friends is because they're all extroverts who adopted me and made me go places with them."

"Same. I wouldn't have met Nim if he hadn't introduced himself and literally invited himself over." He stuck his fork into a small tomato. "Although he always gives me grief about my 'fast food archives.' After I eat something, I tend to set the tray on the table instead of recycling it."

"So we're clear. Leave anything that needs tossing on my table or counters, and you'll find out why I'm so heavily armed."

He swallowed. "Is... Was that a joke?"

Shohn speared a bit of salad. "Do you really want to find out?"

Fork in hand, he snapped her a salute. "No, ma'am."

She gave him a knowing nod. "Wise decision."

A bit later, when they'd finished eating, Joe insisted that Shohn relax while he cleared their trays.

"See?" he called from the kitchen area. "I'm recycling." He raised his hands. "Please don't shoot."

Laying back both ears, she extended the claw on her pinky finger. "You know what this gesture means?"

"Um...no. Should I worry?"

"It means, 'I could beat you with my smallest claw' so watch your step, human boy."

He laughed, but he did so while bowing to her. "I live to please, my Kin lady."

Joe could please her indeed.
