First Command by Jay A Toney #SciFi #SpaceOpera #MilSF

First Command

Failure is not an option.

Bartholomew Roberts is retiring, leaving his son in command of the Queen Anne's Revenge. It is his first command, and it may be his last. The Alliance will do everything in their power to ensure that he fails.

Failure in the Alliance is not tolerated. If Doc Roberts is lucky, they will hang him. If not, he will be sent to a reeducation center, mind-wiped, and a control collar will be placed around his neck.

Then he'll be paraded in the streets of Avalon's capital city as an example of what happens to people who fail in their missions.

He can't afford to fail!

The Last Vhalgenn

When you've sacrificed your life, what more can you offer?

Duty, honor, and ritual rule her life, but one of these may kill her.

The Vhalgenn is the last of her kind, a companion bred to serve the king. Duty and honor burn in her blood. When the queen begs for a secret blessing to save her newborn son, the Vhalgenn answers.

But when she takes the babe to the queen's homeland for the ritual, what she discovers could topple the kingdom and overthrow her beloved king.

To save the newborn prince, the Vhalgenn must abandon every last truth she holds sacred, and do the one thing that will destroy her own heart...

Books in this series include The Last Vhalgenn and Trailing Kaiwulf. Links below.

Tropes include: Loyalty, Honor, Duty, Compassion, Ancient Customs, Old Ways, Woman Warrior, Forbidden Love

In this scene, the queen has called Raik to her bedside and presented her newborn son. The woman's dying wish is for Raik to perform a ritual, which must be accomplished in the queen's homeland.

Excerpt

I pulled the babe closer and crept backwards, muttering a prayer. I bumped into a wall, turned and threw aside the curtain. A barefoot wisp of a girl sat huddled in the corner, arms around her chest, knees up and skirt over them. Her huge brown eyes were wide and solemn. She unfolded herself and stood. Heavy breasted, she had a slim waist and thick legs. She opened her blouse and held out her hands for the babe. He rooted noisily and latched on to nurse with a satisfied grunt. She smiled down at him.

"A bit young, aren't you?"

She tossed her hair. "I've had seventeen summers, and this ain't the first babe I've e'er given suck."

"What's your name?"

"Estria Luvas."

"Luvas? Clan Ddumach?" My kin. I grunted. Would the women of my clan ever change? Rebels, the lot of us.

Queen Dahr's lady returned with a bundle of clothes. "Here. You'll need to dress and ride. I've a horse ready in the stables and the girl has all the prince needs."

The prince? Orix had been the prince when I was growing up. Even though he was weaned and a toddler when I was born, he'd insisted on trying out what seemed to satisfy his Vhalgenn. We'd shared my mother's milk until I was two and he was four. I wondered which female child of my clan would be given to Dahryc. Estria's perhaps?

I had no time for pondering it then, with the need to hurry prodding me. I stripped off my robe and dressed in the clothes they'd provided. At least they hadn't given me skirts. There was a black shirt, vest, and a coat of leather and heavy woolen pants lined with silk. My own boots, cleaned and polished, went on over clean socks. I strapped on my sword and the belt in which I carried my daggers. The other weapons I hid about my person, much to the amusement of Estria.

"A walkin' blade, you are."

"And don't forget it. Do you have shoes? And a cloak?"

"I'm not soft."

"Can you run over rocks with bare feet?"

She stuck one up. The bottom was more callused than my sword hand.

"Suit yourself, but you'll wear a cloak and no argument. It's cold in the hills and you'll need to cover the babe if it rains."

She growled under her breath. "But unly for 'is sake."

I grabbed up two thick cloaks, wrapped the heaviest around the girl, and tossed the other around my shoulders. In the dark stable yard below, I mounted up, putting the girl in front of me. Dahr's woman assured me we'd be met on the North Road with two fresh mounts and further supplies.

Reins in hand, I settled onto the horse. The animal tossed its head, hot breath sending clouds of mist into the night air.

Dahr's Lady in Waiting handed me up a packet. "Papers in case you need to cross at a border."

"Well planned for such a sudden thing."

"And who do ye suppose arranged for you to bring back dispatches? She feared she was dying and knew you, of all people, would serve the king's heir. She knew you'd let no harm come to him."

I reined in the impatient horse and steadied Estria with an arm around her waist.

"She even chose one of your clan, to honor you."

I had my doubts about that, but kept them to myself. It was our custom to choose a woman from my clan to bear the Vhalgenn for the heir. Just as it was theirs to pass their children through these cursed Gates that I was being sent off in the middle of the night to find.

I nodded to her. The woman stepped aside. We were off.

Trailing Kaiwulf

A pair of bounty hunters (a big guy who's the brains, and a tiny woman who's the brawn) set out to find a missing person last spotted by an archaeologist on an alien world. The problem?

The missing person is in another dimension. Oh yeah -- and he's invisible.

They literally didn't see that coming.

When Jee and Dane take on this top priority mission, the pay is better than they've earned before as agents for the Trace, Rescue, and Identification League. After this, they might not need jobs. They're the best there is, and the person, item, or secret hasn't been invented that these two can't recover. Until now.

After all, how do you find an invisible man in another dimension? The archaeologist in charge can't afford this fee, and the military would just take over.

So the real question is: who -- or what -- is behind the request to trail Kaiwulf?

Tropes include: Older Woman Younger Man, Bounty Hunters, Invisibility, Ancient Ruins

In this scene, our two bounty hunters have discovered more about their mission, and are now retiring to their room for the night.

Excerpt

"How are we supposed to go to another dimension?" Jee tossed her knapsack on the floor and dropped onto her cot. Crossing her ankles, she folded her hands across her waist. Above her, the ceiling fan trailed dust webs as it turned. She swatted at a buzzing insect and reached back to pull the pillow under her head. "I can't figure this one."

Across the room, behind a hanging sheet, Dane yelped. Slap! "Watch out for those buzzing things. They bite."

She slapped at one. After a moment, she turned over. "You got any ideas?"

"About how to track an invisible man in another dimension?"

"That's the general problem, yeah."

"Nada, Jee. I could resign. Work for a living."

"What, you mean get a real job?"

Dane slapped at a bug. "Beats this."

"Be serious."

"I am serious. At least your feet stay under the covers. I hang over the end of every bed I sleep in except my own. I'm tired of it."

Dane had propped his feet on a chair at the end of the cot. They showed past the end of the sheet hanging between them. Dr. Post had apologized for not realizing TRAIL was sending agents of the opposite sex. No other quarters existed, but they'd slept in one another's company for years, with no problem. On a hunt, you snoozed where and when you could. Jee felt safer with Dane than without him.

"It's like this." She tucked an arm under her head. "With the kind of money we'll get from this job, you can buy dozens of portable custom-made beds. We could cash out. Put that money in savings and live off the interest. You could pay off your house. Stay home and play with the kids."

"Good as that sounds, I can't imagine retiring, Jee."

"I know. But we have to think of some way to find this guy. Come on. You're the brains of this duo."

Dane snorted. "Right. You think it's so easy, you come up with something. And since when am I the 'brains' anyway? You're smart."

"You only tell me I'm smart when you're stuck for an idea."

"I asked you for an idea back on... on... uh..." Dane's voice dropped. "I think it was... uh..."

Jee snickered. "Like I said."

To save his brother, Khyff must seduce and then betray an alien ambassador whose people devastated his family.

Hatred for the aliens burns within him, but unless Khyff learns to embrace the past, faces the demons he swore he'd forget, and finds a way to forgive, his brother will die.

But how can he hope for a happy ever after, when his hidden truth is her people's hidden lie...

Tropes include: Forced Proximity, Feminist Sci-Fi, Rescue, Redemption, Found Family, Wounded Hero, Alien Heroine

After a brief misunderstanding, Mehfawni tries to get Khyff to relax, and suggests a bath.

Excerpt

Khyff slid down in the oversize tub and leaned back into Mehfawni's arms the way she'd requested. He eased himself into her embrace, his head against her shoulder.

She wrapped her arms around him and kissed his cheek. "Isn't that better?"

"Mmm." It was nice having her hands slide across his wet skin. So far, she'd never touched him with her claws extended. So far.

"Close your eyes."

"Why?"

"Easy, Khyff." She stroked her hands down his arms. "Relax. Lie back. You don't have to be afraid. I promise, nothing will happen to you that you don't like."

A bit late for that. Mehfawni skimmed her fingers across his brow and pulled back his hair. That felt good. He settled more into place.

"You like that?"

"Mmm."

She toyed with his hair, drawing it back from his face. He rubbed his nose.

"You have such cute little ears." She traced the outside edge of one. "I grew up learning to read people's ears, but humans are a total mystery to me. Your ears don't move at all."

"The better to hear you with, my dear."

Fawni stopped stroking him. "Ah fay?"

He turned his head toward her voice. "It's a line from an old fairy tale."

"What are fairy tales?"

"Children's stories. Make-believe stories that teach a lesson."

"Kin have these. We call them drahee. The word drah means story. When you add ee to a word, it means little." He felt the vibration of her voice. "Tell me one of your stories. The one about ears."

Khyff stretched into the hot water, resting his arms along Mehfawni's legs. Her furskin made her smoother than a human female. His slid his palms across her shins and down around her calves.

"This young girl goes to visit her grandmother, who's sick."

Mehfawni's breath warmed his ear. "What's wrong with her?"

"Who?"

"The grandmother."

"I don't know, Fawni. It's part of the story."

"Oh." She nuzzled his ear. "Go on."

"Anyway, the girl has a large basket with books in it and--"

"Books? You mean printed ones like Kin use? Not the pretend kind you humans read on your debit bracelets."

"Uh...I guess so."

"Why is she carrying around heavy books? Aren't the books on debit bracelets easier to read? I think I'd prefer those myself."

Khyff leaned away from her so she could see his face. "You're supposed to listen to the story, Fawni. It doesn't matter what format the books are in. It's just something for her to carry for the sake of the story. It could have been food or some other thing."

"Oh." Her ears went out. "Sorry."

"She's taking the books to her grandmother, I guess so she'll have stories to read while she's in bed recovering. On the way, she meets an android who offers to carry the heavy basket, but the girl says she doesn't need help. This makes the android angry, so he--"

"I thought androids had controls to prevent anger."

He trailed his fingers along her thighs. "They do, but this android must've been broken or something. Anyway, he takes a shortcut to the grandmother's house, lifts the sick old woman out of her bed, and puts her in a closet."

"In a closet? Why doesn't she get back out?"

"She was sick, remember?"

"Yes, but she could have opened the door and crawled. How sick was she?"

Khyff took a deep breath. "May I continue?"

"Go on. Sorry."

"The android changes form and makes himself look like the grandmother."

"This is a very odd story, Khyffy. When does the ear part happen?"

"I'm getting to that. The girl sees right away that her grandmother looks different and asks why her eyes are so bright. The android realizes he forgot to change his eyes and says, 'The better to see you with, my dear.' And then the girl says, 'Grandmother, your ears are too big.' And the android thinks maybe he's not good at changing form and says, 'The better to hear you with, my dear.'"

"Most peculiar. What does she do next? Does she ever find out it's the android?"

"Patience, Fawni." He rested his hands on her shins. "By this time the girl is suspicious and says, 'Grandmother, why are your fingers so long?' and the android says, 'The better to grab you with, my dear,' and then he grabs her!"

Khyff seized her ankles, and Mehfawni jumped and squealed, then burst out laughing. They both chuckled.

She tugged a lock of his hair. "And what happened to the girl?"

"The android's owner burst in through the door at that moment. He aimed a remote at the android and powered him down. Then he got the grandmother out of--"

She made tsking sounds. "I do not like this story, Khyffy."

"What?" He leaned his head back against her. "Why not?"

"It would never be told on Felidae."

He sat up and twisted around to face her in the tub. "Why not?"

"A male rescuing a female?" Her laughter sounded like a cat hissing. "Not believable."

"What's so unbelievable about that? Humans have told that story for hundreds of years. Maybe even thousands."

"Humans, yes." She covered her mouth and laughed some more.

"How would the Kin tell this story?"

"It would be a boy taking the sick grandfather food to eat, not books to read. And instead of a mean android, we would have a kweeoh eat the grandfather and then dress in his clothes and await the boy."

He twisted his mouth. "Oh, like that would ever happen. Kweeohs are twice my size. The boy would have to be blind not to see it wasn't his grandfather. And that would be way too violent for kids. We have the android scare the girl."

"Kin females would not be scared of an android."

"You jumped, didn't you?"
