In a school filled with hackers and thieves, how do you trust your heart?
In this scene from A Divided Heart, Headmaster Kam has invited Professor Brinn to dinner. Brinn accepts, but only after Kam agrees that dinner means nothing more than dinner.
Dinner went well. The food was amazing and the service excellent. He and Kam had much in common and found it easy to chat about small things. And then the server brought out the dessert. The biggest, darkest, richest slab of chocolate cake on the planet. Maybe the whole Empire.
Fork in hand, Kam looked down at the plate. "I think this is big enough for four people."
Brinn picked up his fork. "I don't mind eating for two if you don't." He dug into the cake. The first bite melted in his mouth, creamy and decadent. He groaned. "On second thought, I could eat for three."
Kam stuck his fork into the middle of the dessert. "Fighting words if ever I heard them."
"This is too good to fight over. We'll have to agree to eating half, and then we'll each lick our own side."
Kam's eyes flashed. "All I heard in that sentence was the word lick."
Laughing, Brinn filled up a forkful and offered it to Kam.
With his gaze locked on Brinn's, Kam stroked the bottom of the fork with his tongue and drew the treat into his mouth.
Heat rushed to Brinn's head...and other extremities.
So much for just dinner.

In this scene from Wulf, book 1 in the Tales of the Chosen series, Wulf and Luc have just arrived on the planet Kelthia. After reaching Luc's home and meeting Luc's teenaged son, Senthys, Wulf is hanging out while father and son talk. The teen had been tossed out of the Academy, and Luc had been required to hop between planets to deal with it. Meanwhile, Wulf has discovered a place to chill and watch a game.
Wulf seated himself on the sofa and put his feet up. So, this was the Harbinger's home? It was like his own house had been, growing up. Nothing fancy. Plain slip-covered furniture. Not even a big screen to watch. Couldn't be more than 50 or 60 inches, tradestandard.
He aimed the remote and went googly-eyed at the porn that came on the screen. Something about a female copbot strip-searching two female criminals. He snickered. "Something tells me our Senthys has been a very naughty boy lately."
He surfed around a bit until he found his favorite sports channel, and then settled in to watch a live rematch between the Tarthian Fists and the Kelthian Killers.
The game was already past half-time but he didn't bother restarting it. The Fist offense had set up O'Brady Tyrell with the ruckball and he was running for the end zone. Killer Ensak Ssarg came out of nowhere and tackled him. They rolled out of bounds then back in as they fought for the ball.
Wulf swung his legs over the side and turned up the volume. "Tyrell! Don't you let that asshole get the ball!"
The wrestling aspect went on for almost two minutes, with neither side gaining an advantage. Finally, Ssarg threw himself over the ball. Tyrell grabbed the edge of his helmet and yanked him up and off it, kicked the ball over the end zone and threw both hands in the air at the same time as the referee.
Wulf jumped up. "Touchdown!" The holocam focused on Ssarg and Tyrell, who had gone back to wrestling in the grass. "Hot damn. I love a good fight." He perched on the edge of the couch to watch.
A boom of thunder rattled the vase on a table. Wulf turned down the sound and listened but heard no other sounds of a storm. He turned the volume back up and followed the game as referees pulled Ssarg and Tyrell apart.
Both players were penalized for fighting after touchdown--ten seconds time taken off both their record times for the season. "Damn. That much could cost 'em contract money." He popped up and went hunting for a snack while the local announcers argued over who should have lost more time.
He found the kitchen, pulled a soda out of the cupboard, and popped the top. It chilled instantly in his hand. He grabbed a bag of chips from the counter and did a double take at the type.
"Sweet potato chips? Prolly organic on top of it." He tossed them back on the counter and headed back to watch some more.
Tyrell was back in the game, running all out for a touchdown when here came Ssarg again.
"Oh, shit. I don't believe it. Those two always play like they're the only ones on the field." Tyrell was twenty tradestandard yards from a touchdown when Ssarg tackled him around the legs. They both went down hard, totally out of bounds this time.
Ssarg slammed both fists into Tyrell's chest. Wulf felt the ground shake as if he were there. "Ouch! That had to hurt."
Referees stood by, watching to ensure the fight stayed within rules. Ssarg had been known to draw blood on more than one occasion. Some idiots in the bleachers were chanting, "Ssarg, Ssarg, Ssarg." How stupid could they get? That game was on Fist home territory. Likely be blood in the stands before it was over.
The deep rattle Wulf had felt before shook the house again. He muted the game and stood up. "What the hell is that?" He started toward the window, recalled Luc's warning, and stood stock still in the middle of the room.
What if it was one of the hit men, trying to get in?
At that moment, the chandelier above rattled and swayed.
What the hell was going on? He wouldn't hit Senthys, would he?
Wulf pounded up the stairs and listened at the top. It sounded like a game of ruckball was going on up here, with voices raised as something heavy hit the wall on his left. He ran down that hallway, yanking open doors. A thud jarred the next one.
Wulf jerked it open in time to see a boxing glove headed right for his face.

Do you love cheesecake and cherries? So do Luc and Izzorah!
In this scene, Luc and Izzorah are having their first meal alone since meeting a few days before. Luc is older by millenia, and Izzorah is in his early twenties. Luc wants him, but keeps trying to talk himself out of it, afraid of taking advantage.
But this dinner might change his mind...
After dinner, they enjoyed a light wine while they each tore into massive slices of cheesecake topped with a thick sauce of fresh cherries in brandy.
"Oh, stars that was good." Izzorah put down his fork. "If my father hadn't raised me to be polite, I swear I'd lick my plate. That was the best dessert ever. McDoth is an amazing cook."
"That was straight from Batchelor's."
"They make cheesecake?"
"Yes. Yvan's famous for it. That one had all the creaminess I've learned to expect from their kitchen."
"I never thought they'd be famous for food. No wonder everyone wants to go there." Izzorah leaned back in his chair. "I probably ate way too much, but I was hungry."
"Same here. No worry. I'm sure we'll work it off." Luc's plate still held crumbles of crust from the cheesecake, along with a smear of cherries. "You know, since you and I are alone..." On impulse, he lifted the dessert plate and while holding Izzorah's gaze, gave it a long, slow lick.
Izzorah giggled, biting his lip. He picked up his plate as well and gave the plate a quick lick with the tip of his tongue.
Luc stroked his tongue across the plate, taking his time, letting his gaze tell Izzorah how delicious it tasted -- and felt.
Color rose in Izzorah's cheeks. His lashes lowered. He performed a far more thorough lick. He gave Luc a sultry smile and then stroked his tongue along the edge of the plate. The soft wet barbs on his tongue glistened in the light.
Stifling an oath, Luc struggled for composure. The tightness in his throat had nothing to do with the surfeit of sugar.

This happy ever after story focuses on the staff of the Thieves' Guild Academy, and introduces a classroom of tiny precocious thieves.
Kam, Master of the Academy on the planet Kelthia, deals with a school full of fledgling thieves, con artists, and hackers, and doesn't need attitude from students, faculty, or staff.
When he rejects a half-feline half-human prodigy for unmanageable behavior, his ex, Brinn, fosters the girl himself.
Brinn handles the unruly child well, and Kam grudgingly agrees she shows great potential as a future thief. Missing Brinn, Kam seeks to win him back. But when the child comes under suspicion as having hacked Planet Fun, an empire-renowned anti-gravity theme park, Kam must decide whether to trust his well-honed instincts, or his long-divided heart...
In this scene, Brinn and his co-teacher, Hahlibeth, are about to have breakfast with Dresden, the little girl they have taken in as a foster child.
While Brinn sipped his coffee, the house droids served Hahlibeth scrambled eggs with potatoes, bacon, and fresh orange juice. But when approached, Dresden pushed her plate away. "I'd like cheesecake for breakfast, please."
The house droid serving her turned to Brinn.
"Cheesecake is not a good breakfast."
The girl didn't pout or argue. She opened her napkin and placed it on her lap. "May I please have milk?"
"Yes."
"May I have hot tea with sugar?"
For someone who'd always asked can I, she'd switched to the more proper may I quite fast. "Sure. I don't see why not."
"How about graham crackers?"
"I suppose that's all right."
"And may I have cream cheese for my crackers?"
Where was she going with this? Brinn met Hahlibeth's gaze, but she was clearly staying out of it. "All right. That too."
"Are eggs okay?"
"Of course."
"Thank you. Then please tell the droids to bring me tea without sugar, and then mix all those other things into cheesecake and bring me a piece."

In this excerpt from the Package Deal anthology, the single-dad hero of Hacking Planet Fun makes a plea for saving a little girl.
"I object in the strongest terms." Brinn Halin came to his feet. "Abandoning a four-year-old to the imperial foster system is wrong."
"No one's abandoning her." Kam Zavala, Master of the Academy, leaned back in his chair near the end of the oval table. "She'll be returned to the imperial facility where we got her. She's unsuitable. There's no malice in the board's decision. It's simply a good decision for the Academy."
Could the man not hear how cold-blooded those words were? "And how will that good decision affect a little girl?"
Kam, like the seven others seated around the table, had eyes as lifeless as the flat black tabletop.
Brinn straightened. "Yes, the imperial services will house and educate her, but that's it. She'll be a number, not a person. We rescued Dresden Fasra because she's a HalfKin. She may be four, but her vocabulary is akin to a twelve-year-old." With the flick of a hand, Brinn cast a holographic chart into the center of the table. "Her dexterity, speed, and comprehension are off the charts compared to human students."
"We're familiar with HalfKin stats." With a curt wave, Kam dismissed the chart. "Intelligence and ability don't change the fact that she's not a good fit. She needs to go."
"What she needs is training only the Academy can give her."
"Training with whom?" Kam folded his hands on the table. "This child has been through three foster families in the Academy in as many weeks. Each one marked her as ungovernable."
"All that means is they couldn't manage her. She's spirited."
"Spirited?" Kam picked up his notereader. "According to the first family, Dresden Fasra is, and I quote, 'difficult, obstinate, impudent, and impertinent.'" He stroked upward on the reader. "The second found her 'insulting, insolent, and flippant.' The third family simply stated, 'tantrums.'" He tossed the device onto the table. "With those qualities in her record, no Sen'dai in their right minds would foster her. The Guild wants children who can be trained as thieves. This girl is unsuitable. Thieves require patience and discipline. She has neither."
"Of course not. She's four!" Resisting the urge to raise his voice, Brinn braced both hands on the table. This was a board meeting, not a shouting match. "The lack of patience and discipline is why we foster young children. We mold them and teach them those skills. Dresden's parents were killed when she was two, and for half her life she's been housed with the imperial agency. Do any of you have a clue what life in that system is like?"
No one spoke.
"Well, I do."

In this scene, Kam had gone to Brinn's household to inform him of a meeting Brinn had missed, but he was also checking up on the little girl Brinn is fostering. Each man has feelings for the other, but neither will bend enough to be honest about his feelings. I'll let this excerpt speak for itself.
Once the others were out of sight, Kam relaxed.
Brinn glared. "Is this an official inspection?"
"The Academy does require a check-in, and since I wanted to tell you about the board meeting, I said I'd handle it."
"As you can see, we have things under control." Brinn jammed his arms across his chest.
The tension in Brinn's posture had eased when he'd been interacting with Dresden about the pet mowt, but now it returned, full force.
"She seems really sweet." Kam adjusted his collar. "I'm glad for her. And for you."
"Why would you be glad for me?"
"Because you need to get back to work. I think helping this little girl might do it for you."
"Just what do you mean by that?"
Why was he so touchy about everything? And what had Kam said now?
"Look," Brinn headed for the door, and Kam followed. "Thanks for telling me about the meeting. Don't worry. We'll take care of your mowt. Send a text when you're back and we'll bring him to you." Brinn opened the door.
"Thanks." He stuck out his hand, and Brinn shook it. "See you in a couple days."
Kam hadn't even gotten off the front steps before the door slammed. Okay, maybe not a full slam, but more than a quiet close. The kind of close when unwanted company finally left. Halfway between good-riddance and don't-come-back.
Could Brinn not let down his guard for one minute? No matter how many times or how many ways Kam found to be in the man's circle, Brinn remained indifferent.
Shutting Kam out. Kam was probably reading more into Brinn's actions than he needed to.
But, knowing Brinn, maybe not.

Brinn caught the door before it slammed. He might be irritated, but he didn't want Kam picking up on it. Still, it closed pretty hard.
What was he worrying about? Kam was clueless anyway.
Or maybe he wasn't. With that constant stony-faced expression of his, who could tell? Maybe there was more going on beneath the surface.
Why should he even think about the man? It wasn't like they had anything going on. They'd had a few nights together after completing a huge project. That was it. They'd each been too wrapped up in other projects to continue the relationship. Hadn't they?
So why did his heart race every time he and Kam were in the same room? It wasn't like Kam had any interest. The man found every tiny reason to be in Brinn's business. Questioning his motives. Asking him questions. Finding fault with his answers.
Like coming all the way out here to tell him about a meeting. Come on. No, Kam was checking up on him. Of all the nerve.
Okay, maybe Brinn was reading more into it than it was worth.
But, knowing Kam, maybe not.
