The perils of parenting a professional thief 😏🔐 #SciFi #MMRomance #MFRWhooks

Wulf, Tales of the Chosen MM Sci-Fi Romance #MMRomance #MMReads #SciFi

After getting a call from the Thieves' Guild Academy that Senth had been suspended from school, Luc had to hop between planets and fly home. Now, dinner over, father and son finally talk. This scene takes place on the planet Kelthia in Luc's home.

There's no rule. I checked.

Luc and Senthys cleaned the kitchen after dinner while Wulf napped on the couch. For once, Senthys didn't argue over homework and he completed his academic lessons without difficulty. Luc practiced with him for the Level 14 Advanced Pickpocket exam he'd take next week.

After Luc put Senthys through his paces, he clapped his son on the shoulder. "Excellent work. No doubt you'll pass with a perfect score."

"Thank you, Sen'dai."

"According to the Headmaster, you have the highest aptitude in the Academy."

Senthys shut off the learning pad and picked it up. "He always talks to me like I'm a screw-up."

"That's because you insist on pranks and foolishness."

"Okay, yeah, I like pranks, but I'm no screw up."

"I agree with you there. So suppose you explain to me how you got suspended from the Thieves' Guild Academy for stealing ice cream from the lunch room."

"Oh, that." His son made an off-handed gesture. "One of my friends got put on punishment for not studying, even though he knows the material perfectly. They told him he couldn't buy ice cream for a week."

"How does that involve you?"

"Well, they didn't tell me I couldn't buy it for him."

Luc rubbed his mouth, leaning back. "The way Headmaster de Laney tells it, you stole the ice cream."

"Yeah, but only because he punished me for buying it for him. That wasn't fair. There's nothing in the handbook about not stealing ice cream. I checked."

How like his son to know precisely how far to push the rules. Toes right on the line but never going over. Luc waited to see if Senthys would say more.

"You sent me to the Academy to learn to be a professional thief, yet stealing from them is against the rules?" Senthys folded his arms. "Explain that if you can."

Luc opted for the answer that would end the conversation fastest. "The headmasters don't like anyone working the system and showing them up. You know what that means?"

"Yeah. Exactly. Don't get caught again."

NarrAy can finally drop her cover and take time off #SciFi #Romance #MFRWhooks

At the Mercy of Her Pleasure #SciFi #Romance

In this scene, Captain NarrAy Jorlan has just come from a meeting with a professional thief (Senth Antonello). The basic mission has been explained and agreed to. Now she's back aboard the Jalane, ready to drop the cover created for the mission.

Dropping the Cover

All People's Liberation Army Ship Jalane
Officers' Quarters

After a debriefing with her superior, NarrAy returned to her cabin. She locked the door and set the privacy indicator to full block, then kicked off her high heels and set about stripping off the red party dress. The All People's Liberation Army had spent a tradestandard month raising funds for this mission, and she couldn't waste one drak of it by spoiling the clothes. She'd have to wear the dress aboard ship on the way to Tarth.

Her cover as a wealthy woman on vacation with a full staff had not been her idea, and she'd fought the nonsense of spending an outrageous sum for party clothes, flying on a sleepliner—empire-class no less—reserving the finest suite in the biggest hotel, ground transportation, and the flight back.

All she'd wanted was the cost for hiring a member of the elite Thieves' Guild with the right expertise for the job.

But the Sleeper, the APLA's leader, insisted that individuals who could afford to hire a Level Nineteen thief were wealthy. He'd promised a special price if NarrAy hired the son of his old friend, the Harbinger. Letting Saint-Cyr know why the APLA wanted the stolen device back was out of the question. Hence the elaborate cover.

The Harbinger's "special" price by itself was triple her original budget. She comforted herself with the thought that it could have been much much more. Getting into a government holding area, even a backwater one, meant paying the dues.

"How does anyone afford these guys?" NarrAy hung the dress inside her bagbot and stuffed the shoes into their cubby. "Please let Senth be worth it."

She stepped back and took in the meticulously arranged articles of clothing, hung according to length, and grouped by color. She never wore red, but almost everything in the bagbot blared the color. Her assistant Encie's doing. The Kin female had shown off each item as if it were precious gold. Who cared about brand names? Clothes covered the body. End of story.

One slim drawer had bras folded with their cups tucked into one another, each lying beside the other in neat rows. Strips of cloth she assumed were panties lay grouped by color. A smaller drawer held cosmetics, none of which NarrAy recognized. Beyond her preferred fragrance-free soap and moisturizer, the rest belonged to the persona she'd display during the mission.

Encie had helped her dress and apply cosmetics, chiding NarrAy for not knowing how to use them.

NarrAy had set her straight on that. An addictive Better like herself could be arrested for attracting people, and NarrAy was not going to enhance her looks even more.

But the Sleeper had intervened and insisted. NarrAy's cover demanded she portray a flashy, sensual woman who traveled empire class, insisted on the best of the best, and bought what she wanted when she wanted it. Including the services of a top of the line Thieves' Guild member.

All that mattered was the mission.

“Your pretty-boy thief is late.” Excerpt free book #SciFi #Romance #MFRWhooks

At the Mercy of Her Pleasure #SciFi #Romance

A deleted scene from At the Mercy of Her Pleasure

In the book, Captain NarrAy Jorlan meets with Senth at a coffee shop adjacent to the Thieves' Guild. But in this version, they meet at the Starport.

Inside secret: the starport on Kelthia is named Starhaven Leojnimaj. Those are the names of my sons combined and backward (Joel, Jamin). NarrAy's last name, Jorlan, was chosen in honor of the hero of Dara Joy's book Ritual of Proof.

Starport Meetup

Kelthia, Miraj City, Starhaven Leojnimaj
Coffee Shop, Concourse D

NarrAy sat, holding a cup of coffee she didn't want and had no interest in tasting. A plain dress hid beneath her black hooded cape, covering every inch of skin as the law required for Betters. How long would it be before they forced her to hide her face too? She blew on the coffee. Where was her thief?

She touched the edge of her hood, activating a mic. "Anything yet?"

"Nothing." Broxus answered from the south terminal.

"No sign." Encie made ticking sounds into the transmitter. "Your pretty-boy thief is late."

"We'll give him two more minutes."

"You're too easy, boss." More ticking.

What was that noise? NarrAy scanned the area. "Encie, I thought you quit biting your nails."

"I'm not bi-- Hey. How'd you know I was doing that?"

"You may be on the north side of the concourse, but I can see you between the lockers." She blew on the coffee.

Her assistant stood up straight and glanced around. "I forgot about those eyes of yours."

"Yes, well, it was my ears that heard you nibbling."

"Nibbling what?" Senth asked, dropping into a chair.

NarrAy set down her coffee so fast it spilled. "Where did you come from?"

"Cohorts didn't see me?" His inviting mouth stretched into a smile. "Level nineteen thief, remember? If those two could spot me, I wouldn't be worth what you're paying." Using her napkin, he sopped up the coffee.

Brox's and Encie's questioning voices broke into her concentration.

"He's here. We're leaving." When she rose, Senth assisted her with her chair.

Not that she wanted or needed help, but imagine a thief with manners. Well, well... This could be interesting.

Senth “liberates” a few coins #excerpt free book #SciFi #Romance #MFRWhooks

At the Mercy of Her Pleasure #SciFi #Romance

In this scene, Senth and Khyff are about to meet with Senth's father, Luc Saint-Cyr, at an infamous club in a bad part of town, when they run into a little snag. Seems Senth's "baby face" means no one takes him seriously.

Good thing his father -- known as the Man -- has a reputation that opens doors. And Senth has a real talent for liberating items...

The Bouncer

As Senth approached The Ghost, the club's beefy Kin bouncer put out a hand. "Hold up, kid. You--" She motioned toward Khyff -- "Wait over there. Now..." She motioned Senth aside. "You got ID?"

Senth opened his cloak, revealing the lining with its unmistakable Thieves' Guild insignia, a skeleton key inside a slashed circle. He gave his Sen'dai's hand sign, two fingers held at the level of his waist.

"Ffffftt!" The bouncer made an apologetic shrug. "Sorry. Why didn't you say you were the Man's right up front?"

"His shouldn't have to." Senth brushed a hand down the front of the cloak. "And I'm no kid."

"Sorry, sir." She opened the door for both of them and bowed.

Once inside, Khyff held out one palm, and Senth slid his down it, hooked his fingers as Khyff did, and with hands clasped, gave one downward shake.

"C'mon, Bro." Khyff led the way past the darkened foyer.

Inside, music pulsed like a living entity. Throbbing bass tickled Senth's chest, and he coughed. Drums pounded. Colored lights swept the cavernous room. Strobes flashed across the congested dance floor, highlighting bobbing heads and upflung arms. Light glinted off human bodies slick with sweat, while bared and damp Kin furskin stuck out in points, laden with glitter.

"Stay close," Khyff shouted over the pounding music, standing next to Senth. He headed for the rear and left no chance to argue.

Senth skirted around the crammed dance area, liberating loose credit stubs clipped to belts. In this place, it wouldn't take long for the pockets of his cloak to bulge.

He tried not to stare at the half-naked slakes along the wall, but their clothing and attitude declared their availability. A pair of male and female slakes bent over a low railing, their pants around their ankles. Androgs handled their bodies like merchandise.

Khyff nudged him. "Comparison shoppers."

Senth frowned. "Not funny."

"Try being the one hanging over the railing." Khyff jerked his head to the side.

“Why is this so hard? Find her. Tell me. Not difficult.” #Excerpt free book A Stolen Heart #SciFi #MMRomance #MFRWhooks

A Stolen Heart - Thieves' Guild Academy #MMRomance #SciFi

In this scene, when Luc is asked to find a missing child, he's sure he's missing something. After all, this is the master of misdirection he's talking to: Pietas, who wants him to find a kid. Sure he does. Meanwhile, the king has brought out his panther and is petting the animal. It's far from tame, but Luc is quite familiar with it.

"Find her."

"I want you to locate the girl." Pietas stroked the panther. "Once you tell me where she is, you'll be free. I don't need you to rescue her. Just inform me."

"I see." Luc did not. "Find this ten year-old girl. Tell you where she is. That's it."

"Yes. Then after your Deshai graduates, you can move to Tarth and start that building you've been planning."

This was far too easy. Obviously, Luc had missed something. Mentally, he walked back through the last bits of conversation. "To clarify, you don't want me to bring her to you. You want me to find her and tell you where she is."

"Asked and answered." Pietas studied him. "Why is this so hard? Find her. Tell me. Not difficult. But it is urgent."

"What's so important about her?"

Pietas kissed the panther on the nose. "It's not her so much as her parents. If we find her and then take her to them, we'll have more influence."

Now they were getting somewhere. "And who are they?"

"My sister told you about the FTA, didn't she?"

"FTA." Acronyms filled his world, but this one? New to him. Why did that earlier dread raise its ugly head again? He'd probably be better off not knowing, but Pietas seemed to be waiting for an answer. "Not a word. What is it?"

"She didn't?" Pietas frowned. "Oh, I thought... Never mind." He tugged the panther's ears. "The FTA is the Forgotten Technologies Arena."

"Forgotten by whom?"

"The ancients. It's secret tech. Forbidden."

"Forbidden." The headache he'd faced over the last hour spiked through his brain. He rubbed his temples. Why him? Why now? "Pietas..."

"Oh, will you stop worrying?" The man looked over at him. "No one's going to get sucked into a wormhole this time."

Luc forced himself to take a deep breath and let it all the way out. "That's what you said the last time."

“Why are you in my shower?” #Excerpt A Stolen Heart #SciFi #MMRomance #MFRWhooks

A Stolen Heart - Thieves' Guild Academy #MMRomance #SciFi

After a day full of drama, all Luc wants is a shower and some wine. Not necessarily in that order. (To portal is to instantly transport; think "beam me up.")

Why are you in my shower?

Inside his room, Luc shut the door, activated locks and set full privacy settings. It took three seconds to choose a bottle of Skovron Blush '37. Light, delicate and sweet. He opened the bottle to let the wine breathe while he set about stripping. Everything but the shoes went into the recycler, although he considered ditching those too. If his house-droids couldn't whisk them clean, he'd let them get rid of the shoes. Not his problem.

Luc chose a wineglass, poured, then carried it into the bathing area. After a sip, he set the glass on a marble countertop and slid open the smoky-gray glass door of the shower.

Pietas stepped into view, fully clothed. "I do not need a shower, thank you."

Luc snatched a towel and whipped it around himself. "My lord--" An explosive sigh burst from him. "What are you doing in my shower?"

"I wanted to see you."

"In the shower?"

With a flirty smile, Pietas leaned one shoulder against the wall. "You must admit, it is a good place to see you."

A headache shoved its way forward. "Not happening, Pietas."

"Spoilsport."

"Again, what are you doing here?"

"I portaled into your room and heard the door open, so I came in here, and--" He lifted his chin. "I am your king. I go where I please."

"I asked you not to portal here, my lord. My Deshai are home."

"Which is why--" With a groan, Pietas clenched his fists. "Only you would expect me to explain myself." He gestured toward Luc. "You explain. Where have you been? Are you showering because you're going out, or..." He trailed a look down Luc's length. "...going to bed?" He ended the question with a smile.

"Bed. Alone. I've dealt with drama for days." Luc picked up the wine and drank it in one gulp. "I need a refill." Without waiting for a response, he marched himself back to his room, retrieved the bottle and poured, then splashed wine into a second glass.

Drinking alcohol had no effect on Sempervians, but the act itself soothed. It offered tradition. Comfort. And when needed, a means of stalling while you decided how much truth you could afford to tell.

He offered the second glass.

His king lifted it, sniffed, sipped. "This is good. From one of your wineries?"

"Yes. One of the Skovron locations." Luc swirled his wine, waiting until Pietas took another sip. "It's your sister's favorite."

Mouth twisting, Pietas set down his glass with a click.

The more dangerous person in this room wasn’t the monster #Excerpt A Stolen Heart #SciFi #MMRomance #MFRWhooks

A Stolen Heart - Thieves' Guild Academy #MMRomance #SciFi

Luc Saint-Cyr is waiting for the headmistress of the Thieves' Guild Academy when a toddler runs through the open door. The boy is clearly terrified, and Luc quickly realizes what the boy fears is the teacher who comes after him. Luc directs the boy to hide behind the door and sends the teacher on a wild goose chase. But now Luc is stuck dealing with a child, and what he knows about kids could be written on his palm, with plenty of room to spare. The boy, however, has immediately claimed Luc, though his rescuer doesn't know that yet.

Excerpt A Stolen Heart

Senthys blinked up at Luc. "I wanna go with you. I'll be good. I don't bite. I don't have claws." He held up his fingers. "See?"

Those words wrenched his heart. What had this child been taught about himself? About his people? Kin bit and clawed the enemy, not random strangers. Besides, the more dangerous person in this room wasn't the boy. This little innocent would be trading one monster for another.

"Senthys." Careful not to pull the boy's curls, Luc brushed them back from the lad's face. "Saving you from a monster doesn't mean I'm not one."

"Yes, it does." The child blinked away tears. "You're a good person. You smell good. Kin know."

"You mean you have kahlah?" A Kin's ability to smell emotion made it nearly impossible to lie to one of them. Quite unhandy for those with less scruples. "Do HalfKin have that ability?" The boy's grey pullover hung partway off his shoulder, revealing a striped shirt beneath. Luc adjusted it.

"Uh huh. I smell better than humans. I smell good people." Senthys touched Luc's chest. "You smell good."

"I think you're too young to know what 'good people' smell like yet."

"Yes, I do. My teacher stinks."

Luc almost choked, trying to stifle a laugh.

The panther’s green-eyed gaze locked on target. Him #MMRomance #GayDad #MFRWhooks

A Stolen Heart - Thieves' Guild Academy #MMRomance #SciFi

In the Thieve's Guild Academy, honor comes before everything. The phrase "no honor among thieves" definitely  does NOT apply. Here, Luc Saint-Cyr is about to meet with the immortal king, Pietas. The king has been secretive about his motives, leaving Luc to wonder what's happening next.

The panther's green-eyed gaze...

Like the rest of Pietas's ship, the stark white room held no courtiers. Luc's footsteps on the bare floor echoed. The walkway sloped downward toward a dais on which sat a simple wooden throne, its high back upholstered in turquoise. That throne and--missing today--the unmarked silver circlet Pietas wore on state occasions were his sole outward concessions to royalty.

That didn't mean he wouldn't remind you who was in charge.

Pietas fit Luc's memories of him.

The king sat sideways, one leg crooked over the throne's arm, swinging his foot like a boy playing.

The man never sat idly on a throne in an empty room. Pomp and circumstance meant nothing to him. Yes, Pietas went on and on about how his subjects must obey him, but that was all for show.

Results. Action. Change. Those were what mattered.

Which meant this farce was pure misdirection. The king wanted something and wasn't going to ask for it outright. So much more fun to finagle, manipulate and redirect. At least, for him.

Luc tamped down the anxiety riling his stomach. Whatever the man wanted, he'd get to it soon enough.

The massive black panther beside the throne watched the king's booted foot swing to and fro, until Luc halted a respectful distance away. Then the cat's focus narrowed, and the green-eyed gaze locked onto Luc.

Target acquired.

Luc made a shallow bow.

In private, Pietas would not allow him to offer more. "You're my equal," he'd say, making him rise. Yet neither of them ever forgot which was king.

"Tiklaus, look who's come to see us." Pietas unfolded his lean seven-foot frame, planted both feet on the floor and bent toward the panther. As always, his king wore pristine white, the only relief his knee-high black boots and multiple rings, bracelets and necklaces adorning his person. "It's Cyken. Our friend." He looked Luc's way.

Friend?

Pietas wanted something all right. Unless he did, he never invoked the F word.

If what this client says is true, Khyff will be the one paying #SciFi #FoundFamily #MFRWhooks

A Broken Heart - Thieves' Guild Academy #SciFi #SpaceOpera

Client or Friend?

As usual, Khyff's master hadn't allowed him to eat until he'd met his quota. First up: shower, clean clothes, food. Not necessarily in that order. He kept a few stale crackers hidden in his room for emergencies. He'd satisfied his last client, and was unscheduled the rest of the day. Or at least the next six hours.

Khyff bolted toward freedom.

"So you're an Antonello."

The way the client said it drew Khyff's attention. This particular client was one of the less odious. He didn't grab or cling, he was--thankfully--clean, and he tipped well. Still, the guy was paying for sex and Khyff had no choice. Being a pleasure slave meant you serviced the clients sent to you, or you suffered for it. In Khyff's case, refusing meant risking prison.

He would never go back there, no matter what they made him do here.

Khyff clenched his teeth and pasted on a smile. "Pardon?"

"Your last name." The guy continued getting dressed, seemingly in no hurry. "It's Antonello, right?"

"Why?"

"I never noticed before. It's right here on my receipt." He picked up his mobile and turned the screen toward Khyff. "I mean I've been here what... five times now?" He poked at the screen. "Whoa! Seven. Huh. I should have a free visit after three more."

Khyff choked back a retort. His master was giving away free visits with him? It would take hundreds of client visits to earn enough in his Freedom Savings Account so Khyff could buy himself. If his master was giving him away, it would take forever.

Khyff jerked open the door.

"You don't look like the other one."

Half a step into the hall, Khyff's heart stuttered. He made a slow pivot. "Other one?"

"The other Antonello. You look different."

The world went silent. Khyff came inside, shut the door and leaned against it. "So I'm sure I heard right. You know another Antonello."

"Yeah. I saw the name, and figured you had to be related. Antonello's not common. Not on Kelthia. I'm guessing you don't have much family here."

Good guess. More than three quarters of the world's population was black-skinned. Khyff had blond hair, blue eyes, fair skin.

Could this be a link to his missing mother? Did the client know her? Khyff fought the hope that rose within him. It had been how many years? No, he would not allow himself to hope. When you hoped, people could hurt you more.
