Playlist: Music for a King — Song # 13 Requiem of the Gods

The third (and final for this list) is Requiem of the Gods from The Critical Mass. Another amazing movie trailer song. I put Requiem on repeat when writing scenes where Pietas faced his foes. It has huge sweeps of music that reflect both power and danger. Most of chapter six was written with this song and Queen’s Breach (song 9). Considering he is fighting a group of reanimated special ops soldiers called ghosts, requiem fits. But it also fits the very opening lines of this book, where Pietas hears the human side reporting their losses.

Aboard the Uurahkal, a holovid screen in the council chamber replayed news from the Siege of San Xavier. In one report, a half dozen Ultra warriors crept over concrete battlements. In a voiceover, a human reporter called the subsequent slaughter of a hundred human soldiers an atrocity.

“Atrocity?” The Chancellor smacked his hand on the podium. Beneath the blow, the wood compressed. “Why do none of these channels show the truth?” Pietas rubbed at the ache forming behind his eyes. “Humans killed over two hundred unarmed Ultras first. We defended ourselves. But we come back from the dead, so our suffering doesn’t matter!”

Playlist: Music for a King — Song # 11 Spirit in the Sky

Spirit in the Sky is an oldie but goodie. been around since 1969, and I can’t tell you how many movie trailers it’s been in. Funny thing is, it rarely ends up in the movies themselves. I love the sound of this one. The minute it begins, you recognize this. It is probably the least like Pietas, but I love the song. Spirit in the Sky always makes me feel good. I needed that when I wrote this intense book. Everyone needs an upbeat song in their playlist. I included a snippet with humor for this one.

Pietas waited until the rain had passed and the sun had come back out before he crawled out of the water-filled hole. He dragged the waterlogged packet of blankets after him.

Six grabbed the soggy packet and helped him drag it from the puddle. They plopped onto the wet ground, side by side. Six pointed to the parachute, half covered with water. “At least it didn’t blow away.”

“You sure did.”

Six laughed. “I did at that.” He wiped his face, smearing mud. He looked over at Pietas and chuckled, but bit his lips and turned his head.

“What?”

After looking back at Pietas, Six laughed again.

“What!”

Six pointed to Pietas’s face. “That mask in the rain… not a good look, Ultra. Like a ‘weapon of mascara destruction’ went ballistic.”

“Weapon of what?” All at once, Pietas got the joke. He burst into laughter, and threw himself onto his back, into the mud. Using both hands, he wiped his wet face. Black smudged his fingers and palms. “If my people could see me right now, they’d never let me live it down.”

“What? You think I will?”

Playlist: Music for a King — Song # 9 Queen’s Breach

Another song by The Critical Mass (I have the album these came from). On YouTube, Queen’s Breach is listed as “Epic action aggressive driving rock powerful”. One listen, and you’ll agree. If this isn’t Pietas in action as a fighter, I don’t know what is. Read chapter six while you listen to this, and you’ll see him in action.

The stasis pod Pietas hid behind rested on the floor, and came up to mid-thigh. It hid him, but allowed no view of the door. A sudden change of light told him soldiers had entered. Grunts, they wore beams on their chests to light their way. The idiots had left them on, which let him calculate the level of brightness. At least six.

That was all he warranted? He hardly knew whether to be amused, or insulted.

He waited for a stirring of emotion, but felt none. Smart. They’d sent either androids or special ops ghosts with those new anti-emo chips. The latter would be fun to fight. When he killed them, would they experience a human death, or did they have to be terminated like an Ultra? How well did the chips work?

He’d find out in a minute.

Playlist: Music for a King — Song # 7 Monster

Another favorite song. I’ve played Monster so many times if it was on vinyl it would have a permanent groove on this track. Monster fits Pietas to a T. “I must confess that I feel like a monster.” He is one of the most beautiful immortals ever created, yet he has been shunned and betrayed so many times, he is broken inside. He feels unworthy of his people, yet he strives to protect them, even to the point of making all of mankind his enemy.

His sister selected an ornate turquoise dragon he’d displayed on a glass table and examined it. “Whatever you said to Father, he was still furious about when I saw him at breakfast.” She rolled the egg-sized sculpture between her hands. “He’s all but accusing you of treason against the council.”

“I’m used to Father’s baseless accusations.”

Dessy tossed the priceless carving into the air, and then caught it. “Mother hasn’t disagreed with him this time, but then she’s been quiet this trip.”

This time, when she tossed up the dragon, he snatched it from the air and placed it on the table. “I don’t need you to report on our parents.”

“I’m sure you have your own spies.” She trailed her fingers along a row of ceramic dragon statues on a glass shelf. The last, the largest of the set, portrayed him. He stood, arms folded, inside the protective wings of a massive silver dragon. “Really, Pietas, who keeps a statue of himself? And why all the dragons?”

Listen to Mind Heist, the theme from the movie Inception, and let the opening sweep you into its power. This is Pietas–a king who pulls you under his spell and then takes you into a path you never expected: a mind heist. Readers will hate him at the opening part of the book, but by its end, his noble heart will win them over.

“Mortals! How I tire of that word. I believe I’ll start calling them Mundanes.”

“Why not? It smacks of your usual disrespect and bigotry.”

Pietas sputtered a laugh. “I find it incredulous that the indignant and righteous Mahikos who led our people in rebellion against humanity has fallen so far from his ideals. What happened to the motto ‘Freedom, Fairness, Fortune’ that rallied our people? I was four years old. We were still hidden then. No one knew Dessy and I existed except you and Mother. But you hoisted us both onto your shoulders and we stayed behind darkened glass and watched as thousands of our people cheered in the streets. You’d won them freedom, and they shouted your name. Oh, in that moment, Father, I wanted to be just like you. No, I wanted to be you. Now?” He ignored the angry twitch tugging at one eyelid. “You want us to treat humans as equals. They never treated us as such. Even now, we’re hated and reviled. Putting them on the council will make them haughtier. I want nothing to do with humans.”

“Then you want nothing to do with me, Son. Humans are all I care about.”

And wasn’t that the naked truth of his father’s betrayal? He had turned his back on their people. He had turned his back on his son.

Playlist: Music for a King — Song # 5 Made of Scars

If ever a song fit Pietas, it is this one. He is literally made of scars. His never show. He heals too fast for any sign of them to remain. There’s a line in this song that fits him. Referring to his scars, the singer says “this one isn’t even there, but I feel it more because you don’t care.” When I heard that, it was like Pietas himself speaking to me.

“If they keep their word, these talks will end the war. We’ll have peace.”

“Ah, and isn’t that the key. If. Humans do not surrender well. They say the word ‘human’ as if it were synonymous with ‘king.’ These talks are nothing more than a ruse by you bleeding hearts who want to ‘stop the killing.’ As if killing was not what you were born to do. Embrace your purpose, Father. You are a killer. Like me.”

“We’re also scientists. Even I will admit you are the finest among our people. Embrace that. We don’t have to kill. The war has cost billions of human lives, while not one of us has perished.”

“As usual, you discount my deaths.”

“Yours don’t count. You come back.”

“I see.” Had anything Pietas had ever done counted? Not to the man before him. “Tell me, Father.” He picked up the silver circlet and toyed with it. “Would it be better if some of us had been terminated by fire, or one of the other ways to end us permanently? How many perma-deaths would suffice? Are two sufficient? A hundred? Or would mine be enough?”

When you hear the first few notes of Fatal it will no doubt be familiar. This song has been in numerous movie trailers. It’s instrumental, and it portrays power and build up as well as aggression, yet it is controlled and simple. It fits both Pietas and Six.

“These talks will solve nothing. They’re going to try something stupid. We’ll slaughter them for it, and as usual, we’ll be blamed. What is so hard to grasp about this?” Pietas reached out with his empathic senses, but encountered the blunt edge of his father’s shields. There would be no persuasion except by speech. “I wish I could show you, once and for all, that humans are cutthroats. They will not honor their word. They will not abide by our laws. They will usurp our power and try to control the galaxy as if it belonged to them.”

“It does belong to them.”

Pietas threw up a hand. “This again.”

“The galaxy was theirs before we claimed it. Son, humanity is an ancient civilization. We are the usurpers. Yes, we are more powerful. We should be benevolent rulers, not despots. Might does not make right.” He finished the brandy and set down the glass with a thud. “But let’s attempt civility. We’re both members of the council and should discuss topics with one another out of respect for the office.” The glare Mahikos leveled his way carried the empathic warmth of an ice blade. “Even if we detest one another on a personal level.”
