With Pietas, the truth was often in what wasn't said as much as what was. "Then you hired some lackey to do it."

"A king has no need for lackeys." Pietas drew back a lock of silver hair and flipped it behind his shoulder. "I command soldiers. Or if needed, I ask a favor. Like I did you."

"You asked someone to kidnap this child for you, then you put her into the Guild and asked me to find her."

"I told you. I did not kidnap her."

"If you asked someone to do it, it's kidnapping!" He snapped the wineglass stem, stabbing his hand. He dropped the pieces and pressed a thumb against the cut. The blood staunched. The cut healed within seconds. "Don't skirt the truth. You thrust that child into danger to get what you wanted."

"Spare me the theatrics." Pietas flipped a hand. "The girl wasn't harmed."

"The Guild told her that her parents were dead. They isolated her! She's a Better. Are you aware what the Guild does to non-humans?"

"Betters are human."

"Not to the Guild."

"They are human." Pietas turned his back. "I should know. I designed them. Genetic manipulation is my role in this lifetime."

"As I said, not to the Guild. I rescued a HalfKin child today. They'd been locking him in a windowless room in the dark as punishment. They fed him from a bowl on the floor. He's three. Was that harmless?"

"That's barbaric." Pietas grimaced. "Why would the Guild do that?"

"Because he isn't human. Imagine what they'd do if they discovered what I am."

Hands behind his head, Joe lay on the bed. He couldn't sleep if he tried, so he hadn't bothered pulling down the sheets. Faint light from around the door cast a bit of light on the ceiling. Before long, that went out, and he found himself in darkness.

He pulled out his mobile and brought up Imperinet. "Search people," he told the device. "Basic background on Kin Shohn Lexius."

The unit made an answering ping. "Full name Lexius, Shohnahki, born 4624 on Felidae, Lexius Township, age forty-four years. Employed by idBot 4645. Volunteer at Kin Kids Healthcare. Do you require current address?"

"Think I've got that pretty well covered. What's her position at idBot?"

"Ms. Lexius is the Senior Liaison on the Lucsondis security team."

"What is Lucsondis?"

"Lucsondis is an umbrella company owned by Luc Saint-Cyr."

"Saint-Cyr?" Joe rubbed the tight spot between his eyes. Wasn't that just great? "Is there a civilian world equivalent of her position?"

"Comparative titles include Senior Vice President of Security, Senior Vice President of Security and Transport Division, Executive Director of--"

"Okay. I get it. She's powerful and she works for Saint-Cyr." Hadn't his father often lamented not being able to seek research grants outside the TCF? Saint-Cyr's interests in firestorms was a matter of public record. More specifically, in the crystals created during firestorms. "Okay, idBot. Is Ms. Lexius married or dating anyone?" He gritted his teeth, waiting for the answer.

"According to Idle Time Ezine, Ms. Lexius is not and has never been married. She is listed as number seven on a list of the ten 'Most Sought After Businesswomen of Tarth City.'"

And why did that give him such a feeling of satisfaction? Joe set aside his mobile.

So she worked for Saint-Cyr. What would it take to get Shohn to set up a meeting with the man? And if she did, what would it take to keep the TCF from firing him on the spot?

She might be helping him at Saint-Cyr's behest, or because of the research of Joe's father. Maybe even his own. After all, why would an executive that high up in the company take on a missing person case like his? And then bring him right into her own home?

What were her ulterior motives? Was she planning corporate espionage on Saint-Cyr's behalf? But how would she have known Joe would end up in a vulnerable position, the victim of a break-in?

Unless she set it up in order to gain access to him. Or had herself been the one in that room.

No. He'd felt the vibes. Definitely male.

If she was spying on him, why did she have to be so damned attractive?

Joe swallowed. He'd been right. He wouldn't sleep for a week.

Coming Home

In the private receiving chamber, I knelt before the king I hadn't seen in over two years, an ache in my knees and groin and back that four hours ahorse had burned into my muscle; and delivered the news of victorious battle I'd been dispatched to bring. When I finished, the sovereign master of Qarth and Kellindahr leaned back his tawny, lion-maned head to regard me with heavy lidded eyes.

I couldn't believe the luck of having caught Orix awake so late. He'd always been one to turn in early. Soft, his father used to say. I knew it for his love of bed play. My throat tightened with pleasure at the thought and I had to swallow, hard, to force it away. That we were alone amazed me even more. But war has a way of loosening rules, even in Qarth.

A wartime's ransom of jewels glittered on his hands as he reached for a bowl of golden Kellindahrii apples beside him. He bit into one and chewed.

I waited until the apple reached his smiling mouth again, and then I rose, moved to kneel between his outstretched legs, and closed my callused hand around his be-ringed one to bring the fruit to my own lips. Meeting his gaze, I bit into the same place his teeth had torn and wiped my mouth with the back of a dusty hand.

Orix laughed. "Ah, Raik. You've not changed a whit." He ran his gaze over me, then frowned and moved a candlestick closer to peer at me. "Your leathers are ripped." He traced the slash a scrim saber had made the night before. The blue gaze bored into mine. "Were you hurt?"

Despite my protest to the contrary, he insisted on making sure of my health and untied the bindings of my doublet. Beneath the black leather lay a now sweat-soaked blouse of emerald Qarthian silk, the same color as his standard, which my youngest brother had borne into battle the night before. The silk had been the king's gift the year before on my birthday: green that matched my eyes. His color marked me as Orix's as much as my clan's cheek tattoo. The overlapping petals of the flowering Ddumach ivy tangled itself around a diadem, the symbol for Hellesbor, clan name of my sovereign.

"The leather's ruined, Lord. So's the silk."

"No matter." His gaze still held mine. He jerked loose the ties at my throat as if he meant to strip me naked.

I shivered despite the summer's heat.

This is one of my favorite SF books. I read it, then Green Mars, and finally Blue Mars. A later book called The Martians came out separately but actually continues this series.

If you like geology, you'll love this book.

I Googled terms I'd never heard of, because the way Kim Stanley Robinson writes is so compelling that you want to know every single detail from accretions to karsts to veins of silica.

This book got me invested in geology. I still follow the topic today.

This near-future chronicle of interplanetary colonization ought to be a must read for anyone who wants to go to Mars.

The barren landscape of the red planet welcomes a group of one hundred colonists on a mission to transform Mars into a more Earthlike planet. But it doesn't make anything easy.

I read this book the first time many years ago, when I was developing the concept of my Chiasmii people. A Chiasma would be fully male and fully female, but would alter between the two genderphases (San - female, and Pter - male) every three months or so. In the "between times" they would be gender fluid. Pregnancy was avoided by avoiding penetration during the female phase. They were telepathic, and universally blond-haired and blue-eyed.

Unknown to them, they had been created to be "genetic vessels" capable of being impregnated by their own seed, creating a single-parent host. This provided ample room for added DNA, which could turn them into other creatures.

In my current story universe, it's been thousands of years since their creator contacted them, and they have only fleeting memories of myths to remind them.

Reading this book inspired me in so many ways. I highly recommend it.

Earlier, one of the other Deshais had brought a policewoman to the house, and idBot (the security company Luc owns) discovered she'd left behind trackules - a type of spyware. Luc needs to go out to deal with a related issue.

Excerpt from A Stolen Heart

Outside Luc's bedroom door, he met Nikko as the young man came up the stairs. A glance told Luc what he needed to know; idBot had informed everyone.

Senthys squirmed, so Luc set the boy down.

"Nikko?" The boy tapped his brother on the leg. "Can you take care of me? Please?"

"What? You know it. I'll always take care of you, Senth." He turned back to Luc. "I'm sorry I doubted you. Why would Orella do that?"

Luc locked his door. "There's no proof she did it on purpose."

"I don't get it." The young Deshai looked at him askance. "First you accuse her, and now you defend her?"

"Nikko?" Senthys tugged on the young man's hand. "Will you play with me and my bears? Please?"

"Not yet, Senth."

The boy sulked. "But I said please. Ms. Fasra says when someone says please then you are supposed to do it."

"Yes, you did, and she's right." Nikko squatted. "But adults can't always stop what they're doing and play. Even if they want to. Sometimes we have to do adult things first."

An unfortunate truth. Like hunting monsters when you'd prefer rocking a sweet little boy to sleep and putting him into bed where he was safe. Luc slid one hand into a pocket.

Senthys pouted. "But I don't want to adult."

"I don't either sometimes. Neither does Luc." Nikko flashed a smile up at him. "Right?"

"Exactly right."

"Then play with me."

"In a few minutes." Nikko stood.

The boy gave an exaggerated sigh. "Okay."

"Um..." Nikko hesitated. "What were we talking about?"

"Orella and trackules. I never accused her. I said I suspected there might be spyware. Shohn Lexius at idBot thinks she might have been dusted with trackules without her knowledge, and I agree. I doubt Orella would jeopardize her relationship with Kaydn."

"Okay, I can see that. But how could she be dusted and not know?"

"I plan to investigate, that, Nikko. I hope she didn't do it herself. Now, I'm going to need help with something important. Who else is home?"

"I'm here," Brinn called out, coming up the stairs. He stepped out onto the second floor.

Holding his bears, Senthys ran over to him. "Will you take care of me, please?"

"Take care of you?" Brinn gave Luc and Nikko a questioning look. "You know it, little brother."

"Can we play?"

"Sure. In a few minutes. I have to talk to Luc first."

"Okay." Senthys heaved a drawn-out groan. "I know. You have to adult."
