In this scene, Izzorah has had a short session with Nanchonta, a friend of Luc's and a doctor. Unknown to Izzorah, Chon is also immortal and has the gift of healing. Chon has focused on vision so far, which Izzorah doesn't want to admit is extremely poor to Luc.
When Izzorah gets in the shower, Luc enters, and for the first time, Izzy can see him at a distance.
Izzorah blinked twice, rubbed his eyes and blinked again. He could see as clearly as if he were next to the sink. Unwilling to miss anything, he studied the room.
"Rah, you're scaring me."
He could see everything. He met Luc's gaze and started laughing, struck by the irony of his situation. His heart was ready to give out and his eyes started working. How screwed up was that?
Nanchonta had sworn to keep his blindness a secret but had insisted on examining his eyes. Izzorah had spent so long looking into the man's eyes he'd gotten lost in their pale depths. Had Nanchonta done this? How long would it last? Giggles bubbled out of Izzorah and he clapped a hand over his mouth.
"Oh, Rah, you're freezing. Let's get you back into the water."
Izzorah let Luc maneuver him into the shower and kept laughing until tears ran down his cheeks.
Luc turned on other controls and soothing, warm water sprayed from three sides of the shower stall, putting them in the middle of a mist. The water sparkled in the air, catching the light and making arcs of color.
"Oh!" Water beaded on Izzorah's hands, glistened on his golden skin. It shone on Luc's dark skin like diamonds and Izzorah spread his hands across the man's chest. "Beautiful. So many colors."
"Did Nanchonta drug you?" Luc captured Izzorah's face and squinted at him. Even in the midst of so much water, Luc's worry-scent flooded the chamber.
"I'm fine. I... So many colors in the mist. Is this what rainbows look like?"
The water cut off. Luc pushed the door open. "Come on. Let's get you into bed."
"But--" Izzorah let Luc sweep him along. "It's pretty. I see rainbows."
"I'll kill Nanchonta. I told him no drugs!" Luc toweled Izzorah down, wrapped him in a bath sheet, grabbed one for himself and led him to the bed. He pulled down the covers. "Get in."
Izzorah slid into the bed, reached up and probed the skin on Luc's arm. "You're so many colors. You're darker here, on your elbow. And light up here." He skimmed his fingers across Luc's shoulder.
Luc fumbled with a device on the nightstand. "McDoth! Get hold of Nanchonta and get him back here on the double! And hurry!"
Izzorah gripped his arm. "Stay with me, Luc."
"I'm not leaving you for a second." Luc swore in the Kin language, then switched to vaguely Tyran-sounding words and then a language Izzorah hadn't heard before.
"Yes?" Luc drew Izzorah's hand up to his mouth and kissed his palm.
"Are you making up cuss words? I haven't heard any of the words you're saying before, but I can tell you're mad."
Luc laid Izzorah's hand against his own cheek and kissed the palm. Tears sparkled on his lashes. "I'm worried about you. Did Nanchonta give you drugs?"
"No, he laid his hands on my shoulders and chest. The way he did Soli. It was amazing. I wish you'd been there. Nanchonta picked Soli up and held him, little head in his palm and his body along one arm. They stared at one another for a long time. Soli didn't cry even once. It was like he knew we were there to help him. After a bit, Soli closed his eyes and went to sleep and when we held him, he felt normal. No fever. Nanchonta gave them some drops and said Soli'd be fine in a day or two. He's magic, Luc. He made it--"
The door burst open and Nanchonta charged into the room. "What's wrong?"
