About Kayelle Allen

Kayelle Allen writes stories with immortal gamers and warriors who purr. She is the author of multiple books, novellas, and short stories, a US Navy veteran, and has been married so long she's tenured.

Who doesn’t love a dragon, one of the fiercest of monsters we’ve created across world cultures? How did they become such a universal threat in the minds of man? I particularly love David E. Jones’s take on how this monster came to be in his book, An Instinct for Dragons. Jones says that our primate ancestors combined a fear of large cats, birds and snakes in our evolving minds to construct an image of the worst predator. Take a look at a dragon and tell me you don’t see a little of each animal.
Whether or not Jones’s controversial claims are true, the fact that our ancestors struggled to survive against the worst of circumstances was an everyday reality. Hell, we’re still struggling to survive in our own ways. The monsters we battle are both fictitious and genuine, and they have evolved throughout time based on our creative and terrified psyches.

Dragons Through History…

Down through history, humans have invented numerous monsters to provoke fear in the name of controlling others. Take child-rearing for example. ‘Big Bad Wolf’ stories such as Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs are still told today. We tell children these terrifying stories to teach them about the dangers of life or to ensure they stay out of mischief. And we twist our need to control in some of the most warped of ways. Santa Claus, a jolly old elf, is meant to bring happiness with his annual gift drop off. However, many children would argue he’s a sadistic monster whose lap is capable of eating countless babes alive.

Today’s monsters are more real and have evolved due to our lack of control of evil corporations and school shootings. Terrorists are today’s ‘Big Bad Wolf.’ It’s unfortunate that we take protection against some monsters to the extreme, and if that means labeling certain cultures as monsters, so be it. While once we used sticks to protect each other against teeth and claws, countries now band together to combat our greatest fears with some of the worst weapons imaginable, making us equal to the monsters we fear.

Future Beasts…

What beasts are lurking in our future as technology progresses? Drones and artificial intelligence and cyber attacks, Oh my! These are not things to worry about for another day. We’re already venturing into this territory with self-driving cars, job loss to robots, election tampering, drone bombings and more.

And as speculative fiction authors, we’re in the business of making sure our monsters timeless. The best part of our profession.

New #SF for you - Terminal Feed a #SciFi #Cyberpunk #TechnoThriller by ML McIntosh #BookFair

There's a killer in the stream...

A cyberpunk detective story in space

Life in the asteroid belt is dominated by OnBoard- a neuroimplant that streams everything in real time to a universal social media network. OnBoard algorithms dictate what is seen and what is deemed "sensitive." The algorithm fails, however, when three young people activate asteroid crushers and walk into the machines while streaming. It looks like a suicide pact except for a strange data upload moments before each victim "logs off." Detective Victor Yasserian is the only person in the asteroid belt with no OnBoard neuroimplant to filter his perception. He's the only one who can enter the final victim's terminal feed and find out what really happened. But anything can happen in a corrupted feed, and Victor might just become the next victim.

Available at no cost

Bringer of Chaos Bundle 1

(Books 1-2 + bonus Lights Out) https://books2read.com/boc-bundle1

In this scene from Lights Out, Tornahdo has arrived at Enderium Six, site of the upcoming peace talks. He's there to insure security, and he's starting to figure out things aren't going to go as well as he'd planned.

Excerpt

From the ship's bridge, the space station Enderium Six filled every viewscreen. It occupied busy space-lanes outside the Terran Crescent. A steady stream of ships debarked, heading in different directions. Tornahdo's experience with peace talks was limited but something was...off.

Not a good sign for ending a war.

He reined in that thought. Nothing negative. Nothing sarcastic.

He must not allow emotion to claim victory after learning to suppress it. Didn't matter if his anti-emo chip was malfunctioning or not. When the chip worked, it controlled every aspect of his emotions. When it didn't, he controlled them. He'd done that all his life.

Besides, who but a rank newbie counted on military tech to save his butt?

The general would not be pleased with his current struggle after he'd fought to win her approval. He'd asked himself why he desired her admiration but pondering that question always gave him a headache. He just needed it.

Maybe because his new training permitted a single emotion in his heart. Hatred.

Hardest thing he did. Hating. Wasn't his nature. But ghosts followed orders.

He should not give credence to the niggling doubt that something, somewhere was missing. But grasping the meaning behind the worry? Futile.

He must not worry. He must permit no emotion other than hate.

Ultras controlled the emotions of others. The anti-emo chip blocked them. The chip kept him safe in battle, faithful as a good soldier.

He must not think of self. Only duty. And with duty came danger.

Only days before, the Ultra's High Council had elected Pietas ap Lorectic as Chancellor. They chose a bloodthirsty, narcissistic megalomaniac with delusions of godhood and a fabled hatred of humans, and then sent him to chair peace talks.

Typical.

Maybe that was why the corps shipped Tornahdo and his fellow ghosts to Enderium Six. To make sure the Ultras kept their word.

"You look puzzled, Master Sergeant." A worker tapped colored indicator lights.

Had Tornahdo let his emotions slip or had the chip malfunctioned again? He brushed at lint on his uniform, stalling while he thought of a good excuse. "Odd so many ships are leaving. I thought I'd see arrivals."

"If anyone was arriving you would."

"We're the sole inbound ship?"

"That's right. We're touching down to land your party, load as many civilians as possible, and then we're gone too."

His throat tightened. "They're evacuating the station."

"Yes."

Some peace talks.

When the Ultras found out they'd been lied to these so-called talks would renew the war. So far, his luck with duty stations was holding steady at zero.
