The Chanoyu represents the Chosen, and stands for both time and eternity. It is filled with symbolism.
The figure "8" = Eternity
Hourglass = Time
Blue tinted glass = freedom (originally freedom of the skies)
White sand = purity
Hand-blown glass = Individuality of each Chosen; the uniqueness of each one
Wood = the Chosen - wood is ever changing and growing, yet it can die; it can be carved to fit any purpose
Gold = the Sempervians are everlasting and unchanging in nature yet can be reformed into another item. Gold connects the various items of wood and pierces the hourglass through the legs and glass.
Spikes of gold = Interruption of life by duty; also symbolizes the joining of the Chosen, Sempervians, time, and eternity.
Chanoyu of the Chosen Ritual
This binds a Sempervian and his/her Chosen forever. The pact is made between them not only for the Chosen but also for all the Chosen's descendants and family. It is not a pact made lightly; the Sempervian is likely to find him/herself responsible for an ever-increasing number of progeny throughout generations to follow. Despite strict requirements that the Chosen limit their offspring to no more than one, the birth of multiples has and will continue to have serious consequences on the future.
Pietas ap Lorectic, the leader of the Sempervians has pledged that no Chosen will ever be harmed by him. In all the galaxy, they are the only people safe from his wrath, yet even they tremble at his name.
When a Chosen dies, all Chosen and Sempervians mourn.
