What? How can a storm make a decision? #Excerpt Crystal Clear Truth #MFRWhooks #Romance

In this scene from Crystal Clear Truth, Shohn and Joe meet for dinner and to discuss how Shohn's company, idBot, can help Joe find the person he's looking for.

Joe scooted his chair closer. "Is it true that what I say to idBot stays with idBot?"

"It is. Like lawyers and clergy."

"My father considered firestorms not as random incidents." He chewed his lower lip, his bright-blue gaze focused on Shohn. "Kin know when someone's lying, isn't that right?"

"Yes. Human scent gives them away. It's not impossible to lie to us without us knowing, but it is rare."

"You'll know what I say is the truth, correct?"

What was he getting at? Did he plan to lie? Odd way to go about it, if so. "I would know whether you believed something was true."

"Okay." Joe squared his shoulders. "My father believed firestorms have a personal agenda."

She considered those words. "What you're saying is he thought the firestorms themselves were planning where to strike."

"Yes. I know it sounds crazy, but when you examine the evidence..." He sighed. "I don't mean to sound condescending, but you wouldn't understand. There are only a handful of people who would, and those few are all in the TCF. But they refused to take him seriously."

If Saint-Cyr could hear this, he would be cheering. Firestorms did indeed have their own agenda, but this was the first time anyone other than an immortal had recognized it.

Gaining Joe's trust might be the key to carrying out both her missions.

Shohn laid back one ear. "I imagine the TCF tried to silence him."

"They thought he'd lost his mind. He and I debated his theory often, and we'd swap sides. We'd each argue for, then against. We tried poking holes in it, but it held. It frustrated him that the TCF considered his observations 'metaphysical' instead of scientific."

"They didn't appreciate the balance between the two?"

"Not one bit." Joe folded his hands on the table. "My dad literally wrote the book on firestorms, and knew what he was talking about. They'd never dream of letting him go, of course, even if they considered his later theories quackery. I'm more careful about discussing the topic."

"You're saying that, professionally, you have to be dishonest about your beliefs."

"Yes. At least, inside the TCF. I don't talk about what I believe, and I document none of what I do with the TCF. Dad's research was private, but they laid claim to it when he died, and suppressed it. What they don't know is that I have copies of everything in a secure location. His final theories were ridiculed when he was alive, and now that he's gone, they exist, officially, only in what we shared, what I remember, and handwritten notes I've locked away."

“Please. No Kin opera. Humans can’t hear the notes.” #Excerpt Crystal Clear Truth by Kayelle Allen #SciFi #Romance

In this scene, Shohn has asked Joe if he'd mind some music. He agrees so long as it's not Kin opera, because humans can't hear most of the notes.

"Besides," Shohn agreeed. "Kin music is boring. Either it's love songs full of purring, or incessant warbles about some big fish that got away. With the exception of a few Kin rockers managed by one of my boss's companies, I prefer human music. Okay, idBot, play Shohn 'relax number four.'"

An answering tone sounded, and then a piece in piano and cello began, mixed with bass produced by a stringed struoh from the far side of the Empire. The notes thrummed through her, the struoh's notes so deep, she felt them all the way to her core.

"Nice." Joe returned to the couch and put his feet up on a hassock. Eyes closed, he nodded, moving his hands in time to the music. "Love this one when I'm working."

"You listen to Tavane?"

"Mmm. My favorite composer. You know his Metallic Symphonies? Titanium, Steel, Gold, Silver. I have all of them. And that modern piece he did with Wil Hewtan. You know, the soundtrack for that holovid about a human male falling in love with a Kin female. It's one of my favorites. Something-- No, Someone--"

She knew that vid well. Loved it. Watched it repeatedly. "Someone Like Me, Someone Like You."

"Yes!" Joe snapped his fingers. "That. I love that. Can't tell you how many times I've watched it. The interplay of music, and the way they showed color when the Kin interpreted emotions." He sat up straighter. "IdBot, pause music."

It ceased.

"Sorry." He leaned toward her. "I want to restart this song so I can hear it from the top without interruption, but first, was that vid realistic? Did it represent how Kin sense emotions? I've always wondered."

"It's close to perfect. Our kahlah isn't a visual thing, but it got the point across. Tavane is married to a Kin male. He gets it."

"Wow. Did not know that. My favorite part in the vid is when the heroine tells him she's unworthy to speak his name and he says--"

"I want more than my name in your mouth." Shohn giggled. "Mine too." She'd embarrassed herself acknowledging such a thing, but she refused to make it worse by saying more.

"When he toys with her ear, and she kisses him..." He shrugged. "I don't know what it is about that whole scene but I love it."

She did too. But it wouldn't do to say that.

This book is out April 25th. Until May 1st, the entire series is on sale for 99cents per book.

“I live to please.” He could please her indeed #Excerpt Crystal Clear Truth by Kayelle Allen #SciFi #Romance

Crystal Clear Truth - a slow-burn, forced proximity SciFi alien romance set in the far future, in an empire full of treachery and secrets #Romance #SciFi

In this scene, Shohn and Joe have just met, and she's brought him to her home for protection. She has programmed her synther to make dinner. A synther makes food - think microwave crossed with a personal android chef.

Joe took a long sniff. "That is starting to smell good."

"It's a dish with those skinny Tyran noodles, little chunks of beef, and a thick brown sauce. I forget what they call it. I just press twenty-seven on my list of menus. I eat it a couple times a week. It's quick and it fills you up." The synther dinged and shut off. "And it's hot. Let's eat."

Shohn set out ready-made salads and offered Joe a fork, and they sat on the couch. Sitting with bare feet tucked under herself, she dug into the noodles.

Joe groaned. "Oh my stars. I have to tell Nim about this. It's delicious."

"He's the one who got me started on this stuff."

Joe squinted. "Oh yeah, I forgot you knew him. He's been my rock ever since my parents died." He poked through the noodles, piercing vegetables. "He'd be so disappointed in me tonight, though."

"Why?"

He finished chewing before he spoke. "There's a party at the hotel. He insisted I had to make an appearance. I would so much rather be here." He took another bite.

"I hate when I have to be at some party or function for a new client and I don't know anybody."

"Or you know just one person, so you end up being their shadow the whole night."

She stabbed the salad. "I think the only reason I have friends is because they're all extroverts who adopted me and made me go places with them."

"Same. I wouldn't have met Nim if he hadn't introduced himself and literally invited himself over." He stuck his fork into a small tomato. "Although he always gives me grief about my 'fast food archives.' After I eat something, I tend to set the tray on the table instead of recycling it."

"So we're clear. Leave anything that needs tossing on my table or counters, and you'll find out why I'm so heavily armed."

He swallowed. "Is... Was that a joke?"

Shohn speared a bit of salad. "Do you really want to find out?"

Fork in hand, he snapped her a salute. "No, ma'am."

She gave him a knowing nod. "Wise decision."

A bit later, when they'd finished eating, Joe insisted that Shohn relax while he cleared their trays.

"See?" he called from the kitchen area. "I'm recycling." He raised his hands. "Please don't shoot."

Laying back both ears, she extended the claw on her pinky finger. "You know what this gesture means?"

"Um...no. Should I worry?"

"It means, 'I could beat you with my smallest claw' so watch your step, human boy."

He laughed, but he did so while bowing to her. "I live to please, my Kin lady."

Joe could please her indeed.

His hidden truth is her people’s hidden lie #Romance #SciFi #MFRWhooks

His hidden truth is her people's hidden lie #Romance #SciFi

For Women Only by Kayelle Allen

Mehfawni, a Kin ambassador, visits the capitol planet of the empire and meets security expert, Khyff, a human. A death in her family forces Fawni to return home, but she can't bear to part with Khyff and takes him along. Her family demands she cast out the human, or abdicate her future rule.

When Fawni searches for an alternative, she stumbles upon Khyff's secret. The cover-up, if exposed, will betray her world to its enemies, and bare her family to open shame. Her duty is clear. She must shun this human. Yet how can she leave Khyff to suffer in the darkness that binds his heart?

To save his brother, Khyff must seduce and then betray an alien ambassador whose people devastated his family.

Hatred for the aliens burns within him, but unless he can learn to embrace the past, face the demons he swore he'd forget, and find a way to forgive, his brother will die.

He didn't expect the alien to have such honor.

He didn't expect to trust her.

He didn't expect to fall in love.

And he didn't expect to reveal his betrayal...

This book is far from "clean and wholesome" but nowhere near "down and dirty." Even so, the memories Khyff must relive in order to begin healing take him down midnight-dark paths. Fortunately for Khyff, his happy-ever-after is waiting in the light on the other side. Read this book with a box of tissues at your side...

In this scene, Khyff and Mehfawni have had a misunderstanding, and Khyff realized he had to apologize. After he does, Fawni is keen to do something to show him how much she cares for him. Sensing his weariness, she decides he should have a nap. But Khyff again misunderstands what she means by "taking him to bed," and refuses to be put into bed alone.

His hidden truth is her people's hidden lie #Romance #SciFi #MFRWhooksMehfawni returned to the bed and sat beside him. "Will you rest if I stay with you?"

"I'm not tired. I thought you said you were taking me to bed. Unless this means you don't want me." Khyff tilted his chin upward, as challenging as a warrior.

"Khyff, there's no need to pretend with me. Kin kahlah shows the truth. We sense emotion and physical changes. I can 'smell' your weariness. I do not think less of you because you are tired. I'm a warrior. You don't yet understand what that means among my people, but part of it is knowing you can trust me, and knowing I'll look after you ahead of myself." She stroked her thumb across his lower lip. "You've had no reason to trust any of my people up to now, but you can trust me. That means when you need rest, you do not need to pretend otherwise. Do you understand?"

His blue eyes darkened. He glanced away, then opened his mouth, but said nothing. Frustration marred his features.

Asking for emotional closeness cost him pride. She could understand that. It was like asking a lover for sex the first time. His innocence at this rocketed lust through her. She would teach him to trust.

He needed her to care for him. He could satisfy her after she'd made sure he knew he was worthy of love. Her people had destroyed his life, robbed him of his mother, and cast him into a life of hellish maltreatment. She would not use him.

"It's all right, Khyff." Fawni rested her hand over his. "You can say no. I want to care for you, not hurt you."

His eyes widened. He looked from her eyes to her mouth and then back. The tart smell of his fear softened, became less distinct as he struggled with trust. At last, he smelled clean, fresh as the rainforest after a storm.

Yes! He had hope. He felt safe. Another scent arose, like leather, warmed too long in the sun. Pride. He thought he must demand something in return, so he could stay in control. The thought made her smile. He was acting like a warrior. How sweet! How could such an adorable male not be married yet?

"Mehfawni." He worried his lower lip with those straight white teeth of his. "I don't want to be alone. Get in bed with me. If you want me to trust you, how about we cuddle--without sex."

It felt like a black-and-white rainbow had burst into color inside her. It cost him greatly to humble himself and ask for so small a thing. She would deny him nothing.

Did that teasing smile on his face mean he intended to tempt her, or see if she'd give in? Warriors slept with males without having sex all the time. Well, they could. If they wanted to. They hardly ever wanted to, that was all. But they could. She swallowed. She could do this.

"If that will make you happy, Khyffy, then I am happy to grant your desire."

He lay down while she went to the other side and climbed into bed.

She held out her arms and drew him into them. He snuggled next to her while she pulled up the covers. He fit against her as if he'd been created for it.

Khyff rested his head against her shoulder and wrapped one arm around her. The crook of his elbow lay beneath her breast, and he slid his hand behind her shoulder as he tightened his hold. The feel of his warmth against the underside of her breast made her breath catch.

"Is this okay, Fawni?"

She took a shallow breath. "Pah. Yes." She bit into her lip.

"I'm glad. This feels so good. I like having you in my arms. It feels right. You feel right." His voice rumbled against her, sending shivers across her skin. "Tell me if I need to move or if I'm too heavy, okay?"

She nodded, unable to find the breath to speak.

Lying half-pinned beneath the hard length of his body, his arms around her, she swallowed, drowning in lust. A Kin male would have smelled her heat by now. But a Kin male would not have the patience Khyff had with sex. No other lover had ever put her needs so far ahead of his own.

The sound of Khyff's breathing changed. Soon, his body rested more heavily against hers.

She closed her eyes and played with the fair strands of his hair. How would she ever explain to her family that the bed toy she'd chosen turned out to be a man her people almost destroyed? They owed Khyff restitution and renewal. They owed him a life among them. She had to make them understand.

But even she couldn't understand how quickly he'd captured her heart.

No way was he doing the ‘hey can I borrow your key’ thing Excerpt from A Broken Heart #SciFi #Excerpt

A Broken Heart - Thieves' Guild Academy #SciFi #SpaceOpera

In this scene, Senth has just gotten a password protected message from his father and is looking for a private place to hear it. Background - Senth is a professional thief and a student at the Thieves' Guild Academy.

Hacking the Storeroom

Folks in this town never referred to his father by name. You heard the capital letters when they called him the Man or the Harbinger. Luc Saint-Cyr was the daddy crime lord all the baby crime lords wanted to be like when they grew up.

"Ooh, big scary Man." Senth thumbed off the device. "Please let this be a job and not him finding out I hacked Planet Fun."

He crossed the street and entered the Miraj City Bakery Café. No crowd this early, though a group of professors shared drinks at one of the tables in the back. There were no undergraduate classes this week. Cloak distribution had overturned the beehive.

A clean smell of freshly brewed coffee pulled him deeper into the room.

The android on duty rolled up to him. "Welcome. How may I serve you?"

"Like to use your storeroom a minute." He flashed his father's hand sign. "Private business."

"Of course, sir." The droid offered a keycard.

"Oh, please. I've broken into that room so many times, I prolly owe you guys rent."

On the droid's nametag, a bar of yellow lights indicated confusion. "Pardon, sir?"

"It was a joke. Owing rent for--" Senth held up both hands. "Never mind. No key needed."

He followed the maze of corridors to the back. At the door, he pulled out his lockpick and adjusted the settings. When he pointed it at the lock, the device signaled a lockout error and the tiny screen flashed nonsense letters at him.

What in the worlds did probata mean?

He twisted the tip of the pick and floated the stats as a holovid. Probata Corporation. Wasn't that the system his prof in Premium Fingersmithing ranted about? Something about useless upgrades and pointless codes. What did she say about a bypass trick?

"Think, Senth. You sat there listening to the woman fume for two solid wasted hours."

Oh, no he hadn't.

No, that was the day Senth had flaked out of classes and spent a full day at Planet Fun with his mates. He'd recorded it instead. But had he transcribed it to his code book?

Of course not. And didn't that make this encounter so much more fun? He pinched the bridge of his nose, but his father always did that so Senth stopped it at once.

Why was a lock on a coffee shop's storeroom door harder than a security system at the planet's busiest amusement park? What were they storing in there? The Empress's private coffee stash?

Curiosity over the message from his far-from-patient father burned through his mental pockets. Wait. His father. Surely, he'd have the new codes.

Yes, and then he'd want to know why Senth didn't and no way was he explaining to dear old Dad how he hacked into Planet Fun for "a planetful of fun" instead of going to class.

That fortune Dad paid for Senth to attend classes at the guild academy? Yeah, wasted a full day of it to impress a few girls, which was why he was calling needing a bail out.

And no way was he going back to the droid, stand right in front of a table full of Guild professors, and do the Hey can I borrow your key thing.

Riiight.

Meet the Hero of Crystal Clear Truth #SciFi #Romance #MFRWhooks

Crystal Clear Truth - a slow-burn, forced proximity scifi alien romance set in the far future, in an empire full of treachery and secrets

Crystal Clear Truth is supposed to be the final* book in the Antonello Brothers series.

I said that when I wrote book #2 also, so there's that.

This excerpt introduces the hero, Joe Townsend.

In this excerpt, we meet him at the start of his journey in Crystal Clear Truth.
*Subject to character approval 😉

Meet Joe - Crystal Clear Truth

Tarthian Empire, Kyrenie
Fenris City, Taskya District
Birit 53

The barren house echoed the void inside. Empty places looked back, demanding a reaction. But Joe Townsend the third had nothing left to give.

From the moment he'd learned of his folks' accidental death, life had screamed past him like a banshee. The never-ending whirlwind of people needing around-the-clock decisions sucked his energy dry. He leaned against the inside of his parents' front door and slid down.

Today, he'd said his formal goodbyes at their memorial. He'd smiled like a wooden soldier at the unending I'm-so-sorrys and the non-stop oh-poor-Joe-how-are-you-doings.

How did they think he was doing?

Life had plunged him into a lightless, inescapable world of sympathetic platitudes.

How could he move forward when everywhere he looked, the past held him fast?

How could he move forward when every step led him further away from the people he'd loved most?

How could he move forward and lever past this pain?

There had to be a better way to handle heartbreak. A saner way.

Joe stood and dusted himself off. He would throw himself into his work. That's what his dad always--

A fresh ache swept over him.

"Whatever you can't change, accept and work through, Son. Focus on what you can do, what you have to do, and don't waste time looking back."

Joe braced an arm across his stomach. Would he ever think of his father's words of wisdom again without this foreboding sensation of loss? This sense that part of himself was missing? Or of his mother and her strength? Her abiding belief in him, encouraging him, guiding the way?

Dragging his feet, Joe staggered through the house, back to the room that had been his when he lived here as a boy, now stripped bare. His parents had put the house on the market and accepted an offer weeks prior to their deaths. They'd put everything in storage, preparing to move. The new owners would arrive tomorrow.

Nothing remained of the place Joe had once called his haven.

There was no home to go to. Starting tomorrow, this place would be someone else's. Not his parents'. Not his. Not anymore.

This sterile room symbolized everything he'd lost.

He couldn't think about this tonight. Couldn't think about work, even work he'd been preparing for his whole life.

Joe had longed for the opportunity to work at his father's side. The pride he'd felt when appointed had rivaled the thrill of collaborating with him. The joy of raw discovery, uncovering new truths while pushing the frontiers of knowledge to the nth degree.

Now, he was taking his father's place instead. Trying to fill shoes he would never be worthy to wear.

Right this moment, success was a meaningless distraction.

Exhausted, he curled up in the middle of the floor, surrounded by nothing but loss. He'd spend one last night in this empty shell of a place he'd once considered home.

Come morning, he'd walk away forever.

Tell us about the characters and relationships in your stories

One theme in my books is trust. Not only of others, but of yourself. Pietas, my immortal king, at times deals with family issues with the emotional level of a teenager, and I have a three-year-old who looks at life with the wisdom of an ancient. Emotional maturity has little to do with age, and my books reflect that. I have a race of catlike people called the Kin who can smell every emotion, and it's all but impossible to lie to them. Another race, the Chiasmii, are dual gendered, telepathic and see the auras of humans. Between these two races, humans have a hard time pulling a fast one -- but being human -- they still try.
