Character in the Antonello Brothers series, and Thieves’ Guild Academy stories

The holographic playhouse had morphed into a cage #MMRomance #AcademyRomance #MFRWhooks

A Divided Heart #MMRomance #SciFi #WriteLGBTQ

In this excerpt, Brinn's relationship with foster-child Dresden and his own foster-sister, Hahlibeth, unfolds after a simple misunderstanding. Brinn confronts hidden anxieties through gentle actions rather than grand gestures, reflecting the subtle intimacy and trust emerging among the characters.

Dresden is Missing

"Follow me." Brinn tucked the coin he'd been using for practice into a pocket.

Hahlibeth tagged along behind him through the house to the kitchen and then out a side door leading to the backyard.

Brinn turned to her. "Remember the old playhouse? I showed it to Dresden this morning."

With Hahlibeth at his side, Brinn rounded the corner.

Dresden had morphed the playhouse into a giant mowt cage with tightly spaced bars around the bottom.

Inside on the grass, Dresden slept, curled into a ball. Beside her, the smaller mowt cage sat open while the mowt explored the blades of grass.

Hahlibeth sighed. "Oh, thank goodness."

Yawning, Dresden rubbed her eyes. When she noticed them, she sat up. "I couldn't let Bonkers out of his cage, so I made a bigger one." She pointed to the base of the walls. "I even made the base part tiny so he couldn't sneak out."

"You did a good job." Brinn knelt near the door. "But Ms. Hahlibeth didn't know where you were, and we were worried."

Dresden scooped up the mowt and put him back in the small cage. "I'll pack my things." She started past Brinn.

"No." He held up a hand, stopping her. "There's no need for that. We were worried, yes, but you were in a safe space and in an area where we said you could play. You made sure the mowt was safe too. You didn't do anything wrong."

Her chin quivered. "I didn't?"

"No. You did an excellent job, didn't she Hahlibeth?"

Hahlibeth squatted beside him. "Yes. I was only worried because I didn't know where you were. You're welcome to come out here anytime. Just let us know. All right?"

Rubbing one eye, Dresden sniffed. "I'm not going back?"

"You're staying right here." Brinn stood set a hand on Dresden's shoulder. "Tomorrow, we'll go together. It's the first day of school, and your friends will be there."

Dresden looked up at him as if seeing him for the first time.

"Ready to go inside?"

The girl shifted the cage to her other side, reached up, and took Brinn's hand.

Not even the security system can find her #MMRomance #AcademyRomance #MFRWhooks

A Divided Heart #MMRomance #SciFi #WriteLGBTQ

In this excerpt, Brinn prepares for his next day’s classes and practices his fingersmithing skills, while his companion, Hahlibeth, discovers their young charge, Dresden, is missing. After confirming with idBot—the normally dependable system responsible for tracking all individuals inside the house—they quickly realize that Dresden is indeed nowhere inside their home. Concerned and uncertain about Dresden’s whereabouts, Brinn offers reassurance, hinting that he might already have an idea where the child has gone. This opening sets the stage, providing insight into the everyday lives within a unique family, and the quiet tension beneath their everyday routines.

She's Missing

While Hahlibeth worked on her lesson plan and Dresden napped, Brinn went over notes for the classes he'd be teaching the next day. His three morning sessions were all short, designed for younger students. In the afternoon, he had a two-hour workshop, with an overview of Fingersmithing for Beginners, a sub-specialty for Simple Pickpocket students studying for Level Ten. Those ages ranged from ten to adult. At least, for human students.

HalfKin students usually finished all seven levels within the Simple range by the time they were eight. His foster-brother, Senth, had entered at age five and breezed all the way through by age six. With Dresden's nimble brain, who knew what she could do?

To warm up his hands for the pickpocketing demos, he pulled out a coin and flipped it over the back of his fingers, switched hands, and then sent it back.

"Brinn!" Breathless, Hahlibeth ran into the room.

He leaped to his feet, fumbling the coin. "What's wrong?"

"Dresden. I can't find her anywhere. I put her down for a nap and the last time I checked on her, she was asleep. I just looked in and she's gone. I searched upstairs. She's nowhere."

He tapped his bracelet. "IdBot, location of Dresden Fasra."

"Checking," the soothing female voice responded. "Dresden Fasra is not inside the house."

"Then where is she?"

"IdBot does not have sufficient data to respond to the query."

"Which door did she leave by?"

"IdBot does not have sufficient data to respond to the query."

"Okay, now I'm worried." Hahlibeth crossed to one of the windows overlooking the front yard. "If idBot can't find her, you know she's lost. What's that saying?"

"You mean that idBot sees everything? Apparently, not quite." Brinn picked up the coin and flipped it into the air. "But I think I know where she is."

There is nothing going on with him. Nothing at all #MMRomance #AcademyRomance #MFRWhooks

A Divided Heart #MMRomance #SciFi #WriteLGBTQ

A Divided Heart #MMRomance #SciFi #WriteLGBTQIn this excerpt, Brinn sits on the stairs, lost in memory about the same house he now shares with his student, Dresden. His mind drifts over past events held within these walls—Guild graduations, intense late-night studies, and the leadership of his mentor, Luc. Hahlibeth, his co-teacher and foster-sister, joins him, offering an understanding ear and gentle reassurance as they discuss Dresden's adjustment to a new life.

What's next?

On the stairs, Brinn turned and sat, elbows braced on his knees, thinking back over the day. How bizarre was it to have a student of his own in this house, where he had so many memories. Graduation parties for reaching the various levels in the Guild. Long nights spent studying. Being quizzed by Luc, asking him questions, getting his advice. Learning the laws that pertained to the types of theft Brinn planned to pursue. Understanding contracts for theft and how to protect himself against dubious clauses and demands.

He was still sitting there when Hahlibeth came down.

She sat beside him. "I got two pages into a story, and she was out. I thought she might be faking it at first. My brother and I used to do that sometimes. We'd talk in the dark. I finished reading and sat there, waiting, but she didn't move."

"You think she's happy?"

"I don't think she knows what to think."

"Probably right."

Hahlibeth gripped one of his hands and leaned toward him. "She's young. She's in a new place. Her life has been disrupted. We can't expect anything like normal. She doesn't even know what normal is right now. At least, not what's normal for an Academy student."

Brinn set one arm around Hahlibeth's shoulders and hugged her. "I'm so glad to be doing this with you."

"Me too." She leaned against him and then away. "So, what's with the sexual tension between you and Kam?"

He twisted to face her, putting his back against the railing. "Um... What?"

"Oh, don't pretend. It was so thick you could cut it with a knife."

"Hahlibeth, I promise you. There is nothing going on between Kam and me. If you're sensing anything, it's frustration and annoyance."

She chuckled. "Uh huh."

He sputtered, unable to form words.

She patted him on one knee. "I'm going to work on my lesson plans. Now that I've met my students, I want to make a few corrections. Amp up some details and give them more of a challenge. I'll be in my room. It's right across the hall from Dresden. Are you in the room Luc used to use?"

"No. I kept my old room. I couldn't go in there after he moved away."

"Why? Did Luc ask you not to?"

"Nothing like that. I just didn't feel... You know. Worthy."

Hahlibeth took his hands and met his gaze. "Luc gave this house to you. Not to any of the others. Not even to Senth, and he formally adopted him." She squeezed and let go. "You are far more worthy than you think."

She went up the steps, and the sound of a door clicking came to him.

Kam was right. Brinn needed to get back to work. Luc had said the same thing. Stop twisting the memories of the past like worry beads and create new memories.

He had to find a way to break through the emotional ice surrounding Dresden and help her create new memories too.

Time to get back to business. Put the failures of his past behind him and do what Luc had drilled into him.

Focus on here. Focus on now.

Tomorrow, first thing. He'd start again.

Dresden might never love him the way he loved Luc, but if Brinn could be good enough, he could give her the life she deserved.

All he had to do was get out of his own way long enough to do it.

Okay, maybe he was reading more into it. But maybe not #MMRomance #AcademyRomance #MFRWhooks

A Divided Heart #MMRomance #SciFi #WriteLGBTQ

In this excerpt from A Divided Heart, Brinn and Kam confront unresolved tension after Kam arrives under the pretense of an official inspection from the Academy. Brinn maintains a careful distance, unwilling to let Kam see past his defenses, yet minor details betray the deeper emotions beneath the surface. Their conversation centers on Dresden, a young girl in Brinn's care. Both men struggle with mixed signals and confusion over past connections that neither acknowledges. Through their clipped dialogue and guarded interactions, the friction between them emerges, highlighting how misunderstandings and pride continue to hinder the openness they truly desire.

Kam POV:

Once they were out of sight, Brinn glared at Kam. "Is this an official inspection?"

"The Academy does require a check-in, and since I wanted to tell you about the board meeting, I said I'd oversee it."

"As you can see, we have things under control." Brinn jammed his arms across his chest.

The tension in Brinn's posture had eased when he'd been interacting with Dresden about the mowt, but now it returned, full force.

"She seems really sweet." Kam adjusted his collar. "I'm glad for her. And for you."

"Why would you be glad for me?"

"Because you need to get back to work. I think helping this little girl might do it for you."

"Just what do you mean by that?"

Why was Brinn so touchy about everything? And what had Kam said now?

"Look," Brinn headed for the door, and Kam followed. "Thanks for telling me about the meeting. Don't worry. We'll take care of your mowt. Send a text when you're back and we'll bring him to you." Brinn opened the door.

"Thanks." He stuck out his hand, and Brinn shook it. "See you in a couple days."

Kam hadn't even gotten off the front steps before the door slammed. Okay, not a full slam, but more than a quiet close. The kind of close when unwanted company finally left. Halfway between good-riddance and don't-come-back.

Could Brinn not let down his guard for one minute? No matter how many times or how many ways Kam found to be in the man's circle, Brinn remained indifferent.

Shutting Kam out.

No doubt Kam was reading more into Brinn's actions than he needed to.

But, knowing Brinn, maybe not.

Brinn POV

Brinn caught the door before it slammed. He might be irritated, but he didn't want Kam to notice it. Still, it closed hard.

What was he worrying about? Kam was clueless anyway.

With that constant stony-faced expression of his, who could tell? No doubt there was more going on beneath the surface.

Why should he even think about the man? It wasn't like they had anything going on. They'd had a few nights together after completing a huge project. That was it. They'd each been too wrapped up in other projects to continue the relationship. Hadn't they?

So why did his heart race every time he and Kam were in the same room? It wasn't like Kam had any interest. The man found every tiny reason to be in Brinn's business. Questioning his motives. Asking him questions. Finding fault with his answers.

Like coming all the way out here to tell him about a meeting. Come on. No, Kam was checking up on him. Of all the nerve.

Okay, could be reading more into that than it was worth.

But, knowing Kam, maybe not.

Excerpt: Door slam: halfway to good-riddance and don't-come-back #SciFi #WriteLGBTQ #MFRWhooks

A Divided Heart

In a school filled with hackers and thieves, how do you trust your heart?

The Thieves' Guild Academy teaches three things. Honor above profit. Skill above chance. Family above all. So when the Academy decides to turn away an alien child who's too unruly to train, Professor Brinn Halin intercedes. Despite the warnings of his handsome ex, the Headmaster, he fosters the precocious four-year-old girl.

Academy Headmaster Kam Zavala oversees a school full of trainee thieves and hackers, and he's used to their tricks. This latest student, a headstrong but brilliant little girl, has gone beyond a simple hack. Her work threatens to implode the ancient Academy itself. As a disaster of epic proportions unfurls, Kam must take action.

But when the child's breach uncovers a deeper, more insidious hack, the two master thieves must work together. They have a second chance to save the child, the Academy, and restore their newfound love. The question is, will they trust their well-honed instincts, or follow their long-divided hearts...

An MM second chance sci-fi romance set in the Thieves' Guild Academy

Excerpt: Door slam, halfway to good-riddance and don't-come-back #SciFi #WriteLGBTQ #MFRWhooksIn this scene, Kam had gone to Brinn's household to inform him of a meeting Brinn had missed, but he was also checking up on the little girl Brinn is fostering. Each man has feelings for the other, but neither will bend enough to be honest about his feelings. I'll let this excerpt speak for itself.

Brinn glared. "Is this an official inspection?"

"The Academy does require a check-in, and since I wanted to tell you about the board meeting, I said I'd handle it."
