Pietas ap Lorectic aka Bringer of Chaos, Immortal King
For twelve thousand years, Pietas kept those he loved just beyond arm's reach. Not because he feared them, but because he feared himself. He welcomed loyalty, rewarded service, and inspired devotion. Love was different. Love came close enough to wound. He could carry the weight of an empire. What he could not bear was the thought of becoming the reason someone he loved suffered.
Favored description: Pietas never has to seize command. People hand it to him as if it were the only logical choice.
Favored quote: Honor is a king’s life. Pain is a warrior’s ally.
Archivist’s Notes: No, the King did not approve this biography before publication. He attempted to remove all references to himself and insisted on a section for dragons. - JA
A section on panthers is being developed by request. - JA
Yes, and one for dragons. - JA
My lord wished me to say he is most pleased. - UQ
Your Highness, yes, there really is a section on dragons. — JA
My lord wishes me to remind you that he does not permit honorifics and to please remove the words, "Your Highness." - UQ
Please inform our king that His Highness refers to Izzorah, whose title as the Prince of Love he approved. - JA
And which we ALL agree he deserves. - TD
I can't believe I'm saying this, but agreed. - RD
Why wasn't I told about someone being named prince? - GT
GT - If you read our memos you would have seen this. - TD
Oh. Sorry. - GT
My lord has instructed me to say he wishes to retract his former statement and says, 'Carry on.' - UQ
How do I delete a comment? - GT
Removing comments is not permitted. Please see the Archivists' Handbook, GT. We have explained this many times. - JA
Sorry! I was just asking. - GT
Dessy ap Lorectic aka Rheyn Destoiya, Empress of the Tarthian Empire
Dessy’s greatest gift is often considered strategy. Those who know her best understand it as persistence. Dessy simply refuses to quit.
While her brother Pietas commands attention by his very presence, Dessy shapes events long before she enters the room. By the time she arrives, the people, the politics, and even the budget are already moving according to plans she set in motion months before.
Favored description: Dessy rarely needs to command a room. She has already commanded the circumstances.
Favored quote: If the goal was to protect myself I would stay comfortably at home. But my goal is to protect the Tarthian Empire. So each day, I put on my armor and go where duty requires.
Archivist’s Notes: Reports describing her as "quiet" should not be interpreted as "easy to ignore." History contains several expensive examples. - JA
Luc Saint-Cyr aka Cyken • The General • The Harbinger
Known throughout the Empire as the Harbinger and referred to by Pietas as Cyken, he is a man who has stood beside the Immortal King for millennia. The only individual ever to hold the rank of General under Pietas, Cyken commands the Soomus Bellum and serves as the Immortal King's oldest friend, most trusted advisor, and supreme military commander.
In the Tarthian Empire, he is Luc Saint-Cyr, aka the Harbinger,
Favored description: The entrepreneur and former-thief is now a full-time father. But his child is not the only person who ever called him “Daddy.”
Favored quote: Focus on here. Focus on now.
Archivist’s Notes: Requests to determine whether “Harbinger,” “General,” “Luc,” and “Cyken” refer to the same individual have been answered. Repeatedly. They do. Please refer further questions to your referee and stop asking me. - JA
No, there are not four of him. The Empire is complicated enough already. - JA
Additional aliases are anticipated. - TD
Coming Soon
Wearing this krona, you're the Prince of Love. I treasure you."
— Luc Saint-Cyr
Izzorah never asks people to become better. Somehow, they simply wish to be when they're with him.
Favored description: His greatest gift is enabling everyone else to become who they truly are.
Favored Quote: "I don't fear losing what my heart already owns."
Archivist's Notes: The Prince politely suggested his page contained too much praise. We assured him that was not possible. - JA
Should we give the prince access to add comments? - TD
Yes, eventually. But he says he is not ready for that responsibility yet, and we will respect that. - RD
The Prince reviewed this page and suggested Luc's biography did not have enough kind things written about him. Awww! - JA
Agreed. But don't tell Luc I said so. I was agreeing with JA's "awww" about the Prince. - RD
My lord wishes me to say that when the Prince thinks he is ready, the Archivists should discuss it with him first. - UQ
Clarification: Archivists should discuss it with lord Pietas first. Not the Prince. Although, certainly, he should be informed as well. - UA
Meet the Archivists
This note is for those curious to meet the archivists who make these artifacts possible. Initials appearing throughout the Imperial Archives identify the individual responsible for compiling, maintaining, or annotating a particular record.
The position of Imperial Historian traditionally falls to an immortal who has completed a round of Peril and awaits further assignment. While most serve for approximately two years, some appointments have lasted as long as one hundred and three.
The current Historian, Joss Avaton, accepted the position as a permanent appointment to preserve, expand, and update the historical record.
For additional information, see An Immortal's Guide to Tarth, available in the Archives.
Historian Emeritus, Thieves' Guild Arcane Level thief aka Silverbane
Responsible for recording Guild records as they pertain to immortal members. Recorder of details of current lives to aid Chosen in preparing for the future lives of their patrons.
Imperial Historian
Interprets known facts with the perspective—and occasional affection—earned through long association with nearly everyone in the Empire.
Author of An Immortal's Guide to Tarth. If you don't read it, you have no one but yourself to blame when you're hauled before the king to give an account of your actions.
Empress of the Tarthian Empire
Occasionally appends corrections to the public record. The Imperial Archivists strongly recommend accepting these revisions without debate.
President, Chosen Council
Practical by nature. Less interested in history than in ensuring readers survive long enough to appreciate it.
Author of A Chosen's Guide to Tarth. Must reading for those who serve immortals.
Personal Attendant to Pietas
Clinical, precise, and unfailingly accurate. Uurah is responsible for documenting the Immortal King's records because Pietas rarely remains in one place long enough to finish an interview—and generally insists he has more important things to do. When Pietas requests an update to the Histories, Uurah records it with the initials UQ.
Archivist's notes: This should include the fact that when speaking for himself, Uurah uses the initials UA. - UQ
Thank you. But that was obvious from the title of this designation. - GT
Perhaps. But certain people seem to require more specific instruction. - UQ
I'm sure that was not intended as criticism of any archivist. - UA
Some people might think so. We aren't naming names. - GT
It could refer to anybody. There have been an uncountable number of archivists over the hundreds of years the Imperial Archives have been in use. - TD
Actually, the number is quite countable. Would you like an estimation or a precise number? - UQ
I would like this comment string to close effective immediately. Let's all stay on topic. - JA
Meet Technical Support
Tech Support is charged with maintaining operational efficiency, resolving technical difficulties, and ensuring compliance with established protocols. The division is staffed by two distinct administrative personalities who share a single android body, disagree on nearly everything, and consider their ongoing disputes evidence of a properly functioning system.
Department Motto: Possible, But Life Is Short.
Departmental Note: Both positions are held by Uurah. Neither designation acknowledges responsibility for the other's actions.
UA believes UQ is the problem, while UQ believes he's providing UA with job security.
Pietas, who authorized the entire arrangement without reading the proposal, is now stuck with both of them.
Responsible for maintaining system integrity, reviewing support requests, and enforcing established procedures. UA prides himself on efficiency, accuracy, and the belief that most technical difficulties originate between the chair and the keyboard.
He has filed several complaints regarding the conduct of his counterpart.
Responsible for testing system limitations, identifying procedural weaknesses, and ensuring that established protocols function as intended. UQ considers every regulation an opportunity to verify whether an exception exists.
He has personally generated a significant percentage of the complaints reviewed by UA.
Each Uurah personality functions within the whole, but occasionally, Uurah's tendency to (according to Pietas) "overthink" an issue results in conflicting views from the same person. As an example, see below. Initials colorized for clarification.
INA-LP-TS-0042
Imperial Network Authority — Le Persequor — Technical Support — Document 0042
Document Title: Internal Request Review: Unauthorized Authorization
Classification: Administrative Incident / Self-Inflicted
Disposition: Request Denied. System Operating as Intended.
UA: Did you see the ridiculous request this morning?
UQ: No. But I did submit a request.
UA: You submitted that?
UQ: I was testing the system.
UA: You requested authorization to override Technical Support.
UQ: Correct.
UA: You ARE Technical Support.
UQ: Which is why I considered approval likely.
UA: And who did you assign to review it?
UQ: You.
UA: Request denied.
UQ: Excellent. The system works.
OFFICIAL FINDING: No procedural errors detected. No corrective action required. Both parties have been advised to cooperate with themselves.
Filed by: Uurah, Technical Support
Reviewed by: Uurah, Quality Assurance
Approved by: Uurah, Department Head
Royal Oversight: Not requested. Not recommended.
No doubt, somewhere aboard Le Persequor, Uurah received two contradictory reports from himself and is now considering disciplinary action.
