From the opening of Forever Love

The young hero is a newly made immortal named Izzorah. He's also a Kin, a feline-human race with catlike eyes and ears, fangs, claws, and the ability to purr. He and his soon-to-be spouse, Luc, are standing at the door, saying what I call a never good-bye. You know the type; someone's leaving and you keep trying to let them go but then they say this and you say that... These two do not want to part even for a minute.

Luc braced one hand against the open door, body to body with his lover. "You look like you need one more kiss."

"No, kahmay t'hahr, lord of my heart." A purr rumbled in Izzorah's chest, and he tilted his head. The late afternoon sun streamed through the door, lighting his glorious green eyes. His pupils altered, widening like a cat's, until only a rim of emerald remained. He focused on Luc's mouth, then shifted his gaze back up. "I need a lot of kisses."

Cupping a hand beneath Izzorah's chin, Luc leaned in. Lips almost touched lips. "Is that all you need?"

"Do we..." Color bloomed in Izzorah's cheeks. "Is there time?"

"I should have left an hour ago, but with you, I want one kiss after the other." And instead of walking through the door, he captured Izzorah's mouth once more.

His lover arched against him, arms around Luc's neck. When the kiss ended, Izzorah drew back, sliding gentle claws through Luc's hair, then down his chest.

Luc's skin tingled from the erotic touch, the raging heat of his inner beast eager for release. He refused to allow his fiery nature the control it craved. As much as he desired another hour with Izzorah, duty called.

After another quick kiss, Luc stood up straight. "I'd better go before you drag me back inside and make me do more than kiss you."

Izzorah sputtered a laugh. "Oh, make you, did you say? I don't know anyone who can make Luc Saint-Cyr do anything he doesn't want to. I think you want that without me doing a thing."

"That's too right for words." Luc caressed Izzorah's face. "I love you, Rah. And your cute little cat ears."

"You're trying to distract me, calling me a cat. I'm not a..."

Luc stroked one of Izzorah's ears between fingers and thumb.

"...um... I'm... Ooh, yes, like that..." He rubbed against Luc's hand.

Continuing to play with Izzorah's ear, Luc smiled. "Is it working?"

Izzorah arched his back, pushing that ear into Luc's touch. "What?"

With a chuckle, Luc released him. "Distracting you."

"No. I'm not a cat. I'm Kin." Izzorah rubbed his head beneath Luc's chin.

"Rah." Luc pulled back. "You just marked me, didn't you?"

Izzorah looked up at him through dark lashes. "I am yours, lord of my heart, but I want other Kin to know you are mine."

What Luc wanted, Luc got, and what he wanted was Izzorah #SciFi #WriteLGBTQ

In this scene, Luc and Izzorah have finished dinner, and retired to a living area nearby.

Luc had lived thousands of years. He was a master in the art of Sempervian Compulsion. He could seduce Izzorah and make him think it was all his idea. Izzorah already had a few drinks in him. He wouldn't even resist.

But what was the point of that? Luc wanted a relationship, not a romp. He wanted Izzorah to yield because he wanted to. No... he wanted Izzorah to be more than a partner. A true equal.

What Luc wanted, Luc got. In business, in war, in life, no one stood in the way. Not once Luc decided to pursue a thing.

But this was his precious Izzorah.

So now, Luc must wait, when what he wanted was to reach out... and take what so rightfully should belong to him.

Izzorah folded his hands before him, head down. Waiting, perhaps, for Luc to make the next move.

Luc took a step toward him, but placed himself beside Izzorah, facing the opposite direction. "You're a wonderful dinner companion."

"Thank you. I hope I didn't bore you with all that talk about home."

"Not at all. I find it...alien, but fascinating."

Izzorah said nothing.

Luc waited. A full minute passed with neither speaking.

Oh, screw this indecision! He should take the Kin to bed and be done with it. Luc knew he was going to. Why should he wait for the inevitable? No point in fighting the obvious. Izzorah wanted him. Luc wanted Izzorah. He should take him. Now.

But Luc's sensible side barred the way. He had promised. The Kin needed to know Luc respected him. Yes, Izzorah had committed himself, but it was still his move.

Luc must do the honorable thing. He shifted his weight, spreading his legs. It did nothing to ease the discomfort his arousal caused. Inner heat rivaled his craven desire for the wet friction of Kin fangs and rough tongue. Luc craved Izzorah's guileless eyes and smile, his artless desire to please. The innocence that personified him.

This young Kin could smell emotion. He had to know Luc burned. Why was he waiting? Or perhaps that was why. Had Luc frightened him with the intensity of his need? Perhaps Izzorah guessed what Luc wanted to do to him, take from him, and would run screaming in the other direction.

Instead, Izzorah took a step back and then set one foot between Luc's, looked up. "You told me when I was ready, to come to you." The emerald cat's eyes had gone wide. His smile faltered. "I'm ready. I know what I want. You."

Excerpt

As Senth approached The Ghost, the club's beefy Kin bouncer put out a hand. "Hold up, kid. You--" She motioned toward Khyff -- "Wait over there. Now..." She motioned Senth aside. "You got ID?"
Senth opened his cloak, revealing the lining with its unmistakable Thieves' Guild insignia, a skeleton key inside a slashed circle. He gave his Sen'dai's hand sign, showing the back of two fingers placed together straight across his waist.
"Ffffftt!" The bouncer made an apologetic shrug. "Sorry. Why didn't you say you were the Man's right up front?"
"His shouldn't have to." Senth brushed a hand down the front of the cloak. "And I'm no kid."
"Sorry, sir." She opened the door for both of them and bowed.
Once inside, Khyff held out one palm, and Senth slid his down it, hooked his fingers as Khyff did, and with hands clasped, gave one downward shake.
"C'mon, Bro." Khyff led the way past the darkened foyer.
Inside, music pulsed like a living entity. Throbbing bass tickled Senth's chest, and he coughed. Drums pounded. Colored lights swept the cavernous room. Strobes flashed across the congested dance floor, highlighting bobbing heads and upflung arms. Light glinted off human bodies slick with sweat, while bared and damp Kin furskin stuck out in points, laden with glitter.
"Stay close," Khyff shouted over the pounding music, standing next to Senth. He headed for the rear and left no chance to argue. They skirted around the crammed dance area. Senth liberated a few loose credit stubs clipped to belts and stuffed them into the pockets of his cloak.

The barren house echoed the void inside. Empty places looked back, demanding a reaction. But Joe Townsend the third had nothing left to give.

From the moment he'd learned of his folks' accidental death, life had screamed past him like a banshee. The never-ending whirlwind of people needing around-the-clock decisions sucked his energy dry. He leaned against the inside of his parents' front door and slid down.

Today, he'd said his formal goodbyes at their memorial. He'd smiled like a wooden soldier at the unending I'm-so-sorrys and the non-stop oh-poor-Joe-how-are-you-doings.

How did they think he was doing?

Life had plunged him into a lightless, inescapable world of sympathetic platitudes.

How could he move forward when everywhere he looked, the past held him fast?

How could he move forward when every step led him further away from the people he'd loved most?

How could he move forward and lever past this pain?

There had to be a better way to handle heartbreak. A saner way.

Joe stood and dusted himself off. He would throw himself into his work. That's what his dad always--

A fresh ache swept over him.

"Whatever you can't change, accept and work through, Son. Focus on what you can do, what you have to do, and don't waste time looking back."

Joe braced an arm across his stomach. Would he ever think of his father's words of wisdom again without this foreboding sensation of loss? This sense that part of himself was missing? Or of his mother and her strength? Her abiding belief in him, encouraging him, guiding the way?

Dragging his feet, Joe staggered through the house, back to the room that had been his when he lived here as a boy, now stripped bare. His parents had put the house on the market and accepted an offer weeks prior to their deaths. They'd put everything in storage, preparing to move. The new owners would arrive tomorrow.

Nothing remained of the place Joe had once called his haven.

There was no home to go to. Starting tomorrow, this place would be someone else's. Not his parents'. Not his. Not anymore.

This sterile room symbolized everything he'd lost.

He couldn't think about this tonight. Couldn't think about work, even work he'd been preparing for his whole life.

Joe had longed for the opportunity to work at his father's side. The pride he'd felt when appointed had rivaled the thrill of collaborating with him. The joy of raw discovery, uncovering new truths while pushing the frontiers of knowledge to the nth degree.

Now, he was taking his father's place instead. Trying to fill shoes he would never be worthy to wear.

Right this moment, success was a meaningless distraction.

Exhausted, he curled up in the middle of the floor, surrounded by nothing but loss. He'd spend one last night in this empty shell of a place he'd once considered home.

Come morning, he'd walk away forever.

What is your favorite meal?

Fish, cooked over an open fire, and vegetables grilled beside it.

If any, what food do you refuse to eat?

I have quite literally starved to death before. There is no food I won't eat.

Tell us about a meal or food that says "home" to you.

Fish cooked around a campfire followed by those sweetish brown crackers. You put a white puffy thing on a stick and hold it over the fire until it starts to melt, and then you put that between the crackers and chocolate. I don't know what you call them, but I call them delicious. They are the perfect end to a campfire meal shared with friends.

When you find yourself with some type of unknown food on your plate, what do you do?

I ask questions, and poke at it a bit, but inevitably, I eat it.

Have you ever eaten military style rations, and if so, what was your favorite?

For more years than I care to count. Anything that comes in a box that heats itself is a winner.

If you cook, what kind of food do you like to prepare?

I am hopeless in the kitchen, but my staff sees that I never go hungry.

Favorite alcoholic beverage?

A flavorful wine, especially one grown in vineyards owned by friends.

Favorite non-alcoholic beverage?

Clean, fresh water.

What do you grab when there's no time for a regular meal?

Whatever holds still long enough for me to put it into my mouth.

Who are your favorite people to share meals with?

The people on the High Council, and other dear friends.

Tell us what your author eats or drinks while writing about you.

Kayelle guzzles water, but she also drinks a caffeine free sugar free Coke. And coffee with cream and chocolate. Hot herbal tea in the evening. Sweet tea in the morning. Hmmm. She drinks a lot, but I've only seen her drink alcohol or wine on rare occasions.

What do you feed your pet/s?

Tiklaus is a ginormous panther who rules our home and eats whatever is put within reach. I make sure it's healthy and fresh.

The banner above was one of the first homepage images on my site. I love it! It was created for me by Laura Givens. She was the cover artist for many of my books, pre-indie. In this image, she put all the guys in tuxedos and grouped them as if they were at a party.

Everyone is either looking at Senth (on the right), or glancing at Luc on the left. Luc is giving Senth a serious look because Senth has lost his tie. In case you’re not familiar with the stories, Luc is Senth’s adoptive father, having reared him from age three.

The Kin who is just to the right of Luc is Jawk Brighton. He had a fling with Luc while Luc was still in a relationship with Wulf Gabriel (center, with a bow tie).

I really love how Laura captured Wulf's smile and personality -- he is a supermodel and always looks amazing. In one book, Luc muses that Wulf's smile is in half the dentist offices in the Empire.

In the background to the right of Jawk is Alitus Vivaldi. Alitus is the Minister of Imperial Intelligence for the Imperial Armada, and up until the book Jawk, Tales of the Chosen, had been in an exclusive relationship with Empress Rheyn Destoiya.

When Luc and Wulf had a falling out, Alitus comforted Wulf, who was also a Chosen. They became partners in spying for the empress, and much closer than friends, much to Luc’s dismay.

Between Wulf and Senth is the blond-haired and blue-eyed Khyff Antonello, Senth’s half brother. He is checking out Luc's reaction.

With the exception of Jawk, these guys are in almost every book I've written set in the Tarthian Empire.

I thought it would be fun to see this art, especially as it reveals so much about their personalities.
