The Setting: Felidae

I created this map back in 2004, when I was writing For Her Only. I wanted an easy way to differentiate between the various clans, and also gain insight into where they might travel and obstacles they'd encounter.

Feline features and cultural practices characterize the Kin. The complex and hierarchical matriarchal society concentrates power in female leaders known as Tzesars. The Ruh clan, led by Tzesar Ehldani, holds significant political influence. Males, often marginalized and treated as subordinates, have little freedoms. Males may not enter the public places alone and can face arrest for disobeying this directive. When in public, males must be under immediate control of a female, shown by holding her hand or standing close to her.

Kin culture includes unique treatment of the dead. They do not bury their deceased but perform a ritual offering to birds of prey known as the Mortay Wahn ("dead mouth"), Eaters of the Dead. The practice reflects a deep connection to their environment and belief in the cycle of life and death.

The Kin diet features meat, with warriors consuming it raw or minimally cooked. This contrasts with Khyff, a human character who has to adapt to their dietary preferences, highlighting the differences between species.

Felidae has little advanced technology, with only a few hovercars and a rudimentary public transport system. Ruh City bustles with activity, but no buildings rise above six floors. Horses and carriages fill the streets, leading to the maxim, "Traffic on Felidae stinks."

The interactions between male and female characters reveal underlying tensions regarding gender roles. Males like Khyff often feel out of place and face prejudice.

Political unrest and the struggle for power among clans concern treaties with the Empire. Mehfawni's role as an ambassador suggests Felidae is at a crossroads regarding its autonomy and relationship with external powers. The planet owns a rich and intricate place with its own customs, challenges, and societal norms that significantly affect characters' lives and interactions.
