Not all Christmases are cheery and bright, but the holiday is what you make it. The book A Romance for Christmas features a heroine who’s lost her husband, and has only her little girl at the holiday. What Christmas is for her is a time of giving selflessly. She sacrifices to provide for her child. When someone gives to her, it changes her entire perception of what Christmas is.

In my life, when the holidays don’t turn out the way I expect, sometimes it’s because I didn’t let others know what my expectations were. With that thought in mind, here’s my list of what Christmas is, good and bad.

A Paper Christmas Tree from A Romance for Christmas

What Christmas is…

  • having six strings of lights, and not one light bulb that will turn on.
  • unpacking ornaments and recalling the story and person behind each one.
  • that dazed feeling you get when you realize you forgot to prepare a dish for a dinner party — and you’re scheduled to leave with it in five minutes.
  • writing cards to friends you hadn’t thought about for too long.
  • getting a letter from relatives who went everywhere and did everything and wondering how in the world they managed to find the time and the money.
  • shopping for gifts and clothes for a needy child.
  • aching feet and knees from standing in lines everywhere you go.
  • playing Secret Santa at work, and seeing the gift you chose make a difference to a co-worker.
  • driving slowly through the neighborhood oohing and ahhing at lights.
  • the feeling of pride as you watch the town’s annual holiday parade.
  • hugging friends, visiting family, calling to say Merry Christmas to everyone far away.
  • cold winds blowing, a wet mist, snow, lazy smoke rising from chimneys, the smell of a pine fire.
  • watching your child perform in the school pageant and trying not to laugh when one of the reindeer antlers you sewed onto the costume falls off.
  • reading T’was the Night Before Christmas to a little one.
  • tears in your eyes when you hear the familiar carols of your childhood.
  • the lump in your throat when everyone in the audience stands at the first notes of Handel’s Messiah Chorus.
  • hearing again the wonderful story of the Holy Child’s birth.
  • the hope and the joy and the love of God, giving His only begotten Son so that we may live forever.
  • writing a list like this for dear friends like you.

Like most people, I like dog videos. I watched one recently about a pup with wheels for his front legs that showed a happy little puppy playing for the first time with other dogs. Who wouldn’t smile at that? I was thinking how many years old the dog was in people years, when it hit me that just as dogs measure years differently from people, authors also measure it differently from most folks.

We have contracts with publishers that measure in years (or in some cases, decades). If you have a three-year contract, your book’s publishing rights wouldn’t revert to you until three years had passed. I would see that as a book year of three to one. A five-year contract would be a book year of five to one. Make sense?

Which means I’ve waited two book years to bring out my latest books on my own, but in author years, that’s a total of eleven years. What!?

When I wrote At the Mercy of Her Pleasure and For Women Only back in 2004, they were published by Liquid Silver Books. LSB was good to me. They gave me my first chance at being an author, and I took that chance and ran with it. I gave them three Tales of the Chosen books, one each in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Then in 2009, I released Surrender Love with Loose Id. It was a huge hit. I considered moving the Tales of the Chosen books over there, but decided against it. I was interested in self-publishing by that time. I wanted to release those on my own.

However, I did move At the Mercy of Her Pleasure and For Women Only to Loose Id in 2010. The books did well, but I wanted to go in a different route, and I couldn’t do that with either Liquid Silver Books or Loose Id.

Why? I wanted to stop writing erotic / erotica and write mainstream sweeter romance and science fiction. My publishers weren’t interested in those kinds of books. Erotic romance was the holy grail when I began publishing back in 2004. It was selling like umbrellas in monsoon season. Eleven years later, like most products, the market is glutted, and it’s harder to spot quality. I decided to launch on my own, and in 2013, founded Romance Lives Forever Books to publish the kinds of stories I wanted to write. My style? Sweet scifi romance with a kick.

The new versions of At the Mercy of Her Pleasure and For Women Only are the stories of my heart, told the way I want to tell them. With all the grit and heart and humor, but without all the sex. Is there still steam? You betcha, but the bedroom action (or up against the wall action, depending on the hero *wink*) takes place “off the screen.” So while it took me only two book years to get this set out to you the way I like it, it’s been eleven long years in author time. I hope you enjoy them.

Meet the frenemies from Bringer of Chaos #scifi @kayelleallen

Frenemies. Forever.

Two enemy warriors: one human, one immortal. Different in belief, alike in spirit, marooned together on an alien world.

Imprisoned and in isolation over a year without food or water, the immortal Pietas survives. Though broken in body, his intellect and will are intact, thanks to Six, the special ops warrior who captured him, but kept him sane. The warrior had no hand in his deprivation and, like Pietas, was betrayed by his own kind. When Pietas is abandoned on an alien world with nothing but his honor–and Six–he must find and rejoin other immortal exiles. After centuries of war, Pietas detests humans and kills them on sight, but he is too damaged to continue on his own. Though he despises needing help, he allows Six to nurture and restore him to full strength, and then accompany him. As they cross the planet together on foot, the immortal begins to wonder if he has found his first human friend, or if Six is loyal only because Pietas could keep the others from tearing him to shreds. This human will either be his closest living friend, or the one whose betrayal will trigger all-out vengeance by the most powerful immortal ever born.

Immortal. Warrior. Outcasts. Traitors took everything. Except their honor.

Imagine you live on a world with triple suns. Each morning you see a binary pair and a single star, and your world orbits the three of them. That means triple sunlight. Sound like scifi? No one believed such a set up until Hubble found HD131399.

Triple Suns

Imagine life on a world where triple suns rule the solar system. For one thing, during part of the year, as the single sun sets, a binary pair rises. Your day, no matter how many hours long, or what shift you worked, shines a bright sun in the sky.

During other parts of the year, feel a bit deprived of sun? And how much SPF (sun protection factor) does a world with triple suns need? SPF 1000 anyone?

If you had seasonal affective disorder, the sun-days make for awesome sun-filled days of bliss! But the rest of the year, not so great. Training for a trip there means spending time at the North Pole — or at least close. My husband was raised in Anchorage AK, so long summer days are no stranger to him.

Triple Suns? What SPF is that? #scifi #science @kayelleallen
Source: Hubblesite.org

According to the HubbleSite news, a team of astronomers led by the University of Arizona has directly imaged with the SPHERE instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope the first planet ever found in a wide orbit inside a triple-star system. The orbit of such a planet had been expected to be unstable, probably resulting in the planet being quickly ejected from the system. But somehow this one survives.

Research, Research, Research

Triple Suns? What SPF is that? #scifi #science @kayelleallen

Creating a believable world means research. Articles like this provide a good look at alien planets, and give me ideas for worlds to create. A world with triple suns exists outside the Tarthian Empire, in the Colonies of Man. Tour the major worlds in the Empire with the free book Tarthian Tour Company Top Stops.

In Top Stops, you’ll discover which planet the Terraformers Circle of Fellowship created first. You’ll discover which planets harbor mysterious ruins known as the “Gates of Life.” Do the ruins point to visitation by aliens, or settlement by common ancestors? The powerful Thieves’ Guild rules on at least one world. Visit Sanity IV — a planet torn apart, harvested to build new worlds. All roads lead to Tarth, the Empire’s capitol and shining star… plus much more.

Whether you love seeing the background of how science fiction worlds are built, or just enjoy a fun read set on different planets, Tarthian Tour Company Top Stops is for you. This book is available exclusively to members of the Romance Lives Forever Reader Group.
