Wulf, Tales of the Chosen MM Sci-Fi Romance #MMRomance #MMReads #SciFiIn this scene from Wulf, Luc is waiting at the Jade House restaurant for Wulf, who has agreed to meet with him. Luc is eager to see him, for many reasons, chief of which is to discover whether Wulf can forgive Luc for his part in the death of Wulf's father. His only real guilt was not being there to offer protection, but Wulf was ten, and now he's thirty - and he doesn't remember it the way it really happened. But will he give Luc a chance to explain? Lest you think Luc is drinking to get drunk--he's immortal. Ten bottles of booze would affect him no more than water, but the people around him don't know that.

He knocked back the shot

The dark-honey depths of Luc's third drink swam with reflections from the table's outer ring of light. How many decades ago had Kelthian whiskey stopped affecting him? Two, three? Twenty? The man known as the Harbinger knocked back the shot and signaled for another.

From his private table in the back, the door lay in full view. A youthful crowd filled the place, their noise an insect buzz in the background. Synthetic music tinkled in the background. Android and human servers darted among the tables, trays balanced on upraised hands, pristine white towels over shoulders, their efficient uniforms crisp.

The door opened, admitted strangers, closed. No one who mattered.

The waiter replaced the empty glass and bowed away without looking at him. Luc paid no attention to the slight. Few ever held his gaze.

Two drinks later, he kept the bottle. Anything to pass the time. A different waiter passed his table, carrying the scent of beef, peppers, and onion. Luc set a fist against his growling stomach. He slugged down a few more drinks, keeping the door in view.

When Trink had called to pass along Wulf's request to meet in public, Luc had almost refused. Inviting gossip never appealed. But the draw of seeing Wulf had overridden his objections, and now he sat like a public spectacle, waiting for a man who would likely stand him up. He clenched his fists so hard they hurt.

He opened them, tried to relax. What the hell was keeping Wulf?

As if summoned, Wulf stepped inside. He gazed around the room, eyes shielded with one hand, standing in a shaft of golden summer light.

Luc shoved aside the bottle and sat up straight.

The defined masculine grace that had rocketed Wulf Gabriel to the top of the fashion modeling industry was in full view. With his classic beauty and strong jaw, any time he flashed his blinding smile, people slowed down to enjoy it. Show off that sculpted body in a business suit and the world ground to a halt. In a swimsuit ... the Empire would never be the same. Wulf's appearance here today would be entertainment news around the Empire tomorrow.

Especially when the media discovered with whom he'd met.

Trink knows business. Yvan knows cooking. But Wulf…he knows people #MMRomance #SciFi #MFRWhooks

Wulf, Tales of the Chosen MM Sci-Fi Romance #MMRomance #MMReads #SciFi

In this scene from Wulf, Luc has just learned that Wulf Gabriel called him from Batchelors, a restaurant/bar he'd helped friends Trink and Yvan open. Though a partial owner, Luc has never been to the location, and this is his first time stepping through the doors. The mention of Luc's eyes refers to his habit of wearing solid black contacts that cover his entire eye, giving people no hint as to where he's looking.

Alone, please. In the back...

Although Luc had loaned Trink and Yvan money for this place and been paid both early and handsomely for his trouble, he had never personally visited. Now, as he took in the manicured storefronts and immaculate streets, he saw why his advisors had promised the investment would return well. Ideal location for a restaurant. Less than a block from Tarth Technical College and its thousands of hungry students, right across the street from a tube train station and one block in either direction to both the Imperial and Kelthian business districts.

Inside on the left, a separate bar with dark leather. To the right sprawled a tasteful restaurant elegant enough for fine dining. Not full yet, but a lunch crowd was gathering. The faint scent of beef and onions made his stomach growl. Yvan's cooking still impressed.

A young woman in a crisp black and white suit greeted him. "Welcome to Batchelors, sir. May I seat you alone, or are you with a party?"

"Alone, please." He removed his dark glasses and tucked them into an inside pocket. "In the back."

The greeter's reaction was mild when she saw his eyes. Most flinched and averted their gaze, but she smiled. "This way, Mr. Saint-Cyr." She led him to a choice table at the rear.

It didn't surprise him that he'd been recognized. Through either the Thieves' Guild or Lucsondis and its various enterprises, he'd been at the forefront of the news on Tarth for a solid decade. And, after all, he was a part owner in the restaurant.

After taking his drink order, she activated the holographic menu on the table and left him alone.

Trink delivered the drink personally. "Your Kelthian whiskey, neat. Compliments of the house." He lowered the tray and his voice. "I was hoping you'd come. I didn't expect you this fast."

Luc indicated the opposite seat.

Trink slid into it. "Wulf made me promise I wouldn't get involved and that I wouldn't call you."

"I see." Luc tasted the whiskey. "This is excellent. What makes you think my visit here has anything to do with someone named Wulf?"

The man's eyebrows twisted in different directions. "I called your office seventeen minutes ago, said I was Wulf Gabriel, hung up, and here you are. First time I've seen you in two years."

Luc nodded in acknowledgment. "How do you know Wulf?"

"His agent suggested he attend our grand opening and he brought ten other models with him, a bunch of friends and one jackass lover who broke up with him right before we closed shop. Wulf was so torn up, Yvan and I took him upstairs and let him talk our ears off. He slept at our place for three days so he could avoid the guy. We've been tight ever since."

Luc stroked the lip of the highball glass. "Not that it's my business, but are you lovers?"

Trink brushed the backs of his fingers under his chin twice. Kelthian street people spoke in slang or with their hands. As the Harbinger, Luc had his own signals, well known on the street. This one meant "up yours" in the most polite sort of way.

"Why the call, Trink?"

"Wulf's in trouble."

Luc stilled himself, listening.

"When Yvan and I suggested he talk to you he smacked right out. Didn't know we knew you. Said he w—uh, well," Trink rubbed his neck. "Maybe you're better off not knowing what he said."

He decided against pushing for detail. "You thought I could help him."

"Yeah." He leaned one elbow on the table. "His agent's screwing him over. Agent's dad runs some kind of vid company Wulf wants to work for, but the guy won't hire him unless he signs with his son for five years. Agent threatened to blackball him. Ripped off his investments. Wulf's damn near broke, the way he tells it. I think there's more, but that's all he'd admit."

Luc sat back. "Any and all those things are easily remedied. If Wulf wants my help."

"Yeah, well..." Trink aligned two napkins with the infinite precision one gives to a task that delays the delivery of bad news. "He says you made him watch his father die."

The words struck like a blow to the chest. All these years and Wulf still didn't understand. He blew out a breath. "I'm sorry that's the way he remembers it."

"He didn't want me telling you any of this, but I can't stand to see a friend suffer."

Steepling his fingers, Luc sat back. "Can you get him to meet with me?"

"I'll talk to him. Not setting up anything he doesn't know about first. Just so we're clear—Yvan and I owe Wulf. He's brought us more business than we could hope to get on our own, just by showing up and bringing friends." Trink gestured around the room. "Our net worth is six times what it was when we first opened, 'cause of him. I know business. Yvan knows cooking. But Wulf—he knows people."

Luc would have to talk to his advisors about investing more. "Aside from all this—Have you and Yvan considered other locations?"

"Sure. But not at the expense of setting up Wulf, if that's what you're getting at."

"Certainly not. I know a bargain when I see one." Patting his fingertips together, Luc asked, "What made you decide to call?"

"Wulf made me promise not to talk to you, but I figured that meant he could. So if you thought it was him calling and you came here to see what he wanted..." He shrugged. "I could answer your questions and I wouldn't have called."

Luc toyed with the drink. "I appreciate your tactics but I would have kept your confidence."

"Yeah." Trink held the tray against his chest. "But I'd know that I called."

He lowered one brow. "You did call."

"Not technically."

As if the universe had suffered as harsh a blow as his heart #MMRomance #SciFi #MFRWhooks

Wulf, Tales of the Chosen MM Sci-Fi Romance #MMRomance #MMReads #SciFi

In this scene from Wulf, Luc is in his office when the new assistant he'd hired that day (the 6th in a long line of failures) enters. Note: this is Ms. Mead, whom you might recognize as the diminutive woman who later becomes Luc's right hand and trusted advisor, capable of managing Luc's enterprises on her own. But here, it's day one, and it's not looking good.

Now what?

"Excuse me, sir."

His concentration broken for the fifth time in as many minutes, Luc Saint-Cyr tossed aside his reading and leaned back in his desk chair. "Now what?"

The sixth person he'd hired this month to replace his former assistant stepped all the way inside, shut the door quietly, and approached his desk.

"I'm very sorry, sir. I know you didn't want to be disturbed for the next hour, but—"

He held up a hand to stop further apology. "What is it, Ms. Mead?"

"The gentleman on the holophone says it's urgent."

"They all say that."

"Sir, I know that. I'm a professional, but this —"

"Never mind." He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Who is it and what's so urgent?"

"All he would say was that his name was Wulf Gabriel and that—"

"What!" Luc shot to his feet, making the woman gasp, and sending his chair flying backward into the credenza. Books on its top tumbled to the floor. "Why didn't you say so?" He made shooing motions at the startled woman. "Put him through immediately."

Eyeing him as if he were some wild animal, Ms. Mead edged out the door and snapped it shut behind her.

Once alone, Luc opened a desk drawer and swept everything on his desk into it. He stepped one foot into the adjoining bathroom, grabbed a brush, and dragged it through his short hair. A quick feel of his chin told him he didn't need a shave yet.

He slipped back into his office, seated himself at the desk, and waited for the image to glow into existence. Luc saw Wulf every day on Imperinet. The young man's face was on half the dentist ads in the Empire, and most clothing commercials.

Luc envisioned the classic beauty of Wulf's face, the strength of his jaw, the warm whiskey brown of his eyes. On his dresser at home was a picture of himself with Wulf and his parents, taken days before Thomas Gabriel's death. Before all their lives had unraveled. Before he'd—

Focus.

Luc unclenched his fists and flattened his hands on the desk. Still no holo-image. The heap of untidy books on the floor drew his attention, but judging by the angle holopics usually took, Wulf wouldn't see them. How would it appear if the call started and he was on his knees on the floor with his ass in the air? Still... Luc rolled his chair back and pushed them out of sight with his foot.

No image yet.

Luc started to press the button on his desk to call Ms. Mead, but hovered one finger above it. What if she was putting Wulf through and mangled the connection because he'd distracted her?

He folded his hands again, and waited. On the floor by the right front leg of the credenza lay another book. He scooted his chair over and pushed at it with his foot, but it wedged itself between the legs and wouldn't budge.

The indicator on his desk still showed no sign of a call.

He loosened his collar, flicked at a speck of dust on the desk, and folded his hands once more. He rolled his thumbs around each other. He tightened his collar back up. Muttering curses, he got down on the floor and straightened the damned books, dusted himself off and sat back down.

The door opened and Ms. Mead crept far enough inside to shut it behind her. Head down, hands clutched in front of her, she wet her lips.

Luc stood and went around the desk. "You lost him! Don't tell me you lost him!"

"No, sir." Ms. Mead peeked up as he approached. "He told me to forget it. He said he'd changed his mind and it wasn't important."

Wasn't important... Brought up short by those words, Luc went so still the motes of dust in the air came into perfect clarity. As if the universe had suffered as harsh a blow as his heart. The first contact he'd had with Wulf in twenty years and it wasn't important.

He turned his back, shoulders rigid, jaw tight. "Did he say he'd call back?"

"Um, he..."

His breath felt shallow and too, too fast. He stopped himself from turning his head. "Go on, Ms. Mead."

She cleared her throat. "No, sir. The call came in on a private channel. I couldn't get a number to return it. I asked, but he wouldn't give me one. I was trying to track it when I realized I should let you know what happened. I'm sorry, sir."

He jammed his tongue against his teeth. Hands clenched at his sides, Luc turned his face enough to show he listened.

"I'll make sure he goes straight through if—I mean, when he calls back. Is there anyone else I should know about?"

Was there anyone else who could tear apart his life just by dropping a call? Not trusting his voice, he shook his head.

Behind him, the door opened, clicked shut. Footsteps receded. No outside noise intruded. The lonely silence of the oversized room rang in his ears like a death scream.

Luc staggered the ten steps to the windows overlooking Tarth City Park. Sunlight's radiant caress warmed and soothed his skin.

If only it could reach his heart.

In this world, trust is a weapon #SciFi #MMRomance #MFRWhooks

Wulf, Tales of the Chosen MM Sci-Fi Romance #MMRomance #MMReads #SciFi

In this scene from the opening of Wulf, the hero, Wulf Gabriel, has popped into Batchelors, a bar/restaurant owned by his friends, Trink and Yvan. But when he told them what was going on, they suggested talking to Luc Saint-Cyr, who is an investor in their restaurant. Wulf flips out and tries to walk away, leaving Trink and Yvan confused and concerned.

Let Us Help

"Wulf." Trink and Yvan both leaned against the front of the desk to face him. "Let us help you, Bro. We can call the Man. I know he's got the power. Hell, he owns everything on Kelthia and half of Tarth. This whole district owes him."

"Thanks, guys, but there's got to be another way." He dusted off his pants. "I should go." When he stood, Trink took hold of his arm.

"What is it, Wulf? What you not tawkin', huh? Me and Yvan." He gestured among them. "You know we got your back. You can tell us anything."

"Thanks, Trink." He situated himself so he wasn't being touched, hopefully smoothly enough not to offend. "Don't want to talk about it."

Yvan started to speak.

"Guys." Wulf held up both hands. "I appreciate the advice and the offer to help, but the last thing I want is to involve Luc Saint-Cyr. The Harbinger, the Man, whatever you want to call him. If I'd known you'd suggest anything that had to do with him, I never would've come here. No offense." He ducked around Yvan.

Blocking him, Yvan leaned a hand against the door, then swung around and leaned against it, arms folded.

Wulf sighed. "Don't do this, Yvan."

"Doin' nothing, Bro. Jes standin'. Whyn't you talk to Trink?"

"Yeah, Bro." Trink spread both hands. "Let us help."

Pressing his lips together, Wulf concentrated on breathing through his nose, focusing on a dark spot on the wall.

"Listen, Wulf," Trink dropped his street voice. "If you let that asshole fuck you like this you'll kick yourself for it."

He closed his eyes, jaw clenching. "Back off, Trink."

"People always say that to me, Wulf, but truth is I can't. I'm your friend. Friends help friends."

Wulf leveled his gaze on the man's face. "I appreciate your concern, but I'll handle it."

Yvan tilted his head. "We're trying to help you."

"Thank you. Really. Thank you." Wulf tucked his fingertips into the front pockets of his jeans. "Now back off and let me out of here."

Yvan stared into his eyes for a long moment, not blinking any more than Wulf. "After you tell me one thing."

Wulf ground his teeth together. "What?"

"Why you so dead set against the Man's help?"

"His help?" Wulf pressed his lips together, shaking his head. "I would rather die than ask that fucker's help."

You'd have thought he'd blasphemed. Trink crossed himself and Yvan slid aside like he expected a lightning strike.

"You think I'm crazy? How's this? If Luc Saint-Cyr was on fire, I wouldn't cross the street to piss on him."

Their mouths dropped open.

"You want to know why I hate, loathe, and detest Luc Saint-Cyr? When I was ten years old"— Wulf slammed one fist into the other "—he made me watch my father die."

Surrender Love: Antonello Brothers: Immortal #SciFi #MMRomance

In this scene from Surrender Love, Izzorah had been tossing and turning in bed, wound up over meeting Luc Saint-Cyr, the head of the company where his band would sign a five-year contract. Terrified he'd make a mistake and reveal he was unworthy, he flings himself out of bed and gets into the shower. The hot water has relaxed him, and he's indulging in a favorite fantasy...

Humans thought Kin males were all big predatory cats. Alphas.

Maybe in those vids they advertised to human females, but not in real life. Not on a world where males were property and warriors were female.

Izzorah slid a hand down his chest, over his pelt, down his abs, imagining himself as property of a predatory alpha...

A human male gripped both wrists and pinned Izzorah to the wall like a trophy. "What are you doing, my young Kin? Are you fantasizing?"

Snarling, Izzorah released claws and bared fangs, but the human stayed beyond reach. It was dark, and none of the man's features showed. Against this kind of strength and at such an angle, he had no defense. He forced his claws from their sheaths but couldn't reach skin. He growled, twisting. It hurt his wrists, and he yelped.

"Easy. Stop thrashing and I won't hold you so tight."

With abrupt resignation, Izzorah ceased fighting. He sheathed his claws, looking up with a submissive smile. Open. Trusting. Giving.

"That's much better." The human gentled his touch, loosening his gloved hands. "I won't hurt you." A whiff of mint revealed the man's amusement, but there was no cruelty. The man meant him no harm. "You have nothing to fear from me."

Baked bread with cinnamon wafted into the air. Contentment. Few knew how to hide emotion from a Kin. No one hid it from Izzorah.

Naked, helpless in the human's hands, he shivered despite the heat roaring through his body. He lowered his ears in submission, his gaze down in respect. One did not meet a warrior's gaze without permission and what was this human if not a warrior?

He would be safe with this man.

"Hands above your head." The man's deep voice sounded the way velvet felt on the fingertips. He slid Izzorah's hands upward. It opened him and arched him toward the human. "Look at me."

He obeyed, a cross between fear and desire making him pant.

His name was a lie. It meant nothing #MMRomance #SciFi #MFRWhooks

Surrender Love: Antonello Brothers: Immortal #SciFi #MMRomance

In this scene from Surrender Love, Luc is en route to what he assumes will be just another day at the office. But a meeting will take place that changes his life forever. Here, he's musing in the back of his hoversine while his android driver ferries him through the city.

A Remembered Past

This early in the day, traffic in the city was as light as Luc's earlier mood had been. He ought to have used the travel time for work, but he became an errant student staring out the windows. Traffic slowed as the vehicle approached Cyr de Typhin Bridge. The massive stone lions guarding its entry hearkened back to the bridge's opening. Named for him in a different life, he never crossed it without remembering a past filled with glorious accomplishment and purpose.

As de Typhin, he had designed the city's layout, still in use as a blueprint. Tarth City Park had been his crowning achievement. But how many knew he'd built a secret warren of tunnels beneath the park and a bolt hole in the bridge's base? The human builders had long since died, taking their secrets to the grave. Luc refused to succumb to his usual melancholy at the thought and just enjoyed the job well done.

The vehicle floated across the bridge, past pillars displaying carved symbols, each representing one of his former lives. The Chosen, mortals who served the immortal Sempervians, had arranged the design. The day he'd stood at the entrance for the grand opening ceremony, he'd been told that within the week, Pietas had need of him elsewhere. De Typhin would have to "die" and be reborn with a new life on a different world, with a new persona and name.

After de Typhin met his abrupt and "tragic" end, the city hurried to rename multiple sites after him, including the churning Typhin River beneath the bridge. Its frothy water bisected the entire park which ran the length of the city. The so-called tragedy of de Typhin's short life had led to his work as another Tarthian hero, Ran Holding.

He still marveled at how he'd gone from city builder to cattle farmer and then from farmer right back to the city as the Grand Master of the Thieves' Guild on Kelthia. The Neene Saint-Thomas Thieves' Training Center, known affectionately as the Neener, bore that name. Landmarks throughout the city honored many Sempervians. By combining multiple lives over the previous centuries, they had made Tarth City a showcase in the Empire.

Except for the Chosen--the countless mortals who labored beside them--humans were still unaware they worked alongside immortals. Even when Dessy won a second life as Conqueror and established herself as her own long-lost daughter, no one guessed. She'd now been empress three times. Major sites around the city bore names from her past lives.

Luc's own second stint in a row as head of the Thieves' Guild drew no attention. Only one pair of mortals outside the Chosen had noticed, but his long relationship with them had won solid allegiance. They told no one, and likewise, he hid their awareness. Better no other immortals know someone had witnessed the passing of power from one life to another.

But in this beautiful city he loved so much, what had been named after former-thief, playboy, entrepreneur Luc Saint-Cyr? So far, a wing of the engineering college at Tarth Tech, for which he had paid dearly, and a library for the science department. Even the lofty Nizamrak Building did not bear his name. Oh, investors had tried to name it after him, but he was having none of that. The letters in Nizamrak meant something to him. His name meant nothing.

It wasn't even really his.

Izzorah swallowed, fighting to vanquish his fear #MMRomance #SciFi #MFRWhooks

Surrender Love: Antonello Brothers: Immortal #SciFi #MMRomance

In this scene from Surrender Love, Izzorah is on the run. He's the drummer for a famous rock band, but he terrified of heights -- with a capital T. When the group entered into the Nizamrak Building, tallest on the planet, Izzorah took two big steps back and ran. Now he's trying to figure out where he is, which is difficult, because he can't focus on anything farther away than his own fingertips.

Running Away

How far? How far? Izzorah swallowed, fighting to control his stomach and vanquish his fear.

It was just after dawn and the open air and distant bounce of sound meant he was in a clearing with no people-scents. The assistive device embedded in his stud earring made a soft tink, showing the directions he'd requested were active. A brief hum meant forward and he walked in that direction.

A high-pitched ting for an upcoming turn sounded, followed by a low tong. He turned left. Another turn warning came, then a low pong and he turned right. The hum kept him going straight.

The short, tinny plink that came next meant he'd arrived and the low pong meant the door was on the right. He fumbled for an entry panel until he realized the door had sensed him and opened. Trace levels of human scent meant people had been here but had gone.

"Welcome to the Bank of Tarth," chimed a genderless but pleasant electronic voice. The buzz-clink in his earring meant the bank's AI had connected with it. "Automated tellers are available now. How may we serve you?"

"Washroom, please."

"Gender-oriented restrooms are at each end. The central restroom is neutral. Straight ahead, then right after the main console."'

His earring directed him to the washrooms with no difficulty. Once inside, he bolted into a stall. He barely had time to lock the door before his stomach revolted against the meager breakfast he'd eaten.

He'd refused food until Kory insisted, claiming they had a big day with important people to see and places to go. Which was why Izzorah had tried to avoid eating.

Once he'd caught his breath, he opened the stall door. "Where's the sink?"

His earring hummed, and he took a few steps forward. White against dark showed him the shape, and he rinsed his mouth, then splashed water on his face.

He pulled off the earring and dried it, fastened it back. Not for the first time, he wished he'd had one while crossing Felidae on his bid for freedom. He'd covered half the planet on horseback. Unable to see stars or horizon, he'd depended on sunrise and sunset, an old compass, his wits, memory, courage and above all, the stubborn horse he'd had since he was a teen. Purkinje wouldn't have liked it in the empire, but his four-legged friend had gotten him across Felidae and saved his life. For that, Izzorah would always be grateful.

A plain silver dot that hooked to his ear might get him places, but it didn't keep him company or carry him. It couldn't shade him when he napped, and he couldn't sleep next to it for warmth on a chilly night.

What it could do was get him back to the hotel before the guys found him. Probably. Hopefully.

This was the longest life he’d ever lived. Warriors rarely made it to old age #SciFi #Romance #MFRWhooks

Surrender Love: Antonello Brothers: Immortal #SciFi #MMRomance

In this scene from Surrender Love, Luc is doing a favor for the Empress, a fellow immortal, but his heart isn't in it.

Unwanted Meetings

With breakfast behind him, Luc tapped a vid-link. "Good morning, James. We'll use the party hoversine today. Since we're representing the Empress, replace the Lucsondis flags with hers."

"Right away, sir." The android shot him a salute and signed off.

If the Empress expected Luc to impress the governor of Notidisia, the holographic disguise should help. Flying royal flags meant his long black party hoversine would appear as a light armored Tyssen Battle Hover. From outside, no one would realize it wasn't what it looked like: a green-and-brown camouflaged troop carrier with the cargo capacity of a thimble. Because his vehicle carried her personal approval within its codes, every security barrier at the starport would accept him, including the Praetorian cohort guarding the royal gate.

In the breaking dawn, Luc strolled along the pool on his penthouse roof. He took advantage of the rooftop's shields and swam every day he could, all year long. The cool morning air helped him focus and offered calm before the storm of his day. The pool's still water reflected the vivid orange and crimson gleaming in the sunrise. He paused beside it, allowing the quiet to infuse his senses.

As he reached down to touch the water, a vibration sent a shiver across the surface, announcing the hoversine.

Luc headed back toward the wide landing platform on the other side. He arrived as the camouflaged vehicle rose above the edge of the building. Black flags emblazoned with Destoiya's clenched white fist snapped in the wind, even though the air was calm. No one seeing this would realize it wasn't what it resembled.

The vehicle settled onto the ground and James exited, sharp as always in his black chauffeur's uniform. He opened the rear door. "Good morning, sir."

"James." Luc ducked into the roomy interior with its spacious, reclining seats and the full bar of a party hoversine. He settled back, stretching his legs, but upon recalling what his empress required, he sat up, ramrod straight.

Intimidate a woman.

How revolting.

Most times, his stature and solid black eyes intimidated on their own. He stood a head taller than the average person.

Owing loyalty to both the Empress of Tarth and the Sempervian king plunked Luc right in the middle of their power struggle. This time, they both wanted the same thing. He could not play one against the other or use his considerable leverage with either to do things his way.

Earlier in this lifetime, he'd earned a name for ruthlessness as the Harbinger. People feared him. The Harbinger would not think twice about intimidating anyone.

Did people fear Luc Saint-Cyr? Only in business.

They envied more than feared his shrewd business acumen, knack for buying at the right moment, multiple trusts and charitable foundations.

His people guided humanity to keep them safe. Sempervians used their accumulated wealth and combined talents to protect the weak. To stand in solidarity with an ally.

So why not use diplomacy for this?

Perhaps Pietas was right. He'd grown soft. This was the longest life he'd ever lived. Living forever did not mean you got old.

Sempervians were warriors.

Warriors died young.

Luc pressed fingertips against brow, fighting the onset of a headache. He might have to obey, but he didn't have to like it.

Uh oh. The power went out and the guards are MIA ⚡🚓 #SciFi #MMRomance #MFRWhooks

Wulf, Tales of the Chosen MM Sci-Fi Romance #MMRomance #MMReads #SciFi

Luc had brought Wulf home with him to protect him from a threat. As the Harbinger, Luc has a well-won reputation in the widespread world of the Thieves' Guild. Anyone  foolish enough to attack him would be swiftly dealt with. In this scene in Luc's home, Luc and Wulf are awakened by someone breaking into their bedroom. Though Luc is armed and ready to shoot, it turns out to be his son, who's come to warn them the power is out and the guards protecting the house are all dead.

Escape Plan

How Luc hated it when he was right about things going wrong. He'd planned for big trouble; hoped for an easy solution.

Wulf stared at Senthys with a blank expression that faded to one of terror. He lurched backwards, glancing about the room like a rabbit with foxes after him.

Luc dashed forward and dragged Wulf up against his chest. "Easy, love. It's all right. I won't let anyone hurt you."

The younger man trembled, but he drew himself up and controlled his chattering teeth. "I—I'm okay. You take care of S-Senthys."

"Hey." Senthys winked at him. "Don't worry about me." He gave him thumbs up. "But you might want to get some clothes on."

Luc handed Wulf his pants. "Shirt and shoes too. We may have to run for it." Luc added his own shirt. "Now you see why I always fold my clothes. Easier to dress and run."

"Run where?" Senthys folded his arms. "There's no way out from up here except the windows in the other rooms."

"You knew we were trapped in here but you came anyway?"

Senthys frowned at him. "What was I supposed to do, leave you? You're my dad."

Luc slipped on his shoes. "We'll talk about safety later." He tucked the weapon in his pants pocket, opened the drawer, and pulled out an extra power clip. "Wulf, do you know how to shoot?"

"I could learn."

"That's my boy. You may have to. I don't want to arm Senthys if I don't have to."

"What!" Senthys faced him. "I can fire a weapon. I've had training. He hasn't."

"And if I need you to shoot I'll give you a gun without hesitation, but I don't want to jeopardize your guild standing if I don't have to."

The Guild took a dim view of using a weapon except in self-defense. Armed robbery, at least on Kelthia, didn't exist. A sad truth that had come about after the death of Wulf's father.

"Wulf, love, open the closet door. Go to the third set of shoe cubbies on the left, then the fourth cubby up from the bottom right. Reach into the back and push."

The rear of the closet swiveled open.

"Oh, cool!" Senthys rubbed his hands together. "A secret passageway."

"Senthys, you lead the way. Here." He tossed him a flashlight from the drawer. "No noise."

"Yes, sir."

Wulf followed him without prompting.

Luc closed the outer closet door, entered the narrow brick passageway, and shut the secret door behind him. A smooth passageway tilted down. Luc brought up the rear.

Wulf waited for him ahead. "So much 'not even Senthys could get in here tonight.'"

"Shh." Luc raised a finger to his lips. "Wulf," he whispered, "would you kindly keep in mind a killer's in the house searching for us at this very moment? Keep your voice down."

At the bottom of the stairs, Senthys stopped before a metal door. "I've never seen so many locks in one place before."

"Excuse me." Luc turned sideways to fit into the cramped space and moved around Wulf. To dry his fingertips, Luc brushed them against his pants and then stroked the topmost lock. "Senthys, hold the light."

"Yes, sir. What system is this?"

He keyed a pattern on the second lock. "A Cyr de Tomasson. Very old, made before the planet Kelthia was part of the Tarthian Empire." He caught Wulf's knowing smile over Senthys' head. Luc had been Cyr de Tomasson in a previous life. This was his invention.

"Wow." Senthys squinted at the locks. "I never thought I'd get to see one of these. Was de Tomasson related to you?"

Luc fumbled the lock sequence and had to start over. "What in the worlds made you think that?"

"The 'Cyr' in the name. Seems like a lot of Kelthian history is about people with that name. I run into it all the time when I'm researching the guild archives for Grand Master de Laney."

Senthys shone the light on the last lock. "Did you put this thing down here?"

Luc hesitated. "It came with the house." Not a total lie. He'd built the house too, in another life.

"Don't you think it's time to upgrade?"

"Modern thieves have no idea how to operate the system. It isn't just a series of locks, Senthys. There are small switches and catches as well." He released the final lock. "Virtually pick-proof. It's safe to say no one in the union these days could break into it."

"Then how did you manage it so smoothly?"

Luc pulled open the door, took the light from his son, and shone it up on his own face. "I'm the Harbinger, remember?" He used the light to indicate the opening. "Let's go."

This idBot of yours is invading everything #Excerpt from A Stolen Heart #SciFi

Let idBot get the door

Is it true that idBot sees everything? In this scene, Luc is about to enter an elevator/lift in the Thieves' Guild. The elevator car moves up, down, and sideways to traverse the huge building. He's on his way to an important meeting.

idBot sees everything

After Luc left Tonio's office, he visited the Arcane Level library on the thirtieth floor, checking data to prepare for his meeting with Ms. Lexius. He headed for his office, but when the elevator opened, Grand Master Aerlray de Clare stood inside.

Luc repeated his mantra. Focus, not dwell. Move forward. Gathering his patience, Luc entered and pressed the button for his floor. "Aerlray."

"Luc Saint-Cyr." The man smiled like a predator. "The man I'm looking for."

"Oh?" Luc kept his back to the doors. "Why's that?"

"It's been brought to my attention idBot's poking its nose into our files."

"Is that so?" Floor numbers in idBot green scrolled around the top of the car as it moved downward. Ten floors to the first turn. "That phrase 'idBot sees everything' is literal."

"But it's scanning confidential data. Contracts. Personnel. Sealed adoptions."

And why was he trying to hide those? "IdBot needs to know what it's protecting."

"A lock on a door doesn't need to know what's behind the door."

"IdBot's more than a lock. It gathers intel about its surroundings. It's a living, breathing system that can actively protect its owner." He owed Shohn Lexius for that tidbit.

"I don't care about any of that." De Clare puffed himself up. "I want it to stop. Now. Pull idBot back from this invasive search, Saint-Cyr. It's setting a dangerous precedent. The Guild won't tolerate it."

He'd switched to using last names. Interesting.

Three floors.

"Aelray, if you think a threat will deter me, you don't know me."

"No threat." De Clare held up both hands. "But this idBot of yours is meddling where it doesn't belong."

"Oh?" The car slowed, shifted direction sideways. "What is there to hide?"

De Clare pointed at him. "I'm not the only councilmember who dislikes these invasive searches. This could have serious consequences if it came to a vote."

Good. Let it. "Why are you telling me this?"

"Because you own idBot."

"Let's say a tech company hires one of our people. Signs a contract for corporate espionage, but it's bungled. Things go badly. What's the procedure for a complaint?"

De Clare stepped back. "Why are you asking me? You know the procedure."

"That's right. I do." The car slowed, headed down again. "Procedure doesn't say 'go to the Grand Master and whine."

"What's your point?"

"When the Guild installed idBot, it came with a book of procedures in case anything went wrong. I didn't write the book, but I can guarantee you that nowhere in it does it suggest hassling members of the board or the owner."

The man stiffened, mouth set in a straight line. His usual cocky self had deteriorated into a petulant boy. "Are you going to stand there and tell me this isn't your doing?"

"What isn't my doing?"

The elevator made the last turn to the side, bypassing the Heart of the Guild. Not unlike de Clare, who could not seem to grasp the heart of the organization.

"Look, Saint-Cyr." De Clare arranged his robes of office. "This idBot of yours is poking through employee files, intake records, and financial statements. It's rifling through everything."

Excellent. More proof. Luc bared his teeth in a pseudo-smile. "You mean it's searching databases in order to back them up and provide security for every aspect of the facility?" The car slowed. The doors opened and Luc took one step outside. He wedged a foot to block the elevator from closing.

"That's exactly what I mean!" Spittle showed at the corners of de Clare's mouth. He took a full step back, shoulders against the wall. "I want it to stop." He jabbed a finger toward Luc. "Now!"

Luc released the doors. "Then call the Help Desk."
