#Excerpt A Divided Heart - You could cut the tension with a knife #SciFi #MMRomance

In this scene from A Divided Heart, Brinn and his co-teacher, Hahlibeth, have just gotten their foster child into bed.

Excerpt A Divided Heart

On the stairs, Brinn turned and sat, elbows braced on his knees, thinking back over the day. How bizarre was it to have a student of his own in this house, where he had so many memories? Graduation parties for reaching the various levels in the Guild. Long nights spent studying. Being quizzed by Luc, asking him questions, getting his advice. Learning the laws that pertained to the types of theft Brinn planned to pursue. Understanding contracts for theft and how to protect himself against dubious clauses and demands.

He was still sitting there when Hahlibeth came down.

She sat beside him. "I got two pages into a story, and she was out. I thought she might be faking it at first. My brother and I used to do that sometimes. We'd talk in the dark. I finished reading and sat there, waiting, but she didn't move."

"You think she's happy?"

"I don't think she knows what to think."

"Probably right."

Hahlibeth gripped one of his hands and leaned toward him. "She's young. She's in a new place. Her life has been disrupted. We can't expect anything like normal. She doesn't even know what normal is right now. At least, not what's normal for an Academy student."

Brinn set one arm around Hahlibeth's shoulders and hugged her. "I'm so glad to be doing this with you."

"Me too." She leaned against him and then away. "So, what's with the sexual tension between you and Kam?"

He twisted to face her, putting his back against the railing. "Um... What?"

"Oh, don't pretend. It was so thick you could cut it with a knife."

"Hahlibeth, I promise you. There is nothing going on between Kam and me. If you're sensing anything, it's frustration and annoyance."

She chuckled. "Uh huh."

The Ugly Christmas Sweater... Shirt.

In this scene, the hero, Scott, finds the dreaded ugly Christmas sweater, his in shirt form, a gift from his mother.

The Christmas Sweater / Shirt

In his old room, Scott stripped out of his uniform and put on sweatpants and slippers. On his bed was the loose T-shirt with a blond-haired elf on the front that his mother had given him the year before. The elf was shirtless, wearing red boxer shorts with holly on them, and he was licking a candy cane while dangling a round ornament on one finger of his other hand. Some people got an ugly Christmas sweater. His mom gave him the T-shirt version he could wear all year. Yay. Lucky him.

Upon seeing the shirt when Scott unwrapped it, a cousin had started singing, "Don we now our gay apparel..." and had broken into riotous laughter. That didn't stop the family from insisting he wear it. He was sure he'd asked Mary to give it to Goodwill, so how it had shown up again this year he couldn't explain. Yet, there it was. It could only have come from one person.

"The things we do for our mothers." Scott slipped it on over his head and headed for the kitchen.

He leaned against the door jamb, enjoying the sight. His mother was chopping things for the stuffing and adding them to her biggest bowl. His dad sat at the end of the counter, reading a Popular Science magazine. Neither seemed to pay attention to the other, but while his mother was cooking, Dad always kept her company. She'd crochet in a wooden rocker in the garage while he worked on the boat he was building. As if they couldn't bear to be parted from one another, even though they didn't talk much. Maybe they didn't need words.

Scott had thought he and his wife would be the same, but he and Mary had shared a different lifestyle. Both were often busy, and sometimes saw each other only in passing. He'd worked nights, and she'd worked days. She'd had a downtown office, working as an architect for government housing. Time spent outdoors had given her a great tan, but exposed her to hazardous toxins no one had known were in the old buildings being demolished. When she fainted at work, the company sent her in for a check up. After the diagnosis, the project had been shut down immediately, but cancer took a quick toll. Mary was gone in six months. A government investigation into the cause was still ongoing.

Scott now had sole custody of a four-year old daughter and a job that took him into danger every day. He'd shifted to the downtown beat and day shift because it seemed safer, and he could still do what he loved doing: Helping people.

Artwork: Son, where is your tie? #SciFiArt #SciFi #MFRWhooks

The banner above was one of the first homepage images on my site. I love it! It was created for me by Laura Givens. She was the cover artist for many of my books, pre-indie. In this image, she put all the guys in tuxedos and grouped them as if they were at a party.

Everyone is either looking at Senth (on the right), or glancing at Luc on the left. Luc is giving Senth a serious look because Senth has lost his tie. In case you’re not familiar with the stories, Luc is Senth’s adoptive father, having reared him from age three.

The Kin who is just to the right of Luc is Jawk Brighton. He had a fling with Luc while Luc was still in a relationship with Wulf Gabriel (center, with a bow tie).

I really love how Laura captured Wulf's smile and personality -- he is a supermodel and always looks amazing. In one book, Luc muses that Wulf's smile is in half the dentist offices in the Empire.

In the background to the right of Jawk is Alitus Vivaldi. Alitus is the Minister of Imperial Intelligence for the Imperial Armada, and up until the book Jawk, Tales of the Chosen, had been in an exclusive relationship with Empress Rheyn Destoiya.

When Luc and Wulf had a falling out, Alitus comforted Wulf, who was also a Chosen. They became partners in spying for the empress, and much closer than friends, much to Luc’s dismay.

Between Wulf and Senth is the blond-haired and blue-eyed Khyff Antonello, Senth’s half brother. He is checking out Luc's reaction.

With the exception of Jawk, these guys are in almost every book I've written set in the Tarthian Empire.

I thought it would be fun to see this art, especially as it reveals so much about their personalities.

Box? What box? Excerpt from Jawk #MMRomance #SciFi

Excerpt from the Complete Set of Tales of the Chosen Series

When you live forever, mortals who learn the truth can prove deadly.

Read this three book series of erotic gay sci-fi romance and pick up a bonus book as well.

In this scene, Jawk and Luc have come aboard Luc's new ship, the Crossfire.

The ship itself hadn't been visible from the ramp area, so Jawk had no clue to its size. Once aboard, Luc stopped in front of a panel showing the vessel's layout.

"Here, Jawk." Luc picked up a small lapel pin. "Put this on whenever you're outside your cabin. It'll help you figure out where you are."

He dropped the backpack and attached the tiny pin to his jacket the way Luc did. Two small blinking lights appeared near the bottom of the ship outline. A bubble appeared above each.

Luc touched one. "That's us."

Jawk leaned down to get a better look. "That means this thing's huge."

"Crossfire is a sleepliner-sized vessel. Once it's through trials and gets commissioned, it'll transport seven thousand passengers."

"Seven thou--" Jawk flicked back one ear. "Listen, I only have three years of NETway engineering classes behind me, but I know what kind of power it takes to launch something this big. How does it get off the ground without tearing itself up? Shouldn't you keep it on the lunar station where there's less gravity?"

"Jawk, this ship is all about convenience. Not having to take a shuttle to get to the lunar starport. Not having to use fuel to lift off. This ship produces no pollution, and doesn't damage the ecosphere."

"No fuel?" Jawk blinked, ears straight up. "But physics laws are immutable. There has to..."

Luc held up a hand. "I've spent five years creating this ship. I risked more capital than you can imagine to put it together, and I don't risk anything lightly. For want of a better word, the 'fuel' this ship uses is reproducible and eco-friendly."

Jawk chewed the tip of a claw.

"You don't believe me, do you?"

"Haven't seen anything yet to convince me it works, whatever it is." With one foot, he nudged the backpack. "I'll say one thing. You sure think outside the box."

The man gave him a smug look. "What box?"

This will get much worse #Excerpt #SciFi #MFRWhooks

In this scene from Alitus - Tales of the Chosen, the hero gets news he feared would come.

Betters are enhanced humans whose pheromones can addict and whose voices put a human in thrall.

Now regulated by the imperial government, they must wear an electronic veil that alters their voices and removes their pheromones. Protests have broken out around the Empire. As the Minister of Imperial Intelligence, Alitus must be kept apprised of the situation.

Excerpt

"Alitus." Byrin beckoned to him. "Her Majesty sent word. She needs you immediately."

He joined Byrin, who walked with him toward the elevator. "What's wrong?"

Byrin used the call button. "Three Betters protested outside Parliament by burning their veils. When police moved in, things got out of hand. Seven of them were killed."

Alitus stepped into the elevator, holding the doors open. "I thought you said there were three Betters."

"The Betters were working together to prevent the police from moving them. When their pheromones combined, it killed seven of the cops."

The impact of that event would have far-reaching consequences. "One Better alone can kill. We've seen that. Ganged up? Byrin, this is going to get much worse." He stepped back from the door.

"There's a full-fledged riot going on down there." Byrin put out his hand to stop the doors from closing. "Hey."

Alitus met the man's grim gaze.

"Watch your back."
