In this scene, Luc meets the members of a rock band managed by one of the companies he owns, and when he first meets and shakes hands with the drummer, a Kin, things change. The Kin are a catlike race, human overall, but with distinguishing feline characteristics.

Well, hello there... Excerpt from Surrender Love

Luc offered his hand to the shorter, dark-haired Kin. "You must be Izzorah."

The youth took his hand and looked up at Luc. Gentle face, softer than most Kin, but that square jaw bespoke strength. His hand trembled and felt clammy, a sure sign of fear.

Luc wrapped it with both his in a reassuring grip. "Welcome to Tarth. I hope..." The oval, catlike pupils and emerald eyes pulled Luc down into their quiet depths. As if he stared into a deep and tranquil forest pool, the tension of the day faded. Mesmerized, Luc held Izzorah's hand.

A peach-colored blush stole across the Kin's cheeks and he lowered his gaze and withdrew his hand, breaking the spell.

"Uh..." Luc gave himself a mental shake. "Welcome to Tar— er, I said that." He stammered like an adolescent meeting a crush. "I meant to For Women Only. No, to Lucsondis." He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Forgive me. I've been all over this morning. So busy I forgot where I was." What was wrong with him? It wasn't as if he'd never seen a gorgeous Kin male before. "Have you spent much time on Tarth?"

Izzorah peeked up at him. A thick fringe of black velvet lashes framed those bewitching green eyes. "I live here when I'm not touring. In the Kelthian District, with my cousin." Izzorah nodded toward his cousin. "His big brother."

"Wonderful. It must be good to be near you."

Izzorah blinked. "Sir?"

His thoughts tangled up under the impact of Izzorah's gaze. "I mean, it must be nice to be your family. I mean—near your family."

Izzorah broke into a full smile.

Luc was lost, content to stare and enjoy the Kin beauty's charm. His appeal went far deeper than the surface. The peace in those green eyes offered rest. He smiled back, neither of them speaking.

His assistant's voice yanked him back to the moment. She introduced the other band members. Gazing at the lead singer, a human, was pure enjoyment.

Izzorah's effect lay on a far grander scale. He drew Luc with some intangible attraction he had no words to describe. The feeling he'd had upon waking that this would be a good day came back to him. Then, he hadn't known why.

Now, he had not one smidgen of doubt.

In this scene, it's the morning after Luc and Izzorah's first night together as lovers, and they are at the breakfast table.

Feast - Excerpt from Surrender Love

"Luc, can I help you get ready for your day?"

"Oh, Izzorah." A slow smile crossed Luc's face. "I may need a long, hot, sudsy shower and then help getting dry afterward."

A tender ache had Izzorah squirming in his seat. He offered a not-so-innocent smile. "We had that kind of shower before breakfast."

"Yes, we did." The man trailed a fingertip farther up Izzorah's arm, causing him to flush with heat. "But between now and then, I intend to work up a sweat. I'm going to need another one."

Izzorah squirmed again, spreading his legs farther apart.

"And then I'll need help to dress. Tuxedo affair. I'll teach you how to fasten everything. It's complicated. We may have to take everything off and put it back on a few times so you can practice."

They rose together and leaned across the table. Izzorah gripped Luc's robe to pull him close, deepening their kiss. The table dug into his thighs.

The servant's return with milk and coffee broke them apart.

Izzorah's cheeks flamed.

Luc reseated himself, a self-satisfied smile on his gorgeous face.

Biting into his lower lip, Izzorah resisted the urge to cast breakfast aside and feast on Luc instead.

The server poured more coffee and left.

The size of Luc's dark hands as they wrapped the white mug brought back memories of the night before. Those hands had held him, turned him, lifted him. Loved him. Izzorah had given himself over in complete trust. He'd rested in Luc's strong arms. Those loving hands had bathed him, soaped his chest and shampooed his hair. Those same tender hands had dried his skin and hair, lifting strands with patient fingers as he blew it dry.

Izzorah swallowed, his throat tight.

In this scene, Izzorah is recalling a concert where he entertained as the drummer for the rock group Kumwhatmay.

Surrender Love

Izzorah cranked up the hot water and turned his back, head tilted down so it soothed the tension in his neck and shoulders. He lathered Kin shampoo into his pelt, a thick band of long fur covering the upper part of his chest above his nipples, up to the collarbone. Humans likened it to a lion's mane. He always hid his pelt beneath shirts, unwilling to bare his alien nature to fans. It was one thing for them to know he was Kin. Another to flaunt it.

He lifted his face to the water, rinsed everything and turned around again. While the fall of heated water soothed his back, his mind wandered to the past. At their last concert, he'd been tired. He was always tired, but that night had been extra hard. His chest had been hurting him again and it hurt to breathe. He'd psyched himself up by remembering a vid.

He had never seen the audience, but one time, Kory had found a vid of Kumwhatmay on Imperinet and downloaded it to Izzorah's player. It showed Izzorah's drum solo halfway through the show. About ten Praetorian guards had sat on the front two rows, all decked out in the black military uniforms of the Empress, clapping in unison.

To Izzorah's music. The beat of his drums. His drums.

Talk about knocking yours ears off. That cut them off at the base and threw them on the floor. He, Izzorah Ceeow, had played for Praetorian and hadn't even known it.

So the night of the last concert on Kelthia when he was too weary to stick out a claw, he pretended the whole audience was nothing but Praetorian. He'd played better than ever.

The audience had hooted and cheered and screamed. After his solo ended, the others tried to join him on cue, but the audience went crazy. Izzorah fumbled a drumroll, unsure what was happening. When he realized what they were chanting, it shocked him into flat-eared silence.

Humans repeated Izzy! Izzy! Izzy! which was pure out-and-out stellar, but his people, the Kin fans out there, had set up the sustained howl of a speerus kinthu—a spirit of pride. A call to the spirit of the people to come witness. Come judge. It was done so bad things didn't happen without being seen, or to celebrate a wedding, or a birth. Except on that night, you could hear the pride as well as smell it. Chills chased over him even now, prickling his pelt as if he were there.

The crowd was calling for his people to come and witness his song.

If he never beat another drum, he could die with his ears straight up.

In this scene, Luc and Izzorah have finished dinner, and retired to a living area nearby.

Luc had lived thousands of years. He was a master in the art of Sempervian Compulsion. He could seduce Izzorah and make him think it was all his idea. Izzorah already had a few drinks in him. He wouldn't even resist.

But what was the point of that? Luc wanted a relationship, not a romp. He wanted Izzorah to yield because he wanted to. No... he wanted Izzorah to be more than a partner. A true equal.

What Luc wanted, Luc got. In business, in war, in life, no one stood in the way. Not once Luc decided to pursue a thing.

But this was his precious Izzorah.

So now, Luc must wait, when what he wanted was to reach out... and take what so rightfully should belong to him.

Izzorah folded his hands before him, head down. Waiting, perhaps, for Luc to make the next move.

Luc took a step toward him, but placed himself beside Izzorah, facing the opposite direction. "You're a wonderful dinner companion."

"Thank you. I hope I didn't bore you with all that talk about home."

"Not at all. I find it...alien, but fascinating."

Izzorah said nothing.

Luc waited. A full minute passed with neither speaking.

Oh, screw this indecision! He should take the Kin to bed and be done with it. Luc knew he was going to. Why should he wait for the inevitable? No point in fighting the obvious. Izzorah wanted him. Luc wanted Izzorah. He should take him. Now.

But Luc's sensible side barred the way. He had promised. The Kin needed to know Luc respected him. Yes, Izzorah had committed himself, but it was still his move.

Luc must do the honorable thing. He shifted his weight, spreading his legs. It did nothing to ease the discomfort his arousal caused. Inner heat rivaled his craven desire for the wet friction of Kin fangs and rough tongue. Luc craved Izzorah's guileless eyes and smile, his artless desire to please. The innocence that personified him.

This young Kin could smell emotion. He had to know Luc burned. Why was he waiting? Or perhaps that was why. Had Luc frightened him with the intensity of his need? Perhaps Izzorah guessed what Luc wanted to do to him, take from him, and would run screaming in the other direction.

Instead, Izzorah took a step back and then set one foot between Luc's, looked up. "You told me when I was ready, to come to you." The emerald cat's eyes had gone wide. His smile faltered. "I'm ready. I know what I want. You."

My character Pietas had always been the villain, but I had it in my head to write his origin story. I knew he was well aquainted with storms, personal, psychic, physical, and spiritual. Turned out he wasn't so much a villain as an anti-hero. I learned a lot about negative character traits writing him.

When I wanted to create a dragon for his spirit animal, the dragon had something to do with storms as well.

Stormsinger is well named. He can summon storms by singing to the wind and sky. His color is a blue so pale it looks white at first. Tips of nose, paws and tail are turquoise. Stormsinger can create a literal blizzard and even freeze rivers. Before Pietas met Stormsinger he could create a physical chill in the air; since developing a bond with the animal, he can freeze people solid.

Pietas's sister, Dessy, has a dragon spirit animal as well. Hers is a red dragon called Fireshade and the dragon can create heat and fire. Dessy can generate heat as well, but not fire.

Pietas and his sister met the dragons on the planet Stachien in the Colonies of Man. They were there at the dragons' birth, and protected them during an attack and a storm, which resulted in their bond. That story is found in more detail in Ring of the Dragon.

For millennia, they fight side by side. Now one king faces a lonely quest.

As Light and Shadow, King Pietas and General Cyken share every battle, as well as a fierce and passionate love.

When General Cyken falls in love with another man, Pietas undertakes a perilous quest on the dangerous world of Felidae to prove he is the better choice for Cyken.

If he succeeds in his quest, it will either bring Cyken back, or drive him even closer to his new love.

Pietas must try, for he cannot walk into eternity alone.

He must have a shadow to balance his light...

What is your favorite meal?

Fish, cooked over an open fire, and vegetables grilled beside it.

If any, what food do you refuse to eat?

I have quite literally starved to death before. There is no food I won't eat.

Tell us about a meal or food that says "home" to you.

Fish cooked around a campfire followed by those sweetish brown crackers. You put a white puffy thing on a stick and hold it over the fire until it starts to melt, and then you put that between the crackers and chocolate. I don't know what you call them, but I call them delicious. They are the perfect end to a campfire meal shared with friends.

When you find yourself with some type of unknown food on your plate, what do you do?

I ask questions, and poke at it a bit, but inevitably, I eat it.

Have you ever eaten military style rations, and if so, what was your favorite?

For more years than I care to count. Anything that comes in a box that heats itself is a winner.

If you cook, what kind of food do you like to prepare?

I am hopeless in the kitchen, but my staff sees that I never go hungry.

Favorite alcoholic beverage?

A flavorful wine, especially one grown in vineyards owned by friends.

Favorite non-alcoholic beverage?

Clean, fresh water.

What do you grab when there's no time for a regular meal?

Whatever holds still long enough for me to put it into my mouth.

Who are your favorite people to share meals with?

The people on the High Council, and other dear friends.

Tell us what your author eats or drinks while writing about you.

Kayelle guzzles water, but she also drinks a caffeine free sugar free Coke. And coffee with cream and chocolate. Hot herbal tea in the evening. Sweet tea in the morning. Hmmm. She drinks a lot, but I've only seen her drink alcohol or wine on rare occasions.

What do you feed your pet/s?

Tiklaus is a ginormous panther who rules our home and eats whatever is put within reach. I make sure it's healthy and fresh.

Luc Saint-Cyr broke up with Wulf a few weeks earlier, and today, everyone has asked Luc how he's handling it. He's the wealthiest, most influential man in the entire Empire and the fact he "can't keep a lover" is big news on the media. After a full day of fending off questions, he is not in a fit mood to talk to anyone.

He's Home After a Bad Day

Luc slumped in the back of his hoversine, putting off the inevitable, because as bad as it felt being dumped, pity made things worse. All the oh-poor-Luc-how-are-you-doing questions made him want to rip heads off people. How did they think he was doing? He went home alone every night and faced the same four walls with no one inside them but himself and his android servants. As much as he appreciated them, the androids didn't love him.

Apparently, neither had Wulf Gabriel.

His driver swung open the door.

Luc stepped out and straightened his coat. While James docked the vehicle with the rest of the fleet, Luc trudged to the railing. Atop the Nizamrak Building, over two hundred stories above ground, he drew in the crisp evening air of autumn. He let it all out, lifting his face to the night sky.

A chilled breeze, heavy with the scent of rain, blew up the sheer sides of the building and buffeted his skin. To the east, a low boom of thunder began and rumbled overhead, threatening storms. A sleepliner docking at the starport to the west vibrated the air, its roar muffled. Straight ahead, the white marble walls of the Conqueror's palace took up eight square city blocks and reflected as much light as the moon. Tarth City spread around it, a splendor of lights ablaze all the way to the snow-capped mountains on the far horizon.

Closer in, Destine Pietan Stadium sent its bright glow upward, casting a white sheen against flat clouds. Vehicles streamed in one portico and out the other. He recalled his assistant saying a rock group managed by one of his companies was performing tonight. Iron Soul? Kumwhatmay? For the life of him, he could not say.

Thomas Gabriel Stadium, he refused to look toward. Named in honor of Wulf's late father and built at Luc's personal expense, the state of the art sports complex had been presented to Wulf as a gift for their fifth anniversary, three weeks ago. Days before they broke up.

Outrageous headlines screamed his colossal failure in every language in the Empire. He'd built that place to underscore the legacy of a dear friend, but the media made Luc look like a clueless chump. Perhaps that's all he was.

He gripped the handrail and braced himself against it, arms stiff, head down. Up here, the hustle and hubbub of the city and the whoosh of traffic faded into the background. No matter how late he worked, when he returned, the empty penthouse taunted him with memories.

He pushed himself away from the railing and plodded toward the Loft.

A human got over old lovers and fell in love again. He, well accustomed to the brevity of mortal relationships, should do the same. So why did it feel like the weight of the empire crushed his chest?

Luc was Sempervian. Immortal.

Wulf was human. Mortal.

Luc would get over the loss in time, wouldn't he? If there was anything a Sempervian had plenty of, it was time.

This book has been out of print since 2014, and returns in an expanded edition with new scenes (almost 15k words) but the same tender love story and noble young hero. Surrender Love will be available in print and KU.
