Izzorah swallowed, fighting to vanquish his fear #MMRomance #SciFi #MFRWhooks

Surrender Love: Antonello Brothers: Immortal #SciFi #MMRomance

In this scene from Surrender Love, Izzorah is on the run. He's the drummer for a famous rock band, but he terrified of heights -- with a capital T. When the group entered into the Nizamrak Building, tallest on the planet, Izzorah took two big steps back and ran. Now he's trying to figure out where he is, which is difficult, because he can't focus on anything farther away than his own fingertips.

Running Away

How far? How far? Izzorah swallowed, fighting to control his stomach and vanquish his fear.

It was just after dawn and the open air and distant bounce of sound meant he was in a clearing with no people-scents. The assistive device embedded in his stud earring made a soft tink, showing the directions he'd requested were active. A brief hum meant forward and he walked in that direction.

A high-pitched ting for an upcoming turn sounded, followed by a low tong. He turned left. Another turn warning came, then a low pong and he turned right. The hum kept him going straight.

The short, tinny plink that came next meant he'd arrived and the low pong meant the door was on the right. He fumbled for an entry panel until he realized the door had sensed him and opened. Trace levels of human scent meant people had been here but had gone.

"Welcome to the Bank of Tarth," chimed a genderless but pleasant electronic voice. The buzz-clink in his earring meant the bank's AI had connected with it. "Automated tellers are available now. How may we serve you?"

"Washroom, please."

"Gender-oriented restrooms are at each end. The central restroom is neutral. Straight ahead, then right after the main console."'

His earring directed him to the washrooms with no difficulty. Once inside, he bolted into a stall. He barely had time to lock the door before his stomach revolted against the meager breakfast he'd eaten.

He'd refused food until Kory insisted, claiming they had a big day with important people to see and places to go. Which was why Izzorah had tried to avoid eating.

Once he'd caught his breath, he opened the stall door. "Where's the sink?"

His earring hummed, and he took a few steps forward. White against dark showed him the shape, and he rinsed his mouth, then splashed water on his face.

He pulled off the earring and dried it, fastened it back. Not for the first time, he wished he'd had one while crossing Felidae on his bid for freedom. He'd covered half the planet on horseback. Unable to see stars or horizon, he'd depended on sunrise and sunset, an old compass, his wits, memory, courage and above all, the stubborn horse he'd had since he was a teen. Purkinje wouldn't have liked it in the empire, but his four-legged friend had gotten him across Felidae and saved his life. For that, Izzorah would always be grateful.

A plain silver dot that hooked to his ear might get him places, but it didn't keep him company or carry him. It couldn't shade him when he napped, and he couldn't sleep next to it for warmth on a chilly night.

What it could do was get him back to the hotel before the guys found him. Probably. Hopefully.

This was the longest life he’d ever lived. Warriors rarely made it to old age #SciFi #Romance #MFRWhooks

Surrender Love: Antonello Brothers: Immortal #SciFi #MMRomance

In this scene from Surrender Love, Luc is doing a favor for the Empress, a fellow immortal, but his heart isn't in it.

Unwanted Meetings

With breakfast behind him, Luc tapped a vid-link. "Good morning, James. We'll use the party hoversine today. Since we're representing the Empress, replace the Lucsondis flags with hers."

"Right away, sir." The android shot him a salute and signed off.

If the Empress expected Luc to impress the governor of Notidisia, the holographic disguise should help. Flying royal flags meant his long black party hoversine would appear as a light armored Tyssen Battle Hover. From outside, no one would realize it wasn't what it looked like: a green-and-brown camouflaged troop carrier with the cargo capacity of a thimble. Because his vehicle carried her personal approval within its codes, every security barrier at the starport would accept him, including the Praetorian cohort guarding the royal gate.

In the breaking dawn, Luc strolled along the pool on his penthouse roof. He took advantage of the rooftop's shields and swam every day he could, all year long. The cool morning air helped him focus and offered calm before the storm of his day. The pool's still water reflected the vivid orange and crimson gleaming in the sunrise. He paused beside it, allowing the quiet to infuse his senses.

As he reached down to touch the water, a vibration sent a shiver across the surface, announcing the hoversine.

Luc headed back toward the wide landing platform on the other side. He arrived as the camouflaged vehicle rose above the edge of the building. Black flags emblazoned with Destoiya's clenched white fist snapped in the wind, even though the air was calm. No one seeing this would realize it wasn't what it resembled.

The vehicle settled onto the ground and James exited, sharp as always in his black chauffeur's uniform. He opened the rear door. "Good morning, sir."

"James." Luc ducked into the roomy interior with its spacious, reclining seats and the full bar of a party hoversine. He settled back, stretching his legs, but upon recalling what his empress required, he sat up, ramrod straight.

Intimidate a woman.

How revolting.

Most times, his stature and solid black eyes intimidated on their own. He stood a head taller than the average person.

Owing loyalty to both the Empress of Tarth and the Sempervian king plunked Luc right in the middle of their power struggle. This time, they both wanted the same thing. He could not play one against the other or use his considerable leverage with either to do things his way.

Earlier in this lifetime, he'd earned a name for ruthlessness as the Harbinger. People feared him. The Harbinger would not think twice about intimidating anyone.

Did people fear Luc Saint-Cyr? Only in business.

They envied more than feared his shrewd business acumen, knack for buying at the right moment, multiple trusts and charitable foundations.

His people guided humanity to keep them safe. Sempervians used their accumulated wealth and combined talents to protect the weak. To stand in solidarity with an ally.

So why not use diplomacy for this?

Perhaps Pietas was right. He'd grown soft. This was the longest life he'd ever lived. Living forever did not mean you got old.

Sempervians were warriors.

Warriors died young.

Luc pressed fingertips against brow, fighting the onset of a headache. He might have to obey, but he didn't have to like it.

#Ritual I am invincible. Ritual of Strength, Bringer of Chaos series by Kayelle Allen. Performer Nik Nitsvetov @nitsvetov #PietasFans #SciFi

I am invincible.

In this scene from Origin of Pietas, Pietas is free of the lifepod, but his injuries have incapacitated him. He must rely completely on Six. Depending on others is not the king's forte. In his ritual, the final line is that he is invincible. Here, he is anything but.

Excerpt from Origin of Pietas

Six brought out a metal box and opened it. "Plain soap. Scrap of cloth. You'll be clean before you know it." Six lathered the soap and gently scrubbed Pietas's face.

Afterward, Pietas rested on the blanket. Six dried him and worked his uncooperative arms and legs into the clothes.

Mortifying to be so useless. He hadn't been this helpless since he was an infant.

The ordeal of movement and cold exhausted him. Pietas dozed and woke to find himself clothed, dry and warm.

"Ready for a manicure?" Six used the knife to pare the claws on Pietas's hands and feet. As he had on board the ship, Six passed the time with tales.

How many were fanciful stories and how many true? Pietas doubted he would ever know. It didn't matter. He could rest his throat and learn more about this ghost. The thought that he no longer gathered intel in order to kill him was unsettling at first. How long since he'd listened to someone without thinking how he could use the information to his advantage? Since he'd listened to enjoy a story?

This time, when Six told a bawdy story, Pietas laughed aloud.

Six grinned at him, threw back his head and laughed along.

The ghost cleaned up the area. He put the bar of soap back in its box and withdrew a metal comb. "This comb is also a magnet and it's strong, but it's not getting through that rat's nest. I can take care of it, if you don't mind a haircut with a blade."

The last haircut he'd had, at Dessy's hand, had been with a blade. Then, he'd thought he would trust no one else near his neck with a sharp weapon. For Six, he did not hesitate. "Please."

The knife sawed through his wet hair faster than Pietas's dagger. And didn't that tell a story all by itself?

"You okay for a few minutes while I grab a quick swim? Wash off some of this dirt?"

"Yes." He soaked up the sun. The reflective blanket warmed beneath him.

Six stripped. Like most soldiers, he showed no concern about baring his body. However confined he'd been on board the ship, he'd kept up with exercise. The ghost turned and waded down into the water.

Spread across Six's entire back was a tattoo of a mythical beast, teal outlined in black. Wings unfurled. Claws out. Fangs bared.

A dragon.

The sense of destiny coming full circle hit with the impact of a tornado slamming into a shack.

Pietas thought about the dragon while Six finished bathing.

At last, the ghost picked up his shirt and began drying himself. He dressed and came back up the slope. "Okay. Let's get you back to camp to rest and I'll fish. I'm ready for some solids and I think you could handle some tomorrow. Ready?"

"Ready."

Six picked him up.

"You like teal."

"What?" Six tossed wet hair out of his eyes.

"The color. Teal. Turquoise."

"Turq-- Oh! You saw my dragon. Took a lot of visits to complete that."

"Why?"

"It's the detail. They draw the outline first, and then--"

"No, why a dragon? Why teal?"

They'd reached camp, and one end of the parachute cloth had pulled loose. It flapped in the wind.

Six put Pietas down, and began refastening the cloth. "Dragons are primal. They're protectors. They represent courage. Teal because it's the color of sky and sea. It's heavenly energy. Pure. You ever get a tattoo?"

"Ultras could never keep them."

"Oh, right, forgot. Tattoos tell you about a person. Who they are, where they belong. Some, who they belong to."

Pietas smiled. "Yes. They do."

A king with a servant’s heart #PietasFans from Ring of the Dragon 🐲 #SciFi #MFRWhooks

Ring of the Dragon: Heart of the Immortal King #SciFi #MMRomance

In this scene from Ring of the Dragon, Pietas is on the planet Felidae trying to find a horse. He and the Kin female guide he's hired, nicknamed Dark Hair, have spent the first day in a fruitless search. Hungry, beyond exhausted, they return to their shared room. Dark Hair has taken a bath, and summoned Pietas to scrub her back. He's hidden much about himself, including the fact that he's a king. She refers to him as "nahee" meaning alien, because she can tell the name he's given her is fake.

A servant's heart

Dark Hair's furskin felt like wet velvet under his hands. He didn't stop until he'd massaged every bit of her back and neck. "Rinse?"

She slid down in the water and then sat back up. With one easy movement, she stood.

Pietas braced himself on the tub's edge as he stood, fighting not to wince at the pain in his shoulders. He offered his hand as she stepped out of the tub.

Naked, she stood before him like a queen, as confident and powerful as if she wore robes of state.

He picked up a thick towel, as lush as any aboard his vessel. Clean, white, soft. He dried her and took care to keep his touch from being intimate. When he knelt to dry her clawed feet, she placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You look up, nahee."

He met her gaze.

"Who you serve before me?"

"Serve? You mean"-- He motioned with the towel --"like this?"

Dark Hair nodded.

He thought of Cyken. "A king."

"King." She stooped before him, peering into his eyes. "Was king to you. But you are king."

Had he let something slip? He'd taken care not to bring anything that gave his true identity. "Why would you say I'm a king?"

She kissed him, her lips gentle against his, and then pulled back. "I see in everything you do. You not servant." She caressed his face. "You have power. I feel. But you hold inside. You not take power for you. You give this power." She flattened one hand over his chest. "You king with servant heart."

Pride and gratitude brought tears to his eyes, and he turned his head and blinked them away.

According to the scan, he’s “alive enough.” Yeah, right #PietasFans #SciFi #MFRWhooks

Bringer of Chaos Bundle 1 – Sci-Fi & Space Opera #SciFi #SpaceOpera #PietasFans

This scene is from a bonus story found in Bringer of Chaos Bundle 1. In it, while Six has yet to claim a friendship with Pietas, he no longer sees the immortal king as an enemy. He might still face death at Pietas's hands once they're on the planet, but for now, he's merely accompanying the sealed lifepod inside which Pietas is trapped.

My whole life, I've tried to make my abuela proud. Would she believe what the church said? That I'd given up my soul when I became a ghost? I like to think my grandmother would tell me what she usually said when I asked for advice. "Is this the desire of your heart of hearts? Can you hold your head up and be proud doing it? If not, then don't do it. If you can, then why are you wasting time talking to me?"

When I joined the Corps I had two choices. One, I could stay dead. Or two, I could make my death count. Save humanity. But when I single-handedly accomplished the task of capturing humankind's greatest foe, what was my reward?

They locked me in a cell with him. Now he's suffering in that life pod, and I'm doomed to the same fate that awaits him at the other end. DnD, ghosts call it. Dead 'n' Done. What immortals refer to as perma-death. Put permanently out of everyone's misery.

We were days away from Sempervia, and it had been months since I'd picked up even a stray thought from Pietas. Without warning, I plunged into an endless black abyss, clawing my way through the dark, desperate for even a flicker of light. I dropped to the floor. Stayed there until my heart stopped thundering and my legs didn't shake.

The horror subsided, then ended as abruptly as it started. That's when I realized I had been one hundred percent awake. The nightmare I'd experienced was his.

My first thought: Pietas just perma-died. I'd endured his death throes.

I crawled over to my pack and fumbled through it for a wrapped morsel of candy I'd smuggled aboard. Normally, I'd take one tiny bite and chew slowly, savoring every bit on my tongue, knowing I'd never taste it again. Where I was going, no one made sweets. If they did, I'd be lucky to live long enough to find some.

This time, I crammed the whole thing in my mouth, chewed a couple of times and then chased it with ghost water. Anything to get a punch of energy so I could at least stand up.

The rest of the trip, I lived in dread of that nightmare happening again.

When we finally reached Sempervia, guards had taken me out of the cell to be processed. A tech gave me the quickest exam in history. He passed a scanner over me so fast I could have been perma-dead and it wouldn't have registered. Then he flashed a blinding light in my eyes and pronounced me "alive enough."

As I made my way back, arrival klaxons sounded and blue strobe lights flashed in every corridor. Over the din, Pietas screamed the name he'd given me. Six! The thought-word pierced my skull, ripe with panic. Right behind it, a punch of fear. Not for himself.

For me.

Pietas was bound, certain of a final death, yet he feared for me?

What is wrong with the windows 🏘 on this world? #SciFi #PietasFans #MFRWhooks

Ring of the Dragon: Heart of the Immortal King #SciFi #MMRomance

In this scene, Pietas and his guide, whom he calls Dark Hair, approach a restaurant in Ruh City, near the starport. The all-powerful king has spent most of the story learning to humble himself, and the lesson has not yet been learned.

Dark Hair stopped in front of a building with small windows set high off the ground, and a wide wooden door painted green. "You see mark on door, nahee?"

"This?" He ran his fingers across it. A horizontal line carved into the wood followed by a space and then a dot. Likely the result of damage. "What is it?"

"Is sign for our kind. Gay. Here, no one kick us out. Here, we can eat."

Only a handful of people occupied the restaurant. Two sets of Kin males in the back. A few tables with female couples. Pietas and Dark Hair took a booth at the front and slid into it. Deep, dark, padded with lush leather and surrounded by ebony wood, it offered one step from daytime to night.

Unlike the bar in Old Ruh City, no one paid them attention. Like all other shops, the windows were high up on the wall.

"What's with the windows on this world?"

Dark Hair glanced upward. "Ah fay?"

"All the windows I've seen are too high up for anyone inside to see out."

"Why look out? Windows make light."

"Yes, but you can't see out them."

She laid back one ear and angled the other toward him. Curious. "And make nobody see in, either."

"How do you sell things in a store without windows?"

Both those pointy ears went back. "Silly nahee." With two fingers, she mimicked walking. "You go inside."

Pietas sat back in the booth. "You guys have so much to learn."

She lowered both eyebrows. "You not make sense."

The first Kin business that offered true competition by letting people see what they were getting stood to make a fortune. But that was not why he was here, was it?

He needed a horse. And right now, they both needed food. No wait staff, android or otherwise, in sight.

Pietas made a slight nod toward the back. "Those guys have no female with them. Is that allowed in all restaurants or just this one?"

She pushed back her hood and glanced their direction. "They sahnimay," she said, using Felis for homosexual. "Female sit other table."

A Kin male in a green apron came up to the table and bowed to Dark Hair. He spoke so rapidly in Felis Pietas couldn't understand him. Dark Hair said something back, just as fast. Without speaking to Pietas, he turned and left.

Pietas leaned toward her across the table. "What was that about?"

"I tell him bring food."

He drew back. "Humans ask each other what they want to eat."

"We eat same as bar. Yes? Good food."

The male returned with a pitcher of water and two glasses. He set them down, stole a glance at Pietas and then bowed to Dark Hair before scurrying away.

She motioned to him. "You do water."

"Because I'm male?"

She gave him that same look she'd offered every other time he'd asked that question.

He sighed. "Never mind. I'll pour."

Uh oh. The power went out and the guards are MIA ⚡🚓 #SciFi #MMRomance #MFRWhooks

Wulf, Tales of the Chosen MM Sci-Fi Romance #MMRomance #MMReads #SciFi

Luc had brought Wulf home with him to protect him from a threat. As the Harbinger, Luc has a well-won reputation in the widespread world of the Thieves' Guild. Anyone  foolish enough to attack him would be swiftly dealt with. In this scene in Luc's home, Luc and Wulf are awakened by someone breaking into their bedroom. Though Luc is armed and ready to shoot, it turns out to be his son, who's come to warn them the power is out and the guards protecting the house are all dead.

Escape Plan

How Luc hated it when he was right about things going wrong. He'd planned for big trouble; hoped for an easy solution.

Wulf stared at Senthys with a blank expression that faded to one of terror. He lurched backwards, glancing about the room like a rabbit with foxes after him.

Luc dashed forward and dragged Wulf up against his chest. "Easy, love. It's all right. I won't let anyone hurt you."

The younger man trembled, but he drew himself up and controlled his chattering teeth. "I—I'm okay. You take care of S-Senthys."

"Hey." Senthys winked at him. "Don't worry about me." He gave him thumbs up. "But you might want to get some clothes on."

Luc handed Wulf his pants. "Shirt and shoes too. We may have to run for it." Luc added his own shirt. "Now you see why I always fold my clothes. Easier to dress and run."

"Run where?" Senthys folded his arms. "There's no way out from up here except the windows in the other rooms."

"You knew we were trapped in here but you came anyway?"

Senthys frowned at him. "What was I supposed to do, leave you? You're my dad."

Luc slipped on his shoes. "We'll talk about safety later." He tucked the weapon in his pants pocket, opened the drawer, and pulled out an extra power clip. "Wulf, do you know how to shoot?"

"I could learn."

"That's my boy. You may have to. I don't want to arm Senthys if I don't have to."

"What!" Senthys faced him. "I can fire a weapon. I've had training. He hasn't."

"And if I need you to shoot I'll give you a gun without hesitation, but I don't want to jeopardize your guild standing if I don't have to."

The Guild took a dim view of using a weapon except in self-defense. Armed robbery, at least on Kelthia, didn't exist. A sad truth that had come about after the death of Wulf's father.

"Wulf, love, open the closet door. Go to the third set of shoe cubbies on the left, then the fourth cubby up from the bottom right. Reach into the back and push."

The rear of the closet swiveled open.

"Oh, cool!" Senthys rubbed his hands together. "A secret passageway."

"Senthys, you lead the way. Here." He tossed him a flashlight from the drawer. "No noise."

"Yes, sir."

Wulf followed him without prompting.

Luc closed the outer closet door, entered the narrow brick passageway, and shut the secret door behind him. A smooth passageway tilted down. Luc brought up the rear.

Wulf waited for him ahead. "So much 'not even Senthys could get in here tonight.'"

"Shh." Luc raised a finger to his lips. "Wulf," he whispered, "would you kindly keep in mind a killer's in the house searching for us at this very moment? Keep your voice down."

At the bottom of the stairs, Senthys stopped before a metal door. "I've never seen so many locks in one place before."

"Excuse me." Luc turned sideways to fit into the cramped space and moved around Wulf. To dry his fingertips, Luc brushed them against his pants and then stroked the topmost lock. "Senthys, hold the light."

"Yes, sir. What system is this?"

He keyed a pattern on the second lock. "A Cyr de Tomasson. Very old, made before the planet Kelthia was part of the Tarthian Empire." He caught Wulf's knowing smile over Senthys' head. Luc had been Cyr de Tomasson in a previous life. This was his invention.

"Wow." Senthys squinted at the locks. "I never thought I'd get to see one of these. Was de Tomasson related to you?"

Luc fumbled the lock sequence and had to start over. "What in the worlds made you think that?"

"The 'Cyr' in the name. Seems like a lot of Kelthian history is about people with that name. I run into it all the time when I'm researching the guild archives for Grand Master de Laney."

Senthys shone the light on the last lock. "Did you put this thing down here?"

Luc hesitated. "It came with the house." Not a total lie. He'd built the house too, in another life.

"Don't you think it's time to upgrade?"

"Modern thieves have no idea how to operate the system. It isn't just a series of locks, Senthys. There are small switches and catches as well." He released the final lock. "Virtually pick-proof. It's safe to say no one in the union these days could break into it."

"Then how did you manage it so smoothly?"

Luc pulled open the door, took the light from his son, and shone it up on his own face. "I'm the Harbinger, remember?" He used the light to indicate the opening. "Let's go."

This idBot of yours is invading everything #Excerpt from A Stolen Heart #SciFi

Let idBot get the door

Is it true that idBot sees everything? In this scene, Luc is about to enter an elevator/lift in the Thieves' Guild. The elevator car moves up, down, and sideways to traverse the huge building. He's on his way to an important meeting.

idBot sees everything

After Luc left Tonio's office, he visited the Arcane Level library on the thirtieth floor, checking data to prepare for his meeting with Ms. Lexius. He headed for his office, but when the elevator opened, Grand Master Aerlray de Clare stood inside.

Luc repeated his mantra. Focus, not dwell. Move forward. Gathering his patience, Luc entered and pressed the button for his floor. "Aerlray."

"Luc Saint-Cyr." The man smiled like a predator. "The man I'm looking for."

"Oh?" Luc kept his back to the doors. "Why's that?"

"It's been brought to my attention idBot's poking its nose into our files."

"Is that so?" Floor numbers in idBot green scrolled around the top of the car as it moved downward. Ten floors to the first turn. "That phrase 'idBot sees everything' is literal."

"But it's scanning confidential data. Contracts. Personnel. Sealed adoptions."

And why was he trying to hide those? "IdBot needs to know what it's protecting."

"A lock on a door doesn't need to know what's behind the door."

"IdBot's more than a lock. It gathers intel about its surroundings. It's a living, breathing system that can actively protect its owner." He owed Shohn Lexius for that tidbit.

"I don't care about any of that." De Clare puffed himself up. "I want it to stop. Now. Pull idBot back from this invasive search, Saint-Cyr. It's setting a dangerous precedent. The Guild won't tolerate it."

He'd switched to using last names. Interesting.

Three floors.

"Aelray, if you think a threat will deter me, you don't know me."

"No threat." De Clare held up both hands. "But this idBot of yours is meddling where it doesn't belong."

"Oh?" The car slowed, shifted direction sideways. "What is there to hide?"

De Clare pointed at him. "I'm not the only councilmember who dislikes these invasive searches. This could have serious consequences if it came to a vote."

Good. Let it. "Why are you telling me this?"

"Because you own idBot."

"Let's say a tech company hires one of our people. Signs a contract for corporate espionage, but it's bungled. Things go badly. What's the procedure for a complaint?"

De Clare stepped back. "Why are you asking me? You know the procedure."

"That's right. I do." The car slowed, headed down again. "Procedure doesn't say 'go to the Grand Master and whine."

"What's your point?"

"When the Guild installed idBot, it came with a book of procedures in case anything went wrong. I didn't write the book, but I can guarantee you that nowhere in it does it suggest hassling members of the board or the owner."

The man stiffened, mouth set in a straight line. His usual cocky self had deteriorated into a petulant boy. "Are you going to stand there and tell me this isn't your doing?"

"What isn't my doing?"

The elevator made the last turn to the side, bypassing the Heart of the Guild. Not unlike de Clare, who could not seem to grasp the heart of the organization.

"Look, Saint-Cyr." De Clare arranged his robes of office. "This idBot of yours is poking through employee files, intake records, and financial statements. It's rifling through everything."

Excellent. More proof. Luc bared his teeth in a pseudo-smile. "You mean it's searching databases in order to back them up and provide security for every aspect of the facility?" The car slowed. The doors opened and Luc took one step outside. He wedged a foot to block the elevator from closing.

"That's exactly what I mean!" Spittle showed at the corners of de Clare's mouth. He took a full step back, shoulders against the wall. "I want it to stop." He jabbed a finger toward Luc. "Now!"

Luc released the doors. "Then call the Help Desk."

“Ow. Why am I on the floor?” Boxing mishap from Wulf by Kayelle Allen #MMRomance #SciFi #MFRWhooks

Wulf, Tales of the Chosen MM Sci-Fi Romance #MMRomance #MMReads #SciFi

In this scene from Wulf, while looking for Luc, Wulf opened the door to a built-in gym where Luc and his teenaged son, Senthys had been boxing. Senthys ducked just as the door slid open, and Luc punched Wulf.

What happened?

"Wulf?" Luc's voice intruded in the darkness. "Wulf, wake up."

He opened his eyes to find Luc and Senthys both hovering over him. "What happened?"

The teenager leaned in close, peering at him. "Nose is busted."

"Senthys!" Luc snapped. "Get back. This is all your fault!"

"Is not!" the youth shot back. "I didn't deck him. You did."

Wulf pressed his nose. "Ow. You hit me?"

"He sure did." Senthys jerked a thumb at Luc. "Right in the nose."

"I did not!" Luc insisted.

"Shut up, both of you. Somebody hit me. Why?" Wulf raised himself up on an elbow.

"Don't get up." Luc knocked it out from under him.

Wulf's head bounced on the semi-soft surface. "Ow!"

"Sorry! I'm sorry." Luc caressed Wulf's face. "Why'd you come in? The sign on the door says 'knock and wait.' You could've been hurt."

"He was hurt," Senth pointed out.

Luc glared at him.

"What sign?" Wulf rubbed his brow. "My head feels like shit. Where am I?"

Senthys grinned at him. Up close, his blue eyes had slashed catlike pupils and his fangs showed. Otherwise, he appeared human. "Your head hurts because Dad punched you in the nose."

"Senthys!" Luc gritted his teeth. "This is all your fault!"

"Hey, I didn't do anything." Senthys moved to Wulf's other side. "You okay, Wulf?"

"Senthys!" Luc stiffened. "That is Mr. Gabriel to you."

Wulf closed his eyes. "Please fight later. What happened? Why'd you hit me?"

"I'm sorry he beat you up, Wulf." Senthys sat back.

"His name is Mr. Gabriel"-- Luc repeated --"And I didn't beat him up."

"Luc, let him call me Wulf. Mister sounds like you're talking to my father."

"'Luc'?" Senthys chuckled. "You let someone call you 'Luc'?"

"Son, do not use my first name."

Senthys shrugged. "Wasn't me calling you 'Luc'. I said Wulf calls you 'Luc'. I know better than to call you 'Luc', sir. I know how much you hate it when people call you by the name 'Luc'. I sure wouldn't call you 'Luc'."

"Senthys!" Luc's teeth showed in a grimace. "Knock it off!"

The youth blinked, his face a picture of innocence. "Knock off what?"

"Both of you!" Wulf covered his eyes. "Shut up!"

The perils of parenting a professional thief 😏🔐 #SciFi #MMRomance #MFRWhooks

Wulf, Tales of the Chosen MM Sci-Fi Romance #MMRomance #MMReads #SciFi

After getting a call from the Thieves' Guild Academy that Senth had been suspended from school, Luc had to hop between planets and fly home. Now, dinner over, father and son finally talk. This scene takes place on the planet Kelthia in Luc's home.

There's no rule. I checked.

Luc and Senthys cleaned the kitchen after dinner while Wulf napped on the couch. For once, Senthys didn't argue over homework and he completed his academic lessons without difficulty. Luc practiced with him for the Level 14 Advanced Pickpocket exam he'd take next week.

After Luc put Senthys through his paces, he clapped his son on the shoulder. "Excellent work. No doubt you'll pass with a perfect score."

"Thank you, Sen'dai."

"According to the Headmaster, you have the highest aptitude in the Academy."

Senthys shut off the learning pad and picked it up. "He always talks to me like I'm a screw-up."

"That's because you insist on pranks and foolishness."

"Okay, yeah, I like pranks, but I'm no screw up."

"I agree with you there. So suppose you explain to me how you got suspended from the Thieves' Guild Academy for stealing ice cream from the lunch room."

"Oh, that." His son made an off-handed gesture. "One of my friends got put on punishment for not studying, even though he knows the material perfectly. They told him he couldn't buy ice cream for a week."

"How does that involve you?"

"Well, they didn't tell me I couldn't buy it for him."

Luc rubbed his mouth, leaning back. "The way Headmaster de Laney tells it, you stole the ice cream."

"Yeah, but only because he punished me for buying it for him. That wasn't fair. There's nothing in the handbook about not stealing ice cream. I checked."

How like his son to know precisely how far to push the rules. Toes right on the line but never going over. Luc waited to see if Senthys would say more.

"You sent me to the Academy to learn to be a professional thief, yet stealing from them is against the rules?" Senthys folded his arms. "Explain that if you can."

Luc opted for the answer that would end the conversation fastest. "The headmasters don't like anyone working the system and showing them up. You know what that means?"

"Yeah. Exactly. Don't get caught again."
