An exiled immortal king must contend with the most dysfunctional family since forever.

Forged in Fire Excerpt

In this scene from Bringer of Chaos: Forged in Fire, the not-quite-human Six offers water to the immortal king, Pietas.

Six slid their canteen off over his head and held it out to Pietas.
Accepting anything from a human, an altered one at that, had violated every instinct at first. To take from an enemy, yes. Always. Let one give you something as if you needed it? Admit a weakness before an enemy?
Never.
But this was Six.
Pietas took it.
Ultras could go days without water, but they consumed it when they had it. He wiped one dusty hand across his mouth. The satisfaction of assuaged thirst never failed to please. What simple things in life brought pleasure! In captivity, he'd dreamed of even a drop to cool his tongue. He'd sworn he'd never take water for granted again.
Six had offered it to their companions during the climb, but the entire lot refused anything a mortal's lips had touched. Yes, Six was a quasi-immortal. A dead human soldier who'd been resurrected and enhanced with Ultra blood. A "ghost." But to the others, that gave him even less status.
Pietas wavered on few things, but on this? Should he call the man human, mortal, quasi-immortal, or ghost? He'd elected to choose as the mood struck. But one in particular annoyed Six.
"Thanks, ghost." He thrust the canteen against Six's chest.
Staggering, he swore in Spanish. "Find another name for me."
"Tell me your mortal name then."
"You know I can't." Six scratched his cheek. "Gotta protect my family. If your kind knew who they were, they'd slaughter them. You wouldn't, but them?"
Now they were getting somewhere. "So you do trust me?"
"Pi, there's more honor in your left big toe than your entire race combined." He tipped up the canteen but then paused. "No offense."
"None taken. But we're stranded, my friend. Unless a miracle happens, by the time we get off this world, your family will be long dead." He added, "No offense."
Six finished his drink and plugged the canteen. "None taken. Sorry. Can't do it." He lifted the strap back over his head and settled it onto his shoulder, the canteen at his back. "Seriously, Pi, your people hear you call me you-know-what, it'll give away I was Ghost Corps. We both know what they'll do to me."

On the day of impending peace talks with humans, Pietas, leader of the immortal Ultras, must bow to the will of the mighty Council or face impeachment. As suspected, the talks devolve into an inescapable trap. Faced with the destruction of his people, Pietas surrenders. Once imprisoned, he finds an unlikely ally in a human. Pietas will either doom his people to exile and face the end of his own immortality, or place his faith in that which he most hates. A human...

Origin of Pietas Excerpt

In this scene, Pietas experiences an unfamiliar situation -- a friend who has his back. It begins with Pietas speaking.

"My father would get so angry with me, Six. He'd say it under his breath, but I heard. He'd call me useless. I say that about myself."

"How can you think of yourself as useless? You're the most powerful Ultra ever created. Everybody knows that."

With a twitch of his fingers, Pietas dismissed the praise. "It is not how I feel. If I were telepathic, I could have found my people by now. If I were telepathic, I wouldn't have gotten us marooned on an alien world. No, my father was right. When it comes to telepathy, I am useless."

"Wow." Six tossed part of a small branch onto the fire, sending sparks spiraling upward. "Biggest pity party I've ever been to."

Pietas leaned on one hand to face Six. "What is a pity party?"

"When you feel sorry for yourself and expect others to do the same thing 'Poor me. Look how I'm suffering.' That's a pity party."

"Excuse me for sharing how I felt."

"You were doing fine, until you said you were useless. I don't care who told you that. It's a pure out-and-out lie and you know it. To let anybody else's opinion of you keep you from being your best..." Six threw down the stick. "Look, Ultra. That's not you, okay? Listen to me. I sat with you while you were nothing but two big blue eyes, and blackened skin stretched over bones. You couldn't lift your head, you were so weak. You tried not to show how much pain you were in, but I could see it. I could hear it in the way you panted, trying to breathe. The way you hobbled about as if all your bones were broken. But you fought like a caged animal to get your strength back. I will never accept any lie about you being useless. You're one of-- No, you are the strongest person I've ever known."

The pride at those words from so dear a friend--a human friend--brought tears to his eyes. Pietas turned his head, and blinked them away.

Trailing Kaiwulf

Ordered back from their first vacation in ages, Jee and Dane get handed a top priority mission. The pay is better than any they've earned before as agents for the Trace, Rescue, and Identification League.

With this much money, they might not need jobs. They're the best there is, and the item, person, or secret hasn't been invented that these two can't recover. But locating this quarry might be a bit past even their considerable skills. After all, how do you find an invisible man in another dimension?

And who, exactly, is footing a bill this steep? Certainly not the archaeologist in charge.

The military wants to get involved, but they have no monetary stake either. So who -- or what -- is behind the request to trail Kaiwulf?

TRAIL stands for Trace, Rescue, and Identification League. Their detractors say it stands for Thieves, Ruffians, A--holes, Idiots, and Liars, among other things. A TRAIL agent learns early whether to pucker up or duck.

The agency operates within the Terran Crescent, and the Colonies of Man, but has been known to venture into outlying areas. In Trailing Kaiwulf, they visit the planet Ust, a forgotten backwater planet close to the remnants of the Barrier, a crumbling network of nav-scramblers set adrift in space.

Originally designed to keep humans on this side of the galaxy, and the non-human genetically altered (or gens) on the other. TRAIL stories will be set in various locations.

He was skittish as a horse with a new saddle #Excerpt Ring of the Dragon #PNR #Dragons #SciFi

This scene from Ring of the Dragon features Pietas and Dark Hair, the Kin female who is helping him hunt for a specific horse (hynder). They have traipsed across a huge portion of the world, and have finally found a human who knows where the horse is. In addition, the human has invited them to hitch a ride on his transport and promised to give them a lift as far north as the Ruh River the next morning. Pietas has a moment alone with Dark Hair, who understands his claustrophobia and the reason for it. All in all, things are starting to look up. For Pietas, that usually means they are about to fall apart.

Dark Hair patted Pietas on the shoulder. "You come. I scrub back."

The head had white walls but no windows. Not dark, but so closed Pietas could not force himself to enter. The shower stall also housed the toilet and sink. The floor sloped toward a central drain. A vertical life-pod. Worse than prison. In prison, you could pace.

Dark Hair edged around him and turned on the water. "Look. Big towel. You like this, I know. Soft." She stuck one hand under the water. "See? Is hot water. You come." She beckoned. "I help you. Stay with you."

Pietas took a step back.

"I stay here." She held out her hands. "You come. Feel better, you get clean."

With his gaze locked on hers, taking one halting step after the other, Pietas crossed to her.

Dark Hair took his hands and smiled up at him. "You like hynder get new saddle. Is okay. Saddle not bad. I promise." She stood on tiptoe and kissed him.

With her aid, he stripped and she placed their clothes outside the door for Mase to collect.

Pietas stepped under the steaming water. Closing his eyes, he let the water pour over his head and down onto his shoulders. The tension of the day eased. With his eyes closed, he could picture himself aboard his ship, in his bathing chamber. Safe. Not locked in. Free.

He let out a long sigh. "I needed this. Thanks."

"Will like clean clothes."

"Mmm."

"He very nice."

"Maybe."

Dark Hair moved Pietas's hair over one shoulder. She ran both hands across his back, making circles as she bathed him. "You not like Mase?"

"I don't know him. I've been lied to, fired upon, stolen from, and otherwise abused too many times to trust without proof."

"Face me."

"Hmm?" He turned to find Dark Hair standing on a stool. He had to tilt back his head to meet her gaze. "Why?"

"Close eyes. I wash face."

When he had, she washed from his brow to his chin. "You rinse."

He stuck his face under the water, wiped it with one hand. "Thank you."

"Turn around again, I wash hair." She poured shampoo into one hand.

Pietas turned his back, and angled the spray away from his face. "If you're trying to make up for robbing me, it's working."

She gave a low purr. "Good." Her claws on his scalp sent shivers down his arms.

After the shampoo, she soaped his chest, and when he'd rinsed, curled her fingers into his hair. With her standing above him, he had to tip back his head to accept her kiss. How he'd love to lift her into his arms, press her against the wall and have her heat surround him.

Dark Hair pulled back. "Have idea."

She directed him to sit atop the closed toilet seat, and faced him. "You hold here." She placed his hands on her waist. With the water cascading over them, she lowered herself onto his lap.

Pietas gasped.

She halted. "This cause pain?"

"Pain?" He pressed his brow against hers. "What pain?" He pulled her down to him and parted his lips for her kiss.
