In this scene from Forged in Fire, Pietas and the search party sent to find him have stopped their upward mountain trek for a short break. Prior to their reunion the previous day, Pietas had spent a year in confinement, hands bound behind him. He'd been starved to the point of death, but because he's immortal, he could not die. Although he's healed since, the brutality left a lasting toll on his once robust physical body. As they prepare to get underway, he unwittingly reveals the impairment and becomes the focus of unwanted attention from a telepath.
Wincing, Pietas stretched to ease cramps in his back.
"Tas!" His sister had started using her childhood name for him since they'd reconnected the day before. "Are you hurt?"
Before he could answer Dessy, a quick telepathic scan from Joss swept over him. Pietas had still been a teenager when she'd trained him to shield his mind from those with her gift. Not that he'd ever been able to block her. She was far too powerful, but today, she'd read him with no more difficulty than a hunter spying trail signs. He'd been near no Ultra telepaths for over a year.
His affinity with Six had made him careless and he'd neglected the basic lessons Joss had taught him.
It wasn't a lack of trust. Trust had never been an issue with Joss.
He treasured her, but he ought not to have been so unguarded and open. Vulnerable.
"Pietas." Joss stood. The waves of emotion he picked up from her held love and concern in equal measure. And a bit of disappointment. "You're injured."
He ducked his head like a schoolboy who'd forgotten his lessons. Admit mortals had damaged him? Never. Neither would he lie about it. He'd take better care to hide the pain.
"Don't worry about me." Whistling, he circled a finger in the air. "Let's go! Long climb ahead. Joss, you lead." Last thing he wanted was her behind him, using him as an object of focus. He loved her, but this was unwanted attention.
What telepaths focused upon, they controlled.

In this scene, Luc had rescued a little girl who'd been kidnapped. Only afterward did he discover that her going missing was part of a grand scheme for Pietas to control her scientist-parents. When Pietas shows up unannounced and acts as if nothing happened, Luc confronts him about the kidnapping. Pietas denies it.
With Pietas, the truth was often in what wasn't said as much as what was. "Then you hired some lackey to do it."
"A king has no need for lackeys." Pietas drew back a lock of silver hair and flipped it behind his shoulder. "I command soldiers. Or if needed, I ask a favor. Like I did you."
"You asked someone to kidnap this child for you, then you put her into the Guild and asked me to find her."
"I told you. I did not kidnap her."
"If you asked someone to do it, it's kidnapping!" He snapped the wineglass stem, stabbing his hand. He dropped the pieces and pressed a thumb against the cut. The blood staunched. The cut healed within seconds. "Don't skirt the truth. You thrust that child into danger to get what you wanted."
"Spare me the theatrics." Pietas flipped a hand. "The girl wasn't harmed."
"The Guild told her that her parents were dead. They isolated her! She's a Better. Are you aware what the Guild does to non-humans?"
"Betters are human."
"Not to the Guild."
"They are human." Pietas turned his back. "I should know. I designed them. Genetic manipulation is my role in this lifetime."
"As I said, not to the Guild. I rescued a HalfKin child today. They'd been locking him in a windowless room in the dark as punishment. They fed him from a bowl on the floor. He's three. Was that harmless?"
"That's barbaric." Pietas grimaced. "Why would the Guild do that?"
"Because he isn't human. Imagine what they'd do if they discovered what I am."

Wouldn't it be great if there was a way to embed Instagram posts on your WordPress website? There is!
I found a great hack for Instagram while searching tips and tricks. I'm always open to learning new and better ways to do things. When I saw this, I knew I had to share it with you. I use Instagram for fun, and occasionally, I share something I'm working on. That's what the post at the left is all about. I was working on banners for my new book, A Stolen Heart, and thought I'd show one to my followers.
The post I'm showing here features Pietas, who was cosplayed by Nik Nitsvetov live on Instagram.
My curiosity about how to embed Instagram posts on a blog turned up a super easy way to do it.
This is such an easy way to extend your reach with Instagram that I'm surprised more people don't do it. I found this hack on the website of the awesome Kim Garst. Be sure to check out her post "20 Instagram tricks that you probably don't know." It was fabulous. I followed Kim's instructions and it worked great. Here's how to do it yourself.
1. Go to the Instagram post you want to embed.
2. Look for 3 dots -- that's a mini-menu you can access. Click it.
3. In the drop down menu, click "Embed." Here, you have a choice whether to include the caption. For the example above, I did. The code will be super long, but Instagram lets you copy the code with one click, which makes it really easy.
4. Go to the WordPress blog post where you want to show this image.
5. Look for the tab at the top of the post window that says "text" and click it.
6. Paste the code.
That's it. Go back to visual, and you'll see the Instagram post on your blog. How cool is that?
I've been thinking about recording myself working on banners and then sharing the video here and on Instagram. What do you think? Would you be interested in seeing that? This scene takes place after Joe was rescued by Shohn and taken to her home for safekeeping. He'd awakened to find an intruder in his hotel room. Shohn received an alert and decided he needed a safer place. After all, this man holds the possible key to two conflicting missions that Shohn must deal with. This part is right after she settled him in and then left the room.
Hands behind his head, Joe lay on the bed. He couldn't sleep if he tried, so he hadn't bothered pulling down the sheets. Faint light from around the door cast a bit of light on the ceiling. Before long, that went out, and he found himself in darkness.
He pulled out his mobile and brought up Imperinet. "Search people," he told the device. "Basic background on Kin Shohn Lexius."
The unit made an answering ping. "Full name Lexius, Shohnahki, born 4624 on Felidae, Lexius Township, age forty-four years. Employed by idBot 4645. Volunteer at Kin Kids Healthcare. Do you require current address?"
"Think I've got that pretty well covered. What's her position at idBot?"
"Ms. Lexius is the Senior Liaison on the Lucsondis security team."
"What is Lucsondis?"
"Lucsondis is an umbrella company owned by Luc Saint-Cyr."
"Saint-Cyr?" Joe rubbed the tight spot between his eyes. Wasn't that just great? "Is there a civilian world equivalent of her position?"
"Comparative titles include Senior Vice President of Security, Senior Vice President of Security and Transport Division, Executive Director of--"
"Okay. I get it. She's powerful and she works for Saint-Cyr." Hadn't his father often lamented not being able to seek research grants outside the TCF? Saint-Cyr's interests in firestorms was a matter of public record. More specifically, in the crystals created during firestorms. "Okay, idBot. Is Ms. Lexius married or dating anyone?" He gritted his teeth, waiting for the answer.
"According to Idle Time Ezine, Ms. Lexius is not and has never been married. She is listed as number seven on a list of the ten 'Most Sought After Businesswomen of Tarth City.'"
And why did that give him such a feeling of satisfaction? Joe set aside his mobile.
So she worked for Saint-Cyr. What would it take to get Shohn to set up a meeting with the man? And if she did, what would it take to keep the TCF from firing him on the spot?
She might be helping him at Saint-Cyr's behest, or because of the research of Joe's father. Maybe even his own. After all, why would an executive that high up in the company take on a missing person case like his? And then bring him right into her own home?
What were her ulterior motives? Was she planning corporate espionage on Saint-Cyr's behalf? But how would she have known Joe would end up in a vulnerable position, the victim of a break-in?
Unless she set it up in order to gain access to him. Or had herself been the one in that room.
No. He'd felt the vibes. Definitely male.
If she was spying on him, why did she have to be so damned attractive?
Joe swallowed. He'd been right. He wouldn't sleep for a week.

Luc, a former space pirate who's gone straight, rescues a vulnerable child adept at breaking into things. Nothing is beyond the boy's reach. He's even stolen Luc's heart...
In this scene, Luc is carrying three-year-old Senth and meets Nikko, his Deshai (apprentice) in the hall.
Earlier, one of the other Deshais had brought a policewoman to the house, and idBot (the security company Luc owns) discovered she'd left behind trackules - a type of spyware. Luc needs to go out to deal with a related issue.
Outside Luc's bedroom door, he met Nikko as the young man came up the stairs. A glance told Luc what he needed to know; idBot had informed everyone.
Senthys squirmed, so Luc set the boy down.
"Nikko?" The boy tapped his brother on the leg. "Can you take care of me? Please?"
"What? You know it. I'll always take care of you, Senth." He turned back to Luc. "I'm sorry I doubted you. Why would Orella do that?"
Luc locked his door. "There's no proof she did it on purpose."
"I don't get it." The young Deshai looked at him askance. "First you accuse her, and now you defend her?"
"Nikko?" Senthys tugged on the young man's hand. "Will you play with me and my bears? Please?"
"Not yet, Senth."
The boy sulked. "But I said please. Ms. Fasra says when someone says please then you are supposed to do it."
"Yes, you did, and she's right." Nikko squatted. "But adults can't always stop what they're doing and play. Even if they want to. Sometimes we have to do adult things first."
An unfortunate truth. Like hunting monsters when you'd prefer rocking a sweet little boy to sleep and putting him into bed where he was safe. Luc slid one hand into a pocket.
Senthys pouted. "But I don't want to adult."
"I don't either sometimes. Neither does Luc." Nikko flashed a smile up at him. "Right?"
"Exactly right."
"Then play with me."
"In a few minutes." Nikko stood.
The boy gave an exaggerated sigh. "Okay."
"Um..." Nikko hesitated. "What were we talking about?"
"Orella and trackules. I never accused her. I said I suspected there might be spyware. Shohn Lexius at idBot thinks she might have been dusted with trackules without her knowledge, and I agree. I doubt Orella would jeopardize her relationship with Kaydn."
"Okay, I can see that. But how could she be dusted and not know?"
"I plan to investigate, that, Nikko. I hope she didn't do it herself. Now, I'm going to need help with something important. Who else is home?"
"I'm here," Brinn called out, coming up the stairs. He stepped out onto the second floor.
Holding his bears, Senthys ran over to him. "Will you take care of me, please?"
"Take care of you?" Brinn gave Luc and Nikko a questioning look. "You know it, little brother."
"Can we play?"
"Sure. In a few minutes. I have to talk to Luc first."
"Okay." Senthys heaved a drawn-out groan. "I know. You have to adult."

In this scene, when Luc is asked to find a missing child, he's sure he's misunderstood something. After all, this is the master of misdirection he's talking to: Pietas, who wants him to find a kid? Sure he does. Meanwhile, the king has brought out his panther and is petting the animal. It's far from tame, but Luc is quite familiar with it.

"Locate the girl." Pietas stroked the panther. "Once you tell me where she is, you'll be free. I don't need you to rescue her. Just inform me."
"I see." Luc did not. "Find this ten year-old girl. Tell you where she is. That's it."
"Yes. Then after your Deshai graduates, you can move to Tarth and start that building you've been planning."
"Hmm." This was far too easy. Obviously, he'd missed something. Mentally, Luc walked back through the last bits of conversation. "To clarify, you don't want me to bring her to you. You want me to find her and tell you where she is."
"Asked and answered." Pietas studied him. "Why is this so hard for you? Find her. Tell me. Not difficult. But it is urgent."
"What's so important about her?"
Pietas kissed the panther on the nose. "It's not her so much as her parents. If we find her and then take her to them, we'll have more influence."
Now they were getting somewhere. "And who are they?"
"My sister told you about the FTA, didn't she?"
"FTA." Acronyms filled his world, but this one? New to him. Why did that earlier dread raise its ugly head again? He'd probably be better off not knowing, but Pietas seemed to be waiting for an answer. "Not a word. What is it?"
"She didn't?" Pietas frowned. "Oh, I thought... Never mind." He tugged the panther's ears. "The FTA is the Forgotten Technologies Arena."
"Forgotten by whom?"
"The ancients. It's secret tech. Forbidden."
"Forbidden." The headache he'd faced over the last hour spiked through his brain. He rubbed his temples. Why him? Why now? "Pietas..."
"Oh, will you stop worrying?" The man looked over at him. "No one's going to get sucked into a wormhole this time."
Luc forced himself to take a deep breath and let it all the way out. "That's what you said the last time."
