Only a rank newbie depended on military tech #SciFi #PietasFans #MFRWhooks

If you're fighting immortals who always get back up, you'd better have a way to do the same thing. Otherwise, it's lights out...

When you're a soldier genetically enhanced to the point of near immortality and you fight a mortal soldier resurrected with the pilfered blood of your people, friendship never enters the equation.

But what if the enemy you've despised your entire life holds the sole key to your salvation?

(Books 1-2 + bonus Lights Out) https://books2read.com/boc-bundle1

In this scene from Lights Out, Tornahdo has arrived at Enderium Six, site of the upcoming peace talks. He's there to insure security, and he's starting to figure out things aren't going to go as well as he'd planned.

Excerpt

From the ship's bridge, the space station Enderium Six filled every viewscreen. It occupied busy space-lanes outside the Terran Crescent. A steady stream of ships debarked, heading in different directions. Tornahdo's experience with peace talks was limited but something was...off.

Not a good sign for ending a war.

He reined in that thought. Nothing negative. Nothing sarcastic.

He must not allow emotion to claim victory after learning to suppress it. Didn't matter if his anti-emo chip was malfunctioning or not. When the chip worked, it controlled every aspect of his emotions. When it didn't, he controlled them. He'd done that all his life.

Besides, who but a rank newbie counted on military tech to save his butt?

The general would not be pleased with his current struggle after he'd fought to win her approval. He'd asked himself why he desired her admiration but pondering that question always gave him a headache. He just needed it.

Maybe because his new training permitted a single emotion in his heart. Hatred.

Hardest thing he did. Hating. Wasn't his nature. But ghosts followed orders.

He should not give credence to the niggling doubt that something, somewhere was missing. But grasping the meaning behind the worry? Futile.

He must not worry. He must permit no emotion other than hate.

Ultras controlled the emotions of others. The anti-emo chip blocked them. The chip kept him safe in battle, faithful as a good soldier.

He must not think of self. Only duty. And with duty came danger.

Only days before, the Ultra's High Council had elected Pietas ap Lorectic as Chancellor. They chose a bloodthirsty, narcissistic megalomaniac with delusions of godhood and a fabled hatred of humans, and then sent him to chair peace talks.

Typical.

Maybe that was why the corps shipped Tornahdo and his fellow ghosts to Enderium Six. To make sure the Ultras kept their word.

"You look puzzled, Master Sergeant." A worker tapped colored indicator lights.

Had Tornahdo let his emotions slip or had the chip malfunctioned again? He brushed at lint on his uniform, stalling while he thought of a good excuse. "Odd so many ships are leaving. I thought I'd see arrivals."

"If anyone was arriving you would."

"We're the sole inbound ship?"

"That's right. We're touching down to land your party, load as many civilians as possible, and then we're gone too."

His throat tightened. "They're evacuating the station."

"Yes."

Some peace talks.

When the Ultras found out they'd been lied to these so-called talks would renew the war. So far, his luck with duty stations was holding steady at zero.

Bringer of Chaos series #PietasFans #SciFi

What if the enemy you despise holds the key to your salvation?

If you're fighting immortals who always get back up, you'd better have a way to do the same thing. Otherwise, it's lights out...

When you're a soldier genetically enhanced to the point of near immortality and you fight a mortal soldier resurrected with the pilfered blood of your people, friendship never enters the equation.

Here's what readers say:

* I shouldn't like Pietas. He's arrogant and pretends he's uncaring, but he's one of the most fascinating characters I've read recently.

* I loved this story! A scifi bromance like nothing else I’ve ever read.

* Pietas – the Ultra of awesome powers, both mental and physical – is left helpless and doomed by humans and a betrayer from his own kind. Six – a once-human ghost who should be the sworn enemy of any Ultra – saves Pietas from a destiny worse than physical death. The two are then marooned together on a distant, most likely deserted planet.

* The Ultra has vowed never to accept help from anyone even close to human. That vow is challenged by his need to survive. The ghost has pledged to destroy all Ultras on sight. Watching Pietas and Six grapple through this deep dilemma was nothing short of beautiful for me. If these adversaries can navigate the chasm of hatred, distrust and male ego between them, maybe there’s hope for our own fractured world.

* Immersed into a setting where every character is dealing with decisions, and where the wrong one is like having a jar of nitroglycerine and dropping it at his or her own feet. Characters to root for, and a story that satisfies all of the criteria of what makes up an excellent novel.

Meet a single dad who finds love in an unexpected place #Excerpt from Package Deal an anthology by BBB Publishings #BBBpublishings #Anthology

In this excerpt from the Package Deal anthology, the single-dad hero of Hacking Planet Fun makes a plea for saving a little girl.

"I object in the strongest terms." Brinn Halin came to his feet. "Abandoning a four-year-old to the imperial foster system is wrong."

"No one's abandoning her." Kam Zavala, Master of the Academy, leaned back in his chair near the end of the oval table. "She'll be returned to the imperial facility where we got her. She's unsuitable. There's no malice in the board's decision. It's simply a good decision for the Academy."

Could the man not hear how cold-blooded those words were? "And how will that good decision affect a little girl?"

Kam, like the seven others seated around the table, had eyes as lifeless as the flat black tabletop.

Brinn straightened. "Yes, the imperial services will house and educate her, but that's it. She'll be a number, not a person. We rescued Dresden Fasra because she's a HalfKin. She may be four, but her vocabulary is akin to a twelve-year-old." With the flick of a hand, Brinn cast a holographic chart into the center of the table. "Her dexterity, speed, and comprehension are off the charts compared to human students."

"We're familiar with HalfKin stats." With a curt wave, Kam dismissed the chart. "Intelligence and ability don't change the fact that she's not a good fit. She needs to go."

"What she needs is training only the Academy can give her."

"Training with whom?" Kam folded his hands on the table. "This child has been through three foster families in the Academy in as many weeks. Each one marked her as ungovernable."

"All that means is they couldn't manage her. She's spirited."

"Spirited?" Kam picked up his notereader. "According to the first family, Dresden Fasra is, and I quote, 'difficult, obstinate, impudent, and impertinent.'" He stroked upward on the reader. "The second found her 'insulting, insolent, and flippant.' The third family simply stated, 'tantrums.'" He tossed the device onto the table. "With those qualities in her record, no Sen'dai in their right minds would foster her. The Guild wants children who can be trained as thieves. This girl is unsuitable. Thieves require patience and discipline. She has neither."

"Of course not. She's four!" Resisting the urge to raise his voice, Brinn braced both hands on the table. This was a board meeting, not a shouting match. "The lack of patience and discipline is why we foster young children. We mold them and teach them those skills. Dresden's parents were killed when she was two, and for half her life she's been housed with the imperial agency. Do any of you have a clue what life in that system is like?"

No one spoke.

"Well, I do."

My story in Package Deal, a BBB Publishings anthology, is Hacking Planet Fun.

Kam, Master of the Thieves' Guild Academy on the planet Kelthia, deals with a school full of fledgling thieves, con artists, and hackers, and doesn't need attitude from students or faculty. When he rejects a half-feline half-human prodigy for unmanageable behavior, his ex, Brinn, fosters the girl himself.

Brinn handles the unruly child well, and Kam grudgingly agrees she shows great potential as a future thief. Missing Brinn, Kam seeks to win him back. But when the child comes under suspicion as having hacked Planet Fun, an empire-renowned anti-gravity theme park, Kam must decide whether to trust his well-honed instincts... or his long-divided heart.

A twist on academy stories, the male-male science fiction romance Hacking Planet Fun focuses on the staff, and introduces a classroom of tiny precocious thieves who will steal your heart.

---

In this scene, Brinn has picked up Dresden, his four-year-old foster daughter, and is bringing her home for the first time. With him is Hahlibeth, his co-teacher, a fellow master thief he has known since Hahlibeth was three. Theirs is a brother/sister relationship. Dresden has been impossible for others to handle, but Brinn insists he can set the little one on the right path. Here, we see the beginning of her relationship with Brinn.

Brinn got out and opened the rear door for Dresden. "Would you like help carrying your bag?"

"I can manage. I'm strong." The girl hoisted the tote bag onto her shoulder. The sack was nearly half her length, but she held onto it all the way to the door.

The garage led into a short mud room and then the kitchen. The tantalizing smell of garlic and onions wafted to him.

"Welcome home, sir." One of the house droids greeted him. "Welcome home, Ms. Hahlibeth, and Miss Dresden."

"You know my name?" The girl blinked up at him.

"I do. All the house droids will recognize you. Sir." The droid turned to Brinn. "Dinner will be ready in thirty minutes. Would you care for a drink before dining?"

Before Brinn could respond, Dresden stepped forward. "I'd like milk, please."

"I will prepare it at once. May I take your bag?"

"Oh, thank you." The girl pulled it off her shoulder and dropped it to the floor. "That thing is heavy."

"Not to worry, Miss Dresden. I'll see it's delivered to your room at once."

"Thank you."

The droid walked away with the small satchel.

Hahlibeth looked everywhere but at Brinn.

"You know," Brinn said, stooping beside Dresden, "I did offer to help you with your bag."

"He's a droid. He's supposed to help people. I don't owe him anything. If you helped me, then I'd owe you. I don't want to owe anybody anything."

"I see." He moved to one knee. "Why is that?"

"Because if you owe people, they can control you." She narrowed her eyes, and a predatory gleam came over her face. "And nobody controls me."

Choose Me

In the secret society of the Chosen, a group of mortals who serve the immortal Sempervians, being gay or straight is no different from being brown-eyed or blue-eyed. No one notices or cares. But disloyalty among the Chosen is punishable by death, and in this trilogy, everyone’s loyalty is questioned.

Covert alignments, mistrust, mistakes, and regrets pepper the playing field. Both the Chosen and the Sempervians harbor enemies and spies within their ranks — some known and tolerated, others concealed behind layers so convoluted eternity isn’t long enough to figure them out. When you factor in multiple allegiances and aliases, knowing who to trust takes on a whole new level of danger — especially if you live forever.

When the fate of hearts rivals the fate of worlds, victory costs everything.

Includes Bonus Book: An Immortal’s Guide to Tarth; A Handbook for Immortals Relocating to the Tarthian Empire

A bit of fiction, written in a non-fiction way, An Immortal’s Guide to Tarth offers guidance from Joss Avaton, one of the immortals. She provides dire warnings about which immortal not to cross, and what to do about pesky Mundanes (namely, those annoying humans), and who among the Chosen is not to be trusted.

Excerpt from An Immortal’s Guide to Tarth

This excerpt is taken from the opening of the book.

Greetings, Fellow Immortals

Welcome to the Tarthian Empire. This book is a guide to the people, places, and possibilities you’ll find here. A list of immortals and their roles in Peril is also included. All Sempervians are welcome here. This will be your home away from home. To those immortals who have joined us in our glorious exile — please know you are our honored guests. We are pleased to share the bounty of the Empire with you.

I’m Joss Avaton, your guide. A little about me. I’m telepathic (which most of us experience and understand), and a scripter, which means by touching you I can discern your abilities and gifts. Contrary to popular belief, scripters cannot tell your past or your future. We can only tell about your present: what gifts you possess now.

An Immortal's Guide to Tarth

An Immortal’s Guide to Tarth

So that neither of us has any illusions, I will tell you up front that I am serving Penance. For those of you new to the game of Peril, that means I lost a game and must pay for it. In my case, it was a technicality, and the gamers in my session had nothing to do with my loss. I lost by my own mistakes, and take full responsibility. The gamer opposite me (Nanchonta) I would trust with my life, and have, many times. However, I would carefully watch the lead player in my support team (Akaghe) and never turn my back on him. Not for one moment. He is not based in the Tarthian Empire, for which I’m thankful. But enough about the past. I’m here to help you in your future with us.

While we are more than glad to welcome a fellow immortal into the Empire, you should be aware that the relationship between Mundanes (mortals) and ourselves is not an open one. To that end, let’s dive straight into the ironclad rules.

Rule Number One: This Book is for Immortals Only

By order of Pietas ap Lorectic, Lord of the Immortals, the Impaler, Hammer of God, Marauder, Soul Ripper, Destroyer of Worlds, Slayer of Innocents, Hound of Hell, you are ordered to set aside this book if you not immortal. Put down this book, walk away, and no one will get hurt. Should you decide to disobey this directive, that assurance is void.

With that warning in mind, you may proceed at your own risk.

Rule Number Two: Immortals Don’t Exist

Of course, immortals do exist. The fact that you are reading this book proves that. We are referring to what the non-immortal Mundane population thinks. They (other than the Chosen) are never to know of our existence. The rule regarding how much to reveal is simple: nothing.

We do not discuss immortality.
We avoid any mention of immortality.
If asked directly if we are immortal, we lie.
There are no exceptions to this rule.

The answer to “Why can’t we tell them?” is also simple: BPSS (Because Pietas said so). If you don’t know who Pietas is, we refer you to Rule Number One.

You will no doubt find yourself exasperated by the sheer number of Mundanes present in the Tarthian Empire, especially humans. They have overrun it and multiplied like rats in a pestilence. Which brings us to Rule Number Three.

Rule Number Three: Live and Let Live

By order of Pietas, humans and other people groups may not be killed for sport. That does not mean you can’t annoy, manipulate, and use them for your own purposes. However, the rule about killing is strictly enforced. You can be banned from the Empire for killing even one Mundane. Justifiable homicide must be proven in Mundane courts as well as before the throne of Pietas.

It has nothing to do with their inherent worthiness. Mundanes have none. However, we must coexist here and the worlds in the Tarthian Empire are filled with these creatures. They farm, raise fish, cattle, sheep, and other animals used for food, create cities, technology, transport, and other items which we find useful and helpful. Since we take full advantage of these things, it behooves us to let them exist. Therefore, the golden rule is “Live and let live.”

We cannot stress strongly enough the need to remember the golden rule when it comes to Mundanes, and especially humans. They tend to bring out the worst in us, so guard yourself against rash behavior in their presence. Pietas does not permit a “temporary insanity” defense. I know this chafes. You must learn to deal with it.

Well, fellow mortals. Will you choose to obey the directive and avoid the book? Or will you crack that baby open and grab all the secrets you can find? Choose…

Both books are available as preorders until Sep 17th. The cost for each is just 99 cents. They will go up after Oct 1st, so grab them now. If you buy the boxed set, you get An Immortal’s Guide to Tarth free. If you already have the Chosen series, just grab the single book.

The truth risked not only his quarry's life, but also his own #Excerpt Alitus #MMRomance #SciFi #MFRWhooks

In this scene from Alitus, Tales of the Chosen, the spymaster Alitus investigates the lover of one of the most powerful men in the empire.

Failure is not an option.

Spymaster Alitus Vivaldi paused beside his new assistant's desk and tapped a finger on it.

The man jumped to his feet. "Yes, sir?"

"I didn't mean to startle you, Jarod." The man had been with Alitus less than a week, but he'd already proven himself invaluable. "I'll be working on a Class Four project the rest of the day. Keep interruptions to a minimum."

"Yes, sir. I'll ensure you're not disturbed, Minister Vivaldi."

Inside his private office, Alitus set the standard safeguards, and added a few layers of additional protection. The glowing logo for the Conqueror's Division of Imperial Intelligence faded as Alitus pulled up a bank of images from the idBot interface. He flicked his fingers to cast images onto the walls around the room.

"Begin capture. Target: Wulf Gabriel. Parameters: record my questions as well as any and all information available in database for target." Pointing toward the top right of one wall, Alitus moved his finger diagonally to the bottom left to bring up another bank of pictures. "Play series." His current quarry was walking toward the Renyoj Building in the Di Consueto District. "Stop playback."

The truth risked not only his quarry's life, but also his own #Excerpt Alitus #MMRomance #SciFi #MFRWhooksAlitus tapped a finger on one picture to create a still, and zoomed in for a better view. Mid-stride, Wulf had reached the entrance. He wore a charcoal gray suit, dark hair tousled from the breeze. A former supermodel, Wulf's chiseled features and strong jaw set him apart in any crowd.

How could anyone fail to recognize him? Wulf was beautiful. All he had to do is walk into the room and everything stopped.

The lover of wealthy tycoon Luc Saint-Cyr, few things Wulf did were off the public record. The man still had fans from his modeling career five years ago, but these days, fans followed him because he managed famous rock bands for Lucsondis Entertainment, Saint-Cyr's business.

That wasn't what had warranted the attention of the spymaster. Wulf was no traitor to the crown, and he'd committed no crimes.

Wulf was suspected of having an affair.

Luc Saint-Cyr wanted to be sure, and since he was a friend of the Conqueror, she had tasked Alitus with finding out who was to blame. Saint-Cyr might have no qualms about engaging in an affair himself, and was well-known for his licentious behavior, but his partner had no such freedom. Saint-Cyr and the Conqueror were allies in every sense of the word. Were even lovers when it suited them.

Alitus would refuse no request she made. Nor could he refuse Saint-Cyr. One drew the Harbinger's ire at one's peril.

The man owned a large percentage of legitimate businesses on Tarth, Kelthia, and a smattering on other planets. He had once headed the Kelthian Thieves' Guild. No one had yet proven he led the largest crime syndicate in the empire, but the assumption was there, despite official denials. There was no public discussion of Saint-Cyr anywhere except entertainment news, where it seemed to be encouraged. On Kelthia, they said his name only if they couldn't avoid it. Otherwise he was the Harbinger, or the Man, or simply Him.

One could hear the capital letters.

Proving Wulf was having an affair would be dangerous. It could cost Wulf everything, up to and including his life.

Especially if they discovered the affair was with Alitus.
