After a day full of drama, all Luc wants is a shower and some wine. Not necessarily in that order. (To portal is to instantly transport; think "beam me up.")
Why are you in my shower?
Inside his room, Luc shut the door, activated locks and set full privacy settings. It took three seconds to choose a bottle of Skovron Blush '37. Light, delicate and sweet. He opened the bottle to let the wine breathe while he set about stripping. Everything but the shoes went into the recycler, although he considered ditching those too. If his house-droids couldn't whisk them clean, he'd let them get rid of the shoes. Not his problem.
Luc chose a wineglass, poured, then carried it into the bathing area. After a sip, he set the glass on a marble countertop and slid open the smoky-gray glass door of the shower.
Pietas stepped into view, fully clothed. "I do not need a shower, thank you."
Luc snatched a towel and whipped it around himself. "My lord--" An explosive sigh burst from him. "What are you doing in my shower?"
"I wanted to see you."
"In the shower?"
With a flirty smile, Pietas leaned one shoulder against the wall. "You must admit, it is a good place to see you."
A headache shoved its way forward. "Not happening, Pietas."
"Spoilsport."
"Again, what are you doing here?"
"I portaled into your room and heard the door open, so I came in here, and--" He lifted his chin. "I am your king. I go where I please."
"I asked you not to portal here, my lord. My Deshai are home."
"Which is why--" With a groan, Pietas clenched his fists. "Only you would expect me to explain myself." He gestured toward Luc. "You explain. Where have you been? Are you showering because you're going out, or..." He trailed a look down Luc's length. "...going to bed?" He ended the question with a smile.
"Bed. Alone. I've dealt with drama for days." Luc picked up the wine and drank it in one gulp. "I need a refill." Without waiting for a response, he marched himself back to his room, retrieved the bottle and poured, then splashed wine into a second glass.
Drinking alcohol had no effect on Sempervians, but the act itself soothed. It offered tradition. Comfort. And when needed, a means of stalling while you decided how much truth you could afford to tell.
He offered the second glass.
His king lifted it, sniffed, sipped. "This is good. From one of your wineries?"
"Yes. One of the Skovron locations." Luc swirled his wine, waiting until Pietas took another sip. "It's your sister's favorite."
Mouth twisting, Pietas set down his glass with a click.

The Alien Medic
Falling in love ruined Maxwell once. He refuses to let it ruin him again.
Maxwell Terry has spent his life as a doctor helping others, all while hiding his deepest secret from them. He knows firsthand the pain and terror that comes from falling in love, and he promised himself that he'd never make the same mistake again. But Garrett Twal, with his easy laugh and his charming smile, makes him want to break that promise.
Garret Twal has always been the biggest and strongest man in the room, and for as long as he can remember, he's used his size to protect and care for people. He'd care for the sweet doctor with the steady hands and the sad eyes too, if Maxwell Terry would just let him! Even if the man is clearly hiding something. And even if Garrett knows better than most the damage a traitor can do.
But Garrett and Maxwell don't have time to take it slow with each other. Their planet is lying in ruins, with poisonous storms raging through the air and pirates picking over its carcass. As their relationship heats up and the danger around them grows more intense, will they be able to hold on to each other or will their fears and their pasts tear them apart and doom their home?
With generous servings of hurt/comfort, secrets, and trust issues (and snarky Sebastian), The Alien Medic is the fourth book in Interspecies Alliances—a series best read in order about a galaxy torn apart by conflict and the men fighting to keep it together. Everyone gets HEAs once the series ends, but first, each novel follows its own couple with their own HFN ending on this epic space adventure.
Content Warning: emotional abuse that turns violent (the violence is brief), science fiction violence, references to war, refugees, crime, invading armies, brief body dysmorphia.

My characters may be found in multiple books in my story universe. Pietas images from Nik Nitsvetov Pietas cosplays.
In this scene, Izzorah is recalling a concert where he entertained as the drummer for the rock group Kumwhatmay.
Surrender Love
Izzorah cranked up the hot water and turned his back, head tilted down so it soothed the tension in his neck and shoulders. He lathered Kin shampoo into his pelt, a thick band of long fur covering the upper part of his chest above his nipples, up to the collarbone. Humans likened it to a lion's mane. He always hid his pelt beneath shirts, unwilling to bare his alien nature to fans. It was one thing for them to know he was Kin. Another to flaunt it.
He lifted his face to the water, rinsed everything and turned around again. While the fall of heated water soothed his back, his mind wandered to the past. At their last concert, he'd been tired. He was always tired, but that night had been extra hard. His chest had been hurting him again and it hurt to breathe. He'd psyched himself up by remembering a vid.
He had never seen the audience, but one time, Kory had found a vid of Kumwhatmay on Imperinet and downloaded it to Izzorah's player. It showed Izzorah's drum solo halfway through the show. About ten Praetorian guards had sat on the front two rows, all decked out in the black military uniforms of the Empress, clapping in unison.
To Izzorah's music. The beat of his drums. His drums.
Talk about knocking yours ears off. That cut them off at the base and threw them on the floor. He, Izzorah Ceeow, had played for Praetorian and hadn't even known it.
So the night of the last concert on Kelthia when he was too weary to stick out a claw, he pretended the whole audience was nothing but Praetorian. He'd played better than ever.
The audience had hooted and cheered and screamed. After his solo ended, the others tried to join him on cue, but the audience went crazy. Izzorah fumbled a drumroll, unsure what was happening. When he realized what they were chanting, it shocked him into flat-eared silence.
Humans repeated Izzy! Izzy! Izzy! which was pure out-and-out stellar, but his people, the Kin fans out there, had set up the sustained howl of a speerus kinthu—a spirit of pride. A call to the spirit of the people to come witness. Come judge. It was done so bad things didn't happen without being seen, or to celebrate a wedding, or a birth. Except on that night, you could hear the pride as well as smell it. Chills chased over him even now, prickling his pelt as if he were there.
The crowd was calling for his people to come and witness his song.
If he never beat another drum, he could die with his ears straight up.

One of the best ways to support authors is to buy their books. But what if you're short on cash and long on the need to read? Here are 10 easy ways you can support your favorite author.
- Take a selfie of yourself with their book and share it online.
- Visit their website.
- Request their book from the library.
- Send an "I'm a fan" email.
- Call or visit a local bookstore and request their book.
- Review their book.
- Nominate them for awards.
- Add their book to your BookBub or Goodreads "want to read" lists.
- Subscribe to their newsletter.
- When you finish a book, if you can part with it, share it in a "free trade library". Some coffeeshops have "Take a book, Leave a book" shelves.
If you can buy their books, see if they offer them direct to you. This might save you money and the author will keep a higher commission. Win-win!
I'm always looking for ways to support other authors. Let me hear your ways in the comments.

My characters may be found in multiple books in my story universe. Pietas images from Nik Nitsvetov Pietas cosplays.
In this scene, Luc and Izzorah have finished dinner, and retired to a living area nearby.
Luc had lived thousands of years. He was a master in the art of Sempervian Compulsion. He could seduce Izzorah and make him think it was all his idea. Izzorah already had a few drinks in him. He wouldn't even resist.
But what was the point of that? Luc wanted a relationship, not a romp. He wanted Izzorah to yield because he wanted to. No... he wanted Izzorah to be more than a partner. A true equal.
What Luc wanted, Luc got. In business, in war, in life, no one stood in the way. Not once Luc decided to pursue a thing.
But this was his precious Izzorah.
So now, Luc must wait, when what he wanted was to reach out... and take what so rightfully should belong to him.
Izzorah folded his hands before him, head down. Waiting, perhaps, for Luc to make the next move.
Luc took a step toward him, but placed himself beside Izzorah, facing the opposite direction. "You're a wonderful dinner companion."
"Thank you. I hope I didn't bore you with all that talk about home."
"Not at all. I find it...alien, but fascinating."
Izzorah said nothing.
Luc waited. A full minute passed with neither speaking.
Oh, screw this indecision! He should take the Kin to bed and be done with it. Luc knew he was going to. Why should he wait for the inevitable? No point in fighting the obvious. Izzorah wanted him. Luc wanted Izzorah. He should take him. Now.
But Luc's sensible side barred the way. He had promised. The Kin needed to know Luc respected him. Yes, Izzorah had committed himself, but it was still his move.
Luc must do the honorable thing. He shifted his weight, spreading his legs. It did nothing to ease the discomfort his arousal caused. Inner heat rivaled his craven desire for the wet friction of Kin fangs and rough tongue. Luc craved Izzorah's guileless eyes and smile, his artless desire to please. The innocence that personified him.
This young Kin could smell emotion. He had to know Luc burned. Why was he waiting? Or perhaps that was why. Had Luc frightened him with the intensity of his need? Perhaps Izzorah guessed what Luc wanted to do to him, take from him, and would run screaming in the other direction.
Instead, Izzorah took a step back and then set one foot between Luc's, looked up. "You told me when I was ready, to come to you." The emerald cat's eyes had gone wide. His smile faltered. "I'm ready. I know what I want. You."

In this scene, Shohn and Joe meet for dinner and to discuss how Shohn's company, idBot, can help Joe find the person he's looking for.
Excerpt
"What you tell idBot stays with idBot." Shohn tapped one manicured claw on the table. "Like lawyers and clergy. What you say to me I will share with no one."
"My father considered firestorms not as random incidents." Joe chewed his lower lip, his bright-blue gaze focused on Shohn. "Kin know when someone's lying, isn't that right?"
"Human scent gives them away. It's not impossible to lie to us without us knowing, but it is rare."
He leaned back, regarding her. "You'll know what I say is the truth, correct?"
What was he getting at? Did he plan to lie? Odd way to go about it, if so. "I would know whether you believed something was true."
"Okay." Joe squared his shoulders. "My father believed firestorms have a personal agenda."
She considered those words. "What you're saying is he thought the firestorms themselves were planning where to strike."
"Yes. I know it sounds crazy, but when you examine the evidence..." He sighed. "I don't mean to sound condescending, but you wouldn't understand. There are only a handful of people who would, and those few are all in the TCF. But they refused to take him seriously."
If Saint-Cyr could hear this, he would be cheering. Firestorms did indeed have their own agenda, but this was the first time anyone other than an immortal had recognized it.
Gaining Joe's trust might be the key to carrying out both her missions.

From Origin of Pietas
In this scene, Pietas, who is grievously ill and unable to fend for himself, has asked the human, Six, to go find the other immortals, but he's refused. How dare a lowly human defy him?
Excerpt
"How can you not do this, Six? What if my family and the council members are in the same shape I was in? Trapped, helpless, and injured?"
"No, no, and no." Six sat cross-legged by the fire, filet knife in hand, scraping scales off a fish. The fire sparked as the scales hit. "I'm not looking for your people. Look," he gestured at him with the knife, "you promised not to kill me. Not them. And to clarify, when it comes down to who ain't killing who, I promised not to kill you. Them? They're another story."
A hint of heat tingled against Pietas's face, and then a deeper warmth. Were his empathic senses returning, or was that the fire? "You are afraid." It sounded more accusatory than he'd intended.
Six glared at him. "Of course I am! You think I'm an idiot? I'm the only human on Sempervia. You know what a bunch of Ultras are gonna do if a human walks into camp? Nope." He spread his hands, the dead fish flopping as he did. "Not going. You get better, and I'll go with you, but I ain't going alone."
"I can't believe you."
"Sorry to disappoint." In one slice, he split the fish and then gutted it. He tossed the guts into the flames.
"You evince no sorrow whatsoever."
Six speared him with a dark look. "Evince? That some swear word in your language?"
"It's standard Etymis everyone speaks, ghost. It means to express. Empaths read the emotions that others evince."
"Fine. I don't evince any sorrow. Not one bit sorry about not taking on such a harebrained mission. Look what happened to the last one I accepted." He threaded the fish onto a long stick. "I might be dead, but I'm an animated dead, thank you. I intend to stay that way."
Pietas shut his eyes, jaws clenched. If he could heal faster by focusing anger, he'd have shot straight to good-as-new.
While Six worked on a second fish, Pietas considered what other tacks to try. The ghost was all about duty. "I'm accustomed to obedience from my men."
Six's mouth twisted into a wry grin. "Two things I'm starting to regret right now." He continued scraping the fish.
Pietas prompted him. "Such as?"
"One, that I didn't go AWOL when I heard about the mission to capture you."
Curiosity won over, and Pietas broke the silence. "And the second?"
Six looked him straight in the eyes. "That you got your voice back."

She's addictive
He can't touch her. But what if he kissed her just once...
To free his enslaved brother from a cruel master, Senth, an all-party-fun-and-games thief, must take on the hardest assignment of his life: stealing from the Empress. If he doesn't, his brother's life is forfeit.
To make matters worse, Senth has no choice but to work with NarrAy, a by-the-book rebel captain whose addictive pheromones could jeopardize the mission and destroy his will. When the unthinkable happens and NarrAy professes her love for him, Senth must decide if what he feels is real.
Can he trust this woman? If he loves her back, can he still save his brother? Or will he end up at the mercy of her pleasure forever...
◆If you like your heroines smart and your heroes smart-alecky, this book is for you. 😏
In this scene, Senth Antonello and NarrAy Jorlan have just met. She's considering whether to hire the professional thief to steal back the designs for a prototype her murdered parents designed. Because NarrAy is a Better, an enhanced human with addictive pheromones, she's not permitted to touch anyone skin-to-skin. Senth puts on gloves and prepares to shake her hand. All her life, she's been isolated from touch, so to risk touching is dangerous for them both.
Gentleman
NarrAy offered her hand. She'd practiced this with her father as a girl. "A gentleman doesn't try to overpower a lady's hand, NarrAy. But he isn't afraid to be firm either."
She held his gloved hand between both of hers. "I can see you're a gentleman, Mr. Antonello."
His cheeks reddened. "Just Senth, ma'am."
She squeezed Senth's hand. "And I'm NarrAy. Never Ms. Jorlan, nor ma'am. Not on this job. Understood?"
He met her gaze. "Does that mean you want me?" He blushed again and glanced down at their still-joined hands. "For the job, I mean."
She bit back a laugh. What an innocent. "So long as we're clear on who's in charge."
"When it comes to theft, I am. For everything else, you are, in every way."
He had no idea. But he had never once looked at her body. Maybe this red dress would be okay after all.
"Come sit." She gestured toward an adjacent room. "Let's talk business."
