In the Tarthian Empire, slaves are required to learn Jobspeak 100, the 100 most common words in the tradestandard language of Etymis. Even slaves are paid, and Jobspeak 100 enables them to gain a non-tradestandard or "non-speaking wage." This is the lowest pay scale.

To earn a tradestandard (or "speaking") wage, slaves and free workers must be able to use Jobspeak 300, the 300 most common words.

Tests are given for fluency. As workers learn more words, they can earn more income. Fluency in the tradestandard Etymis earns the highest wages (based on classification of job).

Most of the empire's native alphabets are so similar to Etymis they can be read easily. The exception is Felis, language of the Kin people. You can see a side by side comparison of the Etymis and Felis alphabets here.
