In this excerpt, Pietas and the search party sent to find him have become lost and have walked for hours. When he realizes they're near a summit that will allow him to see the valley they searched for, he heads for it. Joss, the telepath and warrior he loves tries to keep him from going, insisting she has a better vantage point. Pietas suspects a trick.
"Joss. The truth this time."
While she studied him, he remained motionless. The gentle prod of her mind across his shields reminded him she'd seen his thoughts despite his best efforts. Or perhaps she'd allowed him to be aware. In the past, he'd noticed such intrusion during training but not outside it.
"Pietas, if you want to see the caldera from this point, I can't stop you, but once you see what's out there, you can't un-see it. I want to spare you the devastation until you've had a chance to see the good side. If I take you in through the pass, you can appreciate the true beauty of this place first. Maybe come up with a way we can make it work here. Survive."
Devastation.
According to Joss, half a million of his people lay in helpless cryosleep within lifepods on the other side of that hill. Over three thousand pods had been damaged beyond saving. The frozen immortals within them shattered.
A short hike above, the summit waited. In two short minutes he could see for himself. "How long would your route take us?"
"Less than a half hour."
Once more, the short distance to the actual summit drew his attention. How many steps?
"Pi?" Six nudged him. "Is that even a blink in the life of an immortal?"
"No, ghost, it's not." How grateful he was for this man. "Besides, I'm patient."
His sister scoffed. "You?" Turning to the twins, she pointed at Pietas. "That is not my brother."
No, he was not. He was far better. His sister could see the change. Why would she not accept it? Resisting the urge to respond with cynicism, Pietas shut his mouth.
He indicated the route Joss wanted to take. "Let's go your way."
"Thank you for listening to me." Joss took Pietas by the hand, reached up, and dragged a fingertip down the cleft in his chin. "This place is stunning. I hate that so much of it will be spoiled by our being here."
"Why? Has Mother released environmental impact studies?"
"No, she--" The look Joss sent his way resembled pity. "You'll see. Not far now."
"You've been saying 'not far' for hours. Did I not teach you to mark trails?"
"I'm sorry, Pietas. It won't happen again."
Oh, but it would. She wouldn't mean for it to happen, but it would. He'd tried for centuries to teach her how to find her way, to no avail. He kissed her cheek and drew her into his arms, savoring her warmth.
"Joss." He placed his mouth near her ear. "You couldn't find your way out of a round room with one door."
She jerked up her head and looked at him, eyes wide.
"And I adore you for it."

When you're a soldier genetically enhanced to the point of near immortality and you fight a mortal soldier resurrected with the pilfered blood of your people, friendship never enters the equation.

* I shouldn't like Pietas. He's arrogant and pretends he's uncaring, but he's one of the most fascinating characters I've read recently.
* I loved this story! A scifi bromance like nothing else I’ve ever read.
* Pietas – the Ultra of awesome powers, both mental and physical – is left helpless and doomed by humans and a betrayer from his own kind. Six – a once-human ghost who should be the sworn enemy of any Ultra – saves Pietas from a destiny worse than physical death. The two are then marooned together on a distant, most likely deserted planet.
* The Ultra has vowed never to accept help from anyone even close to human. That vow is challenged by his need to survive. The ghost has pledged to destroy all Ultras on sight. Watching Pietas and Six grapple through this deep dilemma was nothing short of beautiful for me. If these adversaries can navigate the chasm of hatred, distrust and male ego between them, maybe there’s hope for our own fractured world.
* Immersed into a setting where every character is dealing with decisions, and where the wrong one is like having a jar of nitroglycerine and dropping it at his or her own feet. Characters to root for, and a story that satisfies all of the criteria of what makes up an excellent novel.

One theme in my books is trust. Not only of others, but of yourself. Pietas, my immortal king, at times deals with family issues with the emotional level of a teenager, and I have a three-year-old who looks at life with the wisdom of an ancient. Emotional maturity has little to do with age, and my books reflect that. I have a race of catlike people called the Kin who can smell every emotion, and it's all but impossible to lie to them. Another race, the Chiasmii, are dual gendered, telepathic and see the auras of humans. Between these two races, humans have a hard time pulling a fast one -- but being human -- they still try.

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to interview Pietas on Romance Lives Forever.
It was fun, and the interview was regarding what to eat for dinner.
His answers were revealing, and quite funny.
Who knew he'd never heard the word S'mores?
I'm repeating part of it here, with permission from the blog owner.
She's a wonderful author who is named 'me.' 😉
What is your favorite meal?
Fish, cooked over an open fire, and vegetables grilled beside it.
If any, what food do you refuse to eat?
I have quite literally starved to death before. There is no food I won't eat.
Tell us about a meal or food that says "home" to you.
Fish cooked around a campfire followed by those sweetish brown crackers. You put a white puffy thing on a stick and hold it over the fire until it starts to melt, and then you put that between the crackers and chocolate. I don't know what you call them, but I call them delicious. They are the perfect end to a campfire meal shared with friends.
When you find yourself with some type of unknown food on your plate, what do you do?
I ask questions, and poke at it a bit, but inevitably, I eat it.
Have you ever eaten military style rations, and if so, what was your favorite?
For more years than I care to count. Anything that comes in a box that heats itself is a winner.
If you cook, what kind of food do you like to prepare?
I am hopeless in the kitchen, but my staff sees that I never go hungry.
Favorite alcoholic beverage?
A flavorful wine, especially one grown in vineyards owned by friends.
Favorite non-alcoholic beverage?
Clean, fresh water.
What do you grab when there's no time for a regular meal?
Whatever holds still long enough for me to put it into my mouth.
Who are your favorite people to share meals with?
The people on the High Council, and other dear friends.
Tell us what your author eats or drinks while writing about you.
Kayelle guzzles water, but she also drinks a caffeine free sugar free Coke. And coffee with cream and chocolate. Hot herbal tea in the evening. Sweet tea in the morning. Hmmm. She drinks a lot, but I've only seen her drink alcohol or wine on rare occasions.
What do you feed your pet/s?
Tiklaus is a ginormous panther who rules our home and eats whatever is put within reach. I make sure it's healthy and fresh.
