Chaos is Coming - for sure. Pietas is almost ready to go live.

When I asked Nik to cosplay Pietas, he not only agreed, he offered to make the costume and weapons. I paid for the materials, but it was all his skill that went into making it. Check out the shoes! He made these by hand so they'd fit the uniform.

Chaos is Coming - Sci Fi Cosplay

Pietas, from the Bringer of Chaos series - as close to live as a character can get - at a cosplay live on Instagram the weekend of Nov 22/23. I'm calling it the Chaos is Coming Sci Fi Cosplay.

Nik Nitsvetov has finished the costume and weapons.  His work with foam, glue, and paint is nothing short of magic. Wait till you see the final costume! I'll be sharing pictures over the weeks leading up to the cosplay.

Nik lives in Russia, 7 hours ahead of us, so when it's 4pm here, it's 11pm there. Best way to know the time? Try Time.is I've linked this to show Moscow time, which where Nik will do the new Chaos cosplay.

A word about the uniform -- that banner showing the combat uniform was the prototype for Nik to use as a launchpad. I commissioned the uniform from Nano-Core, who also designed the weapons. Everything about this cosplay will be one of a kind, including the character.

Babs Hightower of BabsBookBistro was an awesome personal assistant. She did a prodigious amount of work for me. She even took care of things for me over a long holiday weekend because I hadn’t had a break in literal years. When she died, it stunned me. She’d seemed healthy, energetic, eager to help, like always. But she was there one day and gone the next. Other authors she supported are also reeling.

Honoring Babs

Honoring Babs, an awesome Personal Assistant #PA #VA #GoFundMeIf we’re hurting, I can’t imagine how her family must feel. Her husband, Tommy, is a truck driver. There’s no way he can be gone that long now, so he’s looking for different work. Babs and Tommy had 3 kids at home, two of them special needs. She had a bazillion Huskies that she took care of. I’m not sure even she knew how many. She just fed and loved them and gave them baths and… OMG. Huskies. Gotta love ’em. In this picture, her husband’s shirt says “Hair on this shirt provided by my Siberian Husky.” How much you want to bet, Babs bought that shirt. That was her sense of humor.

Authors Keta Diablo, Amber Marr, Rue Allyn, and Marian Lanouette were also supported by this awesome lady. I’m not sure who  else she took care of. She was a combination mom, big sister, and no-nonsense boss. “Get to writing” she’d tell me. How I miss that!

Keta and Amber and I put together a Go Fund Me to help the family as Tommy adjusts to being Babs-less. The mom and grandmom (to a brand new grandbaby) is missed everywhere. We’d like to do whatever we can to help them. Babs would have moved heaven and earth to help us. Our very sincere thanks to Crystal at Reviews by Crystal for helping us set this up. When she heard we wanted to help Babs, she offered to do whatever we needed.

Will you give us a hand too? I know her family would be super grateful for anything you can do. Will you share this as another way to help?

Panthers like belly rubs #SciFi #SpaceOpera #MFRWhooks

Belly Rubs?

In this scene, Pietas is getting to know Tiklaus, a massive black panther.
The animal has appointed itself guardian over the immortal king.
Who knew panthers liked belly rubs?

Flipping onto its back, belly exposed, Tiklaus huffed twice.

"You want a belly rub." Laughing, he rubbed with one hand and stroked with the other.

Tiklaus lolled on its back, legs spread wide, the position trusting and submissive. The big cat sneezed and then rocked to its feet, shaking its head. Claws retracted, the panther batted at him, knocked Pietas onto his back and then flipped itself down beside him. Tiklaus wrapped its front legs around his arm and gnawed at it in gentle play while the hind feet kicked him without injury. Claws flashed, but did no harm.

Now I know how a chew toy feels. He blew out a breath.

When the panther draped itself over his chest, Pietas struggled to slide out from under but could not get up. The animal weighed less than he did, but with no visible effort, it kept Pietas from rising.

"I concede, my friend. You win."

The panther ignored him.

"Tiklaus, off."

Nothing.

"Off, please."

The panther yawned, opening a huge maw. Fangs flashed.

Pietas tried a signal that worked with sparring partners and asked for release by double-tapping the panther's side.

The cat stood at once and stepped over him. It shook from nose to tail, then sat and groomed itself.

He stood and brushed himself off. Standing beside Tiklaus, who reached him mid-thigh, Pietas took pride in knowing this sweet, playful cat was also the snarling ball of animal rage that had nailed his father to the ground. Mahikos had not seen it coming.

He should have let the cat eat him when he had the chance.

Pietas ensured no one was on the path in either direction before he knelt and scratched the cat's ears. "Who's a good kitty?"

The animal sneaked in a lick of his hand and face and flopped down on its back.

"My Tiklaus, that's who. Tiklaus is a good kitty." He rubbed the smooth belly. "Yes, you are! Such a good, big kitty. You're my kitty, aren't you? Good, good kitty."

The panther accepted the attention, one paw twitching. After a moment, it stood and shook itself. A purring sound rumbled from its chest. It sat, licked one paw and added a lick of Pietas's face as well.

He chuckled. "Thank you for the bath." He hugged the panther's neck. "You have as soft a heart as I do but you don't show it either. Pact, my friend. I won't tell if you won't." He kissed Tiklaus on the nose.

The panther bumped its head against Pietas, then bounded to a tree and up it.

Six and Pietas Perform the Ritual of Strength #SciFi #SpaceOpera #MFRWhooks

In this scene, Pietas performs a ritual with the help of his friend, Six.

A member of Ghost Corps, Six is a fearsome fighter with the strength to kill immortals like Pietas.

Ironically, the two have become intimate friends.

But that doesn't mean Six puts up with arguments, especially when he knows he's right.

Six and Pietas "pretend" the Ritual of Strength

"We should have cut your hair before we set out." Six rummaged through his kit, which held all his belongings when he'd been abandoned on this world. Little more than survival gear.

Pietas tossed back his hair. "I never cut it except in ritual."

"I know." Six withdrew a boning knife used for it. Before every battle, Pietas performed the solemn rite to affirm superior strength and prowess. Six had been the first human to see it carried out, albeit the first half from a distance while hiding. He stood. "Maybe you could perform it now."

"How like you to see the easy solution. But there are a few elements missing. No fire. No water. No mask." He gestured toward the oncoming storm. "No time."

"Haven't you ever heard of pretending?"

"One cannot 'pretend' a ritual."

"What a boring childhood you must've had. Why not?"

Pietas opened his mouth to answer. Shut it again.

Six lifted one eyebrow. "Do you want to go into that dark hole and meet up with your people without performing it?"

"No, but there's no time."

"Rain's coming." Six jerked a thumb toward the forest. "Like I said, you have to go in there or you won't reunite with your people. Are you going to stand out here making excuses, or do this?"

"Ghost, this ritual is important. It deserves respect."

"Blah, blah, blah. That storm is bearing down on us." A few drops of rain splattered them both. "See? Or maybe you'd rather have your sister help you with your hair every morning."

"Fine!" With a resigned sigh, Pietas capitulated. "How do you propose we 'pretend' my ritual?"

Six tucked the knife into his belt and held out his cupped hands. "This is fire."

Pietas hesitated.

"Come on, Pi." Six wagged his cupped hands. "This stuff is hot."

"Of course it is." A smile slipped onto his face and refused to leave. "It's pretend fire. That's the hottest kind."

In this two-part discussion on time travel, I’ll share a fascinating discussion in my reader group. I love science fiction and fantasy, space opera, whether film, TV, book, or magazine. Likewise, time travel has always fascinated me. But is it sci fi or historical? I decided to ask my readers. Here is the winning response, from Jackie. We had a great discussion.

QUESTION: Is a time travel in which characters travel to the future a Sci Fi? Would one in which they traveled to the past be historical?

Time Travel (part 2): Sci Fi or Historical? #SciFi #Historical #Book

I offered a $10 gift certificate to Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or Amazon (winner’s choice) for the best answer. One of my readers is author Dariel Raye, who in turn asked some of her readers. I got responses from both groups. (read part 1 of this discussion)

Jackie:

Your description of sci/fi and historical time travel seems right. Also if its not too far into the future or past then I suppose it would just be plain old time travel. I guess one would have to know how long ago historical really is, and how far into the future is really sci/fi. Interesting time line question to think about.

Kayelle:

Hadn’t considered that. So maybe there could even be levels of historical or futuristic. Maybe ancient history or far future? I like that!

Jackie:

Yeah I think there would have to be different levels. Not as simple as 1 2 3 or A B C. Maybe more like middle ages or maybe even just a simple as a year like 1800’s historical. Now future we would have to come up with different era names.

Kayelle:

Any in mind? What would you call them?

Jackie:

I am not sure what I would call them. Maybe something involving destiny, or future generations, or the coming of? What do you think?

Kayelle:

Well now that’s different. A time travel to the future wouldn’t affect the past, until you were in the future — and then your actions would be in the past. So the new future’s past would definitely be altered. Kind of makes your head spin, doesn’t it? ;)

Jackie:

LOL yes it does. I actually read what you wrote twice. I am reading a series now that has time travel involved, both past, present and future. So many things change and sometimes one doesn’t realize when you change one thing it can bring about a much different out come than you expected or wanted.

Kayelle:

I love the idea of time travel. Time is moving, but so is space — the Earth will never again be physically in the same place it was when we leave a specific time. Which means if we tried to go back in time, we would also have to go back in space. So not only would time travel be traveling within time, but also everything time affects. Wear, distance, surroundings… how could we ever create something complex enough to take all that into consideration?

Which just fascinates me. I don’t think I’ve come across time travel that deals with that aspect. What about the series you’re reading now? What is it?

Jackie:

Wow I had not thought about that. The series I am reading did take some of those thoughts into consideration. Not only did circumstances change but so did the surroundings and also the people. They looked very different as well. I am reading a YA book series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Its called the chronicles of Nick. Very cool with a dark humor to it. It was fun picking each others brains and trying to come up with a creative idea.
