In Origin of Pietas, exile changes everything #SpaceOpera #MFRWhooks

Origin of Pietas: Bringer of Chaos - #SciFi #SpaceOpera #PietasFans

When power can compel obedience, control is not the same as loyalty.
Control cannot create trust.

For most of his life—pre-exile—Pietas never had to think about the difference.

Born into authority. Raised to command. Surrounded by systems designed to enforce loyalty and maintain order. The structures of empire made power seem permanent.

Until exile stripped them away.

Exile

Origin of Pietas: Bringer of Chaos #SciFi #SpaceOpera #PietasFansFar from the institutions that once supported him, Pietas discovers an uncomfortable truth: authority means very little when no one is required to obey.

On this world, power offers no protection.
Survival depends on trust.
And trust becomes dangerous when the only person willing to stand beside you is the enemy.

Lights Out is the prequel to this series, and its concept is “Humor survives.”

Origin of Pietas covers “Survival binds you to the record.” You are not forgotten. You are still here.

The first is about how people cope.

The second is about relationship.

Which is exactly how readers travel deeper into the series.
Discovering the people.
Understanding the relationships.

Read an excerpt from Origin of Pietas, where exile changes everything, control stops working, and brotherhood becomes a choice.

The infernal, cheerful whistling began again. Pietas tried in vain to escape the sound. Shackled at the ankles, hands bound behind him, he remained flat on his back. There were no comfort choices inside his pod.

No. Not his pod. He would never claim such a place.

The prison pod. The nightmare pod. A casket for the living.

Would that whistling never end?

Whoever guarded him whistled, night and day. He must have lips made of steel. How a human kept that up day after day was beyond him. Or perhaps... Did an Ultra guard him? Had one of his people come to free him?

Pietas opened his mouth to call out but then clamped it shut.

If it were one of his people, he needed to wait for them to act. They would do so when the time was right. For now, he suffered bouts of agony as feeling returned to his hands and then left in repeating cycles. His metabolism healed him, but brought pain. He focused on that, accepted the pain, welcomed it, examined every step of its journey through his body. What one understood, one could bear.

An Ultra does not seek to escape pain. If one inflicts pain, one must bear it. Pain must be borne. Pain is a warrior’s ally.

He hovered in a nightmare-filled, windowless, endless monotony of thirst and hunger.

Punctuated with unending lilts of bouncy, alert, happy, chipper whistling.

At first, he’d welcomed the sound. The rising and falling notes broke the tedium of everlasting darkness. It stopped for brief periods, but began again soon after.

He’d considered calling out and asking them to stop. He had gone so far as to open his mouth. But asking implied weakness. He acknowledged no tool of torture.

Beg mercy from humans? Never.

This was not stasis. Stasis meant cessation of thought. Of emotion. A dreamless kind of sleep. The end of awareness. A not-time.

They’d frozen his people in these pods, but they’d imprisoned him.

Or perhaps his blood ran so hot, no human force could freeze him.

The tune changed.

For the love of all that’s holy, will you shut up!

Blessed silence fell. But then light blared in his face like a blast of horns.

What fresh perdition was this? They’d tortured him with darkness. Now they’d torture him with light?

Pietas tried to force his eyes open, to face the torture, but after so long in darkness, the light stabbed his eyes. He twisted his head to avoid it.

“You’re awake?” The startled voice hovered close, muffled by the pod. “Security! Security! Prisoner Six-Six-Six is out of stasis! I say again, Prisoner Six-Six-Six is out of stasis!”

The alarm in the male voice gave Pietas a measure of pride. Even imprisoned, he engendered fear. They had taken away his name and given him a number that among humans meant a demonic beast.

Let the legend of Pietas, by name or by number, bring fear straight into the heart of man. No... let it bring terror.

The alarmed voice led him to another thought. Had they not known he was awake? No. These vile creatures had readouts of every type. How could one mistake his beating heart and steady breath for anything other than wakefulness and life? They meant to keep him aware and suffering. They knew.

But whoever was guarding him hadn’t. Pietas might hate humans, but he knew the difference between genuine alarm and fake fear. He’d been instigating the real thing for centuries.

Interesting. He could use that.

His eyes adjusted to the light, and he focused on the face hovering over the small window above him.

Was that...Ghost Six?

The light cut off, taking with it the familiar comfort of sight. Pietas bit the inside of his cheek to keep silent.

First Conqueror, War Leader of the Ultras, did not beg.

He did not. He did not.

The long silence felt like days but must have been hours. He’d begun to think he’d imagined the entire thing when a hard clank-thud-thud sounded through the walls of the pod.

The unit jarred and shook, digging the shackles beneath him into his wrists. A deep, percussive set of smaller thumps hit next. The tap of many hammers or the closing of small successive doors. The death rattle of a dragon.

Had the ship arrived on Sempervia? Would this ceaseless nightmare end? He listened, intent on understanding, identifying. When he recognized the sound, it extinguished his one tiny flicker of hope.

The prison-pod that already held him immobile was being wrapped in chains.

Bringer of Chaos Series – Sci-Fi & Space Opera #SciFi #SpaceOpera #PietasFans

In the Bringer of Chaos series, coming back from death changes people. Because survival isn't salvation. It binds you to the record.

Most stories treat survival as a victory. The danger passes. The hero lives. The future waits.

But survival leaves marks.

Every loss becomes part of the story. Every choice carries forward. Every second chance comes with consequences.

In the Bringer of Chaos universe, resurrection is not a reset button. It is a continuation. The dead do not return unchanged, and those who survive must live with what came before.

For Pietas, survival is not freedom.
It is memory.
It is accountability.

It is the realization that some debts do not disappear simply because you outlive them.

Read an excerpt from Origin of Pietas, where survival is only the beginning, and some resurrection changes everything.

Bringer of Chaos #1 – Origin of Pietas

The stasis pod Pietas hid behind rested on the floor and came up to mid-thigh. It hid him, but allowed no view of the door. A sudden change of light told him soldiers had entered. Grunts, they wore beams on their chests to light their way. The idiots had left them on, which let him calculate the level of brightness. At least six.

That was all he warranted? He hardly knew whether to be amused, or insulted.

He waited for a stirring of emotion, but felt none. Smart. They’d sent either androids or ghosts with those new anti-emo chips. The latter would be fun to fight. When he killed them, would they experience a human death, or did they have to be terminated like an Ultra? How well did the chips work?

He’d find out in a minute.

A tiny trickle of fear leaked. That meant three things.
One: ghosts.
Two: anti-emo chips? Worthless.
Three: even the dead feared him.

More fear leaked and then frustration. The ghosts were fighting the effect of the chip. They were afraid of being afraid. Typical. Humans underestimated the power of death. They thought dying and coming back to life meant you’d overcome the fear of dying. He had died multiple times, yet he still avoided it. Their anti-emo chips had given them no edge whatsoever.

Excellent. He could use that.

Another hint of fear surfaced. It zinged over Pietas’s skin like a cool breeze, good as a waft of air. How interesting! Emotion from the reanimated energized more than emotion from the living. He drew the aetheric fear into himself, gathering strength.

The silence meant no air had entered the room. He’d miss his favorite sound: bones breaking in his enemies.
Remaining still, Pietas let them get all the way inside the room.

From Lights Out: Some Soldiers Never Learn #SciFi #SpaceOpera #MFRWhooks

Kayelle Allen 06/10/2026 Science Fiction Books 8 Comments

Bringer of Chaos - #SciFi #SpaceOpera #PietasFans

Some Soldiers Never Learn

Joining the Ghost Corps sounded simple enough.

Die for humanity. Lights Out. Come back stronger.
Fight immortals who refused to stay dead.
The recruiting materials probably omitted a few details.

Like how dying on the job could earn you a reprimand. Or how the paperwork somehow survives every rebirth. Or how the people most qualified to save civilization are often the ones least impressed by the process.

Tornahdo has already died three times.
The Corps keeps bringing him back.

Unfortunately, they also expect him to keep showing up for work.

Some soldiers learn caution.
Some learn wisdom.
Tornahdo learns neither.

Read an excerpt from Lights Out, where death is temporary, duty is forever, and the dead still complain.

From Lights Out

From the ship's bridge, the space station Enderium Six filled every viewscreen. It occupied busy space-lanes outside the Terran Crescent. A steady stream of ships debarked, heading in different directions. Tornahdo's experience with peace talks was limited but something was...off.

Not a good sign for ending a war.

He reined in that thought. Nothing negative. Nothing sarcastic.

He must not allow emotion to claim victory after learning to suppress it. Didn't matter if his anti-emo chip was malfunctioning or not. When the chip worked, it controlled every aspect of his emotions. When it didn't, he controlled them.

Besides, who but a rank newbie counted on military tech to save his butt?

The general would not be pleased with his current struggle after he'd fought to win her approval. He'd asked himself why he desired her admiration but pondering that question always gave him a headache. He just needed it.

His new training permitted a single emotion in his heart. Hatred.

Hardest thing he did. Hating. Wasn't his nature. But ghosts followed orders.

He should not give credence to the niggling doubt that something, somewhere was missing. But grasping the meaning behind the worry? Futile.

He must not worry. He must permit no emotion other than hate.

Ultras controlled the emotions of others. The anti-emo chip blocked them. The chip kept him safe in battle, faithful as a good soldier.

He must not think of self. Only duty.

Only days before, the Ultra's High Council had elected Pietas ap Lorectic as Chancellor. Why choose a bloodthirsty, narcissistic megalomaniac with delusions of godhood and a fabled hatred of humans, and then send him to chair peace talks?

Maybe that was why the Corps shipped Tornahdo and his fellow ghosts to Enderium Six. To make sure the Ultras kept their word.

"You look puzzled, Master Sergeant." A worker tapped colored indicator lights.

Had Tornahdo let his emotions slip or had the chip malfunctioned again? He brushed at lint on his uniform, stalling while he thought of a good excuse. "Odd so many ships are leaving. I thought I'd see arrivals."

"If anyone was arriving you would."

"We're the sole inbound ship?"

"That's right. We're touching down to land your party, load as many civilians as possible, and then we're gone too."

His throat tightened. "They're evacuating the station."

"Yes."

Some peace talks.

When the Ultras found out they'd been lied to these so-called talks would renew the war. So far, his luck at duty stations was holding steady at zero.

Free Science Fiction Books That Ask Bigger Questions | Stories That Linger

Kayelle Allen 05/31/2026 MM Romance

Free Science Fiction / Fantasy Stories - June 2026

Free Science Fiction Books

In science fiction, the future is rarely about technology alone.

The ships matter. The distant worlds matter. Artificial intelligence, empires, colonies, war zones, forgotten planets—all of it creates scale. But the stories readers carry with them long after the final page usually begin somewhere quieter.

A decision made under pressure.

A truth someone can no longer avoid.

A person standing at the edge of change, realizing survival may cost more than expected.

That’s why the best free science fiction books don’t simply entertain. They challenge perspective. They ask what remains human when systems fail, when power shifts, when memory becomes unreliable, or when loyalty collides with survival.

This collection of science fiction stories brings together authors exploring futures shaped by conflict, discovery, resistance, sacrifice, hope, and the fragile connections people fight to preserve. Some stories cross galaxies. Others remain intimate and personal despite the vast settings surrounding them. Some are action-driven and dangerous. Others unfold through atmosphere, mystery, or emotional tension.

What unites them is not subgenre.

It’s consequence.

Science fiction readers know the genre has always been more than prediction. It’s reflection. Every imagined future reveals something about the present moment we’re living through now. The farther these stories travel into the unknown, the more sharply they illuminate fear, ambition, love, grief, resilience, and identity.

And perhaps that’s why readers return to the genre again and again.

Not because science fiction promises certainty.

Because it doesn’t.

The future in these stories is unstable. Governments fracture. Alliances shift. Artificial intelligence evolves beyond expectation. Corporations rewrite morality. Empires rise and collapse. Yet amid all that uncertainty, people continue searching for meaning, connection, and purpose.

Sometimes the most powerful moment in a science fiction novel isn’t the battle.

It’s the pause afterward.

The realization that survival alone was never the real question.

For readers who love immersive worlds, dangerous choices, starships, cybernetic intrigue, alien encounters, rebellion, time distortion, or emotionally layered character journeys, this collaborative collection offers a wide range of voices and visions. Some stories may leave you exhilarated. Others may leave you unsettled. A few may quietly stay with you for days.

That lingering effect is part of what makes science fiction unique.

A good story entertains while you read it.

A lasting story changes the way you look at things afterward.

The authors featured here are sharing stories designed to transport readers beyond familiar boundaries while still holding onto the emotional truths that matter most. Whether you prefer military science fiction, space opera, dystopian futures, cyberpunk worlds, alien diplomacy, survival stories, or character-driven adventures, there’s something here waiting to pull you into another reality.

And because these books are being shared directly by the authors, readers can explore new worlds freely, discover new favorite writers, and expand their libraries without hesitation.

Sometimes all it takes is one unexpected story.

One impossible decision.

One glimpse of the future that feels a little too familiar.

And suddenly, you’re thinking about the world differently than before.

That’s the kind of science fiction that lingers.

Lights Out – Military SciFi

Watch Your Six: – Bringer of Chaos series 3 #SciFi #SpaceMarine #PietasFansHe’d died. Again.

The air reeked of antiseptic. Tornahdo pried open his eyes.

Military hospital.

He’d died. Again.

Spanish curses slipped out. His abuela would’ve taken a switch to him. He made the sign of the cross and kissed his fingertips. After yanking the tube from his arm, he pressed a thumb over the wound. Not writhing on the floor this time. Not yet.

A faceless android in Ghost Corps uniform loomed over a bank of equipment displaying his name and vitals.

This was San Xavier. Same place he’d bought it the first time.

This was getting old.

The transfusion of enemy blood sealed the hole in his arm in seconds.

Voices jabbered nearby.

“Did you hear? He killed six of ’em last night.”

“Yeah, but they don’t stay dead.”

“If Ultras didn’t come back to life, their plasma wouldn’t bring our people back.”

“¡Silencio!” Tornahdo pressed his fingers to his brow. Pain lanced through his skull.

“Sorry, sir.”

“Don’t call me sir. I work for a living.” He slid off the gurney. An orderly reached for him. Tornahdo shook him off. Last thing he needed was some lackey fussing over him.

Two steps—and fire erupted in every cell. Spasms hit. He crashed into a medical cart as his body locked down, every muscle seizing. White-hot pain arched his spine.

If you weren’t dead already—rebirth would kill you.

For a Ghost, the problem wasn’t death. It was the hell of coming back.

This *party* is about to get more interesting… #SciFi #PietasFans #MFRWhooks #EnterTheEmpire

Bringer of Chaos series #SciFiBooks #SpaceOpera

This scene from Forged in Fire is from the viewpoint of Joss, a master telepath and weapons designer, creating everything from smart bullets to cannon on starships.  Joss has positioned herself well above the fray, able to see everyone. What a telepath can see, they can control—up to a point. Pietas is facing off with his father, attempting to reason with the madman. There is no love lost between the narcissistic Mahikos and any living creature. Including the tribe of sentient panthers who had shown up and taken sides with Pietas. After Mahikos killed their alpha and the panther revived, the immortal animals made the man their sworn enemy.

The fight going on now between Pietas and Mahikos has escalated; Mahikos is threatening to set fire to the lifepods cradling their people. Near Joss, the mortal Six, Pietas's new friend, with bow and arrow ready, is tracking every move Mahikos makes.

Not exactly a party...

Forged in Fire: Bringer of Chaos #SciFi #SpaceOperaJoss stayed at Six's side as he tracked Mahikos.

The man swore with eloquent profanity. "Is it always like this?"

"No. They don't usually get along this well."

At that, Six swung his gaze toward her, his astonishment plain. After a moment, he blinked. "Are you serious? Wow, if this is the ap Lorectics getting along, I don't want to see them fighting." He recovered himself and returned to his quarry.

"If you stick around, you'll have no choice. Before the peace talks, they'd avoided each other for almost a century, but a new Council got voted in and they elected Pietas as Chancellor. That made Mahikos Chancellor Emeritus. By common vote, Dessy had been runner up, so she's Second-in-Command. That meant they had to work together every day. There's non-stop arguing. Gets old, believe me."

"I come from a feisty family myself. Someone's always on the outs. If we so much as had a birthday party where the police didn't show up, it was a miracle." He gave a soft chuckle. "Well, this fight's about to get even more interesting."

"How?"

"Above left. By the trees."

She shielded her eyes. "What do you..." She gasped. "Oh, no!"

Against the bright dawn, a ridge of black revealed the silhouettes of over a dozen huge black cats.

An arrow from a bow that small would only annoy him #SciFi #PietasFans #MFRWhooks #EnterTheEmpire

Kayelle Allen 01/28/2026 Science Fiction Books 6 Comments

Bringer of Chaos - #SciFi #SpaceOpera

This scene from Forged in Fire is from the viewpoint of Joss, an on-again-off-again lover of Pietas. Joss is a master telepath and a weapons designer, creating everything from smart bullets to cannon on starships. She taught Pietas about weapons, helping to hone him into a formidable warrior. As this scene begins, Mahikos, Pietas's father, is threatening to set fire to a unit of cryogenic life pods. In all of Ultra history, no Ultra has ever killed another by fire. It's the only death they can't come back from. Pietas is facing off with his father, attempting to reason with him. Joss has positioned herself well above the fray, able to see everyone. What a telepath can see, they can control—up to a point.

Some telepath you are...

Forged in Fire: Bringer of Chaos #SciFi #SpaceOperaA sound to the left put Joss on alert. She hadn't hidden, but she hadn't been standing in the open either. She crept back along the canyon wall, waiting to see who might reveal himself. Had to be one of the men. All the women were in sight. She counted the male members of the Council.

All present. Then who...?

Beside a cluster of brush, Six eased onto the cliff edge. On one knee, he rested a fist against the ground and leaned out to take in the action below. A breeze tousled his dark hair. In profile, he had a strong chin and firm mouth. Lean, muscled body. The smile so quick to show around Pietas was missing up here. Six was all soldier. He might be a beta to Pietas, but on his own, he was alpha.

Interesting.

Then again, wherever and whenever Pietas showed up, he became the alpha almost by default. Everyone deferred to him. He didn't have to take control. People gave it to him.

Except Mahikos. Which always led to fireworks, and now—this.

Joss remained still, keeping Six in sight. Why was he here? Shouldn't he be with Pietas? What was this human up to? And why could she not read him?

Six pulled off his pack. After opening the flap, he reached inside and withdrew something. He'd turned enough for her not to be able to see. He shifted position and raised his hands, revealing a handmade weapon. Six nocked an arrow and drew back the small hunting bow. Excellent form. In a tournament, he'd win points. He might even be deadly against a human, but at this distance and with the size of the bow, he'd do nothing more than annoy an Ultra.

Although, if the point was distraction, that bow might be more than enough. It depended on how many arrows he was prepared to waste.

"Joss." Six didn't take his focus off Mahikos. "You can come out. I won't bite."

She showed herself. "Neither will I."

He never took his gaze off the target. "Good."

He said it as if the single word gave him great pleasure, the way Pietas always did, but she decided not to mention that. "Why are you up here?"

"Waiting for a signal. Pi sent me to cover him." He steadied his hand. "Although I suspect it was more to keep me out of harm's way and make me feel useful. No offense, but he doesn't trust Mahikos."

"No one with any intelligence trusts Mahikos."

"He was Chancellor. How did that happen?"

"Mahikos? Because people are afraid of him. There's an old saying, 'better the demon you know' and Mahikos is the people's favorite untrustworthy demon. Although Pietas is thousands of times better than his father, he's their second favorite. Father and son leapfrog the office. Now and then a token representative gets elected instead."

"Token?"

"Me. Half dozen others. Helia. Although when she's in office, it might as well be Mahikos because she does whatever he tells her to do."

Six gave a slow nod. "Gathered that."

"Did you?"

"Doesn't take eyes to see she and Pi adore each other. Walking across this world with him, I heard so many stories about her I thought I'd known her half my life." Six shifted position, tracking Mahikos. "It's just as obvious that Mahikos abuses her and she loathes him."

"That is not true! They've been married since— You're wrong."

He snorted. "Some telepath you are."

"Excuse me, but being a telepath doesn't mean I know everyone's business. Helia and Mahikos both have strong shields. And," she added, "I have ethics."

Six lowered the bow and looked straight at her. "If you can't see how badly he treats her, you haven't been paying attention, telepath or not."

"You are dead wrong. Helia and I are best friends. I'd be the first to know if what you say were true." He couldn't be correct. Could he? Instead of firing off another retort, she turned her attention to the ongoing fracas.

Pietas remained implacable, standing in one spot, arms folded, watching. To his left, Dessy mimicked his stance. To his right stood Helia, stroking her cat. Members of the Council spread out and took up defensive positions behind them.

Mahikos screamed an obscenity and waved the torch.

Lights Out is 7 – a Science Fiction Origin Story Where the Enemy First Steps Into the Light #PietasFans

Kayelle Allen 01/21/2026 Fallen Empires 6 Comments

Bringer of Chaos series #SciFiBooks #SpaceMarines #PietasFans
Watch Your Six and the Complete Bringer of Chaos Boxed Set are coming soon!

Today marks the book birthday of Lights Out, a short but pivotal work in the Fallen Empires saga—and a science fiction origin story that quietly reshaped how the enemy would be seen going forward.

This is not a victory tale. It’s an initiation.
And years later, Lights Out still marks the moment when easy answers stopped working.

What sparked Lights Out? ⚔️

The story began as a single scene written for Origin of Pietas: eight special operations soldiers sent into a sealed room with no breathable air, tasked with placing a supposedly unconscious enemy into a lifepod.

That enemy was Pietas.

In under a minute, he dispatched seven soldiers using psychic ability and physical force. The last—identified only as Six—survived not because he was stronger, but because he held the final leverage: a code capable of annihilating Pietas’s mother, already locked in stasis.

Six won through endurance, timing, and moral pressure.

Like many science fiction origin stories, that moment refused to stay contained. Especially by what came after.

Who is Six—and why does he matter? 🪖

Six was never meant to be a hero. He was a mortal soldier doing his job.

While guarding Pietas’s lifepod during transport, Six discovered the truth: Pietas wasn’t in stasis at all. He was being tortured—forced to experience death and rebirth repeatedly. His nature would not allow him to permanently die.

When Six realized the mission was built on lies, he removed all insignia from his uniform. Whatever happened next, he would not let a fellow soldier suffer alone.

This science fiction origin story is where a friendship began—between a human soldier and the future leader of an enhanced race. That relationship would later redefine how both sides understood honor, loyalty, and the cost of survival.

What does the title Lights Out mean? 💡

The title carries several meanings:

  • It was the mission name—an attempt to permanently extinguish the “enemy of humanity.”
  • It marked the end of the Ghost Corps, a unit of resurrected special operations soldiers who only existed after their own “lights out.”
  • And it reflects the moment moral clarity fails, and consequences take over.

As a science fiction origin story, Lights Out doesn’t offer clean triumphs—only irreversible choices.

What surprised readers most? 👁️

Many readers expected a monster.

Instead, they found a man.

Pietas is cold, haughty, and openly contemptuous of humanity—but not without reason. Treaties were broken. Promises were violated. Honor mattered to him, even when it didn’t to others.

Throughout the saga, a realization echoes again and again: “You’re not who we were told you were.”

That realization begins here, in this science fiction origin story, long before allegiances shift or histories are rewritten.

Why does Lights Out still matter? 🧱

Because it introduces the human lens.

Six is grounded, approachable, and unmistakably human—the kind of person you’d want to share a drink with and just listen to. Through his eyes, the enemy becomes more than a symbol. Once that door opens, it never fully closes.

Lights Out is an origin point in Fallen Empires—and the first step on a long road that eventually leads to the Immortal Empires saga.

Thank you for remembering where it all began. 🖤

Lights Out: Bringer of Chaos, futuristic military sci-fi #SciFi #MilSF #SpaceOpera science fiction origin storyDeath is just a setback.

If you’re fighting immortals who always get back up, you’d better have a way to do the same.

In a galaxy ruled by power that does not die, survival depends on more than strength. It depends on who is remembered—and who is allowed to return.

When a routine operation spirals into catastrophe, one man discovers that death is not always the end…and that resurrection carries a cost far greater than pain. Forces far older and more dangerous than he ever imagined are watching, recording, and deciding who is worth restoring.

In a universe where immortality is claimed, not granted, every action leaves a mark—and every second chance binds you deeper into the record.

This is not a victory story.

It is an initiation.

Lights Out is the beginning of the Fallen Empires saga, where survival, consequence, and continuity matter more than heroics—and where the dead do not always stay dead.

Helia gave in, but her love for him died in that moment #SciFi #PietasFans #SpaceOpera #MFRWhooks #EnterTheEmpire

Kayelle Allen 01/14/2026 Fallen Empires 5 Comments

Bringer of Chaos series #SciFiBooks #SpaceOpera

This scene from Forged in Fire is from the viewpoint of Helia, mother of the immortal king Pietas. We get rare glimpses of her in this book, because it's mainly from Pietas's point of view. But without being inside her head in a few places, a reader would not understand this woman at all. Her son is 7 terran feet tall; Helia is 4'11". He's one of the most powerful Ultras ever created, while she is one of the least. As this scene begins, Helia's husband, Mahikos, is threatening to set fire to a unit of cryogenic life pods. In all of Ultra history, no Ultra has ever killed another by fire. It's the only death they can't come back from. Pietas is facing off with his father, attempting to reason with him.

Forged in Fire

Forged in Fire: Bringer of Chaos #SciFi #SpaceOperaHard to believe the tall, powerful person facing Mahikos had come from her own body. She, a worker in the scientist class, had given birth to this incredible warrior-scientist. Every time she saw Pietas in action, Helia marveled anew. Though it had been centuries, it felt like she'd held her newborn son yesterday. Perhaps all mothers felt so about their offspring. It did not lessen her awe.

She stood behind him, well back from the verbal fray, listening as Pietas faced his father. Her son's calm words fell on ears closed to reason.

Mahikos demanded to be allowed into camp and take part in the Mingle. To get his way, he threatened to destroy his own people. Instead of working for a solution in the present, he'd rather set fire to the future.

How like Mahikos.

She'd refused the Mingle because to allow his blood to join with hers would put her even deeper under his thrall. Mahikos had insisted if they stuck together, Pietas would accept the terms of the peace talks and submit peacefully.

Pietas? Accept and submit? How long had the man known his son?

She had gone along with it, no better or wiser. What a disgrace to motherhood. She deserved the lowest scorn from her noble son, yet here he was, defending her.

Mahikos had sworn if Pietas surrendered, they'd be given their own world and everything they needed to survive. All she had to do was agree with Mahikos and keep her mouth shut about the deal he'd made.

A replay of her entire marriage. Shut up and obey me, Helia. Do what I tell you, Helia. I know what's best for you, Helia. Do it or you'll be sorry, Helia.

This time, she'd refused with adamant protests. But he'd nagged and wheedled and made promise after promise. When that hadn't swayed her he'd made a single threat. Side with him and make this exile happen, convince Pietas to agree or Mahikos would kill him.

Kill her son.

He'd shown her how he'd do it. Plausible. Possible. Her spouse had hated her son from the moment he saw she loved the boy more than she'd ever loved him. Her son loved her unconditionally. Mahikos gave love to gain what he wanted. He was cruel enough to do as he'd vowed and kill Pietas.

Kill her son!

Helia had given in, but any love she'd ever had for Mahikos died in that moment.

Then, when they arrived on Sempervia, she'd been released from the nightmare of being awakened and refrozen to discover her son was not among them. Thinking him perma-dead, she'd ceased living. How could she survive in a world without her son? Mahikos, Dessy, all the others, everyone claimed it was unchanging destiny. Fate.

No. If fate ruled her life she'd have remained a scientist.

She'd never have become friends with Joss and through her, met a warrior who'd been born in the scientist class and had transformed himself.

Mahikos had freed himself by accident. Once he understood how he'd done it, he freed others and secretly created Ultras without the genetics binding them as slaves. By the time humans realized the danger, it was too late.

Join him, Mahikos had sworn to Helia, and he'd make her what she'd always longed to be: a mother. He knew how to create life and he would make it happen within her. Not be a surrogate for life as some of their kind were, but the mother of her own children.

Her own flesh and blood, Part of her. Hers. How could she refuse?

Instead, he bound her to himself.

His next promise was even more of a lie. Bear me children, and I'll free you.

Once the children were born, his promise changed. It wasn't two children he wanted from her. It was twenty.

Twenty.

While she reeled from the thought of being a breeding machine, she watched how cold he was to the children. How cruel. She protested. Tried to stop him.

He beat her into silent submission.

When he made her pregnant again, she terminated the pregnancy. Every time she discovered she was with child, she destroyed it.

Tore out her own heart with each precious death.

No mother should have to make that kind of decision. Let your child live and be reared like a soldier by an abusive, uncaring monster? Or let him die in peace?

She attempted to free herself, but her very makeup made it impossible. Surely, she could find a way. Perform some research that would uncover the secret that had made Mahikos free. She searched in vain.

Though she could see and understand the process, she had no power to apply the treatment to herself. Freedom tantalized, just beyond her reach. Her bonds existed within her own genetics. That was how humans had kept Ultras captive for so many centuries. How Mahikos enslaved her to his will.

After arriving on Sempervia and discovering Pietas was not among them, she died more each day. She declined to eat, drink, speak. Even for her cherished daughter.

And then a silent howl of empathic rage had swept over the camp two nights ago. No other Ultra had such power. It could be no one but her son.

Pietas was alive.

Hurt. In need. Near.

She couldn't go to him. Instead, she sent the others, refusing to let them tell him how ill she was. Pietas would want to know why, and once he knew the truth, in his anger at her betrayal, he would turn his back. If he discovered her part in his father's charade, he'd never forgive her. Never.

Let Mahikos rage. Let him scream. Let him beg. She would never submit to him again.

No matter how much it hurt her physically to resist and refuse.

If she had to, to keep him from rejoining the camp and taking part, she'd admit her part in Mahikos's conspiracy against Pietas.

Better to face death from her merciful son than his hate-filled father.

Bringer of Chaos Series – Sci-Fi & Space Opera #SciFi #SpaceOpera #PietasFans

Pietas knows what's good for humans, and it's not freedom. An excerpt from book one of the Bringer of Chaos series. In this scene, Pietas is trapped, but he refuses to surrender, even when there is not one shred of hope.

Humans are ruled, not obeyed

Origin of Pietas: Bringer of Chaos - #SciFi #SpaceOperaThe leaders of his people gathered in sleep around him, sealed inside their curved, steel stasis tubes. Above him, humans waited for Pietas to enter the last one.

He folded his arms.

"Feast your eyes, vultures." Pietas lifted his chin. "Humans are ruled, not obeyed. You think to imprison me? You think to bring me down like a hunted animal?" He spread his hands outward, indicating the pods. "I will not cower before you. I will not bow. I will not kneel. I will not serve. I will never submit. Humans were made to be ruled, not by my people, but by me."

The silhouettes of humans above him contrasted with the bright light behind them. One by one, they slipped away, until a single silhouette remained.

"Fighting us accomplishes nothing." The disembodied voice echoed in the chamber. "You won't leave that room until you're in stasis. Enter the pod or we'll siphon the air, and let you die."

"I've died countless times. I do not fear death. Death fears me."

"So be it. Since you're so set on dying, have it your way. I told you if you didn't cooperate, I would detonate the bombs within the hostages you took aboard your ship. See for yourself."

On the opposite wall, an image of the Uurahkal sparkled into life, and a bloom of light filled the screen. A mass of debris shot in all directions.

"Your crew has ceased to exist."

"That image is a farce. You would not dare to destroy the council's flagship, and you will not destroy the council. You humans are cowards. You lock us away in a barren room and threaten our people. This is why humans do not deserve freedom. You are worthless, miserable liars."

"Believe me, your crew is quite dead. The universe is a safer place for it."

"It will never be safe. Not for you."
