From Origin of Pietas

In this scene, Pietas, who is grievously ill and unable to fend for himself, has asked the human, Six, to go find the other immortals, but he's refused. How dare a lowly human defy him?

Excerpt

"How can you not do this, Six? What if my family and the council members are in the same shape I was in? Trapped, helpless, and injured?"

"No, no, and no." Six sat cross-legged by the fire, filet knife in hand, scraping scales off a fish. The fire sparked as the scales hit. "I'm not looking for your people. Look," he gestured at him with the knife, "you promised not to kill me. Not them. And to clarify, when it comes down to who ain't killing who, I promised not to kill you. Them? They're another story."

A hint of heat tingled against Pietas's face, and then a deeper warmth. Were his empathic senses returning, or was that the fire? "You are afraid." It sounded more accusatory than he'd intended.

Six glared at him. "Of course I am! You think I'm an idiot? I'm the only human on Sempervia. You know what a bunch of Ultras are gonna do if a human walks into camp? Nope." He spread his hands, the dead fish flopping as he did. "Not going. You get better, and I'll go with you, but I ain't going alone."

"I can't believe you."

"Sorry to disappoint." In one slice, he split the fish and then gutted it. He tossed the guts into the flames.

"You evince no sorrow whatsoever."

Six speared him with a dark look. "Evince? That some swear word in your language?"

"It's standard Etymis everyone speaks, ghost. It means to express. Empaths read the emotions that others evince."

"Fine. I don't evince any sorrow. Not one bit sorry about not taking on such a harebrained mission. Look what happened to the last one I accepted." He threaded the fish onto a long stick. "I might be dead, but I'm an animated dead, thank you. I intend to stay that way."

Pietas shut his eyes, jaws clenched. If he could heal faster by focusing anger, he'd have shot straight to good-as-new.

While Six worked on a second fish, Pietas considered what other tacks to try. The ghost was all about duty. "I'm accustomed to obedience from my men."

Six's mouth twisted into a wry grin. "Two things I'm starting to regret right now." He continued scraping the fish.

Pietas prompted him. "Such as?"

"One, that I didn't go AWOL when I heard about the mission to capture you."

Curiosity won over, and Pietas broke the silence. "And the second?"

Six looked him straight in the eyes. "That you got your voice back."

Luc Saint-Cyr broke up with Wulf a few weeks earlier, and today, everyone has asked Luc how he's handling it. He's the wealthiest, most influential man in the entire Empire and the fact he "can't keep a lover" is big news on the media. After a full day of fending off questions, he is not in a fit mood to talk to anyone.

He's Home After a Bad Day

Luc slumped in the back of his hoversine, putting off the inevitable, because as bad as it felt being dumped, pity made things worse. All the oh-poor-Luc-how-are-you-doing questions made him want to rip heads off people. How did they think he was doing? He went home alone every night and faced the same four walls with no one inside them but himself and his android servants. As much as he appreciated them, the androids didn't love him.

Apparently, neither had Wulf Gabriel.

His driver swung open the door.

Luc stepped out and straightened his coat. While James docked the vehicle with the rest of the fleet, Luc trudged to the railing. Atop the Nizamrak Building, over two hundred stories above ground, he drew in the crisp evening air of autumn. He let it all out, lifting his face to the night sky.

A chilled breeze, heavy with the scent of rain, blew up the sheer sides of the building and buffeted his skin. To the east, a low boom of thunder began and rumbled overhead, threatening storms. A sleepliner docking at the starport to the west vibrated the air, its roar muffled. Straight ahead, the white marble walls of the Conqueror's palace took up eight square city blocks and reflected as much light as the moon. Tarth City spread around it, a splendor of lights ablaze all the way to the snow-capped mountains on the far horizon.

Closer in, Destine Pietan Stadium sent its bright glow upward, casting a white sheen against flat clouds. Vehicles streamed in one portico and out the other. He recalled his assistant saying a rock group managed by one of his companies was performing tonight. Iron Soul? Kumwhatmay? For the life of him, he could not say.

Thomas Gabriel Stadium, he refused to look toward. Named in honor of Wulf's late father and built at Luc's personal expense, the state of the art sports complex had been presented to Wulf as a gift for their fifth anniversary, three weeks ago. Days before they broke up.

Outrageous headlines screamed his colossal failure in every language in the Empire. He'd built that place to underscore the legacy of a dear friend, but the media made Luc look like a clueless chump. Perhaps that's all he was.

He gripped the handrail and braced himself against it, arms stiff, head down. Up here, the hustle and hubbub of the city and the whoosh of traffic faded into the background. No matter how late he worked, when he returned, the empty penthouse taunted him with memories.

He pushed himself away from the railing and plodded toward the Loft.

A human got over old lovers and fell in love again. He, well accustomed to the brevity of mortal relationships, should do the same. So why did it feel like the weight of the empire crushed his chest?

Luc was Sempervian. Immortal.

Wulf was human. Mortal.

Luc would get over the loss in time, wouldn't he? If there was anything a Sempervian had plenty of, it was time.

I named the Nizamrak Building after my friend and mentor, the late author Barbara Karmazin. Nizamrak is Karmazin backward. BK, as she was affectionately known, loved the idea of having a site named after her. When my son Jamin created a print of the building, she was delighted.

It was always in my mind that the letters in Nizamrak were an acrostic, but I didn't know what they represented. When I wrote A Stolen Heart, I learned the meaning. A group of toddlers in a day care had been killed in "friendly fire" and Luc ( or "Cyr" as he was known in that life) was responsible. He never got over finding their tiny bodies, nor did he forgive himself. How could such a thing happen? You'll have to read A Stolen Heart to find out, but this incident had far reaching consequences and changed the course of many lives. The children's names were Nazeeya, Ida, Zahir, Addison, Makenna, Rayner, Amris, and Keagan. This is not the only thing to bear some aspect of their names, and because their deaths occurred over twelve thousand years ago, there is no telling how many ways the names have been used. But no matter what Luc does to honor them, he cannot free himself of the guilt he feels.

Tradestandard labor laws require employers to provide living quarters to employees near the place where they work. Exceptions are available (for example, in Her Crystal Clear Truth, Shohn Lexius lives elsewhere yet has her office in the Nizamrak Building. Luc Saint-Cyr's penthouse is the Building's top three floors.

The two-hundredth floor (Suite 20000) is vacant by design to provide privacy and security for the Loft. The Loft (Luc Saint-Cyr's penthouse) supports a full parking deck for his fleet of cars, and an entertainment facility. The penthouse occupies the top three floors. Private living and sleeping quarters take up most of the top floor, and provide space for the rooftop pool. The rooftop also has weather and privacy shielding.

Because of its design and height, the Nizamrak Building is equipped with anti-terrorism devices and the highest security idBot can provide. Repulsor technology prevents aircraft from approaching, eliminating the need for traditional blinking lights required on tall buildings. Failsafes turn on the lights in case of power failures or emergencies.

Discrete express elevators run to the penthouse, including one solely for vehicles and delivery. A separate, stacked elevator system transports passengers rapidly to various sections of the building. An industrial elevator system handles delivery. Private parking for those qualified is housed underground. The Tube (the Tarth City tube train) makes scheduled stops. The Nizamrak Building is one of the few tall buildings into which the tube is not permitted to run. All transportation (except Luc Saint-Cyr's private fleet) is underground. This gives the black-glass fronted building a sleek appearance. It is wider at the base than at the top.

Aware Luc will be gone most of the day, Izzorah asks if he can help.

Excerpt Surrender Love

A slow smile crossed Luc's face. "I may need a long, hot, sudsy shower and then help getting dry afterward."

A tender ache had Izzorah squirming in his seat. He offered a not-so-innocent smile. "We had that kind of shower before breakfast."

"Yes, we did." The man trailed a fingertip up Izzorah's arm, causing him to flush with heat. "But between now and then, I intend to work up a sweat. I'm going to need another one."

Izzorah squirmed again, spreading his legs farther apart.

"And then I'll need help to dress. Tuxedo affair. I'll teach you how to fasten everything. It's complicated. We may have to take everything off and put it back on a few times so you can practice."

He rose as Luc did and leaned across the table. He gripped Luc's robe to pull him close, deepening their kiss. The table dug into his thighs.

McDoth's return with milk and coffee broke them apart.

Izzorah's cheeks flamed.

Luc reseated himself, a self-satisfied smile on his gorgeous face.

Biting into his lower lip, Izzorah resisted the urge to cast breakfast aside and feast on Luc instead.

The android poured more coffee and left.

The size of Luc's dark hands as they wrapped the white mug brought back memories of the night before. Those hands had held him, turned him, lifted him. Loved him. Izzorah had given himself over in complete trust. He'd rested in Luc's strong arms. Those loving hands had bathed him, soaped his chest and shampooed his hair. Those same hands had dried him, lifting strands of his hair with patient fingers as he blew it dry.

His throat tightened as heat rose within.

This book has been out of print since 2014, and returns in an expanded edition with new scenes (almost 15k words) but the same tender love story and noble young hero. Surrender Love will be available in print and KU.

In this scene, we get to see the almost magic way Izzorah processes scents. It is literally his superpower. He understands what each layer of scent means and can determine from scent alone which direction a person is going in making a decision. It's morning, and Izzorah wakes in Luc's house after being rescued from a bad situation. Luc had given him a handkerchief earlier, and Izzorah finds it on the floor near the bed.

The Smell of Pain

Izzorah brought Luc's handkerchief to his nose and inhaled the scent.

No cologne. That was all Luc. Izzorah's claws came out.

Wait. What was this? He drew in the scent again and puzzled over the mixtures. Bittersweet chocolate hid behind the musk of desire and tang of kai peppers. The peppers he understood. That signified risk, and no man got as rich as Luc without that. But the bittersweet... Izzorah sneezed to clear his nose and drew in the fragrance again. The bittersweet meant heartbreak, regret, loss. Yet this went deeper than Izzorah had learned to expect for the breakup Luc had gone through. The guys in Kumwhatmay had been through those. Plenty.

This was richer. Another scent rode behind it, as faint as smoke on a high wind: mint. By itself, it meant amusement. It didn't belong with bittersweet except in human chocolates.

Izzorah rubbed the cloth between fingers and thumb; it was smooth, clean. Izzorah shook out the cloth, scrunched it up and pressed it to his nose again. Bittersweet chocolate and mint, but not the kind that came from a spill of ice cream or sticky candy. This had a human aspect to it. He had no name for the scent. He'd never smelled the combination before.

The scent had faded and had a bit of Izzorah's own smell now, but there was more. Izzorah sneezed again and drew in another deep sniff. Lavender. Not soap. Human soaps added their own chemical undertone, and it had no alcohol the way cologne did. This scent came from deep within Luc.

Other Kin never understood how Izzorah did this and he'd stopped trying to explain. A single cousin had the same level of ability.

Izzorah hadn't noticed the scent when he was with Luc. After rubbing the cloth to warm it, Izzorah gave another sniff. This was pain. Not injury pain. Emotion. Inner pain. Luc hid it and it went so deep it lingered.

Lavender, bittersweet chocolate and mint. Heartbreak, loss, regret, amusement, inner pain, combined in a man as strong as Luc... Perhaps he found life amusing, yet it also hurt him. No. That did not go deep enough to explain this. Maybe he felt like an outsider looking in. Alien.

Like him.

But it was more than Luc feeling as if he had no right to belong.

Izzorah clutched the handkerchief to his chest.

"Oh, Luc! I will find a way to eliminate your pain, whatever caused it. I promise. Because if anyone has a right to belong, it's you."

When he unfolded the cloth, in one corner, a mark of white-on-white showed. He brought it up close to his face and ran a fingertip across it. The design was sewn into the cloth. Having no word for such a thing, he sniffed the spot and then licked it. No taste, but his stomach picked that moment to growl, so he stuffed the cloth into a pocket and went to find breakfast.
