In this scene, due to an injury Izzorah suffered previously, he is taking pain medication. It makes him a little high. He and Luc have ventured outside towards a long black hoversine, and a thousand of Izzorah's fans are waiting. When he and Luc appear, a cheer goes up.

Excerpt

Izzorah hung back and Luc waited beside him. "They're all friends, Izzorah. This is a party. Wave." Luc raised his hand and Izzorah lifted his.

The cheer was deafening.

Izzorah smiled, but his chest rose and fell rapidly, his lips a faint blue.

"Relax, Izzorah. Focus on me. Deep breath in. Let it all out."

Izzorah sucked in a gulp of air, blew it out.

"Good. Now, do it again. In... out. You're doing well. Wave again."

Izzorah did so. "Wow." He rubbed his eyes. "This pain pill is making me see things. The sky is full of colors."

"You're not hallucinating. Those are balloons. Someone's handing them out."

"Someone's handing out balloons?" Izzorah sounded incredulous. "Are you sure? That's crazy."

"Don't let it rattle you. It's part of the circus that is my life, although, thankfully, there aren't usually balloons."

For adults who like to color! A free sci-fi romance coloring book #Coloring #SciFi #Romance

I’m sharing giveaways that I developed with my son Jamin, who’s a graphic designer. Do you like to color? You are in luck. Together, Jamin and I created coloring books for my various books and characters. You can download seven of them for free right on this website and color it yourself.

The first, Unstoppable Heroes and Heroines, features characters found in almost every one of my books. The Antonello Brothers has characters found in At the Mercy of Her Pleasure and For Women Only.

Peril — the Immortal’s Game is a unique coloring book. It has characters but also a maze and multi-sided dice to color.

Pietas — the Bringer of Chaos has over a dozen dragons. Pietas dreams about dragons and their symbolism appears in his stories. In a future book, he will bond with one. Do you like flowers and butterflies? There are two coloring books that showcase those.

Why Coloring is Good for You

Anxiety and stress is controlled by the amygdala, a center of the brain that deals with motivation and emotion. The act of creating with color calms this portion of the brain. This part of the brain also controls the “fight or flight” response. Intense focus on a simple activity, like coloring, can calm the body and brain.

When people get together to color, the activity relieves stress, improves mood, promotes socialization, and provides an outlet for self-expression. In seniors, it can also improve dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

How odd that an activity once considered just a means to keep kids busy has become such a valued commodity in the mental health community. Coloring exercises both sides of the brain, because it uses logic as well as creativity. That adds value in terms of cognitive health and can assist with problem-solving.

But one big reason is because it’s fun to do! How long has it been since you sat down and colored? What’s stopping you? If it’s that you don’t have anything to color, I’ve got a fix for that. I offer seven free coloring books. Click, download, and print.

Color It Yourself

You can pick up inexpensive boxes of crayons and take yourself back to your childhood. I have several sets of colored pencils and pens. My favorite type is gel because the colors are so rich and bright. The Eparon gel pen set has 40 unique colors. If you have Amazon Prime you can get them without shipping fees. There are 4 standard coloring pens, 6 neon, 5 mixed pastels, 5 solid pastels, 10 glitter, and 10 metallic. They are acid-free, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly. My advice is to get this set in addition to another. You’ll see suggestions for other types on my coloring book download page.

“Yo, soldier. Saving humans is not your job.” Excerpt from Lights Out #SciFi #MFRWhooks #FreeBook

In this scene, Tornahdo is reeling from the death of two of his compadres in the Ghost Corps. Although they were no friends of his, he had tried to protect them. The following takes place early in the morning, not more than 24 hours after Tornahdo had been disciplined for sacrificing his life to protect humans. If the military can bring you back to life, how is that not a good thing? Saving humans is not his job, as he is constantly reminded. He's to kill immortals, and that's all he's to do.

But what are they fighting for if not to protect humanity?

Excerpt from Lights Out

Standing at attention in the general's office at oh-three-hundred, Tornahdo maintained his silence. The smell of burning flesh clung to his clothing. Wails of the dying rang in his ears. He kept his gaze fixed on the star map opposite while the general paced.

"Master Sergeant." A civilian coat covered her. Her pink pajama bottoms and fuzzy slippers didn't paint as intimidating an image as her medal-covered uniform, but her voice still held command. "Can you not stay out of trouble for one full day?"

He knew better than to answer.

"You intervened for a human." She stopped pacing and turned to him. "Again."

"Yes, ma'am."

"And it wasn't your single death you caused this time. It was the death of two ghosts."

Not technically. Morally, maybe, but he'd tried to spare them. "Yes, ma'am."

"Irreversible death. Ultras don't come back from fire. Ghosts with Ultra blood don't either. They died because of you."

"Ma'am, they died because Ravenstongue is a certifiable crackpot who never deserved the uniform, let alone a weapon." The words hadn't left his mouth before he knew he'd overstepped. Why couldn't he keep his mouth shut like he'd been told his entire life?

The look of disdain on the general's face said far more than words. She resumed pacing, but then stopped again, not facing him. "That may be true, Master Sergeant." Her voice had gone quiet, all but gentle. "But that's not your call. Ravenstongue is being dealt with."

"Thank you, ma'am."

"Don't thank me." Her gaze snapped to his. "You are not innocent. The bartender told us his side. According to him, you were trying to save him."

Same stuff. Different day. He took a deep breath. "Yes, ma'am."

"Do I hear annoyance in your tone, Master Sergeant?"

"Not my intention, ma'am."

"Didn't we have this discussion about humans?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Are you not tired of having it?"

Oh, for so many reasons. "Yes, ma'am."

She paced again. "The fire damage to the bar will be compensated out of Ravenstongue's salary." The general paused, slapped her hands behind her back and smiled. "And yours." She stared at him as if daring him to argue.

What would he spend it on? Why did they pay him? He could go nowhere and do nothing.

"Master Sergeant, if there were more than fifty ghosts, you'd be history."

Fifty? That was all they had?

How could fifty humans hope to defeat an army of nearly one million warriors who could never die?

“Humans? Equal? Not in my immortal lifetime.” #PietasFans #SciFi #MFRWhooks

The Ultra people are winning the war against humans, yet the Council insists on peace talks. All to grant humans a seat on the Council. Humans! No, what's best for humans is oppression, control, and if necessary, elimination. Pietas seethes with rage at the idea of human equality. They might have created Ultras, but the creation has far surpassed the creator.

Equality for humans? Never.

Humans die. Ultras are reborn, no matter how grievous the injury. Therefore, Ultras have no equals.

His people permit him no choice. He must attend insipid peace talks on Enderium Six and what's worse, be polite. To humans.

In this scene, Pietas has been betrayed and trapped, and now they're coercing him to enter a lifepod...

The leaders of his people gathered in sleep around Pietas, sealed inside their curved, steel stasis tubes.

He folded his arms. "Feast your eyes, vultures." He lifted his chin. "You think to imprison me? You think to bring me down like a hunted animal?" He indicated the other life-pods. "I will not cower before you. I will not bow. I will not kneel. I will not serve. I will never submit. Humans were made to be ruled, not by my people, but by me."

The silhouettes above him contrasted with the bright light behind them. One by one, they slipped away, until one remained.

"Fighting us accomplishes nothing." The disembodied voice echoed in the chamber. "Enter the pod, Pietas, or we'll siphon the air. You'll die."

"I'll revive. I've died countless times. I do not fear death. Death fears me."

"So be it. Since you're so set on dying, have it your way. I told you if you didn't cooperate, I would detonate the bombs within the hostages you took aboard your ship. See for yourself."

On the opposite wall, an image of his ship sparkled into life, and a bloom of light filled the screen. A mass of debris shot in all directions.

"Your crew has ceased to exist."

"That image is a farce. You would not dare to destroy the council's flagship, and you will not destroy the council. You are cowards. You lock us away in a barren room and threaten our people. This is why humans do not deserve freedom. You are worthless, miserable liars."

"Believe me, your crew is quite dead. The universe is a safer place for it."

"Untrue. It will never be safe for humans. Especially not for you."

In this scene from Lights Out, Tornahdo has arrived at Enderium Six, site of the upcoming peace talks. He's there to insure security, and he's starting to figure out things aren't going to go as well as he'd planned.

Excerpt

From the ship's bridge, the space station Enderium Six filled every viewscreen. It occupied busy space-lanes outside the Terran Crescent. A steady stream of ships debarked, heading in different directions. Tornahdo's experience with peace talks was limited but something was...off.

Not a good sign for ending a war.

He reined in that thought. Nothing negative. Nothing sarcastic.

He must not allow emotion to claim victory after learning to suppress it. Didn't matter if his anti-emo chip was malfunctioning or not. When the chip worked, it controlled every aspect of his emotions. When it didn't, he controlled them. He'd done that all his life.

Besides, who but a rank newbie counted on military tech to save his butt?

The general would not be pleased with his current struggle after he'd fought to win her approval. He'd asked himself why he desired her admiration but pondering that question always gave him a headache. He just needed it.

Maybe because his new training permitted a single emotion in his heart. Hatred.

Hardest thing he did. Hating. Wasn't his nature. But ghosts followed orders.

He should not give credence to the niggling doubt that something, somewhere was missing. But grasping the meaning behind the worry? Futile.

He must not worry. He must permit no emotion other than hate.

Ultras controlled the emotions of others. The anti-emo chip blocked them. The chip kept him safe in battle, faithful as a good soldier.

He must not think of self. Only duty. And with duty came danger.

Only days before, the Ultra's High Council had elected Pietas ap Lorectic as Chancellor. They chose a bloodthirsty, narcissistic megalomaniac with delusions of godhood and a fabled hatred of humans, and then sent him to chair peace talks.

Typical.

Maybe that was why the corps shipped Tornahdo and his fellow ghosts to Enderium Six. To make sure the Ultras kept their word.

"You look puzzled, Master Sergeant." A worker tapped colored indicator lights.

Had Tornahdo let his emotions slip or had the chip malfunctioned again? He brushed at lint on his uniform, stalling while he thought of a good excuse. "Odd so many ships are leaving. I thought I'd see arrivals."

"If anyone was arriving you would."

"We're the sole inbound ship?"

"That's right. We're touching down to land your party, load as many civilians as possible, and then we're gone too."

His throat tightened. "They're evacuating the station."

"Yes."

Some peace talks.

When the Ultras found out they'd been lied to these so-called talks would renew the war. So far, his luck with duty stations was holding steady at zero.

Ever get lost in a round room? #PietasFans #SciFi #MFRWhooks

In this excerpt, Pietas and the search party sent to find him have become lost and have walked for hours. When he realizes they're near a summit that will allow him to see the valley they searched for, he heads for it. Joss, the telepath and warrior he loves tries to keep him from going, insisting she has a better vantage point. Pietas suspects a trick.

Excerpt

"Joss. The truth this time."

While she studied him, he remained motionless. The gentle prod of her mind across his shields reminded him she'd seen his thoughts despite his best efforts. Or perhaps she'd allowed him to be aware. In the past, he'd noticed such intrusion during training but not outside it.

"Pietas, if you want to see the caldera from this point, I can't stop you, but once you see what's out there, you can't un-see it. I want to spare you the devastation until you've had a chance to see the good side. If I take you in through the pass, you can appreciate the true beauty of this place first. Maybe come up with a way we can make it work here. Survive."

Devastation.

According to Joss, half a million of his people lay in helpless cryosleep within lifepods on the other side of that hill. Over three thousand pods had been damaged beyond saving. The frozen immortals within them shattered.

A short hike above, the summit waited. In two short minutes he could see for himself. "How long would your route take us?"

"Less than a half hour."

Once more, the short distance to the actual summit drew his attention. How many steps?

"Pi?" Six nudged him. "Is that even a blink in the life of an immortal?"

"No, ghost, it's not." How grateful he was for this man. "Besides, I'm patient."

His sister scoffed. "You?" Turning to the twins, she pointed at Pietas. "That is not my brother."

No, he was not. He was far better. His sister could see the change. Why would she not accept it? Resisting the urge to respond with cynicism, Pietas shut his mouth.

He indicated the route Joss wanted to take. "Let's go your way."

"Thank you for listening to me." Joss took Pietas by the hand, reached up, and dragged a fingertip down the cleft in his chin. "This place is stunning. I hate that so much of it will be spoiled by our being here."

"Why? Has Mother released environmental impact studies?"

"No, she--" The look Joss sent his way resembled pity. "You'll see. Not far now."

"You've been saying 'not far' for hours. Did I not teach you to mark trails?"

"I'm sorry, Pietas. It won't happen again."

Oh, but it would. She wouldn't mean for it to happen, but it would. He'd tried for centuries to teach her how to find her way, to no avail. He kissed her cheek and drew her into his arms, savoring her warmth.

"Joss." He placed his mouth near her ear. "You couldn't find your way out of a round room with one door."

She jerked up her head and looked at him, eyes wide.

"And I adore you for it."
